Publisher's Description

RegCleaner is an easy to use program that can easily get rid of those old and obsolate registry entries created by software that you have destroyed ages ago. You don´t have to be any expert to use this program. Note that this program is not like those other so called registry cleaners, they search any filenames from registry, then if the file doesn´t exists anymore they remove the registry key or value where this filename was. But RegCleaner shows you the list of software that are registered in the registry and by checking checkboxes you select which software you don´t have anymore and RegCleaner removes all registry created by those programs automatically. You can also remove start up programs that are started behind your back and can dramatically decrease your computer´s performance.

This program is SEVERELY outdated and can cause problems since it has not been updated since 2001 and has known bugs. Some of which were corrected when the author integrated this into his JV16 powertools program which since 2003 has been a PAY to play program. He claims he rewrote the registry cleaner when he did this.

http://fileforum.betanew...rTools_2007/987567453/1

The new updated Registry Cleaner can now be found as a standalone PAY to play program call RegSupreme:

http://fileforum.betanew...RegSupreme/1063650971/1

JV16 Power Tools was initially free and the author received free beta testing in his forums from enthusiast end users, until one day for no reason he simply killed the forums and left every single person there in the dark. He then released these all as pay programs under the company Macecraft:

I have no respect for the author for the way he did this. Nor for the way he treats the end users who used and helped him test his software.

Registry Cleaners do NOT improve performance this is a Myth!

Not the worst program, but it has a couple major bugs. At times, when you execute the program, the program doesn't come to the foreground, but is running in the background. Execute it again, and another entry for it is created, running in the background. It finally comes to the foreground after closing the previous two entries and executing it directly (non-shortcut). I also don't like the installation/uninstallation process. You are forced to run the uninstall from the program folder. Finally, when restoring entries from the backup, you are not allowed to stop the process. You must wait for it to finish. This is not good because the "Remove Selected" and the "Restore Selected" buttons are right next to each other. This program is prone to mistakes.

I earlier slated this program but feel obliged to now update my previous comments. Since last writing, the author has updated it several times and I would now recommend it. Stabilty seems to have been rectified and the interface and backup options make it safe and simple to use.
Judging by the number of updates that are released, I think the author deserves ten *s, for effort alone.

I imagine people want to use this program to free up ram, so I recommend RAMpage since the .exe only takes up 10k (!). It works as well if not better than all the other progs like this out there and quicker since it has so little code. http://www.jfitz.com/software/RAMpage/index.htm

I haven't tried out the above; I can't be bothered as it is unlikely to be better than RAMPage.

(Hope anchors work here.)

Dejavu: First, I didn't mean to imply you were a dummy. My apologies. Second, few if any novices hang out on Betanews.com. Give us a little credit for knowing what a registry is, OK? Third, the registry is not dynamite and it will not harm you if you touch it. You can easily restore it should you erase a needed key. The Undo feature works great. Ask me how I know. :-)

I find this program useful for testing out software that you may not want to keep and don't want to clutter your registry with things that uninstalls don't remove. You install your program, if you don't like it, uninstall it, start up RegCleaner and the newest keys are marked new at the top and can easily be deleted. I use it all the time for this purpose and give it a 5.

HerbKatzIH

HerbKatzIH reviewed v3.8.0.664 on Jan 8, 2001

I appreciate your complaint, andersen, but I feel that it is misplaced. I'm glad that the author is constantly tweaking and improving and changing his program, it makes for new features and Many Nice Things. What IS annoying, though, is the people who submit each new release to FileForum everyday. If people want everyday releases, then they should go to http://www.jv16.org and get them. Otherwise, they should only submit RegCleaner to FileForum every now and then, such as when Jouni Vuorio releases and more-or-less bug-free version. NOT each and every time he releases a sub-pre-semi-beta version update, part 2. Die hard beta testers know where to get every single version, and non-die hard beta testers don't WANT every single version. So, my hat goes off to the author; but guys, stop sending FileForum the RegCleaner updates so often!

andersen

andersen reviewed v3.8.0.661 on Jan 8, 2001

How can this program be any good at all? I mean every day or every week there is a new update! I might try it if I felt that it was stable. Now don't get me wrong, I think that it is great that the programmer is improving on his program and I wish other had the same commitment, but these daly updates are unerving. I'd recommend a monthly update at most for anything other than a serious bug fix.

I do realize that this is a beta forum, but a large majority of the files here in the File Forum do not fall into the beta catagory.

Responsibility is free, take as much as you want!

This program had plenty of potential when using it visually. However, let me echo what some of the other reviewers have stated plus:- I wouldn't touch this program!!! It is dangerous in as much as it deletes entries that it claims are safe to and deletes others that it doesn't mention. I have lost registration details on some of my internet software purchases and now have the task to dig out the confirmation details again and re-register them. The author needs taken out and shot for making this available without thoroughly checking it out first! Will it ever be safe to use? perhaps the author will let us all know!

ilasoft reviewed v3.7.1.641 on Dec 26, 2000

Most of you probably know the j/k about a child telling his father "Dad, what does 'format c: complete' means?" ;)) Format and fdisk are great tools in hands of a person who knows what he is doing. If you don't know what registry means, do NOT use RegCleaner. This is simply a tool that makes your life easier. If you used regedit before, use it. If you don't know what regedit is, keep yourself away from this program.
I have not seen any bugs like deleting entries other then those I chose, but this is a beta == there is a big probability of having nasty things like that.
Also, because it is a beta, it doesn't have all the features one would want (like being able to go directly to an entry in regedit and editing it), but for now this program is THE BEST.
Good luck guys and remeber your limits.

I installed and used the program last night.
I'm a programmer and I see myself as really used to the Win registry.
Even though I checked twice on all the entries displayed for me RegCleaner deleted loads of unlisted entrys.
For example, 9 of my registerd program went unregisterd, ICQ that wasn't even listed in RegClean got so damaged that all UIN's except for the last used one got deleted (from reg), all my CD-R utilities that neither was listed in RegCleaner got there entries deleted so they are all unregisterd now.
Microsoft Visual Studio got some entries deleted aswell.
I haven't browsed through all my programs but my guess would be that more programs got some entries destroyed.
Note that I checked twice to see if any none installed programs where mentioned in RegCleaner before I started to clean.
Well, if you dare to get some registry entries deleted then this program is great for you, RegCleaner didn't screw anything up that I can't fix, but it takes some time and it's annoying.

This program is the best I have ever used. But you MUST know what registry entries you can delete without harmful sideeffects for your OS. So, the best is to look for programs you once used but eventually uninstalled. All program entries of programs you do not use anymore can be safely deleted. If you observe these rules you will find this program to work perfectly.

Recently, though, I've gotten a new computer with WinME pre-installed. Does anyone know if RegCleaner will work with that OS? As I understand it, WinME splits the Registry into three files instead of two, and I wonder if RegCleaner is designed to handle that.

Anyone have experience with WinME, or any word from RegClean's creator on this issue?

A backup is always created but I do have a suggestion for this program which would make it a Classic for those those that do not use Ghost or Drive Image.
If the Author could add the option to creat a bootable floppy and restore the registry from there. Since you can not undo a registry cleanup if you can not boot to windows.
A restore from DOS is always the best answer.

Regclean does just as advertised; cleans your registry COMPLETELY if your not careful. It is a fair utility but not to be used by a novice. You must have prior knowledge as to what files a program installed before using this program to clean your registry. If not, you can destroy vital files that are necessary for Windows to function. Being a technician and programmer I keep several copies of the registry both on my HDD and floppy. (more than Windows usally allocates) Be sure your registry is backed up beforehand. Also back up your hard drive. After this, back up your hard drive. Then after your finished, back it up again, religously.

If someone messes up their works with this app, they're too stupid to read the instructions or thought they were to smart to have had to read them.
This program cleans out my registry so well, I use it 4-5 times a day. It keeps my computer running smooth and 'fast'. It keeps the clutter out and, it gets rid of some programs that don't think all their instructions need to be removed from your system after you do an uninstall.
This guy did a great job with this thing, and I even put it on my sisters computer....and she uses AOL! That just goes to show, that she knows absolutely nothing about computers other than to type, and clik with the mouse...oh...she knows what the cd-rom is .

Uh, the guy's from Finland, you're lucky he speaks english at all. The program works great for me. However it is not a tool for the average user. It mearly helps advanced users reduce the time they spend on registry maintenance.

I'm not letting any program touch my registry that has an author that doesn't bother proofreading his documentation before releasing....look at this english:

". Note that this program is not like those other so called registry cleaners, they search any filenames from registry, then if the file doesn´t exists anymore they remove the registry key or value where this filename was. "

If this thing worked correctly, I'd love it. Sadly, I just spent an hour restoring my system since this thing decided that everything I NEED was NOT needed. The entries it deleted from my registry were all the settings for the majority of my programs: AOL Instant Messenger, Netscape, Quick View and a bunch of others. Take heed of the warning in the instructions. I wish it only deleted the keys that weren't used any longer, but it chose to delete the ones that store all my freaking settings!!! The only good part of this is that Windows still worked fine... all my settings were gone, except for Windows', and it still booted up with no problem. This was all MY fault since I didn't think before letting this program do it's work. I'd actually still have given it a higher rating for that very reason, HOWEVER... the RESTORE did NOT work at all!!! Everything it tried to restore brought up an error and it failed to successfully restore the entries to the registry. So, I'm back up and running and waiting until I start up more programs to see just what else I need to put my settings back in for. No *real* harm done, except for an hour or so of wasted time. BE VERY CAREFUL if you choose to use this program!

Great program for keeping your Registry clean... Did you know that MS's RegClean works on Win2k and WinMe? Anyway, my question about this program is why is there a new build every few days? I'd like to know what sort of things need to be changed that frequently! :)

Normally this is a very good program, but with this build there seems to be a bug. I'm running Windows ME and when I start the program no window is visible. I see it in the task bar but no visible program window.

RegCleaner Rulez! There's no downside to this program! It does just about what you need it to do in the registry. You can even trick into making reg patches for you. :-)
