BANDIT-, -LORD- - nice comments! I believe you are some sort of computer god, living under the illusion that everyone else is some sort of Neo is disguise, LOL.

In nowadays OS there is little chance to get infected without the user consent (yes, you can disablethe download of IE); unfortunately, some of the average computer users - the vast majority of those using a computer, gets tricked into downloading "antivirus" programs all the time - this is how you get it on your computer and is kind of late to think about disabling IE download then, isn't' it?

Most probably they don;t even have a proper antivirus and is kind of late to install that too - your fake antivirus will prevent the installation of anything useful at that point.

The purpose of this program is NOT to over real-time, proactive protection, but to offer you some post-mortem comfort. It does this pretty well, taking into consideration it runs AFTER you got the malware.

I have used it in one occasion, I know what I'm taking about.

This software is pointless. Here's why:
1. It only releases updates AFTER methods for eliminating malware are published and widely known
2. It doesn't release updates nearly often enough
3. other methods of removal are far more effective

I've cleaned these things in safe mode and it can be effective that way, but you can also miss a few steps. The best way is psychlone's method of a PE disk loaded with software that can be updated. I used a modified BartPE disk which loads WinXP as PE. I can load the BartPE either direct from CD, or via USB. I have several versions of it including slim GUI, and full blown "just like normal windows" GUI, and a mostly command line interface. On them, there are a number of utils that I use. Malware Bytes Anti Malware, CCleaner, AdAware, and several AV packages that can update definitions to the RAM drive, but my favorite is Eset which also has an online scanner. After it's cleaned while in the PE environment, THEN i boot to safe mode, check my msconfig, startup folder. temp folders, and services that run at boot to make sure the offending crapware is disabled/quarantined/deleted. THEN, I boot to normal. BartPE has not failed me one single time in the 8 years I've been using it, and my cleaning practices have been 100% to date.

Avoid this junk.

I too have removed a fake AV from a friends PC recently using similar steps to Psychlone.

I still & will always maintain keeping such things off your PC as dvijaydev46 says is by far the best policy.

Buying the full version of Malwarebytes is about the cheapest & best way of doing this. Why people do not learn & do this is beyond my comprehension.

Also using an imaging program can also save a lot of heartache & hours re-installing, sadly people only learn this & a regular backup routine AFTER data loss.

While evil people make software to destroy hard work you need more than ever to Backup - Backup - & Backup.

In my opinion, Malwarebytes' Antimalware can remove fake antivirus software without any user intervention if you have purchased it. If you use the free version, it can remove most of the rouge apps after an on-demand scan.

@dssdbs: Clearly you don't have any qualification to tell people to just format and install their OS from scratch, especially considering the fact that some malware will hide in the boot sector and there's nothing short of a DBAN/LLF that will eradicate it.

This program is OK for what it does.
I've eradicated literally thousands of computers of malware, especially the new breed of FAKEAV/Thinkpoint/etc.
This is how it goes for me:
1) Boot to a PE disk (OR run RKILL from within Windows where possible)
2) Use Malwarebytes
3) Run Combofix (where applicable)
4) Reboot

If this utility were to have better detection and SOME FORM of removal, it would be worth it's weight in internets...but it's not there yet.
All I see this as, is a new, automated version of RKILL that shuts down the virus processes for you...nothing more.

I still prefer to get rid of viruses BEFORE Windows loads - this way, they can't hide from you...

A good program for those new to PC's although if you have the full version of Malwarebytes/Prevx running you won't get infected in the first place. I sent the link of this program to a few of my friends. (Might cut down on the phone calls)

dssdbs, If you do a new full install & use 'Acronis True Image' it's a matter of 6 minutes to restore an image you took days or even weeks ago with everything intact & working. It would take me days to do a full re-install as I have many specialist programs on. Sorry for digressing.

Excellent tool. If only I had it yesterday, had to remove ThinkPoint of clients laptop (Microsoft Security Essentials Fix It Right Up. But this would have been a lot quicker, seeing as the scan took over 2 hours (old laptop obviously!).

Can you please provide a change-log?

why would anyone use something like this? If you PC has become infected with one of these "Fake Anti-Virus Programs", then it's time to format your PC and start over, you will never be completely free from it.

This is a specialized scanner/cleaner designed to work against a few specific infections. It works. It deactivates the infestation enough so you can use your computer without constant crippling popups. You can then use a regular AV, anti-trojan, or anti-spyware program to finish removing the files and registry entries. This scanner is therefore very valuable for removing this genre of very stubborn infections. I think anyone that rates it below a 3 has not tried it against infections for which it was designed. (fake antiviruses, fake scanners, fake security tools). Keep it handy, eventually you'll need it for one of these vicious infections. If you don't get infected, a friend or relative certainly will.

Worthless app. Tried last night on a Virtual PC I had intentionally infected. Failed to remove all but 1 rouge. The one it did remove wasn't fully cleaned up either. It left the one rouge's HKLM\Run entry, causing Windows to spit out an error at every boot until I manually deleted the entry.

I use a method similar to -Lord- below me. I also prefer Malwarebytes. Has fixed a good 97% of PCs for me. If I end up with a stubborn one and need heavy artillery, I use combofix.

I've used several of these removers including this one. As reported, many times those fake AV programs, more commonly referred to as "ransom-ware" because they hold your system hostage wanting you to pay for it, will not allow you to click on anything or run anything in efforts to keep you from shutting them down and removing them. The best way around this is to reboot your machine, and just before you see where windows begins to load, hit F8 and select safe mode. When in safemode, click on start, run, and type in msconfig and hit enter. Go to the start up tab and deselect the offending application, usually one with no clear description of itself. uncheck it all if you have to. then reboot normally, download and install Malwarebytes anti malware program, update it, then scan. It has not failed me yet. Following the scan, run the cleaner, and reboot. Once rebooted, run msconfig again, and put the services back that you need at boot time. Reboot again, and you should be done.

This program works to a degree, but not nearly as comprehensive or reliable as Malware Bytes.

I myself have found it to be poor Virus remover but when you have more than 1 computer no Virus is safe dochicky try using a second computer and installing the HD as a slave or better still use make and use a livecd/dvd like ultmate boot cd etc etc or beter still do a clean install + appz + configure copy all of your important files over to a second drive and and finally image then when you have a nasty on your computer 10-15 mins later back up and running and no nasty
's....

The fake anti-virus that attacked me wouldn't let me run anything or click on anything. It filled the system tray with notification icons & I had to unplug my machine because I couldn't shut it down.
The only way I got this program to work is after plugging my machine back in and using my HP system recovery option at start up. I chose to use windows system restore from that menu.
Then I could run this program that I had copied to a CD to remove the fake software.
As for running this program as soon as you are attacked, it didn't work that way for me. It should be a stronger program than the fake attacker & take over control of the situation.

By the way, I now have 2 network connection icons in my control panel & I can't get rid of the extra one. I've tried many things and searched the internet for a remedy to no avail. I'm not sure if this program did that or the fake virus scanner hat attacked me. Because I couldn't access or do anything while being attacked.

@CyberDoc999 "Why do people review stuff they have not tried?"

I've tried it on several different machines. Practically worthless tool as it found 1 infection out of several machines infected and then it couldn't even clean it. I gave it 2 stars for at least trying! Use c0mbofix and MB, which will actually do the job.

@oakleez, For use this program, need to install fake antivirus first. Do anyone really need to do that? :) The best way to uninstall fake antivirus - do not install it, if you have ad blocker such AM or ABP, instantly prevents these ads and block pop-ups from fishing sites, everything to be OK. Buy from approved vendors only, or use free AV, such Comodo or Avira

coover: why review something if you haven't used it?

I ran into at least a couple fake AV malware apps that even malwarebytes struggled with. Many of the newer fake AVs also target Malwarebytes/AVG/etc and prevent you from running those apps to clean the malware which makes this app even more valuable.

Also, scanning a system with this app takes about 1/10th the time as a full malwarebytes scan.

This app does exactly what it claims to do, does it quickly, and I have had great results. Whenever I run into fake AV malware on a system this is my go-to app. 5/5.
