Rival Messenger is a Windows based instant messaging client powered by Jabber, the most flexible XML router. It is based roughly on everything good that's available in the different commercial Instant Messaging Clients. With the ICQ style layout, its easy to find your way around. With the ability to have messages, chats, URL's, and much more going back and forward to your friends that may happen to be on ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, etc. all from the one program, it makes things very very easy and fun.

Never mind why you'd choose it over Trillian; why would you choose it over Miranda IM?

first of all it uses jabber as transport protocol. jabber is nice and not limit to icq/aim/msn only. jabber is a full featured xml router with the ability to "carry" almost everything through users. one very nice point at jabber is that your contacts are hold on the server. if you use several computers to access the internet (work/home/laptop/etc.) you could easily to this with jabber/rival combination. you can also use it from several places at the same time (currently there are some limitations with the icq/aim transports in this).
hopefully this gives you a little light why some people really like jabber :)
rival is one of the best clients for jabber servers. there are several others and not only for windows.

I am sorry for the bad review, but the finding the some others have posted regarding the slowness in application is indeed true.
Another simple question... Why would I choose this over trillian? - Can you sell me on this one? - Anyone?

I haven't tried this app yet, but I second each of Jango_Fetts_Clone's comments.

Wonko: "you should *never* put a "Cancel" button to the left of an "Apply" button!"
Tell that to Microsoft, every cancel button in windows is to the left of the apply button.
Zulugrid: "The Options dialog took like 10 seconds to even begin to become visible on my screen (I'm running a 1.4GHz w/ 512MB so it shouldn't have taken so long..)."
Something is wrong with your system then, because on my PII 233 w/128MB (running XP!) it comes up in about 2.
Zulugrid: "It didn't create a Start Menu item so now I have to go to the Add/Remove Programs dialog to remove it.. "
Actually this is how Windows software is SUPPOSED to act. You are supposed to remove things from the Add/Remove Programs applet. The fact that many programs add a seperate icon in the programs menu is sometimes nice, but is definately not a reqirement.
