I stopped using this program, had tons of issues and the updating takes forever usually a bit-torrent style update which is just toooooooo slow for so few of users. Also adding Crawler which you can't get rid of once you install this program... It's to intrusive and takes over your search engine and you just cant get rid of it... So much for Spyware when you get a Malware hostile take over in your browser homepage and search engine choice...

I'm using an older version, which I like, but I'm afraid to update because newer programs tend to be bloated and interfere with smooth uninterrupted system performance, and obscuring my screen with advertisements or soliciting. Would be nice if it only updated needed portions similar to good AV programs. Have also used one of their other products called System Protect and liked it but don't really need it.

Hi

I m searching a realtime protection for free but clam dont support it.
I was excited when i see that i can have it with Spyware Terminator .

From Last 2 years i m using it.
all Virus are cleared, when i put any infected usb it clears it.
it can provide good modes like install , game ,deny modes.
u can switch modes easily.
I can run it in my laptop without any slow performance.

ClamAV Virus Databases:
main.cvd ver. 53 released on 14 Nov 2010 09:58 :0500 (sig count: 846214)

however automatic update process is resource hog , i manually update daily.

We even use it on our friends cyber cafe & its the only cyber cafe where u dont get any virus in ur usb/system.

Spyware terminator which actually INSTALL spyware by default (crawler toolbar)... Need to say more? I do not think so.
Even if you can avoid it using advanced setup options, the program should help to AVOID spyware: Zero credibility.

I think this is the best free, stand-alone AS program out there. You can set it loose or tight as you wish. I like it a little loose, so I won't get dozens of alerts. Be deliberate while installing it, because it has an option to install the Crawler Toolbar, which in my opinion is unnecessary. Otherwise, it's a great real time AS scanner, fast and unobtrusive. It's best used with a stand alone AV scanner and firewall. I wish Crawler would come up with a complete secuirty suite like the Comodo Internet Security Suite, which is also free.

bellgamin reviewed v2.6.8.101 Beta on Mar 25, 2010

ST (Spyware Terminator) is a VERY good, broad-spectrum anti-malware application. I have rated it "4" instead of "5" only because it is a trifle heavy on CPU usage.

In this arena, there are *somewhat better* choices, but none of them are free. I will name just 2 examples of ST's NON-free competitors:

1- A-squared (slightly heavier than ST)

2- Online Armor + (Somewhat lighter than ST. Uses the top-tier Ikarus AV + firewall + HIPS. If you have $$ to spend, this is the cream of the broad-spectrum crop. But ST is 90% as good, & it is a freebie!)

argybee

argybee reviewed v2.6.7.125 Beta on Feb 17, 2010

People shouldn't rate software down because it was the wrong choice for their purpose. To get AV/Spyware protection real-time there MUST be something loaded all the time. Claims re slowing the machine should be verified that this package is the cause. I have NO performance issues on my 10 year old 1Ghz P3 laptop! I have regularly checked out the freeware offerings on this subject and this package is one of the best total solutions around. Too many who don't now what they're talking about in here. It's just a pity the reviewers don't get reviewed so we could all put these comments into perspective. If you really want top av/spyware protection guaranteed then use Linux or similar because Windows is your problem.

mfarmilo

mfarmilo reviewed v2.6.0.110 on Aug 26, 2009

Just did a test install, and after ticking advanced install I did indeed see an option whether to install the toolbar. Tickbox is labelled 'Enable Web Security Guard Toolbar (Recommended)'. If this is unticked, you do not get the crawler toolbar. Obviously some of the posters below need to read what they're clicking 'next' to before saying they haven't been asked things.

Protection is pretty good, but I've often seen the scan miss things I knew were on the machine. The resident shield is quite good, but not much use for the average user as it generates too many queries with very little provocation. Many average users end up either clicking yes or no all the time, both of which can be just as harmful. By average user I mean the majority I come across who immediately describe themselves as knowing very little about computers. To get the best out of this program requires quite a high skill level, but in the right hands should be very effective.

slinkys_delsol

slinkys_delsol reviewed v2.6.0.110 on Aug 26, 2009

I have been using this for years and even with this update, I was not "Forced" to install anything.

If you do the "Advanced Settings" button @ the start of the install, it lets you choose what you want and don't. You should always do a "Advanced / Custom" setup with ANY software package you install.

Also use the Direct / Offline version of this Install:
http://dnl.spywaretermin...areTerminator_Setup.exe

It's still an effective tool and gets: *****

And NO "Some Guy" I am no programmer. If fact I am a Desktop Admin that in my 15+ years doing this have learn that becasue a Toolbar is now part of the install does not clarify it as an "Update".

The Crawler NEVER installs under the Advanced Setup. If you open ST and click that you want "Real Time Protection" and tell it you want it "Enabled" then it will start to download the installer. By Default, the Offline Package (Link above) does NOT include these features as default. You most likely used the Installer provided here which is the "Idiot Proof" one for people that can't be bothered with making their own decisions.

Uninstall the version you have an use the Offline Installer (Link Above)

SuperAntiSpyware freeversion doesn't provide realtime protection, so forget it. This program may not have gotten better lately, but it's still the best program of it's type if you're not interested in paying anything for acceptable spyware protection. What was once an excellent freeware spyware scanning/removal utility has now become the utility of futility. Forget the fact that you are forced to install a toolbar that replaces your default search without asking. I'm focusing on the ability to actually remove malware. A full scan now takes HOURS whereas older versions and competing products (Avast, S&D) take about 40 minutes for full scan. When it actually does find something it fails to remove anything (a subsequent scan reveals the same infected file even after reboot). This and another PC would lockup intermittently until Spyware Terminator was removed. No more intermittent lockups.

Seems ecvogel is correct, spyware removers are good for a couple of years then it's time to find something else. Bye bye Spyware Terminator.

ecvogel

ecvogel reviewed v2.5.6.316 on Mar 26, 2009

Between the installing of the toolbar trickery and seems to lack finding half the stuff. I much prefer a-squared and SuperAntiSpyware now. Seems a spyware remover lasts 2-3 years, then you have to find the new kid on the block to get a solid program.

sirhardi

sirhardi reviewed v2.5.6.316 on Mar 24, 2009

I give the nprogram itself a 5 BUT now you arebeing FORCED to install even when using Advanced setup, which is normal to leave certain items out.
I do NOT intend to run any sort of tthird party item with a specific program function.
This also means, that the Crawler is excempt from their spyware definitions , which would be automaticallty crippled if installed by ceertain other programs.
Too bad, i also used this proggie since the start.

I've been using Spyware Terminator before it was popular, I've yet to have a problem That little toolbar problem, that is IF you decide to install it. The question is why install it if you didn't want it? Like all software (Especially freeware) pay attention to the installer freeware is free because of third party offers and secondary software installers WITH the option of not installing. Other than that, works great, real-time protection, does boot time scanning, works very similar to Comodo Firewall with an install or normal mode. You even have the option of integrating it with ClamAV for a very powerful suite of protection, keep in mind that ClamAV is antivirus and you shouldn't have 2 running at once. 5/5 for still offering great free protection.

Along with PC Tools Antivirus all 3 uses less RAM. I use to depend on ESET NOD32 with antivirus but that's bad in a bad way. This one does a great job even on Windows Server 2003. Simply outstanding for a free program. A great way to commence a debug, with AV and spyware scanning. Reasonably light on resources if used as real-time protection, but it has no program white-list so you need to tell it everything yourself.

No problems with removing files or folders from the block list as mentioned by beautifuldisaster. 1/2 point off for having extra "stuff" (Web Security Guard) packaged with the AS program. 1/2 point off for not offering to install in a custom folder, which can be a security problem. Nothing catches them all, madmike, including the paid solutions. This is an outstanding free anti-spyware app: and when used in conjunction with a couple of others is very effective at cleaning up a machine. It's real-time protection has no brains, but is effective for a knowledgable user to block malware installations.

Ideally though, you're better off not getting bugged in the first place. Often an infected machine is beyond the skill of your average user to clean thoroughly. Until someone can make a 'kill-all' anti-malware app: don't get bugged!

Very good. Does a pretty good job removing spyware. I do not run the "realtime" module, rather I use the scan feature. As for a service running, most all of these programs do now, with the exception of Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware has a running service also.

argybee

argybee reviewed v2.2.0.355 Beta on Apr 1, 2008

This is a very good choice for those without the bucks. I have had no problems stopping and starting their service (using another service manager). On my 7 year old laptop this is important because performance is slightly impaired with real-time protection turned on (including clam av and HIPS). I've had a couple of false positives but they are neatly handled by this program and that's better than letting stuff through. I don't quite agree with their idea of fast scans though - a full scan over 6Gb (including av) = 2 hours. I believe any embedded spyware issues are old-hat and it sure is nice to have anti-spy and av under one roof.

Overall, it's a top-notch spyware scanner - and the ability to scan with ClamAV is a nice extra. The real-time scanner is quite heavy on resources but if you want it (I don't), I don't see it being an issue on any but the oldest machines.

Only complaints: Lots of false positives, and whenever you run it, it sets sp_rsser.exe as an automatic service that I need to remember to turn off. You would think that by not choosing the real-time service this wouldn't happen. Not a big deal, but it strikes me as a bit sloppy.

I ran it for the first time just yesterday and it found "Popcaploader",the scanning engine is a bit slow but that to me is not a drawback.Previously I scanned my system with Esset's security suit,AVG antispyware,Spybot S&D and Lavasoft ad-aware 2007.AVG was the only one that traced a high risk threat "Downloader.Agent.fmb,.../system32/svchost.exe" and Spyware terminator the only one that traced "Popcaploader". I must say that before these scans I had to remove a rootkit that AVG anti-rootkit found :Hidden driver,an6phwaj.sys, which other anti rootkit software like "Rootkit Revealer" failed to trace it.
My opinion is that you definitely can't rely on just one program. Use one for real time protection and "Spyware Terminator" would be just fine for the job , and use as much as you can for scanning the whole system when you suspect that a threat has invaded your security or at your routine scans.Spyware Terminator is a "must have" tool in your arsenal.

This program is the bomb. It's a great little program. However some features in this program will clash with other programs. For example: If you run Avast, AVG, or any other Anti-virus software. Do not install clamav. This is what caused tuna's error that he/she got.

This program in my views, is better then ad-aware, and spybotS&D. I have not had no problems with it, and I have been using this software for years, with out a fault.

I do use avast, and have tested various viruses with both avast, and clamav. Avast has detected 95% more then clamav has.

ST full-scan found NO critical objects, while a fresh Spybot install found a dozen of them. I began my test of this program w/ fresh load of XP Pro(multiple repartitions and formats of drive in DOS), ALL updates applied, browsing w/ Firefox 5.0. Similar scenario w/ AVG, S&D and old Adaware rarely found problems, as reaffirmed by CCleaner, HJT and various Rootkit scanners.

The thing is though, instead of being installed with the software such that when you remove the software the "adware" is removed with it, it is installed separately. So if you remove the software the "adware" remains behind.

Spyware Terminator is the best free Anti-Spyware Software with just a little competition with Spyware Doctor. ST effectively detects and removes trojans, tracking cookies, worms, and other viruses. For me, it exterminated 2 Trojans AND 7 files containing the remains of it. This software is highly recommended.

It boasts a strict RealTime Shield protection...
sometimes too strict

It blocks simple processes such as an IE component, media players, flash players, other Anti-Spyware Softwares, or AIM.

HeyBlinkin

HeyBlinkin reviewed v2.0.0.165 Beta on Jul 30, 2007

Are you confusing Spyware Terminator with SpyBot, RaGhul?

TeaTimer is the name given to SpyBot's realtime guard, which is inferior to Spyware Terminator's realtime protection.

Im not sure what you are referring to with "finds nothing". The Spyware Terminator RTS has three parts:
1) Generic RTS which you can find in most commercial apps like SpySweeper. This will detect threats based on the Spyware Terminator definitions
2) HIPS - this is behavioral and does not require "definitions". It does not define a file as bad or good, just the user has to decide whether the behavior is bad or good.
3) ClamAV - this is the ClamAV realtime guard which is based off of Clam definitions.

If you dont have any infections Im not sure how you expect to have the Spyware Terminator realtime shields detect anything.

Ive been using Spyware Terminator for over a year and the RTS, including HIPS, finds every bad item I have tried to install.

Seeing as how you havent tested in 3 months, as you said, you should attempt to retest with some malware samples you can find. Make sure to have HIPS enabled :P.

SpywareWarrior found Crawler to be clean:
http://www.spywarewarrio...pyware.htm#spyterm_note

SpywareWarrior never brought up any issue with the toolbar. Also be aware that a version of the Spyware Terminator installation exists without the toolbar install.

Seeing as how you havent tested the software in three months, you should consider testing it again so you can give it an accurate review.

RaGhul

RaGhul reviewed v2.0.0.165 Beta on Jul 30, 2007

It seems that most of the positive reviews for this app stem from 2 things:
a) It's pretty.
b) It's TeaTimer runs fast.

However, these pale in comparison to SpywareTerminator's short-comings:

1) It's TeaTimer DOES run fast.
But can anyone verify that it actually FINDS anything? I know everyone's looking for a real-time scanner that does more harm than good, that scans well WITHOUT eating up more resources than the spyware it's supposed to prevent. I would like to see one, too.
Unfortunately, this ain't it.

2) The toolbar.
For those of you who say that Crawler is no longer listed as a suspicious app, you need to read the threads at SpywareWarriors. It's a GREAT site, but admittedly, the navigation and graphics need some updating. When you find the forums I refer to, you'll see that although Crawler is no longer referred to as "BAD", they're still considered shady, and SW are keeping a close eye on ST.

And this toolbar they've added? Not spyware? I heard it was subsequently removed (after SpywareWarriors refused to name them as "trustworthy" because of it), but still... shady.

In all honestly, I haven't tried ST in a few months. I've already tried it 3 times in the past and wasn't impressed. And I haven't found anything new to make me want to give it another chance.

I know what you guys are looking for. I want it, too. Unfortunately, there is no app on the market that has those features yet. But I believe we'll get better results waiting for "trusted" apps to release those features on their own, rather than risking our data to an obviously fake antispyware app.

Spy Terminator is a good program, don't get me wrong. I use alot of Freeware stuff, and the UI of this product caught my eye. It's a Great UI. Makes for easier navigation.

I do use multiple AS software. Kinda was satisfied with Ad-aware. Till I heard it's been bloated. So I looked at Spybot, and I have to agree with them it is clunky. ST is the way to go any more, How ever I don't do beta's cause of the horror stories bout them, and I can tell you a few myself.

I recommend this program before I recommend Ad-Aware.

bobad

bobad reviewed v2.0.0.165 Beta on Jul 11, 2007

Great AS Program. The realtime scanner is the best by far. The on demand scanner is very fast, and permits custom scans. I trust Spyware Terminator more than any other AS program. Ad-Aware has become bloatware, and Spybot's realtime scanner is clunky. The only Freeware AS program that comes close is Comodo. My only wish for an Explorer shell menu to scan local and network files and folders.

I do not like the clunky, silly Web Security feature, and do nor recommend selecting to install it.

I do not like the fact tha ST install does not allow a custom folder. That's a security breech.
This is a beta, and I'm hoping that will be fixed.

At least one site (Major Geeks) is responsible enough to remove this spyware. The following is a quote from the site.

"Spyware Terminator now bundles Crawler.com search engine with its anti-spyware program.

http://www.crawler.com/privacy_policy.aspx

As you can see by the privacy policy, Crawler does not appear to be harmful, but it does log ip addresses, routes all searches through them and tracks movements for page rankings (optional).

That said, we find bundling any sort of toolbar or software with an anti-malware application to be inappropriate. Someone looking to remove already unwanted software from their machine should not be forced to install MORE software in order to do this.

Spyware Terminator has been de-listed for this reason until, if ever, the bundled software is removed."

Also I really do believe that should they decide sometime in the future that it would be more profitable for them to add spyware again, they will in a heart beat. But I believe this because I do not trust past scum.

@MattLee:

Exactly what spyware do you claim is in Spyware Terminator? A lot of sources much more reliable than you say there is no spyware or adware in this program. They want people to buy their Corporate edition, so why would they put spyware in their anti-spyware program. You make no sense.

I have scanned my system with:
Windows Defender
Emsisoft A-Squared Free
Spybot S & D
Ad-Aware SE Personal
Yahoo! Anti-Spy
Spyware Doctor

None of them found anything.

So please, backup your claim of integrated spyware.

This program is great. It has free automatic updates/scanning and real-time shield (including virus scanner via ClamWin and HIPS). And it's free. It is also very easy to use. I recommend it to everyone.

Absolutely THE BEST and MOST EFFICIENT REAL TIME ANTISPYWARE program that I have ever used. And believe me, I have used a lot. My previous faves were Spyware Doctor, Counterspy, and maybe SpySweeper...but they all have flaws that this does not. Not a resource hog, really, like SD, not repetitive, like CounterSpy...and just overall, a really descriptive, well designed program! And, to boot...it's FREE! Who can complain? I sure can't. Kaspersky and Spyware Terminator together sure make a killer combo for security!

Excellent AS program. Occasionally fails to load the realtime driver, which is a definite annoyance. Quirky Auto Update. Although it is turned on, it does not work automatically. Sometimes the manual update does not find updates that you know are available. The latest version does not allow a custom install folder, which is a major annoyance. Certain tenacious Spyware such as Drive Cleaner absolutely own ST. Although it finds it, attempts to remove it fail miserably.

I recommend you don't fiddle with the silly Web Security Guard. It's almost as bad as much of the rubbish from which the AS protects you.

robmanic44: traps???

Jegar48: so true. They are still writing reviews based on very old information, which includes 1) Crawler's previous business practices (which have been long since abandoned), 2) the SpywareWarrior listing (which has BEEN REMOVED...REPEAT: REMOVED...in other words it is a TRUSTWORTHY PROGRAM. You guys who are still in question should ask either OldFrog or Suzy on the SpywareWarrior forums), 3) um whatever else is out there.
People dont seem to realize that there arent many free solutions WITH REALTIME SHIELDS out there, and now with Ad-Aware going the commercial route, the field is getting smaller.

RaGhul: You sure about that? I think a lot of peopel are rating the program on the features you get for a freeware product and the dedication of the Crawler team to its product. You wont find a more dedicated and accessible team of developers (check the SpywareTerminator forums).

ranma.2: You do realize that SpywareTerminator is a trustworthy program according to SpywareWarrior, no? Just ask Suzy or OldFrog on the SpywareWarrior forums, they will tell you. They are both Microsoft Security MVPs.

guevara: they ask people that so they can inform people like yourself that the product is in fact of high quality and trustworthy. Very simple.

Anyway, with that aside, SpywareTerminator is now tackling a new field dominated by McAfee SiteAdvisor. They have a new product which I think is bundled with SpywareTerminator called Web Security Guard (WSG). It is exactly the same as McAfee SiteAdvisor except it is Crawler home made solution. It is very nice. I cant wait for SpywareTerminator 2.0...it is going to be very nice.

This is by far the best free anti spyware product I have tried and/or used in over 3 years of testing such products. The real time protection system is very, very good. The scan routine is thorough and regularly finds and cleans problems, the update path is easy to use and the auto scan routine does just what it claims it will.

I have to agree with ranma.2 and guevara on this one.

Unfortunately, too many people rate these programs on 'how fast' it is, or 'how pretty' the GUI looks.

This program remains suspicious for its former affiliations (reminds me of the ol' XoftSpy), but my main gripe is that it just plain doesn't DO anything... at least, as far as I can tell.

When it comes to antivirus or antispyware, be VERY careful which apps you use, and check to make sure they're TRUSTWORTHY.

The last-updated-in-2005, and-still-without-a-realtime-shield SpyBot?
The last-updated-in-2005, and-still-without-a-realtime-shield SpyDefense?
The last-updated-in-2005, and-still-without-a-realtime-shield AOL Spyware Protection?

Nah, those are too ancient for you...how about some regularly updated products then, with update regularity similar to Spyware Terminator:

OK how about the realtime-shield-lacking SuperAntiSpyware free version, ZeroSpyware free Edition, Arovax AntiSpyware?
Or maybe the fledgling-without-a-bonified-set-of-definitions WinCleaner AntiSpyware?

You only real FREE alternative to this program is Windows Defender. Other than that, the list is short, unless you are willing to pay (which then puts programs like ComputerAssociates' product, Webroot's, etc. in the list of alternatives). But for FREE PRODUCTS, there arent many alternatives to Windows Defender and Spyware Terminator. Id say those are your #1 and #2 free antispy products right there, just because both are updated products, with frequently updated definitions, and an active spyware shield component to the program. A distance #3 is WinCleaner AntiSpyware as it has a free realtime shield, but its definitions are too new to be considered a real player right now.

Yeah, so again, what alternatives?

Excellent resident scanner. It's very effective, yet not too obtrusive. Extremely fast scans, light and stable. My main criticism is that the GUI is a bit convoluted. There are 3 configuration buttons for the various options, and each button has a page of buttons. The buttons have tabs and sliders. I think there's a lot of room for simplification. Another minor criticism is, the daily scan and the update features need to have a "Silent" option, whereby they work without user input. Great free app, and it's clean. Try it, you'll like it.

Having tried several versions of this program let me first say that it indeed show promise but I am not going to give it a 5 as it displays some buggy behavior, failing to load the driver on occasion, applying itself in the start menu without permission. As far as its realtime scanner goes great for a free app.,scanning efficiency is average, popups were annoying but within reason, did not notice system slowdown if any.So this program could be included in your arsenal of anti-spyware apps, although I would include others, but it is not quite ready for the big leagues just yet.

PitoDaddy

PitoDaddy reviewed v1.8.2.936 on Jan 28, 2007

I have been using Spyware Terminator (ST) since Sep 06 and initially thought that it was the best anti-spyware program that I had used. But after comparing it with some others (AD-Aware SE Personal Edition, Windows Defender, AVG Anti-Spyware Free Editon, and Super Anti-Spyware Free Edition) over the past few months I have since changed my opinion about ST. When I conducted deep scan test on my computer with all five of my applications, Super Anti-Spyware (SAS) detected more spyware/adware than any of the others, followed by Windows Defender Final Version (WD), AD-Aware SE (ADA), ST, and AVG Anti-Spyware. SAS and WD both detected one of the ZLOB Trojans that the others had missed. The others only detected tracking cookies. Although, one of ST's previous versions (1.5) did detect some remnant spyware files that I thought had been previously removed by another program. ST does have nice features, however, and the newest version (1.8) seems to operate more efficiently than previous versions with regard to its previously annoying "allow" "block" options pop-ups. Overall, I think that it's pretty good, but it should be used in conjunction with another program (I have it running simultaneously with WD), as no one program detects and removes 100% of all spyware/adware out there. Thus far, I think that SAS is the best at detection and removal, but the free version doesn't have real-time protection...scanning and updating has to be done manually.

gerryf

gerryf reviewed v1.8.2.936 on Jan 25, 2007

Despite it's***ory/relationship(now ended)with malware maker IBIS, ST has progressed nicely as a useful tool in the battle against things we don't want on our computers.

One has to love the realtime scanner, typically only found on commercial apps, and its on demand scanner seems competent enough.

However, it does have flaws. I cannot say how representative my own experiences are when compared to others, but I have installed it on my four home machines, and recommended it to other acquaintences/family members as an expanded test bed of PCs.

In 3 of the 7 machines I have been monitoring for the past 6 months, ST has spontaneusly malfunctioned in several, painful ways. On one machine, it suddenly started preventing any program from saving files. On another, it began blocking emails for Outlook Express. On the third, it simply started chewing system resources like there was no tomorrow, slowing the machine to a standstill.

Now, the other 4 worked (and work) flawlessly, but the 3 required a complete removal of ST, upon which all three machines stopped exhibiting the above problems.

The odd thing was how each problem (which began after an update) was dissimilar from the others.

So, a 3 from me, but still worth watching.

hurzx:
while those tests at malware-test are valid, the problem with them is that they are all over the place, in that they dont stay consistent with what they test. One test it'll be spyware A, B and C, then the next test it'll be spyware D, E and F. So if a program doesnt detect B, E and F, one test its detection will be 66% and the next it'll be 33%. Yes, true, spyware terminator doesn't detect as much as some of the more tenured programs on that list, but you have to be aware of the kind of testing that Malware-Test does before you take it as being iron-clad. Compare this testing method against, say, www.virus.gr, which stays consistent with its testing database, testing the same viruses as well as new ones over and over against new program definitions.

SpywareTerminator has only been on the market for 1.5 years. So considering that it is better than a lot of the well known, tenured programs out there is an achievement in itself. In time, its databases will get to the point that it is one of the best antispyware programs on the market.

The longer I use this program the less impressed I am becoming with it and the less comfortable I am in recommending it when people ask my advice regarding freeware antispyware programs.

The detection has never found anything that Ad-aware or Spybot have not found. There are continual issues with the autoupdating mechanism. Even when I set the program to it's least intrusive settings - for computer newbies - it still delivers no less than 3 dozen popups asking for user permission when a Java application runs from a web site.

There is just no way that this program could offer any sort effective protection when I have to tell people to just continually click on "Allow". Yes, user education is the most important and effective means to avoiding spyware, but this program won't help so long as it expects all computer users to recognize the significance of "svchost.exe is try to..."

This is a well intentioned effort and I think the developers have actually found that there is more opportunity fighting the darkside rather than operating behind the shadows of it. But some serious overhauls and improvements are needed quickly.

wanderer2005

wanderer2005 reviewed v1.7.0.883 on Dec 6, 2006

Someone mentioned that Spyware Terminator is a rogue antispyware software program, which was true until recently. The website Spyware Warrior did at one time list it as rogue software but, after further investigation, changed its classification. However, many tests have shown Spyware Terminator to be a poor performer. PC Magazine rated it as very poor in both detection and removal.

I don't want to bash the program; however, there are better free security software available, such as Spybot, Ad Aware and Windows Defender. Of note, Spybot has a new scan engine in beta which greatly increases its detection and removal rate. In addition, the final version of Windows Defender is now available and it is markedly improved compared to previous beta versions.

Spyware Terminator is now my favorite AS program, and I highly recommend it. It's the only Freeware AS program that has a decent resident scanner. It has frequent updates, and I can never catch anything with brand A and brand S when I run them behind ST. As for those who say it's best to use one of the the "recommended" AS programs, I agree. ST *is* one of the recommend AS programs, because I just recommended it.

First of all, those idiots who gave it a 1 are being prejudice and didn't even load it on there computer!
I mean one said he had zero items in database, those are the custom rules that you can set for different programs. On to my review...

I am definetely not new to spyware applications and what they do and what features are implemented. I have tried every antispyware application from Ad-Aware to ZeroSpyware. Spyware terminator definetely could be a purchasable program, I would pay more for this than I would for Hot shot companies such as PCTools Spyware Doctor and Webroot SpySweeper. Spyware Terminator has THE BEST protection available in one program. It has HIPS and Startup protection, Homepage protection, Winsock protection, it has everything.

The detection is also great for a free program. It found a trojan on my computer, I submitted to Jottis Online Scan, the only two that recognized it were Nod32 and Kaspersky, the two best AV's around. Talk about good detection, and it found that in a 40 second scan! Tell spyware doctor to do that YEAH RIGHT!

System Resources are incredibly light in Spyware Terminator, it is lighter than any other Antispyware program I have used.

Overall I think this sums into a great FREE antispyware tool that NO ONE should be with out, because Spyware Terminator can block ANYTHING from getting on your comp, and is always getting better, its perfection now, I can't wait to see the 2.0 BETA when that comes out.

Check out the Roadmap of Spyware Terminator which are posted on the FREE forums, so if there is a problem with the program, you can get help from the workers of Spyware Terminator, instead of paying for over the phone tech support. Check out the Roadmap:

http://forum.spywareterm....aspx?g=posts&t=231

I can't believe that anyone here could give this program less than a 4, that shows much much prejudice, and that they didn't install it at all or they installed and immediately uninstalled it. How lame can you get, if you are going to write a review ACTUALLY USE THE PROGRAM!!

i've been using ST for about 2 months now, and recently installed the beta, 1.6.0.811. Have not had a single significant problem with it. It is fairly light on resources, scans quickly, and has realtime protection, for free. Updates are frequent, there are several categories of protection, almost too configurable for the average user, and to mitigate against newbie mis-config issues, the user can specify his/her level of expertise during, or any time after, installation. The support forums are helpfull, and the developers' responses to questions indicates an above average level of commitment to the program and care to the users, which I find quite surprising in a freeware. It also comes with the option of installing Clamwin antivirus (default=off during install) which I cannot comment on, as didn't install it.
So I was a little surprised to read some of the reviews below, until realising that extreme prejudice is regrettably alive and well on this review site. If it was based on experience, that might be understandable. That it seems to be based in opinionated ignorance costs those reviewers, and this site, a certain amount of respect lost.
And, although I shouldn't have to say this, I work at an airport and have nothing to do with this industry. I'm just an end-product user.

I didn't find anything that can justify the given low rating. More like a preconceived opinion.

SnapFiles, MajorGeeks and Spyware Warrior (http://www.spywarewarrio...pyware.htm#spyterm_note) does not have anything against it.

In addition, a software magazine (Info from Brazil) tested Spyware Terminator and Windows Defender. Gave 6,3 (of 10) for ST and 6,6 (of 10) for WD. Nothing wrong with ST itself was found.

Pros:
*FREE!
*Realtime (memory resident) protection
*HIPS (Host Intrusion Protection System)
*Automatic updates
*Option to scan from Context Menu
*Flexible, easy configuration
*Small memory footprint
*Fast scanner
*Very good spyware detection
*An option to use ClamWin AV (great secondary AV)

Cons:
I can't think of any. Honestly!

This is the kind of software that is rare to find for free, nowadays. Fast, complete, real time protection, on demand file analisys,HIPS protection, very customizable, not heavy on system resources and it tracks malware very nicely. So nicely that I am considering to uninstall some of the other antyspyware programs I have on my machine. It made a full/deep scan of 70.000 objects in 17 minutes, which is very good. However one has to be carefull to analise the scan results as it can origin some false positives. Nice program, no doubt. I am not using the Clam AV, as I use - and trust - Avast for so long that I cannot live withou it. Good pairing: Spyware Terminator and Avast: you'll be secure, no doubt about that. I forgot how sensitive data like what browser you are using, time of day, and an IP address is to a antispyware company. If this was Microsoft or your ISP you would have a case, but this is an antispyware company.

If it is such a problem, then quit complaining on here and contact the developers, as Im sure they will gladly listen to your complaints. You can use the contact form in Spyware Terminator.

You can also go so far as to block the news page, its not that hard, genius.

Quit giving a 1/5 rating on something so insignificant as this news page and rate the program please.

Hmm I'm a little curious about this. When I install a new program I always use InCtrl5 to monitor what it does and use Ethereal in case it uses the internet. After installing this program I check InCtrl5 and noticed nothing suspicious but when SpywareTerminator is running I did notice something.
When you open SpywareTerminator it downloads some news from the internet (you can see the news on the right side) The news is downloaded here
http://www.spywareterminator.com/legal/news.aspx
If you take a look at the source you'll notice some javascript at the bottom which points to here
http://ws.crawler.com/istat.aspx?M=SPYTERM

And this is what I saw that Ethereal had captured, take a look at the source of the last web site and you will see that your ip, web browser, windows version, screen resolution and a few other tid bits are collected.
The only thing missing for me to call SpywareTerminator spyware itself would be a list of websites that I have recently visited.

This might not be a big deal to some, but it is to me.
I've decided to uninstall this program and forget about it.

PKShadow you were probably infected with adware prior to installing Spyware Terminator.

This software is clean.

It was listed on SpywareWarrior for a while since the company, Crawler, was a name associated with Adware. They removed the entry as they proved their software is clean and of high quality.

By the way Spyware Terminator integrates ClamAV into its scan and realtime shield, not to mention its automatic updater, so you get a free antivirus with this program.

@ pkshadow

Your statement is completely wrong. I checked with Ewido and Spybot, which found nothing. I also checked in numerous forums to see a confirmation, in particular at WilderSecurity. Everybody confirms that it is an excellent prog, although it has short history. Compared to Ewido it uses half less RAM. I still wait a moment and may uninstall other stuff like SpywareBlaster and even Ewido.

This is spyware!
After installing this and a reboot much later Norton Firewall blocked Trojan Bla.
PestPatrol found entries for the Cool Tool Bar (ctoolbar) which is Adware.

DO NOT INSTALL also it does not work worth a dam_!

A spyware scan by trend dot com also found it and listed it as spyware.

Also when telling program to not start up at boot it did not show a icon but was found running and also taking 31megs of ram.

This program freakin' rocks. Definitely worthy of 5 stars. It's fast, thorough, and best of all: it protects you in real-time.

This seems to be a very good and effective program. I do wish it gave one the ability to select multiple drives for a custom scan, it doesn't seem to pay complete attention when one selects the "scan only infectable files" option, and its GUI is just a bit too flashy for my taste, but overall, it's a formidable entry in the field.

This program has a bunch of promise , the only thing i'm not real clear on is this , let me paint a picture for you , the majority of spyware scan I perform are on a external bay with a customers hdd running for cleaning purposes , this program catches allot but after i'll scan with ewido and ewido will catch much more or pieces of what this program left behind? this leads me to wonder why? is it using a different type of scanning process, not sure i've searched thier site but can't come up with a valid reason , but this program seems to come out on top while scanning live on the pc...

Anyway , it's coming along very well.

The best antispyware product on the market, and it took Betanews/Fileforum almost 6 months to figure this out and actually list this software. Softpedia has been listing this for the longest time.

Why is this the best?
1) it mixes the best of the most popular interfaces. It models its scan interface after adaware and its overall interface after MS Antispyware Beta 1.
2) It has autoupdates for both the program and the definitions.
3) It comes with an activeshield which can be modified to have the most basic of protection (startup protection and such) to the most ADVANCED of protection (HIPS).
4) It comes with HIPS, something not many antispy products have if any outside this one.
5) It supports mutliple languages in the program, no extra downloads required.
6) It scans pretty darn fast.
7) It has a antispyware network like SpyNet and such.
etc. etc. etc.

It is an overall amazing program. The best part of it all is that they release two versions of each version. One that includes and integrates ClamAV into the scan/realtime shield and that which doesn't include, your choice.

In the future I think Spyware Terminator will have an awesome interface for ClamAV the way I understand it, but right now there are just a few checkboxes here and there for ClamAV for the purposes of integrating with the program.

Like most antivirus products, Spyware Terminator discloses its ENTIRE detection library, which is available for viewing over at the homepage, and the main screen in the program shows the 5 most recently added items to the detection database.

THE DATABASE NOT ONLY distinguishes between all different types of bad stuff, but it has a library of good programs it detects so it can minimize the amount of false positives. The best part of this feature is that if Spyware Terminator does not have the detection for some of your software it will show up under Unknown SW (after the scan) and you can do one or both of two things: 1) tell the program it is safe and move it to the safe category or 2) e-mail your entire log to Spyware Terminator and tell them what the entry is so they can add it to the database.

Overall its an awesome software with a VERY responsive development team.
And what is great about Spyware Terminator, aside from all its features, is that they release new builds like every 2 or 3 days, which is great for the people of this website.

If you rate this any lower than a 3 you are certainly misinformed about this software.

I'm kind of disappointed cause I found a bug in the first minute I started using the program, I know it's a beta, the bug is: After change a setting in the "real Time Protection tab the program language changed to french, or whatever it is, I just can't read the UI anymore and had to uninstall the program,I will try again in the next version, Hope it get fixed, so I can try the program.

Apart from the past of the mother company, Spyware Terminator is one of the best and most intuitive antispyware tools with one of the highest detection rates. It could use less memory (it uses around 15 megabytes of RAM) but I cannot complain because it is free.

5 Stars - Its Free!

Awesome Find BetaNews as always! You have a wonderful Site.

I placed this link at Digg so vote for it if you like it. This software rocks. I tested it with 5 spyware samples that I had and it detected them all, the beta version of the software includes HIPS and Anti-virus, which is something you can not find anywhere else for FREE.

Its a rock solid program, and considering its real time, has hips, and anti-virus and its FREE!!!! Of course I’m going to give it a five star…..

I’m still going to keep Adaware, but I like the idea of having a second spyware detection software.

What was once a rogue application (mainly due to some relationship with an adware company, rather than a fault with the program) happens to be one of the best free antispyware apps yet. Realtime protection, with a built in HIPs that only alerts you when something bad or 'unknown' is trying to access your PC. It keeps a pretty sophisticated list of what processes are good and what they're used for as well.

The detection rates are fine, it was able to detect a wintools spyware file I purposely placed on my desktop.

There are a few quirks with the program though. For one many of the advanced options take a little digging to find, and the programs GUI while flashy is a bit too green for my tastes. And the company behind Spywareterminator (Crawler) doesn't exactly fit the bill for a professional antimalware that i'd put 100% trust behind, due to the fact half the services they offer are screensavers and games, and 'toolbars with built in weather'? I mean honestly, who's going to take them seriously when in the middle if your antispyware download you're grabbing some super cool 3D screensaver? I don't imply Crawler distributes adware, but it's just a bit funny.
