@yours truly I agree with you that pasting a URL is broken in Safari, and to me it is inexcusable for a browser to not allow you to simply paste a URL. In fact, a 'paste and go' feature is pretty much standard for most modern web browsers. There is, however, a trick which allows you to paste URL's in Safari. After you paste the URL, click the space bar.

Other than that, I have always enjoyed Safari because it renders fonts much better than any other browser. If I am going to spend any time reading text on web pages, I will always use Safari. Far less strain on my old eyes.

Yours Truly

Yours Truly reviewed v5.0.4 on Mar 10, 2011

Safari 5.0.4 running on Windows 7 64-bit (and other Windows OS's?) still does not does not allow a person to paste an URL into the address field and go to (load) that new URL: neither is there is a "Go (to)" button, and the Reload page button just reloads the current page it is already on, and pressing the Enter key also just reloads the current page it is already on.

The above has kept me away from using Safari on Windows.

this last safari works fine on windows xp 32-bit actually, it's not as fast as the last chrome, but as they look exactly the same, I would prefere safari cause of the adding of more settings than chrome. that's not hard as chrome has very little options in the settings. safari settings are not that huge but it's a noticeable difference between the 2 browsers. and about extensions, the ghostery extension into chrome isnt working for all pages as the one for safari is blocking all tracers that spy your surf.
safari for windows is a good browser, not as fast as chrome, without all those add-ons that bring power to firefox, but if you use to use several browsers, this one is good enough to take place beside Firefox, chrome and Opera on a windows system.

I am running Windows 7 64-bit. Safari running on this OS does not seem to allow a user to paste an URL into the address field and go to (load) that new URL: there is no "go" button, the reload page button just reloads the current page it is already on, and pressing the Enter key also just reloads the current page it is already on?
I know that by pressing the Space bar and then pressing the Enter key will take you to the new website. But what I am looking for is something akin to the "paste and go" extension (as used in Opera, Chrome and Firefox 4 beta) - does anyone know of such an available extension? (There is none listed in the Safari Extension Gallery.)
Thanks.

Gave this a try for the first time today the PC version. A lot like Chrome but I think not quite as fast. Still good though.

It seems there isn't a lot in the latest, Opera, Safari, Chrome, Firefox in speed etc.. It's down to the one you prefer, I prefer Chrome but I could live happily with Safari. And I have tried them all this week on last weeks image.

It's good to see similar performing browsers to choose from that give features we prefer.

The one reason I prefer Safari sometimes to other browsers is for its font smoothing. No other browser comes close to rendering fonts the way Safari can. It just make websites so much easier to read. However, the one thing I do not like is that Safari does not have icons on its bookmarks bar. I don't like "wordy" bookmark bars, and prefer just to stick the icons on the bar (which I can do in all other browsers). If and when Safari includes icons, I will be much more likely to use it much more often. As it is now, I just don't use Safari as my main browser because of this.

Hitherto i was using Firefox4 beta and Opera 10.70 and now and then Chrome.Very recently i have come across Safari5.0.2 and installed it. Oh it is a great browser wonderful speed excellent interface. If you see the web pages you love it so much.It uses less resources and there a few useful extensions and you need not install Adblock either. In the preferences option there is 'Reset Opera' is wonderful and with that you can control the memory usage .The HTML view is so wonderful ,it is very very clear and have digital look. But book marks menu should be improved.I am not using 'Topsites' option as it takes lot of memory. Finally it is a great one and made it my default browser.

DoHickey

DoHickey reviewed v5.0.2 on Sep 9, 2010

Well it's fast, but I have issues with it.
Even though I unchecked the install for Apple update, it installed anyway.
I don't like to having to search & click & configure this and that and click and search & click to get this to look and feel the way I want. Right at the first run of the fresh install it should show the tab bar. I do not like the bookmarks bar. The menu bar should be showing also. Things just hit me the wrong way at first run. Yes I am a stickler for having things easy from the start without having to configure things to death.
The speed doesn't make up for it being an Apple product that doesn't play that nice with Windows.
And I couldn't find any themes or skins to change that ugly tan look.
I am not a fan of Apple or this browser & probably never will be.

This is damn fast! I can't believe what improvements they have made. I totally forgot that this is the original chrome! The interface that google copied! This is FASTER than chrome! The tabs are a little weird being on the bottom. It does include Apple Software Updater and Bonjour. I want software that keeps itself up to date. Bonjour is a network discovery tools for finding things like your wireless printer. I was so impressed that I installed Quicktime via the software updater, BIG MISTAKE! Nothing but a constant upgrade to PRO nag. At least their still the fastest browser on the planet and now they integrate into windows. We should THANKFUL that APPLE even took the time to Port this to Windows!

I installed this in a VirtualBox VM because Apple products are uninstallable (I defy anyone to contravene that statement of fact) and was immediately appraised of the obvious:

This is a typical Apple product. It's an exercise in form far surpassing function; in short it's a pretty conversation piece that's decidedly overhyped and borderline useless. Apple doesn't create products and never has; it packages spin extremely efficiently and effectively. Safari, Quicktime, the iPod, the iPhone, the Mac. All are pretty, shiny and useless to anyone who wants meaningful functionality.

Safari is no exception. Firefox isn't as pretty but is far more configurable and useful. IE has better integration. Chrome is, well, Chrome. That leases this tarted u8p offering out in the cold for real users.

ONE star.

For elegance, you simply can't beat this browser; this version is a definite improvement over version four. From my personal experience, with this version, there isn't anything that I've thrown at it that it doesn't render well.

Do I miss extensions as with Firefox? Yes! I do believe however, that given time and ingenuity on the part of those interested, we'll see extensions that will satisfy everyone acquainted with a browser today.

I fully admit to being a browser junkie. I think it's safe to say that many of us at BetaNews suffer from this affliction. I can't say that I have one single favorite browser, and I use each browser for different purposes. Safari has always been high on my list for one basic reason - it renders websites much more sharply and clearly than any other browser. My eyes are not the best, and I experience much less eye strain when using Safari. This new version of Safari is notably faster than 4.0, and without doing any benchmarks, it seems like it is equal to the speed of the other browsers. While I use some extensions, I'm not the type of person who adds them frivolously. I'm interested to see what kind of useful extensions will be available for Safari.

I am rating Safari 5.0 with a "4". Here are my reasons why:
- On Windows 7, when pinning Safari 5.0 to my taskbar, the Safari Icon does not show up. This is a small thing for sure, but it is distracting to me.
- I don't like the "Top Sites" feature at all. I wish it were more like Opera's Speed Dial (or the Speed Dial add-ons for Firefox and Chrome)
- The bookmark bar is very bland, and is something I have never liked about Safari. I sincerely wish that Safari would render the site icons in the toolbar.

Safari is a full-scope browser, easy to master, relatively light on system resources.

As to speed, my amateur testing of my installed browsers (all are latest versions) ranks them as follows (from fastest to slowest): K-meleon 1.6 alpha, Opera+turbo on auto, Chrome, Firefox no extensions, Safari, Firefox w/extensions, QTWeb, Cometbird

As to impact on cpu, Chrome is verry heavy (LOTS of separate processes), K-meleon is the lightest.

As to security -- I run browsers under Drop My Rights &/or Shadow Defender, plus I image my system drive weekly, so security is not an issue.

However, for "stand-alone" security, Firefox with Noscript extension is fairly safe. IMO, none of the other browsers can be truly safe from drive-bys etc. on their own.

Wow, i really didn't expect this to be so bad on a PC. I've tried it on a Mac and it seems OK.
Performance is abysmal despite all the benchmarks i see on the net. It really is slow. Start up time on my computer is of the order of about 15 seconds, in other words even slower than firefox *with* over a dozen addons.
The top sites "quick dial" type feature doesn't keep all the sites i add despite "pinning" them and they take an age to show up when you open a new tab.
Font's are badly displayed and like trying to read underwater (i tried my best with the font smoothing settings but nothing was decent)
Last but not least (not just for PC but for Mac as well) it it super Uncustomisable, absolutely completely the opposite of Firefox or Opera. You can drag a few buttons around on the toolbar and that's about it. You can't get rid of the search box. You can have it Steve Job's way or you can shove it basically!
Add on top of that it's the worst browser for security (though i think that was possibly for Mac and not PC).
Oh and guess what? it keeps me logged into FileForum across browser restarts. So that means it's not clearing down cookies. But wait, can i make it discard cookies on exiting? Nope. No wonder it's a security nightmare.
Ironically on a PC even IE8 is better than this steaming turd. The only reason i waste hard drive space on this is because i need it for testing. For the love of god somebody kill this horrible creation.

Hard to review when it won't install - that is, when presented with the choice to install without Bonjour, which has never worked as advertised on any of my machines, I took it.

Once you do that the installer seems to be lightning fast, but all it is doing is erroring out, without any notice.

To the people who write this stuff - if something cannot be left out of an install, why give the user a choice?

A great browser for sure! On my Mac it's my absolute favorite, but on PC I do use it only seldom, using Opera since v3 and not being disappointed, it still is my choice.

Anyway: Apple (and the Webkit dev-team) did an amazing job! Browsing is really fun with Safari.

If only it's download size would be smaller, but that must be because of the libs needed to realize it's unique Apple-typical "feel" (GUI blending, skin, etc). Still no reason to rate it less than it deserves.

- Safari has nice font smoothing effect on all websites.

Cons:
- It crashes very easily.
- Does not fully support 120DPI.
- Sometimes lags heavily, probably the retarded Top Sites module working in the background.
- Top Sites module which unnecessary tries to be something more than a well known from other web browsers Speed Dial function.
- Lack of anty-ads feature.
- Poor bookmarks management.
- Plugins , does it have any ?

I think these new versions of Safari browser is actually really good, like 3.2.2 and this new one ver 4. They are very fast and works all the time with no interruptions what so ever for me. Also Apple`s new security features is very good. Over all a very secure fast and functional browser, at least for me.

Ok Browser. Like Chrome, basically no features. Something i'm not looking for in a browser. Speed, is there really a difference anymore. I have IE8, Seamonkey, Firefox, Opera and Chrome. None of these is any faster than the other. Only thing that dictates how fast a site comes up is the site itself. Some sites like Cnn and Google come up in a flash, others dont. 1 of the problems i have, like i do with IE8 and chrome, is this small icons in the toolbar that seems to be popular. Sorry, give me a the old big toolbar icons. Or at least give me the chance to chose the size, like in Seamonkey and Firefox. One final thing, the bookmark management is pretty louzy here. Probably the worse of all the browsers out there.

Thanks, Galifray! I wouldn't have bothered downloading this if it hadn't been for your comment about the changed UI. I absolutely HATED the Mac OS look. The new look I quite like. It's very similar to Google Chrome, and as fast.

Until there's an ad-blocker I won't use this as a regular browser, though, let alone as my default.

Overall, a commendable effort from Apple.

EDIT: I just found one problem that may or may not be Safari's fault. On one site, when I click the "back" button the URL displayed changes to that of the previous page but the page remains the same. I have to refresh the page for it to change. I can't reproduce it here on Betanews, though. I've never seen a similar problem with any other browser..

Galifray

Galifray reviewed v4.28.16.0 Beta on Feb 24, 2009

Well, color me surprised. This beta does not skin the entire browser window. Just the buttons. And the tab bar is on top (yeah, it's similar to Google Chrome), but I like it. It also has windows font smoothing if I choose, which is a complaint that some had about Safari 3.x. I'm not sure yet about Top Sites as I don't see an editing function for it, but this is a beta.

Good work Apple, you do listen to the users.

"Acid 3 Compliance

Safari is the first — and only — web browser to pass Acid 3. Acid 3 tests a browser’s ability to fully render pages using the web standards used to build dynamic, next-generation websites, including CSS, JavaScript, XML, and SVG."

Lie.

You'll also note that Full-Page Zoom is listed twice.

I can't stand to use a product where they have to lie to get me to try it.
Terrible marketing.

sturgess

sturgess reviewed v4.28.16.0 Beta on Feb 24, 2009

Well I'd tried all the rest, so thought what the heck lets give Safari a whirl. It's very quick, as quick as Chrome, and Chrome is blisteringly quick. I was disappointed not to be able to set up something called Top Sites, where all your favourites are supposed to appear in 3D, mine did not, they just sat there doing nothing. Then while I was musing as to whether I should make it my default, it froze. So it's not my default, it's in the bin. I'm now posting this with Opera 10 alpha which now has a spell checker, only taken them five years to install one. But got to say this spell checked version of old Opera is OK, I'm liking it, not as fast as Chrome, but has lasted longer than Safari so for the time being I'm an Opera fan, until it crashes that is, then it'll be back to best of the best Chrome.

Safari _is_ fast, it renders smoothly and is a quite good browser. I do use Opera because I'm using it for years, but also sometimes use Safari. I never really got used to Firefox, it's slow, a memory hog and hasn't got the convenient "feeling" I have with Opera and Safari. IE is absolutely out of question, I only use that crap if I really need to (corporate intranet forces us :-( ).

So 5 stars is definitely an appropriate rating from me.

@Galifray: good point! I also have to add: Safari includes quite a lot of GUI languages, this also adds to it's size. But IMHO opinion download size nowadays can quite be ignored.

Can't even handle the basics. Font smoothing - although font smudging would be more appropriate description - is abysmal.

This is clearly an Apple/Safari issue. Google Chrome has the same rendering engine (Web Kit) and it displays fonts correctly. Safari renders fonts as though they were written with a big fat magic marker. Horrible.

I think this is a deliberate strategy by Apple to make Windows look bad. "Hey, Windows can't even make type look good - you should switch to the Mac." And that's shameful - though consistent with the Steve Jobs ethos.

alanpalmer

alanpalmer reviewed v3.2 on Nov 14, 2008

I can't see any use for releasing this browser for Windows apart from for Web developers. It's nowhere as fully-featured as Firefox, Opera or Chrome. I dislike particularly the Mac-type UI, where I can't resize windows in the same way as normal. There are other petty annoyances as well.

It is useful to a limited degree when developing Web pages. The owner (a Mac user) of one site I designed kept complaining that a particular line was incorrectly placed, but I couldn't see what she meant. Once I downloaded Safari I saw the problem and could work around it. The site was fine in IE, Opera and Firefox, so it was a Safari-only issue.

How anyone could like this over Opera, Firefox, hell, (even IE 6 for crying out loud, IE 7 blows this out of the water)I will never understand.

There's virtually NO customizing whatsoever, this is terribly unfortunate because the interface is a train wreck. You can't dynamically select a download directory, its memory usage is off the charts, and the installer doesn't even work properly.

There are many more things to list that make this a truly terrible browser...and I expected better from Apple...they should just leave the Windows user base alone...Safari is terrible on both platforms and iTunes does Apple no credit with how terrible it is on Windows.

If the default font rendering in Safari weren't so horrible on the PC and they hadn't pushed it out as an "update" to Quicktime/iTunes in an effort to literally trick PC users into trying it, I'd be a bit kinder.

But there's really no good excuse for either one.

There's absolutely no reason I can think of to use this over Opera, Firefox 3, or even Internet Explorer. None at all. It's fast, efficient, and very standards-compliant, but so is Opera and FF3, and both of those are far more feature-rich.

Taken on its own, it's not a bad browser (which is why I give it a three, and not something lower), but it really makes no sense for Apple to be spending resources on pushing this on PC users when the (free) competition ALL bring more to the table.

Safari has really shaped up since the last Windows release. This browser has potential to be great, but the usual problems are still holding it back. The major problem is the horrible interface. This may work on a Mac, where you're forced to stare at everything that already looks like this, but in Windows it is unacceptable.

Font rendering is somewhat improved, but still too blurry for most Windows users. Lack of ad blocking or an ad blocking addon also holds it back, since all other browsers can do this.

Sure it has a few flaws and things I'd like to see added (like true one window browsing, customizable link colors / styles, and the ability to change from just the blue color of widgets), but it works well and quickly.

It seems OK; at least, I've been running it for over two minutes and not had a crash yet. Those few pages I've tried it on seemed to render OK and moderately quickly. It doesn't have anything like the extensions of Firefox or the built-in features and speed of Opera, so Opera will stay as my default browser, with FF as a back-up.

I have installed the earlier betas and can't see any difference so far from them. I chose not to install Bonjour (as before) and the install went ahead without problems.

After having used each incremential version from v3.0.0 - v3.0.4 for Windows with Vista 32-Bit, I installed this sans-Bonjour and sans-Apple Update.

It launched and said it was missing components and that I would need to reinstall.

I uninstalled and reinstalled - wasn't asked about Apple Update, but had the option to install Bonjour. OK. Finished installing, same error. I'll need to reboot to see if it works.

Point being, Apple Applications are held to a higher standard in my books because they 'just work'. And the simplicity of the install followed by the application failing was a shocker.

--

I'm sure I'll fix this and that Apple will fix it too in v3.5.1.

Support for HTML 5 / CSS4 / etc. is nice, however, unless Apple pulls a Microsoft Strongarm technique (like forcing it for functionality on their own website(s) and iWeb sites), I see this as bragging rights. Almost useless until IE catches up (and FF is in the same boat unfortunately).

Words cant explain how... lame Safari feels.

Both Opera load faster, render faster and does everything more smoothly. Page loading times are not really an issue at all and I feet almost no differce between browsers. Acid test scores mean hardly anything in the real world - Konq scores very well but sucks in real world performance, Safari scores well and sucks at rendering things like blog layout. Pointless from a 'consumer' perspective.

The problem is that Safari just has... nothing. There is no reason to install something that has no features, that has gaping security and a bad user experience. It feels like a step in the wrong direction - its like Apple does IE6.

Rendering is good although some pages can't load like Craiglist and make it crash...

But certainly not comparable to Opera and other browsers : a lot of features are simply lacking like fast rewind , group or sessions saving and browsing, ad-blocking, customization of tab-browsing, of UI, etc...

Yes it's fast but not features-rich, so...

Sorry guys but I have to strongly DIS-agree with the majority of you here. This updated beta version simply rocks. It's much more stable, MUCH lighter on system resources and actually releases memory when you minimize it unlike Firefox and sadly Firefox 3.0 still won't include this feature.

The rendering speed is lightning fast just as Apple advertises. The new Leopard UI in Safari 3 beta is gorgeous even on an ancient and outdated Windows XP system. Keep in mind this is still in beta so there is still much more to come. :) Say hello to my new default browser. ^--^

Second,i downloaded this browser several times giving it a chance with every update and each time after trying to use it for a day it just force me to uninstall it again, and what makes me more angry is that to uninstall it i need to close my Firefoxie, this make me nervous because i just want to know what kind of relation that binds it with Firefox.

For me the ranking should be:
1. Firefox (Fast loading, Open Source, Supports Extensions, needs productivity features and synchronization features as we can't trust any developers, and a better interface).
2. Internet Explorer (great has parental controls, needs some speed in loading and switching pages.
3. Opera (good as a third browser, needs some speed and a better interface)
4. Safari (horrible, but private browsing is a great idea)

Safari is not my default browser and they have a long way to go to even have a chance to be so, but I do encourage their development. It took a sucessful Firefox to get Microsoft back on the stick to continue development on Internet Explorer (which was really needed), and a sucessful Safari will motivate both Mozilla and MS. Many of the bugs reported by other users have apparently been fixed, and relatively quickly. I never suffered from the text display problems, but they should have been found by alpha testers, not in a public beta. Did Apple only use testers with US English versions of Windows? I never had problems with bookmarks, either.

My main gripe is that Apple insist on the Mac convention of only being able to resize windows from the bottom right-hand corner. I don't mind the Mac-like GUI, but some skins would be nice. Still it's only in (hopefully early) beta, so they might introduce them later on...

The Safari 3.0.1 update is the first Windows version that enables Apple's Private Browsing feature. This feature didn't work in Safari 3.0.0 even after resetting the browser. So far Safari for Windows seems considerably slower than Firefox 2.0.0.4 at rendering web pages. Safari also has no spell check as you type feature and no ad blocking. I give the browser a 3 since it's at least barely useable.

I do find Apple's claims about Opera being the slowest at rendering web pages very amusing. I didn't think any web browser was slower than Microsoft Internet Explorer.

After clearing the cache for each of the 4 browsers mentioned below, I found Safari 3.01 using 34468 KB memory on one specific web page. IE 7.0.6000.16473 used 27296 KB on the same page, Firefox 2.04 used 28796 KB, while Opera 9.21 Build 8776 used 26160 KB. The differences between IE, Firefox, and Opera were minimal, whereas Safari seems to use about 25% more memory than the other 3. This is still an improvement for Safari over version 3, which used about twice as much memory as the other 3.

I really like it. It needs a few things but Apple is very good about listening to what their beta testers suggest.

I've had no problems with it and it is just as fast as Firefox and it is faster than IE7 for me.

What needs improved:

1. Something other than the boring default grey theme.

2. Some sort of add-ons or extensions so I can block ads among other things.

3. I cannot resize the browser unless I use the lower right hand corner. It doesn't resize from anywhere else.

4. It will still not warn before closing the browser when multiple tabs are open (even though I have that option checked in prefs).

Heck just between yesterday and today they fixed the window size memory. Now it will remember the size of the window that you last set it at when closed.

I think Apple kicks butt and this is a good first start to a Windows browser.

AS usual with Apple Safari is nicely presented and does what it is supposed to. However, it is also much slower to load sites than Firefox, a site which took 7 seconds in Firefox to 14 in Safari. This was true of all the other sites I tested, and shows Safari to be about half the speed as Firefox. It also took longer to load even though my Firefox is packed with extentions. For these reasons I can only give it a 3 out of 5. Hopefully, it will improve of the months and it is always nice to see competition for Microsofts strangle hold.

siryak: If you mean the Status Bar then you can switch it on under the View menu, along with a tab bar.

Not good. It is a memory hog for starters. It uses more than any other browser I have used: Opera, FF, IE, Seamonkey. I don't like how the address bar is set up. I also don't like that there is no bottom bar. FF is much faster, uses less memory, and has a wide variety of plugins to give it a large lead on features.

Overall, Not that good. The gui was nothing to brag about. Plus it lacks allot of features i've grown to like with Firefox and Seamonkey. I guess there might be an audience out there for this. But with all the other stable web browser out there, this pretty much is a wasted effort by Apple.

ShiftedBlue

ShiftedBlue reviewed v3 Beta on Jun 14, 2007

No crashes so far, but Safari is far from being competitive on the Windows platform with the likes of Firefox and Opera. It just doesn't have the features or customization of a full-time, primary browser. It's noticeably faster than the competition, but speed isn't everything.

I hope it'll get better, because there's potential here. For now, though, it's a pass.

safari is one of the best browsers for windows now IMO. it is fast, not bloated and I have not had any of the bugs that you people have talked about or others have mentioned. i hope they add more features to this program though. its kinda dull right now. i still give it 5 stars because its faster than IE, FF and any other browser.

Ive bveen testing since it came out and havent seen any major problems. Ive seen one small thing that i keep getting popups using safari maybe a bug ni the popup blocker. Internet Exploer is in trouble now with safari on windows. Safari is way faster then ie and firefox.

First off, even though Safari 3 for Windows is technically 'beta' - this does not mean pointing out major issues is forbidden.

Frankly when we see fanboys of Apple mocking a user for using Windows when they have a problem with this buggy release and saying the problem is the user & "their computer being plagued with a trojan or virus" is crazy. Fanboy attitudes will not win converts.

Fileforum allows us to review betas. This program is more alpha than anything. Having "too many fonts" (anything above 800) results in no text on webpages as well as the user interface. Playing around with the plist file corrects some of these issues, even for normal (everyday home) users of both Mac and Windows this is a little extreme step when you take into account this is a public open beta, this should be more stable than it currently is. Visiting the Discussion forum on apple.com there is more issues with the Windows beta than Mac, but there are issues on both sides.

When you deal with projects that require unique fonts for work - you don't expect to deal with a browser that fails to work to convince you to remove fonts until it does.

Windows and Mac users have better alternatives at this time; Firefox, Opera, Omniweb, Camino, heck even Windows users are better off with IE7 than this right now.

Oh I also find it sad that some user would change their rating on this buggy browser release because they want to show loyalty. You show loyalty to a product by helping it grow into a better product - not selling out to fanboys. Stand up to ignorant comments people! This can be a nice alternative browser, only if they really add a community to build on and correct the silly bugs... but right now both users of Windows and Mac are better off with an alternative browser than this 'beta.'

I like it. I visited a number of sites that I go to regularly, and it rendered all the pages quickly, and as far as I could see, accurately. I like the MacOS look of the UI and clear font display. It hasn't got an adblocker or some other refinements, so I'll only give it a 4, but it's still in beta so more features may be added later. I'll stick with Opera as my main browser, though.

Twinsdad, you have computer problems-- it's not a Safari problem.
If you're on Vista and able to actually download the file, right-click setup file and select: run as administrator.

I know that majority of Mac users disdain Safari for Moz variants, but i actually like Safari:
"w/o user fiddling" it's the browser best geared for modern monitors and graphics systems...and as well the default fonts make menus, etc. very readable 'even though they're actually smaller than other browsers' and even when on non-contrasting backgrounds... everything combines to make the browsing experience very visually appealing. Just compare side by side w/ another browser the colors/contrasts/text.

Of course, how very fast sites render is another major plus.
Other pluses: autocomplete, bookmarks & plugins(from other browsers are ready to go-- no importing & downloading needed), page 'snapback' feature...

Yes, there are negatives: back/forward buttons need to popup a selection of page history, popup blocker needs toolbar button AND some options, not every type of embedded video renders correctly or even plays...

All in all, pluses way outweigh negatives...it's definitely worth a try.

it doesn't have many options, nor support for themes or extensions. the mouse navigation has few features (i can't use back and forward buttons on my mouse, i can't middle click to scroll pages). and the fonts look different from ie or gecko-based browsers. but i like the khtml engine because it's fast (maybe because there are no extensions - firefox and netscape were fast too, but after installing add-ons they slowed down).

terminalx

terminalx reviewed v3 Beta on Jun 12, 2007

This is nice but it just feels like a faster firefox without the added functionality of extensions galore.

One thing I have noticed with all Apple software is it likes to make shortcuts and take over your pc (I am looking at you QT)

Personally, I don't like the added toolbar for search on any browser and usually try to get rid of it, but safari doesn't let you do this you either trash the whole address bar or nothing.

I do like that it imported all my bookmarks without me telling it to but you have to go an extra step to get to them.

Honestly, since everything is pretty much the same with both a apple pc and a windows pc I see Apple becoming a software company and ditching their computers.

First impressions are good. Never used this browser before, but it seems really fast and responsive. Probably moreso than IE or Firefox. I also like the default font, it's much thicker and looks nicer (at least to me) than the one in Firefox.

I imagine many people will fault it for using lots of ram though. As of this writing: 1 page open (betanews.com) and it's using close to 130mb.

ZenWarrior

ZenWarrior reviewed v3 Beta on Jun 12, 2007

Funny, but indifference here, too. It does navigate between pages quickly, especially those cached. On the other hand, I could almost have soft-boiled an egg as I waited for it to initially load.

Interface? As someone noted, it's as clean as IE7, but I've not really liked that look since its inception. That said, I'd say the two are pretty much equal.

Marketing note to Apple: Had you really wanted me to use it for a while, especially after opening it for the very first time, you'd have enabled me to easily import my IE faves. Sorry, but I'll not be typing any URLs anew over the next few days, at least.

All that said, I now realize how completely spoiled I am by Maxthon. Just one thing as an example. Without even thinking, I performed a super drag-n-drop with Safari (to write this review), but nothing happened. No new tab opened with the link's URL. :^) (Oops.) Also, I can't believe all the ads I've never before seen! The internet is a flashing billboard!

In sum, I don't find that much more special with Safari over any other browser. I'd even say it's a step behind most Windows browsers. Given there's room enough on hard drives these days, I'll keep it installed and use it occasionally as a diversion from the tedium of some boring day.

(Dzamn, there's also no spell-cheker add-on. Jeesh, search is really lacking, too. And, that's it for customizing my toolbars? Again, super-spoiled by Maxthon.)

eclipsingdivinity

eclipsingdivinity reviewed v3 Beta on Jun 11, 2007

I am quite indifferent at the moment. Most people are crazy for Apple software and Safari is one of thangs that people love. My initial observations

+ Fast, fast, fast - It's snappier than Internet Explorer 7 by far

+ Clean Interface - That rivals that of IE7. The only difference is that IE7 actually looks right for Vista.

- Fonts don't work well in Vista - I prefer IE7's cleartype fonts anyday. They are much more enjoyable on the eyes.

- Clunky when maximizing - they need to work on compatibility with Aero. Otherwise the effects inside the browser are nice.

--
I can see using this in the future. But in my opinion it only competes with Firefox for hard drive space on my PC. After all, IE is necessary and I don't have room to use two more. Lets see how Mozilla and Apple duke it out in the next couple of months.

urbanriot

urbanriot reviewed v3 Beta on Jun 11, 2007

Horribly slow to load compared to Firefox, let alone Internet Explorer or Opera. Address bar is funny - you can't right click and select all, or select the address bar text quickly like other browsers. Although the browsing experience itself is smooth and the rendering seems quick. I also did not experience any browser or application errors.

As for the mouse button issue, you can Program-specific map them to Alt+Left or Ctrl+[ for back and Alt+Right or Ctrl+] for Forward and they'll work.

I think this is a nice step by Apple, but I'll be sticking to Firefox for functionality.

Akeru

Akeru reviewed v3 Beta on Jun 11, 2007

Slow and clunky. Ugly fonts, high CPU/RAM utilization. Basic Windows functions cannot be performed within the browser. Mouse buttons do not work with Back/Forward functionality. No import/export feature for bookmarks. Cannot mass-highlight when editing bookmarks. Does not fully maximize and does not like to stay maximized after minimizing. Cannot mouse over cryptic icons to view their actual function.

Well, that's all I've found in about 10 minutes of using it so far. This browser might be good enough for Apple zealots, but it can't cut it in Windows.

I installed it on Vista with no problems. Really liking it a lot. I doubt it will replace Firefox for me. But its a great alternative.. Pages seem to load faster than in Firefox.

Hmmm... Safari for windows... Why not, since there as been an IE for Mac. It looks more like an experiment rather than a serious step, but it could be interesting for webdesigners, so they can test their websites in Safari too.

It is still unstable (it crashes on My WinXP very often) but it is not surprising since it is still a beta. Also, it has big problems with Trebuchet MS (a standard windows unicode font). When this font is used in cyrillic (UTF-8), safari just doesn't show it.

Anyway I give it a 4, because I think that the porting of Safari to windows is a positive step.

coover

coover reviewed v3 Beta on Jun 11, 2007

Safari for Windows ... what a surprise.

It loaded on my Vista machine with absolutely no problems. But it looks like it will take some getting used to. It seems to take several clicks to get it to open full page, and I haven't found an easy way to actually import my bookmarks (I have more than 1000), though I have found some unacceptable "round-about" ways to get to them and use them.

And boy does it take memory. With one particular web page open, Safari consumed 63 MB of memory. Testing the same web page with other browsers, IE 7 used 43 MB, Firefox 2.0.0.4 used 33 MB, and Opera 9.21 only 26 MB. Please note that that I am not trying to say that anyone of the other browsers is better because they use less memory, but memory does seem to be a flaw.

I really haven't spent enough time with Safari to know whether or not it renders most web pages properly, but I have not yet seen any problems there.

By the way, when installing, I was given to option to allow automatic updates or not for any and all Apple software on this computer. Having had problems with other Apple Software trying to update automatically (Quick Time), I opted out. But just the fact that Apple wanted me to allow this option irritated me. I would have preferred that the option not even be offered.

I'm a huge Apple fan. I have a 24" iMac. I use Safari on that platform.

But there is no need for this program on Windows. It is not as efficient as Maxthon / IE, nor as flexible as FireFox / SeaMonkey. It does not have a bunch of skins and plug-ins like FireFox does, so what makes it any better? Nothing, as far as I can tell.

I bought a Mac because it's not a PC. I don't want my PC turning into a Mac. Jobs might as well just release OS X for all hardware platforms and finish destroying everything that made Mac hardware and the Mac platform unique.

It's fast at loading web pages, yes.
But it's another resource hog from Apple.

Opera: 60MB of RAM used for 16 tabs
Safari: 60MB of RAM used for 2 tabs

That's awful.

I hope to God that it renders exactly the same as the Mac version, otherwise it's another browser to test with as a web developer.

If it does, it has some value to me.

And yes, trying to open the 'File', 'Edit', 'View' buttons is terrifyingly slow.

@poster below: "The "browser war" just got really interesting!"

Well with all the excitement concerning WWDC 2007 Keynote, and the announcement of a Windows Version of Safari it seems that quality control did not check this beta out. Installing the beta went fine, running Safari is another matter... No text at all, images load from the default Apple site, but oddly no text in address bar nor for the "File, Edit, View, etc" pane. Clicking on the areas where you would expect File results in a blank box where options should appear. Trying to enter text into the address bar results in nothing being displayed. So technically this is more alpha than beta for me. I don't think I'll try the beta on my Mac at this moment either - kind of concerned simply by the state/experience of the Windows version.

*Update* Well to everyone that wants to claim that the issue is with a computer user with 'virus, trojan, etc' or is not updated fully - you need to hop over to the Discussion on apple's site. Computers I have tested this on result in the same issue, computers are clean and up-to-date (It's my job to keep them so). We are not the only individuals with an issue just check out and help your fellow users at Apple's Discussion site for Safari.

But there seems to be a fix for some of the missing text, you install the fonts in Safari's Safari.resources folder into Windows Fonts folder, rename Safari.resources to something else *like safari.resource* temporarily - launch Safari, it won't run of course. Now rename safari.resource back to its original name safari.resources and you will be able to see what you are missing. Just to let you know I'm using Safari 3 Beta on Windows XP right now... There are a few pages still that are missing text etc, it could be an issue with 'default font' in the Edit>Prefrences, I'll look into this a little more. And to show my support to Apple I will raise my original score from 1 to 3.
