Skype is the next phenomenon from the people who brought you KaZaA. Just like KaZaA, this uses P2P (peer-to-peer) technology to connect you to other users - not to share files this time, but to talk for free with your friends. The technology is extremely advanced - but super simple to use. You'll be making perfect quality free phone calls to your friends in no time.

Reviewing 5.8.0.156 (Feb 22, 2012)
@Uriel: First off, Skype was doing a partnership with Facebook BEFORE they were bought by Microsoft, so MS definitely doesn't have anything to do with "killing Skype". Secondly, if you believe that a thing like privacy exists in Internet age - you are very much wrong. Thirdly, the memory thing you say you "read on some web site" about (meaning you didn't experience it yourself) is NOT there, and never was, at least in my case (Win7 SP1 x64). And how ignorant does one have to be to rate something based on what one "read" (!!!) somewhere.
For me, the thing about Skype is that there is no alternative for it around. I mean, there are different programs/clients that do the very same thing Skype does, but NONE of them have the coverage that Skype has. And I simply can not ask people to install some extra software every time I need to chat or call. So, well, as much as I hate Skype and Facebook integration (and I'm not on FB ofc), I simply don't see an alternative, at least as of now.
It's easy to troll Skype. How about instead of doing that you suggest a VIABLE alternative to it?

Due to the fact that I don't use Facebook for privacy reasons and Skype's integration into it so that they together with Facebook can data mine you, I have cancelled my subscription to Skype through PayPal because of this marriage. Skype is gone. Thanks Microsoft for killing Skype.
Skype is a resource hog. For those of you who keep it running you should check it out in Task Manager. I read on some web site that there is a memory leak in Skype which causes it to keep growing and they won't fix it. But it goes over 900 000 K after just a couple of hours of idleness.

Just for the curious, I down-graded my P3 laptop that I use in cable rooms to Windows 2000 running on a solid-state flash drive. Windows 2000 light and stable for testing. Running on a solid state drive means I can carry the laptop around in environments that I would not normally subject a laptop to. I use a SATA drive in the multi-bay when I need a modern OS. I believe an old P3 is much more versatile than a netbook with a 10-inch screen and no drive bays.
i downloaded the last version of Skype 4.2 and it installs and runs fine in 2K. You can get old versions here: http://www.oldapps.com/skype.php.

Peter.S.Wilts, you clearly don't have a clue about how software is updated. The update notification within the Skype software have to rely on the version data being updated on Skype's servers. Sometimes this takes time. However, the website and other URLs ALWAYS point to the latest files, because as soon as they are updated on the servers, they are available.
5.5.0.13 isn't a beta, and you'd know this if you actually downloaded it. Next time, keep your incorrect assumptions to yourself.

Agree with HeilNizar, it's now crammed with rubbish crapware--ad bloatware that's trying to con you to pay for the extras. It's now annoying to use.
When I occasionally have to use it I use the much lighter version 3.8.0.188, this is close to or is the last version that works relatively well but still has no ads. (The nonsense started in v4.)
Also v 3.x uses closer screen spacing than v5 for the contacts listing thus has a smaller footprint on the screen. (I'm guessing--I don't use Skype on a phone--but maybe wider line spacing in v5 is because of smartphone use - maybe avatar/icon size matches better on small screen (?)).
This v5 version of Skype is a first class example of how software turns to crapware after marketing and accountants get to it.
Use v3x if you can get it.

Offline messages sounds nice, although it rather sounds as a change to the server (which now stores undelivered messages), rather than to the client. Will this also be backward compatible with Skype v4 and v3?

Reviewing 4.2.0.155 (Mar 10, 2010)
they still haven't fixed the task bar issue,
and now after installing this latest version compatibility mode isn't fixing the problem set to either vista or xp, I've had to go back to the 4.1 branch to get around it. I was so pleased to see a new version out so quickly and so disappointed to see nothing had changed.
Reviewing 4.2.0.155 (Mar 10, 2010)
The last few releases have broken features and the interface is becoming too cluttered. I still do prefer version 4 over 3 but I wish they would trim it down a bit and fix some annoying things that have been there for a while as well as stop having it do a soft close and just close
Reviewing 4.2.0.152 (Feb 26, 2010)
you can let Skype know how you feel about the new "icon on the taskbar behaviour" here http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=490071
whether they pay any attention to the overwhelming disapproval is another thing of course.
you can set the compatibility mode to Vista as well as XP to get around this annoyance.
Good program but you wonder about the programmers sometimes.

Still the best IM and voice program over the years. No peering with other networks like SIP, but simple to use, and has lots of features. Sound quality is great, up to HD. Also Skype expand to mobile networks in US & UK, become virtual calling provider for mobile phones. Skype team really works for improving own product.

Here's a fix for the taskbar problem (which also works for other annoying taskbar problems such as IM software, which is where I learned it):
Head to the Program Files folder (or Program Files (x86) if you're using 64 bit windows) and find the Skype folder. Inside it, find the "Phone" folder and open it.
Right-click the "Skype.exe" file and pick "Properties." On the "Compatibility" tab, choose to have the program run in compatibility mode as if it's using an earlier version of Windows. (I use the mode for Vista SP2 - XP's titlebar isn't translucent.) Restart the software and it leaves out all the Windows 7 "special" additions like the taskbar problem.
Skype has been getting better and better, but this taskbar thing just seems like idiocy. Luckily this fixes it until they can.

I'll agree with all the bad comments about Skype, as soon as somebody shows me an alternative that works 1) as well as Skype 2) has as many people using it as Skype does
Reviewing 4.1.0.179 (Oct 13, 2009)
I think skype has improved a lot of the years. The interface has got a LOT better and I think it's better than any other voip software (although OpenWengo was very good it seems to be in development limbo)
ON the downside, I don't like the way skype credit expires - if I give them money for phone calls, I expect that money to be in account until I use it, rather than have it being "stolen" because I haven't needed to use it that month.
The other big downside, is 21Mb. 21MB, it's a chat/voip programme, I'm not sure it needs screen sharing and if it does, that should be a pluging/optional extra. I hate the way it changes web pages - and adds it's annoying plugins to my browser.
considering that most of the time Skype is minimised, effectively doing nothing I object to it using 60mb of my ram. for doing nothing, that's way too much. especially if you're running a computer with 1gb ram (eg netbooks)
and I absolutely hate applications that "soft Close" you select close or hit the X button but they don't, they just migrate to task tray. - Skype isn't unique in this, but close/quit should be close/quit, unless I specifically tell it otherwise in preferences.
if they could sort out the bloat, and seriously reduce the idle ram usage I'd use it more, but as it is, I have it installed and try my hardest to use other voip programmes - Google Talk comes to mind - doesn't do landline calls, but does everything else I use skype for, but without the bloat.

Reviewing 4.0.0.215 (Mar 16, 2009)
Must agree with the previous poster: unless you have a very good reason, sit pat with 3.8 until Skype does its inevitable reversal and introduces a "classic" mode into 4.0 which allows it to ape 3.8's look and feel (which begs the question of why 4.0 exists in the first place, but apparently there are some improvements with the audio codec, etc).
And if you use chat a lot, forget 4.0 entirely. Gone is the helpful chat style where you had ample room to type and history was well laid out and color coded all in one space-saving package.
Reviewing 4.0.0.206 (Mar 12, 2009)
If you are using SKype 3.8 or older, dont say i didnt warn you about not getting 4.0 Skype have "new markets" in sight and dont really care about anything else it seems. many functions and features removed. This version is a major backward step if you have been using 3.8. Although i suspect a small amount of (old skype) users who are simple in their needs who dont care much for refined functionality / features that make computer use more efficient, may actually like the it.
Voice was not an improvement for me.
II use video rarely. According to Skyp's CEO, thats what Skype are chasing.
I use voice and chat.
Functionality and use of space are appallingly lacking in comparison to the previous version. Horrible design, and generally not catering to practical computer savvy users. Just my view. May be different for someone else
The issue here is not about change per se, but one of degradation to such a poor GUI and user experience. I gave it a chance for a week, and it took a while to discover just how bad it really is.
Chat is horrible to use. hard to read and distinguish between who wrote what. tires the eyes, hard to use, and extra work. i dont have room to write all of whats missing in chat, and how poor it has become. I will just save you the trouble to say believe me, it is really bad for anything beyond simple short text messages. If you are fast on the keybaord and chat (which i require for the technical work i do), then use something else that is useable. I suspect skype have purposely degraded Chat to such an extreme, so as that they dont have to spend resources in the upgrades. Thats what happens when companies are run by bean counters i guess.

Reviewing 4.0.0.206 (Feb 3, 2009)
Avoid this particular build, .206. It has a pretty buggy UI. The previous beta worked quite well though. I like Skype and get a lot of use out of it. I am American living for a year in Munich and it's a great way to keep in touch with people back home. They call me on a local number and I get it on Skype or my German mobile phone. With the parents and girlfriend I can talk for free on Skype as much as I want. Good video quality too even over a UMTS data card, surprisingly. I disagree with some of the UI decisions they have made but overall it's a good program and service.

The ringer that you hear as you are calling someone, is ear splitting and causes everyone a headache, yet you can't change it. You can change most of the sounds, but not the worst one. Skype has gone way down in the past 4 years.

So much for being the next phenomenon :)
It's just another chat program that has nothing that really separates it for any other chat program. It badly coded, has a ton of annoyances and is spammer friendly. But each their own.
As for james and daisy nobody likes spammer scum bags so go away. The little that does with scum but hey worth a try lol
Reviewing 4.0.0.181 Beta (Jan 8, 2009)
First off I can see that they are sticking with their vision regardless of what the user base wants or desires. Some polish is finally showing up in the application.
Having said all that, this is still a terrible design. Your choices are one large window or if you go to the "Compact" view you get large pop-up windows. I am not sure how this is compact in any way. Its large and obtrusive on ones desktop.
In the compact view mode:
Why would the developers want windows for sending IM or SMS as large as the contact list? Yes you can resize this but that means resizing for each and every person you IM or call through skype. For some people this is going to be very time intensive.
Why in the world would we want very large icon's? Why is there so much wasted space? Why can't we have a small unobtrusive window. Do the country flags for people need to be so damn large? Do I need a search Directory on the IM window itself? Again you can minimize this, if you can find the button, its hidden. So why be obtrusive when its clear on these forums everyone is against it?
Final conclusion is that we the end user must spend an enourmous amount of time undoing all these "features" so that Skype is small and unobtrusive.
I am a paying skype user. I feel this product is moving in the wrong direction. I have stoped recomending this product to friends and family for any purpose.

Reviewing 4.0.0.169 Beta (Oct 31, 2008)
Ack!
As pointed out before, pop-up windows for the visually impaired. This is a horrible design to say the least. The pop-up windows for Dialing, Shopping and Directory are over 2 times the size of the small Skype window. If you keep your Skype to the right of your screen like me these cover your main Skype window. Again horrible implementation, who in their right mind wants these overly large windows on top of their main window, who in their right mind wants the windows to begin with? I am not blind nor do I want my desktop covered with these pop-ups interfering with the other work I have going on.
Each of these pop ups are an individual window which if you click through them requires the user to close each window individually. If you make a call, it leaves this giant window open on your desktop (So I am not sure how these other folks can give it a 5 and say the small windows are back.). If you close the window there is no apparent way to kill the call on the main Skype window you must right click to end the call on the contact.
In essence the compact view is where they have removed the large screen to the right of the main window, nothing else has changed, the overly large window has been replaced with pop-ups appearing in the same place (I run in 1680 x 1050).
The old design where these were in tabs is a much smarter and more enjoyable experience. Because it allows the user to have some control over the Skype windows size.
The icons for online users and users in your contact list are too close in color and design, it’s all a wash in the contact list.
Minus the folks who don't seem to understand a thing about user interfaces, everyone seems to be in agreement that this implementation is a poor design and the majority of folks are very unhappy with changes. For what ever reason Skype has not really stopped to take a hard look at what their users are saying and make changes accordingly.
This is still a piss poor effort and an even worse response to the myriad of complaints about version 4.

Reviewing 4.0.0.155 Beta (Jul 30, 2008)
The Skype developers are headed in the wrong direction with their new interface and "feature" set. I've used Skype for six years and have never been so disappointed with a beta or interface. Keyboard support is broken, the main window won't size properly, and the chat window is too busy and clunky. As a side benefit, calls seem to drop more often, and voice quality is choppy. I'm uninstalling it, and they'll have to work to convince me that they understand what users want from a new Skype. This isn't the program I know and love anymore.
Reviewing 4.0.0.155 Beta (Jul 30, 2008)
it's interesting to go to the Skype forums and see the amount of posts by people posting there for the first time to complain about the new interface. There's no need to complain as these days there are a number of alternatives, just do a google search for skype alternatives. Don't just sit around and cry about it all, do something about it and move to a new program, it's not that hard really.

Reviewing 4.0.0.150 Beta (Jul 13, 2008)
Possibly the worst and/or ugliest software interface out there now, certainly the worst of all VOiP clients. Were the people at Skype on drugs when they thought to develop and release this pile of manure?
I'm going back to a version which doesn't assault my every sensibility. In fact, merely this new interface will have me rethink paying for Skype at all. This is definitely an early sign of a firm destined not to consider its users' opinions.
Reviewing 4.0.0.150 Beta (Jul 10, 2008)
I completely agree wz VictorAnderson, Daddy_Spank, stisev and Dreimanis: Plz Skype staff revert the 4.x interface to the 3.x one.
The present one is something "undefined", complicated, not user-friendly.
I usually prefere the last released software even if just an Alpha release, but after installing and using for some weeks the new Skype (on Vista) I reverted to the last official release: is surely better.
I also won't update Skype until any new n future releases have the 3.x interface, intuitive, inmediate, easy of use, user-friendly. Come on Skype!! I love you but this has to be turned around!!!
Reviewing 4.0.0.150 Beta (Jul 10, 2008)
Interface in 4.0 is awful. I like the 3.x one better.
I notice someone here mentioned ooVoo. I've used it since its conception - if you haven't tried it yet I suggest you do.
In the meantime, if you have skype 3.x, I'd stick with it. I installed this 4.0 and tried it for a few days - the giant bulky interface concept they've gone with in place of the nice tight, messenger style window is a mistake if you ask me.
I will say this however - the code behind the beta is pretty solid - only had it crash on me once and I was really screwing around testing it hard to get it to do so.
Reviewing 4.0.0.150 Beta (Jul 10, 2008)
Why on earth would they turn something thats completely useful and proved to be working great for the past 5 years, into this rubbish. I REALLY hope they revert back to original layout and start focusing on real issues such as CPU useage, RAM useage and call/video quality etc etc... Come on Skype!! I love you but this has to be turned around!!!

The GUI sucks...
Oovoo is really starting to steal Skype's fire.
Reviewing 4.0.0.150 Beta (Jul 9, 2008)
For those not comfortable with Skype's GUI, and I'm one of them, why not try ooVoo (www.ooVoo.com)? It is very attractive and it allows three-way video link-ups (or up to six in the paid for version)
Reviewing 4.0.0.150 Beta (Jul 9, 2008)
I see advantages to both interfaces, so I'm looking forward to the release that permits both. I love WinAMP's flexibility, and love that Skype is looking into new interfaces to appeal to all types of users.

the new UI looks like it was designed by 12 year olds for 10 year olds. Back to version 3 for me and just about everybody else on my contact list, bad move designers.
I mean really, here we have an opportunity to fix the RAM problems, improve video and audio, and what do we do put out a UI that nobody wants or likes.
Reviewing 4.0.0.145 Beta (Jun 26, 2008)
I REALLY do not like the new interface as well and I hope that Skype listens to all the complains about it. Improve memory useage, call and video quality, make it possible to send folders... etc etc before messing around with the skype layout that people has gotten used to.

Its working fine for what i use it for (only few video calls to friend from time to time).
I like the new UI and the guided install mode is working well.
The only problem with it's RAM eating !!
48Mo when idle after launch. And near 100Mo after choosing a video in the mood panel !!(metacafe video)
Also some minor english only (untranslated) menus.
Hope the ram point will be taken care of in the next releases

Reviewing 3.6.0.127 Beta (Oct 11, 2007)
Had begun to really love Skype, but then came The Great Skype Outage of 2007. Since then, I and a few of my friends have noticed that Skype now sometimes loses written chat messages, or if you'll lucky they'll just show up 2-3 days late.
Skype tech support states this client version should resolve that, but it's the third time they've said it after three new releases now. I'm beginning to get the feeling of incompetence becoming the norm at Skype.
In fact, just downloaded Windows Messenger for the first time in years. I need something which works and I can trust. Skype apparently no longer fits those simple requirements.
Reviewing 3.6.0.127 Beta (Oct 11, 2007)
Good software. Does what it promises and is quite attractive too.
Only gripe is that its beginning to bloat a bit.

Skype itself works pretty good, but Skype Live is a pain. If there is there anyway to remove this feature completely I'd like to know. I don't think I'll ever want to talk to perverts in Eastern Europe , nor do I want them or anyone else annoying me about anything in the middle of a call.

Skype may (or may not) be a good tool for voice.
Their security sucks rocks though.

Nope, It's too much like an instant messenger. Have to have the computer on. I like my Vonage better & no need to have the computer even turned on to use it. Plus I get FREE calling to international numbers. I'd rather pay for a service & have it work. Nothing to download and upgrade ever.

helpful tips when using skype:
(1) leave skype off when your not using it, its p2p so it uses your connection to transfer other peoples data, (video conferencing etc.)
(2) dont run this while playing games, it uses alot of resources and makes a noticeable difference when you turn it on or off, while playing games and talking to someone. (i run skype on a seperate machine just for this reason.)
(3) close the live tab, its uses alot of resources.
(4) always get the latest version.
do these four things and skype works well. cya.
Reviewing 3.2.0.145 (May 9, 2007)
I rate it 4/5, however, the overall rate of the program ought to be 1/5. Skype is a classic example of bloatware.
So why I rate it so high? Well, Skype 3.2 introduces a brand new voice codec known as SVOPC. It is proprietary solution but it beats everything what I have tested to date. I do not know what the Estonia development team did, but it can be called pure magic.

1. Don't like how install options are layed out / very easy to miss(Lower left corner).
2. Safe mode install generated its own error code: 1601, and over-install of previous version also failed.
3. Success at last!!! Manually uninstall first, then current release wil install properly (uninstall shortcut may be missing, go into Control Panel to remove program in such case).

The reading of BIOS information was introduced with the inclusion of the extras manager in version 3, has however been a non-issue since version 3.0.0.216.
/lalf

"The Extras Manager, which can be reached under Actions –> Extras –> Manage extras, was introduced in Skype–3 for Windows. It offers access to a number of partly non-free add-ons, for collaboration, data transfer, and games between callers. Since the EasyBits component produced errors on the 64-bit Windows, Sauer says the new version 3.0.0.216 of Skype has been modified so it _no longer_ reads out BIOS data."

Thank you very much santuccie!!!
Giving this a 5 due to obvious extensive effort and as well success in fixing considerable number of bugs AND very importantly: inexpensive offering(to repeat ad nauseam; we need to be able to use 1/2 - 1/4 rating increments!!!).
Although i do share zridling's recent concerns... maybe that's the price to pay for a work in progress AND the added extras(whether they're necessary or not is debatable / up to individual opinion...only time, competition, eventual consumer acceptance will be the final arbiter...)... maybe Lite/Basic/Original alongside a Pro version is the answer...

Well, the UI is a bit HUGE, if you ask me, but other than that, nice app.
Reviewing 3.0.0.198 (Dec 27, 2006)
This response is for horsecharles. There exists a little package that allows you to run Skype from your flashdrive. I've been using it for several months now.
Note: This was created by a third party, not by the makers of Skype. It is distributed without the application itself to avoid EULA violation.
You must install it to a local drive, copy the .exe to the portable folder, then uninstall. You now have a fully portable copy of Skype!
Click the following link, then click on "PortableSkype.zip - Mirror #2" to download the package: http://portableapps.com/node/751
I give this a 4, because you can avoid the annual PC-Phone/Phone-PC fees by combining AIM Phoneline and AdCalls. Otherwise, a long-lived success.
Reviewing 3.0.0.198 (Dec 21, 2006)
Love Skype, but hate what they've done with the UI. Even though you set tabs to retain their text, it shrinks to an unrecognizable icon. Also, this thing is bloating out of control fast. Soon, let's hope someone builds a lean, mean alternative that goes back to what Skype used to be. I bought the $15 xmas offer for '07, but I guess $30/year is still great, considering the taxes the repubs slam you with on your cell.

I really don't like it. the interface is too.. "white", the space is cluttered, everything feels sluggish, when i'm sending file, after completion, the window does not close automatically, added 10 mb of unneeded bloat. god, i just hate this version.
note : it's ok if you like it, it's just my taste, so don't rape me ;)

ZR is right....have you been shacking up in some cave with Osama that you don't know that yet L?
Although if you sign up by Jan31 the price is cut in half.
I think it's a great deal...purchase a real number for $36 yearly and you're all set for an entire year of unlimited in/out NA calls(plus 1 hour international) for $50.
The future is this on a usb stick and/or combo cell-wifi phone...add a cell to pots adapter...rig the settings and/or combine with asterisk while on the lowest-priced cell plan and you will have unlimited in/out minutes both at home and on the road for a very low price.

Skype step by step is becoming definition of bloatware, recently I removed it from autostart because it takes too much resources. Polish "Tlen" has the same features, yet it takes only 1.5mb.

do u make a difference between essential features and useless s*** which creates excessive bloat..

Giving this a five for reasons that this isn't bloatware (there are things that go with programs that are essential for it to run, any layman would know that).

Skype 3.0 for Windows beta update
This one contains important fixes to last week’s beta and we recommend everyone running last week’s beta to upgrade to the new one.
UPDATE: this was available for a while today but we had to pull it since we got reports of some potentially pretty disastrous bugs. If you managed to download the update and it works for you, no need to worry, but for others, we’ll post another beta update when we have more info on this.

I really like skype but there is one thing that really bugs the hell at of me. And no matter how many times I ask for it to be added skypoe is not doing it.
I would like an option for the skype interface not to open on my desktop whne a call comes in. I can not tell you homw many times I was playing a game and I get a skype call and it kills my game.
Instead when a skype call comes in they could have the skype icon in the system tray change color or something like that. And maybe even have a little balloon tip popup. That would be much better.
But it looks like Skype does not want to do this. It should at least be an option for users!!!

Reviewing 2.6.0.74 Beta (Sep 8, 2006)
Skype DOES use your bandwidth to assist in connecting random Skype users when BOTH PARTIES are behind firewalls/NAT (thus cannot make a direct IP to IP connection). Personally, these days I mostly use WL Messenger or the commercial-grade softphone eyeBeam when connecting to VoIP hardware on the other side. I use Skype rarely - when it makes some Skype user happy mostly... Obviously most people aren't as VoIP savvy as myself so Skype is a wonderful solution, even though it's proprietary. Also, the available Skype hardware (3rd party) is superb and quite affordable.

I used to look at Skype and think, what's the point? Then, I finally downloaded it and give it a shot. I have to say I'm very impressed and pleasantly surprised. Its very easy to use, the UI is appealing and friendly. I tested it by calling my cell and leaving a voicemail, the recording sounded loud and clear. I'm thinking of buying a number from Skype and using it to call my friends, family, etc. when I'm at my computer. Overall, a 5 definitely. Looking forward to future releases.

Skype is good for a reason. They cater to Windows Mostly which is my Unfortunate Stance in the Computing world but it gives me a certain advantage, Free SkypeOut for this year. I still need a SkypeIn number but I eventually plan to replace the Landline in my House. Skype may be my best Alternative. Not a bad IM client either with a damn good community. I just don't like it when random people add me in there. I'm never on SkypeMe so they probably look me up. -_- However I may look for something a little more Privacy Friendly if it persists.

Reviewing 2.5.0.122 (Jul 9, 2006)
I have tried Skype for the last couple of months and really like the quality and the fact that it is a free program with minimal charges for special services. I started with the most recent beta version and now use the lastest upgraded version. The beta had some minor problems, the new release is very good with no problems experienced so far. I have used it for the VOIP calling to phones only, I have recently added SkypeIn with the voice mail and call forwarding(beta). I like the clarity much better on Skype than my cell phone when using at home, the price is exceptionally better. I rated it a 4 instead of a 5 due to not having tested entire program services yet.
Reviewing 2.5.0.122 (Jun 28, 2006)
The program is decent and provides good voice quality. However, it is hardly innovative, cumbersome to use (e.g. headsets/requires computer) and I think it is a fad that will eventually fade into obscurity. Netmeeting and CuSeeMe did this first, and then voice chat was eventually implemented into IM clients. VOIP and cell providers already offer free domestic long distance. VOIP providers often include Puerto Rico and Canada, as well as ubercheap international rates. Why bother with Skype?
I could see the utility in Skype if it matures into a true standalone VOIP product (e.g. VONAGE, Packet8, Comcast), and the software takes a back seat as a softphone.

The program is very easy to use, there is no complicated setup, and the interface is very well done - though i would like an option to hide the big call/hang up buttons.
My chief complaint is the program uses around 20mb of ram while running, which is above average for this type of software. And there is also the negative fact that Skype can utilize your idle bandwidth. I dislike the folders it creates in MY Documents so I use the Portable Skype launcher to keep everything in one folder that i can take on my usb drive.
It's much more functional than Gizmo and WengoPhone for now...

I'm a big Skype fan and promoter, I think this software is great. However those reviewers who have made comments about system performance share my experience... Skype is a memory hog for those of us still under 1GB. Also there are sound quality issues related to firewall and "relayed transfer" that affect its usefulness among mere newbies, but that isn't strictly Skype's fault. It works out of the box, just not as well as it could if you know what you're doing with firewalls.
All in all, I still recommend.

I used skype since version 0.70 and it is improving every version. The new webcam plugin works far more stable then msn messenger does and I had with my home xp no frozen images, but it will not do a good image job under 512Mb. Cpu is high and it takes a lott of bandwith. The P.I.P function with fullscreen works well, but the picture of my own webcam is too little, it should be 9 times bigger or resible. It is frustrating that after format of my pc all my contacts are gone, it doesn't keep it on a server in-store like msn messenger does but in the registry. Sadly though, I may have finally run into a OS dead-end here. My Logitech webcam is detected by Skype, but doesn't display an image. Same camera works fine in other apps like, say Netmeeting, etc.

Junk!
What's up with the amount of connections from Skype?
If I do a netstat command from a CMD Prompt I end up getting people from out of state that I'm not even talking to connected to me. This is only if I leave it open for a few hours.
It's like my computer becomes a "supernode" when I run Skype.

Ok i have to defend Skype services, because i and my friend had to do refunding, because of sometimes weird billing for more seconds then we talked, and you know what ? They did it very fast, we just attached screenshot with skype call history, and website billing... So i don't know what you're talking about ?!?
PS. I don't care about Skype being bought by eBay, because calls are encrypted anyway, and i don't mind if they know with who i'm talking - they knew it already before....

As a free product and service, Skype may be excellent. However, once I became a paying customer I found Skype to be a nightmare. Many of Skype's administrative systems simply fail. It's customer service is abysmal. After paying for service several days ago, I still have no funds showing when I log in to my client. After submitting trouble tickets 2-3 times, I not once received even an automated reply, so one can certainly forget contacting a human being. Skype may well be just fine as a free product, but should be put out of business as a fee-based product/service. And, I'm still awaiting the refund that I was told would be immediately forthcoming should I not like the service. Well, there hasn't been *any* service since I paid for Skype's enhanced services! The only communications I've received from Skype has been verification of charges to my credit card, and the belated provision of sign-up bonuses (which should have appeared with my sign-up). No explanation of why the bonuses were not immediately applied was offered. There was no apology for my having to scream to get them. Caveat emptor. (FileForum should consider adding negative ratings. A one-rating is being far too generous in this case.)
Reviewing 1.4.0.51 Beta (Sep 7, 2005)
Great product. Unfortunately, I now stick to yahoo and google talk (more users, same level of quality). Skype also (thus the -1) does ALOT and I mean ALOT of communication in the background. I don't know what it's doing so I can't tell you what the reason behind it is. I can tell you however that it uses more idle bandwidth than all my IM programs combined - and I'm not one for 'lite', so I have yahoo msger, msn msger and aim running. Skype outdoes ALL of them while completely idle. It's too busy for my liking and though I have 6mb cable, an application which is constantly communicating with a variety of IPs behind my back is not for me. And, no, I'm not one of those paranoid people either, it's just the principle of it. Nothing's in their faqs about it. Because of that, I no longer leave it running....so it's now rarely used. And what's with these weekly, bi-weekly, tri-weekly updates? I know it's beta - I can well appreciate that, but I think 1 or 2 a month would be great.
Reviewing 1.4.0.51 Beta (Sep 6, 2005)
I like the "newer" interface. With Gizmo, Skype, Yahoo! Messenger (yes its pretty good) and others... its hard to find one with all of the features you want. It would be great as always to have them all get together and combine.
Overall, skype is fantastic and they do great work. As far as spyware and adware and such... Skype is like one of the big ones that is totally known for NOT having spyware or anything. Like they are one of the big time leaders against spyware and such. So no worries there.

I bought 10€ credit via Visa through the website and in 2 hours she was able to call not only me over Internet (which is free), but also her parents to her home number.
She talked for 2 hours at about 1,50 €. Please note 3 mins of time via mobile *odafone charged 17€ (mobile-to-mobile). If you need to speak especially between different countries I think it worth it. Give 5.

Skype is nice and therefore I give it a high rating but nonetheless I have 2 major problems with it:
- resource hog - allocates nearly 80% of the CPU time on my 3-year-old 1GHz laptop. No problem on my desktops (10%-20%) but sometimes I just need to use it on the laptop and it becomes barely responsive. Not really a problem with laptop config, Skype customer support was not able to resolve the issue. I guess it is just the way it works, it is a bit "heavy-weight".
- no way of controlling the way it connects to the Internet - I fully understand it was meant to be a feature (to allow users behind NAT and/or in networks with restrictive outbound policy to use it) but in my case I would like to configure Quality-of-Service on my Internet connection router to ensure a low-latency, high-priority conncetion for Skype. Skype does not allow for a fine-grained configuration, though.
Do you know any VoIP software that would:
- be "light-weight" - not ICQ or AIM or other full-blown IM - I only needVoIP and not anything else,
- configurable (does not have to be user-friendly, I am a power-user),
- reliable (in terms of stablility - I do not need NAT traversal),
- security (encryption) would be nice but is not a requirement (and not a priority either)?
Some time ago there was BuddyPhone, but after being taken over by Nikotel (IIRC) it is not really usable.
Thank you for your suggestions!
P.S. I just see that the latest version of Skype FINALLY allows for SOME connection configuration - still not really what I am looking for.

Impressive sound quality and very useful for calling around the world. I didn't give it a 5/5 only because of occasional connection problems and slow file transfers. In some cases I've had as much as a 30 second delay between speaking and the other party hearing what was spoken. A reconnect usually rectifies this problem.
Overall a great product, but needs some work. When it functions properly, WOW.. Much better than any telephone in terms of voice quality. The conference calling feature is awesome! I've successfully spoken with 5 family members, two of which were on 56k modems with excellent results.
Highly recommended in spite of a few small problems.
Reviewing 1.2.0.41 (Apr 13, 2005)
This version is better. Now it's down to the usual things about so many applications that drive me nuts: "Close" buttons that can't be configured to exit the application, but rather only hide the main window and leave the application running as a try icon; inordinately-high context switch deltas and CPU usage, and so on...
Reviewing 1.2.0.37 (Apr 5, 2005)
The first time I opened the options dialog, it devourced 90-100% of my CPU, for no apparent reason. After several minutes of that nonsense, it finally relented, and--gee thanks, Skype--I had my system back.
But then, any time I tried calling a contact, I got a "critical error". And I lost track of how many times it simply crashed on me.
Once the dust settled, I found that calls sounded very good (much better than with Firefly). I had to max out my volume, but that may be due to a hardware issue. But, I have so far only tested it on my local LAN, so...
Reviewing 1.2.0.37 (Mar 23, 2005)
I haven't had a chance to test out the new version, however older versions of Skype offer the best voice quality I have seen, with one exception. Over long conversations the volume of the conversation slowly decreases, and I have to reconnect in order to keep the conversation at an audible level.
As well, when playing games it tends to slow down and get staticy.

Hi,
Skype is cool and work great.
Some things are wrong, but the mistakes are so small, that I can give Skype 5 points.
First, Skype has at the moment no centralized contact list, like ICQ or MSN Messenger..
Second, Skype is incompatible with Eset's NOD32 AntiVirus (www.nod32.com)
Third, Skype has no webcam/video call support, like MSN Messenger, Yahoo or Netmeeting.
But I think, these features/fixes will come in the near future and yes, Skype is new and the basic functions are free, so the development of Skype have enough time to integrade more features (for free, I hope so..) and fixes some mistakes..
If Skype reaches Version 2.x and is still free/freeware and only things like calling ordinary phones costs a little bit and the bugs/requests I wrote at top are integrated and work great, Skype will be the best and most used Phone (inetphone)/IM in the world.. ^^
thx and best regards,

I had a conversation with a person from a different continent as me, yet Skype worked perfectly!
For those of you suffering from bad audio quality, lag, distortion, etc, it is most likely because you are somehow firewalled. Take these steps:
1. Are you using software firewall (Zonealarm, NIS, etc.)? Find out how to give Skype full access.
2. Are you using hardware firewall (eg. router)?
Find out how to do "port forwarding" or "virtual server" and open the relevant ports. Allow TCP and UDP traffic to pass through.
3. Do not place your microphone near the speakers! Common sense will tell you this will generate echo! Imagine this: You speak on your microphone, the other party's speakers play your voice and his/her microphone captures the voice from the speakers, your own voice then comes back to you.

Can someone at BETANEWS remove those they are skewing the ratings with trash....(ok maybey mine is too so I'll give some review here) Skpye has constantly gotten better and is gaining commercial support VoIP is growing mature the makers of NERO ahead have similar called SIPPS. Betas have always small things that don't work or problems but I have not found any Major problems in Skype. For Free IP-IP telephony with on the fly encryption for voice and data (chat) packets the price is incredible. Now they are even supporting VoIP calls to and from PCs and Pocket PC 2003. They need to work on transfering buddy lists or perhaps calls but they are doing a great job IMHO. They voice Quality is excellent even on my Pocket PC (guess what WoW only a 400 MHZ xscale with 64megs ram) the PC version reccomends 2000 or XP and if you aren't running a bettter processor than 400mhz and 64 megs ram perhaps you really should not be running 2000/XP. The interface is easy to navigate for multiple ages and I have seen a 3 year old and a 87 year old know how to start the call and talk. Plus the value added functions as placing a party on hold (can make additional calls while on hold) and conference calling makes this a excellent program)
I again ask the mods to remove the plain ignorant remarks and even feel free to edit out my request (but not the review)
If you are worried so much about security fine don't run P2P file sharing apps but otherwise your safest bet is to turn off your pc unplug it from the wall and destroy it with a sledge hammer. Every Web based APP or TCP/IP app is going to have some ports open on your pc otherwise it wouldn't work and that includes random high ports. So unless someone here is qualified enough to analyze every packet that every app transmits (and if we trust you which i may or may not) then feel free to list every apps security vulnerabilities as you feel fit. THIS IS NOT P2P File sharing

The program is very well. I use it very often and I have to write that the quality of speech is superior! Nothing compares to Skype in this matter. Unfortunately, there are some issues:
1. some Chinese providers are forced to block it, for political reasons. I have friends in China and I have to use Yahoo! IM sometimes. As far as I know, it must depend on local governments - I have friends in different places and it varies from place to place, but I want you know it. It reminds me another program named Speak Freely, there is a special clone named Spook Freely, without encryption, for the country (only???).
2. I do not why but Skype does not want to work with Steganos Internet Anonym Pro (http://www.steganos.com/...SIAPRO6&language=en). I do not mean that they do not want to work together only. They do not even want to coexist in any measure - if you install them (not use!!) both and surf the net the use of the processor is 100%. I reported the bug 3 months ago but received no answer from Steganos and Skype.
3. pity that there is only Windows and PocketPC 2003 (or whatever the name of the PDA OS from Ms is) version, and no version for different OSes like Linux or PalmOS
I rate it 5 stars anyway.

ok first of all skype has no spyware whatsoever thats bull..it also has great sound quality and believe me..its better than talkin on the phone the only hard part about it is to get all your friends to download it cause they either don't have a mic or they just think its g** so yea and the only program thats as cool as skype is eyeball if you have a webcam alright peace out
Reviewing 0.97.0.6 Beta (Feb 27, 2004)
Great program, I've just ordered an USB headset because of it. If they can fix the issues with corporate filewalls it would be even better. They say that they're working on this and that's just fine because it's still a beta. I have no big privacy concerns because calls are encrypted with AES and that's a lot better than normal phonecalls which can very easily be monitored.
Reviewing 0.97.0.3 Beta (Feb 24, 2004)
Using this app shows you the future of internet phone service. Yes it is by the hands of the creators of Kazaa wich only show how succesfull they are at creating software people want to use. Even if its used with bad intentions. I for one, don't believe they will turn skype bad. That would be like slaughtering the hen with the golden eggs.
Verdict for the software AS IS: 5/5

Well it does what it says and all...but someone wanna tell me what the big deal is? Ok so you got voice (no video?) chat...so does a zillion other things...camfrog, eyeballchat, msn, yahoo, aim...blah blah blah..the list goes on forever - so what's so special about this one other than the fact it lacks video?
Reviewing 0.97.0.3 Beta (Feb 23, 2004)
well dude check ur self , cuz I ran Ad Aware after installing this , and SpyBot Search & Destroy and found only your paranoia
Reviewing 0.97.0.1 Beta (Feb 23, 2004)
Have tried this since .96 ver - no problems during install nor when using it. Very pleased with the ease of use - even more please with the quality of sound - as good as a "decent" phone if not better. As another person I know said who's beta testing this, "It'll sure to put the Telcos outta business!"
Reviewing 0.97.0.1 Beta (Feb 22, 2004)
This an awesome Program, the sound quality both send and receive are unbelievable. If this is the beginning of Voip, I can't wait to see where it leads. Good Job on this one.

This program just keeps getting better and better. I tried the audio conferencing feature and I was talking to 2 people in different countries. This works very well! Just make sure everyone has broadband!

Excellent software. Buggy? I haven’t found the bugs yet… other then when I close Skype it used to like to switch off my “Line In” which messed with my TV card, but that was fixed a couple betas ago.
Now as for quality, I have been using Skype since the day it went up. Calls from Oregon to Israel are clean and clear, to Great Brittan, and across state. The one thing that I have seen is that …those with the worst quality are using really crappy Microphones or are on less then broadband connection. As for drops? I haven’t been yet, except once, but that was due to Comcast fizzling out LOL
Overall the program does what it says, does it nicely and is really really worth the price of FREE. Some of you are adding links to other software, and that’s neat, but none of them run on a p2p setup.
Reviewing 0.96.0.3 Beta (Jan 27, 2004)
Quite a high quality app. Sure, it sucks if you're trying to talk over a 48 kbps dial-up connection, but that just not what it was intended for.
Reviewing 0.95.0.36 Beta (Dec 27, 2003)
I don't know why some people are saying this program is bad. It is the best audio chat program I have ever used. I talk with my friend in the UK (I am in USA) and the sound quality is superior to what AIM, Yahoo, or MSN can offer. Definately try this out to voice chat with your friends.
Reviewing 0.95.0.36 Beta (Dec 27, 2003)
Not too great. Not even slight great, to be honest. The sound quality isn't that great and it drops out like mad. Conversation drops out so much that it makes it barely usable. Ventrilo with the high quality codec enabled is definitely a lot better - very high quality and never drops out.
Reviewing 0.95.0.36 Beta (Dec 27, 2003)
Hmm, I personally don't understand the hype surrounding this piece of software. I've tried it on lines down from64/64kbit, and up to 100mbit on my lan. I think it's too buggy, has clicks and dropouts in conversations, and the sound quality is worse than what msn deliver. I'm still to be dazzled.
Reviewing 0.95.0.25 Beta (Dec 11, 2003)
A very good program, but I still prefer the solution from http://www.telio.no/ instead... ;)

Peer to Peer is direct computer to computer whereas msn yahoo use a server so by using direct peer to peer its faster clearer connection so result is clearer voice.
Reviewing 0.95 Beta (Nov 21, 2003)
Um..that file isn't even from Skype. Your computer is just infected. I have Skype instaleld and it works great. The sound quality is superior to MSN and AIM's voice chat. Also, I don't have that file on my computer, thus further proving my point.

I just installed this program and after running Ad-aware and Spybot I didn't find any spyware or adware. Pretty good program and no errors during installation.
Reviewing 0.92 Beta (Sep 19, 2003)
BigWillie I don't know what you read or where you read it but Skype has no spyware or adware at all (right now anyways)
The program itself is damn good, the voice quality is superior to most VoIP apps, I'd say it rivals e4 Chat and Ventrilo very nicely.

Skype is great and is SPYWARE FREE. I even did a scan with adaware and spybot to make sure and there is no spyware installed at all.
One great thing about skype is the ability to connect router to router. I am behind a router and so is my friend and we had been unable to connect via Netmeeting or any of the IM clients out there.

Reading info found on Google, it appears that Skype is indeed a carrier of spyware. No such thing as a free lunch! Maybe wait until SkypeLite comes out, as I don't allow spyware or scumware anywhere near my P.C
Good idea gone a little sour!

This is not scumware and I can in good concience recommend it to everyone. Yes, it is P2P which means that the person who is calling you must "ACCESS YOUR COMPUTER" (e.g. skype) so there is no way the eula can look any different...
But the P2P is what makes it great. Fantastic sound quality and ease of use, and I dont have to pay long distance anymore..
My only concern is that if there is no server it cant be monitored which means that they might get the governments chasing them instead of RIAA this time..

Looks like scumware to me. I could not, in good conscience, recommend this program to anyone.

The Idea these people have developed.....which yes MSN 6.0 has already implemented....is a great one....its much easier to find new buddys on Skype to talk to than on MSN in my opinion......however skype still has several bugs and still needs several improvements....some comments i sent to the Skype developement team included they needed to make a way to erease your previous conversations with people as well as have a way to show which users in the search feild are online and offline or whether they are in call bugs included a minor problem with the first user search and when an inital text message is sent to a user whose list your not on if the other party hits the add user button the user isn't added to the list only way to do this is through the find feild and ask for authorization

Okay, not a review since I didn't download this. But I got suspicious about the source and found this in the EULA:

Doesn't MSN Messenger 6.0 do this already with their built in audio and video?
Maybe some people will ask: what is HD video and why it can be widely used?
Answer:
High-definition video or HD video refers to any video system of higher resolution than standard-definition (SD) video, and most commonly involves display resolutions of 1280×720 pixels (720p) or 1920×1080 pixels (1080i/1080p).
Nowdays, HD is becoming more and more popular as the following reasons:
1.HD DVDS, together with equipment to play and record them, are available now, stimulating the public appetite for HD.
2.PC displays with HD quality potential are becoming widely used, which will acclimatise the public to HD.
3.Large flat LCD screen with HD resolution are becoming readily available at prices which the public seems prepares to pay, providing the means to view HD.
While, HD video also has some inconvenience to use, such as, we can’t edit them
in Windows Movie Maker or some other edit software; can’t put them into portable devices directly , like iPod, iPhone, Zune, Creative Zen and so on; can’t share videos with friends on youtube, myspace and other online video website. etc.
Here, I’ll introduce a wonferful tool to solve this problem.
Aiseesoft HD Converter has three uses:

Convert general video to HD video;
