Publisher's Description
Star Downloader is a download manager that accelerates your downloads by splitting the files into several parts and downloading them simultaneously. Download speeds are increased further by choosing the fastest mirror sites. You may automatically resume broken downloads if your connection is lost or if your computer accidentally shuts down. With the scheduler, you can download files at certain times of the day. It may also automatically connect to your ISP and hang-up upon completion of downloads.
To help you organize and manage your downloads there is an advanced category system and an integrated unzipping utility can automatically unzip and install downloaded files. Star Downloader also integrates with your antivirus program to automatically scan files upon completion of the download. It supports FTP and HTTP. Proxy is also supported. The clean and simple interface and the multilingual support for over 50 languages makes it easy for everyone to use.

I just hate the HUGE buttons on the toolbar, there is no option to decrease their size. When I first ran the programa it asked me about firefox/mozilla integration, I answered yes, then thunderbird opens...how cool is that? Maybe a firefox 2.0 beta issue? Another cool problem: when clicking the uninstall start menu item it shows a erro "Could not open install.log file." you click OK and it does not uninstall. I just hate it, never want to see it again, no second chances for this.

Great app, never let me down. Simple, but not oversimplified.

*rpavl* - what on earth are you going on about, never read so much garbage in my life [well maybe a slight exaggeration], and what is a preocess anyway.
Good program, does what it's supposed to do, integration with Firefox etc makes life easy, never had a problem with it over the years I've used it.

Do not download this garbage....locks into registry and unable to uninstall takes over entire preocess. BEWARE.

How complicated does a downloaded need to be? How complicated do you want to be? It should be transparent and behind the scenes. You never have to give Star Downloader "permission" to download a file, so in turn it never wastes your time. Great app.

Problem I had was trying to disable its associations when I got to download sites that would only function properly with the standard IE downloader or other non-Star forms. It persisted until I wa forced to uninstall and the GUI doesn't really facilitate "temporary" disabling necessities. Truth, be told that is an interfacing problem in several of the free downloading packages I have tried, inclusive of fdm, although the later has definitely improved over time.

This is, to date, the last freeware version. If you go to their site, you can either d/l the freeware vers or the shareware vers. [Freew vers also avail at download.com]

These guys know how to make good software. Great job! It does exactly what you'd want it to do and not full of memory hogging fluff.
It has my vote!

first of all 'net transport' is NOT free. It used to be but it's not anymore.. for quite a while now.
this piece of software is more a competitor to fdm (free download manager) which is - the name already implies it - free as well and quite mature. By the way there's also a commercial Stardownloader Pro version available.. fdm never let me down - no reason for me to switch. Starforce downloader looks promising though.. but I don't like adopting to new GUIs all the time :)

Use to love it but I have switched to Net Transport. Net Transport is free and has no spyware. It rocks.
Update: It's free if you don't want the extra features. Most of them are done better by other apps like smartFTP and Putty. The parts that are free are the ones most users will use for downloading from http sites mainly.

Star Downloader is definately a good download manager. The GUI has a few inconsistancies that annoy me a litte, and it does not have a percentage rating to indicate the download progress. Also, there are some options that I would have thought could not be left out which actually have. Apart from that Star Downloader is a really great free download manager which gets the job done with no hastles. Gets my vote :)

This is best downloader for me. Used thousands of them, and now, i'm using free 1.42 version & happy with that.
And as a shareware developer too, i understand why SD come to be a shareware in Pro version. Life is hard, people.

Useless, it does not support throttling.
Till now, nothing beats FlashGet.
Go for LeechGet if you don´t like adware

Such a good free app, that I bought the Pro version. Simply awesome.

Best downloader i've used... but on simtel it says this new release is "freeware - 30 days". Hmmm. Does someone wanna install and let me know if it's that fake "freeware" they should call "expireware"? *chuckle* If so i'll be sticking to 1.42 thanks :-)
Krivosh reviewed v1.42 on Apr 9, 2004
I think it's a very good program - i tried Flashget, Net Transport &... man! only Star Downloader Stays on the same speed - I think Star Downloader get's a 5 for that...

Hey dummies, there is still the freeware version available from them. I donated $10 about ayear ago and they gave me a registration code for the pro version for no charge because I donated even that long ago. Don't downgrade the program because it is shareware when ther is still a freeware version available from them.
TomRC reviewed v1.42 on Jan 11, 2004
Still a very good tool.
BUT its Shareware now (19$!).
Everytime the same game:
1 Hey here is great freeware tool for you We dont want

Ummm... if this program if Freeware, why does the website only have v1.50 Pro available for download which costs $19.95 (30 day trial)??? BTW, the Betanews download link points to this Pro version.

No DLM can beat STAR for it's full automation. Integrated to Myie2 (only the best browser in the world!), 1 click does it all, including exiting itself when done!
The only thing I'd like changed is the ability to change the dowload file percent completed tray icon color...
To me it works amazingly well!!

This program would be good if it didn't totally freeze my computer when I play music at the same time.

I have used all the versions since 1.33 thru present. Excpt for the shutdown bug in 1.4, it has performed very well for me with windows 98. It is faster than the system downloader, although I can't verify if it is 400% faster as claimed possible (slow internet connection). The ability to pause and schedule downloads is worth it alone, as is the ability to reconnect and resume from broken connections, not to mention switchable virus system integration. The user interface is thorough and direct. Setup was basically straitforward. It has performed flawlessly for me with mp3, pdf, exe, and all image files I've tried. Although I can't speak for XP, with 98, I consider it a necessity. I have 38 processes running constantly, and it gets along well with them all. I wonder how many people who have trouble with it forgot to configure their firewalls to allow it.

Very good program!
Small, fast, useful.
Biotube reviewed v1.33 on Nov 17, 2002
Great program, but when the file is only availible form one site, splitting files into little chunks like a hundred peices can, and most likly will, slow down the download. Aside from that, Star Downloader is an all-around good program. NOTE: In my last review, I messed up.

this is one of the best DL programs i have seen for ages , and without spyware, easy to config, browser intergration, inc opera. nice interface...a must have and its free , tested using XP 256mg 1001mhz...no problems
visionaire reviewed v1.3 Beta on May 26, 2002
I am forced to give StarDownloader 3 stars. 1.22 still has some very major and quirky interface bugs, generally with the manner in which Delphi handles its forms. However, I love it and use it every day. For some reason 1.3 beta ceases to function for me, so I am holding on with 1.22.
The main download/progress area and many other features refuse to work in 1.3, however this could simply be due to me bumbling the installation up from 1.22.
Just try it. It's completely free and you will love it. One of those versions will work fine for you. I expect nothing but better things down the road.
wonko reviewed v1.3 Beta on May 26, 2002
Nice enough program (and it gets big points for being real freeware), but it doesn't properly integrate with Mozilla despite having that option in the preferences dialog.
foxcat reviewed v1.21 on Feb 28, 2002
Having used Gozilla (intrusive/spyware) and Download Accelerator (good but Adware) this no-nag program is effective and user friendly. Its features are pretty much identical with DA and it's just as fast. Recommended.
