Used this player for several years, but I fear it's jumped the shark.
I kept hoping the random crashes would be cured by each new release, but no joy. Worse, as alluded to by several others, it's beginning to suffer feature bloat.

I used to like KMPlayer player very much, however, within minutes I'd uninstalled this version.

Windoze-8-on-fone fanboys will probably love it, but I don't take kindly to the UI being stuffed up for the sake of fashion. Moreover, I run it on a PC, not a phone.

Alas, another player relegated to history's dump.

Used to be my favorite player, it still had some limitations but now it's just buggy and outdated, I don't mean the build I mean the code, after I tried this new version it crashed after changing skins and trying to load a new file, I especially hate the new "webpage like" user interface. KMPlayer has been succeeded by PotPlayer written by the same Korean developer that created KMPlayer and is much faster and more customizable. One tip I can give you is when switching from KMPlayer to PotPlayer the transition can be difficult so you might need to tweak it so that it feels like home to you. http://goo.gl/gUwEJ

In future versions I would like have some advanced features like ones found in Splash PRO EX - http://mirillis.com/en/products/splashexport.html

    Excelent player. Thank you.

EDIT: And YES, installer is painfull for me too. I allways have to install it in VMware Workstation and then copy back to my system. I do NOT like installed *features*.

I understand why netean complains about this latest release. I've been surprised to see the new splash page too and I wondered why they added it. But all in all it doesn't bug me that much. At least the look is pretty neat, the Album Art quite good. But I don't use it for these new features. So I can simply skip those and use it as usual. I thought Pot Player was gonna replace KM. No way! KM still rocks and even though I've been a convinced VLC user for years now, I'm probably gonna switch to KM!

@CyberDoc999: I know what you mean. I got the same feeling comparing KM side by side with VLC. Well, it's pretty simple: change the default Video Render to Enhanced Video Render. At least, it worked like a charm on my computer. Good luck ;)

Oh dear oh dear, where do I start.

i've been a user of KMplayer for years, it's always installed side by side with VLC, with KMPlayer being, in my opinion nicer looking and offer better playback options, sounding and looking better. (VLC does have it strengths too though)

Sadly, very sadly this is a disaster of a railcrash of a program.

Firstly - It tries to install poxy crapware, Ask toolbar for example, despite saying no to the installer it went ahead and installed it anyway. Asked if I wanted Pandora TV, no thanks, but it installed it anyway.

Now it starts seemingly is just a storefront trying to entice you buy crappy looking chinese games that look they're designed to appeal to 10 year olds.
Couldn't get it to stream or play anything until I'd added a "library", even then it failed dismally to stream anything at all.
The uninstaller supplied may as well have been a button that just laughed when you pressed it - left bucket loads of files and registry entries, didn't uninstall the ask toolbar or pandora either.

This used to be absolutely fantastic and I used to recommend it to everyone. Now, now it's just bloated malware in my opinion, somewhere underneath is the player I once loved, but it's so deeply buried under crap to be useless.

Avoid avoid avoid avoid. If you still have version 2.9 or below, keep it safe but do NOT touch this one.

Be sure to opt out of all the crap when installing.

It's got "Media Center" style now, with "Apps" (looks like Tv series, K-POP videos, and games at the moment) and a "Service Store", but the menu options are pretty much the same, but there are some new additions.

I'll have to give it some use later when I get a chance.

I too switched to Daum Potplayer several months ago, which is from the original author of KMPlayer, though you have to do a search to find the translated version.

I'll have to give 3.0.0.1442 a try since I've found all players sometimes have problems with certain files that other players don't. It's good to have an arsenal just in case.

KMPlayer has always been a really good player, but it hasn't been as actively developed since it was sold. I just hope that Real Networks being one of KMPmedia's partners doesn't turn it to crap.

Whether chahoolee's right about IP issues or not, The KMPlayer is a class act.

It's a media player that's been designed by someone who actually understands user ergonomics and knows that a user has, for example, to be able to easily adjust the brightness of a movie without being distracted by contrarily arranged or fiddly menus. Here, The KMPlayer is a sheer delight when compared to say VLC or MPC H/C, it's smooth, easy to use and its windowing has an unobtrusive small footprint with a styling and color that doesn't intrude into the content (a la ugly, clunky VLC's bright yellowish window features).

As well as being easy to use, The KMPlayer has many tweakables and setting adjustments to keep even the most avid multimedia junkie happy.

I've tried and use many different players and whenever I test The KMPlayer I'm impressed. more10s' right, this version seems to be comparatively free of bugs (the reasons why in the past I've not used it as my default player). Previous versions 3.0.01441 and 3.0.0.1433 were just too buggy.

The KMPlayer vindicates my scathing comments about VLC when reviewing version 1.1.10 (Jun 6, 2011)). Any reasonable comparison would have KMPlayer miles in front of VLC--and also MPC Home Cinema just on useability alone. And unlike MPC H/C, KMPlayer doesn't lock up my nVidia card whenever I fast-forward into a movie.

A final point, KMPlayer passes my main compatibility test AOK. I test players with three different mpeg encodings of an old B&W doco that's on the Internet Archive (one is MPEG2 and two are MP4s). Some players fail to render one of the MP4s--including ALL versions of VLC (there's no sound accompanying the video). The KMPlayer effortlessly sailed through all three, [The link to that doco is in my VLC review.]

All up, The KMPlayer is excellent software; rather than just being a wrapping around a bunch of CODECs as VLC is, The KMPlayer has been carefully designed with its useability in mind. Other designers please take note.

Excellent media player, with many A++ features, but far too buggy to be useful. I was using the version 1434 on my HP G60 laptop, with Win7HPx64 [3GB RAM] and switched to this just today. Large vob files of more than 1 GB just stutter and the duration of the video is not shown correctly. The same vid runs alright on VLC.

Why don't these guys test it thoroughly themselves, before they decide to ruin their reputation with such buggy stuff. The least they could do is to label it a beta, so people would be more careful before they replace a working version. The earlier version also had a problem with large vob files, and would freeze if the position slider was moved too far.

It is true that they slowed development and that Pandora is (at least) a very dangerous company (used to install spyware with their products), but at least they (still) did not destroy this one.
About instability mentioned by other users, the player major strength is the flexible configuration. I learn that with several Nvidia and some ATI graphics drivers, the Enhanced Video Renderer have stability issues (drivers problems). But as everything is configurable, you can use an alternative (VMR9 renderless work best in such cases). That is what make this player the best, not for starters, though

I am in complete agreement with the last two posts. In fact, they provide an very truthful picture of what one has to deal with when installing and using KMPLayer. I, too, have been using the KMPlayer for a long period of time: its persistent error messages, perennial instability manifesting itself as freezes or regularly occurring total system lock-ups were slowly eroding my patience with this program. Basically, I ended up using it as the last resort -- and always prepared for some trouble.

I installed today the most recent version in hope that the system lockups -- which for me is a critically important isuue -- have been corrected in th enewest version. Instead, as has been witnessed by so many others, I was stung with this Ask.com swindle, ...and new, irrelevant error message right after the fresh install.

Like antigin, my predecessor in this thread, I am always very careful with installers, unchecking anything that smells like spyware/crapware, and exactly like in his case, the Ask,com bar, search engine, home page all were surreptitiously installed/changed, both in Explorer and Firefox. Disgusting... And I agree: this is what we call a swindle.

I give 2 stars SOLELY for the fact that the KMPlayer can play most video formats and has an extensive subtitles support.

I thank the gentleman who mentioned that he had switched to MPC-HC. It has been a long time since I used Media Player Classic. I downloaded and installed MPC-HC after reading his post here, and having tested it extensively I can say that MPC-HC seems to be perfectly capable with all the video formats I checked, doesn't seem to suffer when the media file path has Unicode characters, and handles several subtitle formats as well. I'll be using now MPC-HC.

I spent a long time using KMPlayer. I grew to appreciate its many features and even its interface. But I constantly suffered from its stability problems; which sometimes meant weird error messages, other times a simple crash, still other times a crash that turned out into a system freeze when the program was terminated, and occasionally, an immediate and total system freeze when a file KMPlayer didn't like was opened.

I've finally had a bellyful and I give up.

Have used this app for years and now it disappointed me too much with his politics. I always uncheck various toolbars while installing programs, but one day I found ask.com toolbar, search engine, homepage on my browsers and can't understand how the hell it had been installed. Today I tried to reinstall the player and found again ask.com toolbars. It surprised me. I can't believe that I have passed this agreement and do not uncheck the boxes. I tried to reinstall again and again and the setup process is different every time.
After installation process I press 'Next' and sometimes there is an ask.com agreement window before the finish, sometimes it isn't, but toolbars still being installed. Sometimes after installation process after pressing 'Next' you see drop through window for a miliseconds and then finish window. Then if you click 'Back', you will see an agreement window that you have passed supposedly twice clicking 'Next' before (it's a PandoraTV trick). But other times there is no an agreement windows after installation process and after clicking back at finish window, but TOOLBAR STILL ARE INSTALLING. That's the SWINDLE! It' a shame.

The only good thing in v2.9.4 is the update of some codecs but nothing more.
It was such a great program and had so many features pending like internal full support for ssa subs, ability to change font size in subs, improve support for TV and HDTV, improve the file navigator... but now is constantly worsening, with each version you get new bugs, and although is optional the installer comes with a crappy toolbar.

In March 2008 development has been taken over by Pandora TV, a Korean streaming video company. Since then, development has been slow – the team appears to consist of just one individual.

I use KMplayer a little more often though because I find it loads quicker and plays more formats without oddities - VLC does some strange things with some .mov movies by opening 2 windows etc.

On the whole, I think VLC and KMplayer are pretty comparable in terms of features, with KMplayer having just a few more (or at least making them more easily found)

@ all the "Ask Toolbar" comments...is it really that difficult to uncheck 1 tick box?

@ been...without your consent? I wonder how I've managed to dodge the Ask Toolbar installation each time I've updated (could it possibly be that I actually read before clicking & you didn't?).

    To the aforementioned;
If unchecking 1 tick box is too much for you to handle then this player is definitely WAY too advanced for you! Kindly step away from the keyboard and no one gets hurt. You may also want to consider improving your reading comprehension skills while you're at it.

Rating an excellent program 1 star because it has OPTIONAL Ask Toolbar included? A bit harsh just because you don't know how to uncheck a tick box don't you think. Do you also rate all other programs (no matter how good the are) with totally optional toolbars, etc. 1 star? It's a free program, the authors may just want a chance at some compensation for their work, but they make it an option. I'm just wondering how you'd handle the situation...you'd probably just make it payware, am I right? I bet you'd also whine if they dumped the optional toolbar and made KMPlayer payware (or any other free program that did so).

This has been my default player for ~2 years or so & it has played just about anything I've thrown at it. I haven't found anything that does as much and as well as KMPlayer. GOM Player never quite measured up & was always more buggy in my experience. KMPlayer plays some videos fine that VLC renders poorly. Yes I've found some files that KMPlayer has had problems with that another player did ok with, but it's a rarity.

It has a lot of advanced features & settings that can be overwhelming when you dig in (I've had to figure out how to undo a few things I'd accidently done by accidently keying in shortcuts), but that also maked it highly customizable. It does more than any other media player I know of.

Perfect? no, but consistantly better than any of the other media players I've tried in the past or recently.

Awesome player! One problem, if you close the album art window you cannot find it again. Album art is the default window with all the pictures of your videos and is what makes this unique. Good news is they fixed it and you can download the the new album art file at the forum. Skins for this make bsplayer look like it was written in crayon. All video player developers should look at these skins. Codecs are very configurable and I chose to use sharks codecs and CoreAVC h264 instead of internal and used external audio as well. I can't say enough good things about this player. I have used Mplayer, MPHC, Bsplayer, VLC, WMP, and this is the one for all my HD video needs. Windows 7 never looked better!!

this player with new programmer is A BIG SHAME to KMP name...

Ask toolbar ppl you can disable like in uTorrent...
but nvm this, bit s*** is:
-very slow developing... man new version only with partial madVR support and not properly updated ffdshow components is pain in the a** for waiting half year for this...
-many of existing bugs like vertical lines in VMR renderer still exist...
-when dev want to update internal codecs and splitters within KMP, not external Gabest or ffdshow...
-many files are not needed like all files in Plugins folder, causing only crashing and errors... same like some outdated and not update components...
    etc...

I finnaly switch to newest MPC-HC because of this...

This player came on to the scene and really impressed but with the infrequent updates it has really fallen off the pace. I'd say its slightly better than VLC and Gom but when it comes to picture quality it pails in side by side comparisons with MPC and BSplayer and seeing that foobar is a lock for audio I really have no use for this anymore.

I've even stopped recommending it for people who are less savvy and who I didn't want to have to deal with codec packs but BSplayer (which can install codecs locally now) and MPC Homecinema really don't need them so I give either one of those to people now instead of this.

one more thing, KMPlayer used to be offered in a zip package but it hasn't since the new company took over. Sure you can search and find a portable version that someone else has made but seeing that they've stopped making one themselves just shows again(with the few updates) how little effort is being put in to this now.

This version of KMPlayer has been around since about last January. The only difference in this download is the installer is 2MB larger due to the addition of some crapware.

I unpacked the files and found the ASK Toolbar installer has been added. I didn't install it so I don't know if the toolbar is an option or if it is just installed.

You can still find the 12MB installer for this version if you look arout the internet.

I have to say that this player shows lots of promise. It is very quick at what it does, very light and supports almost every major format right out of the box.

That said, I do have two issues right now with it. One is that the default skin does not have a titlebar or "minimalist" mode which allows you to dock it at the top of the screen with the video window detached (ALA Winamp). The second issue is that when loading any video, it takes 5-6 seconds to load the video and begin playback.

Those issues aside, this appears to be a very solid player.

I'm very impressed with this new build...was using 1227 for a while decided to give 1432 a shot. I like the multiple config option which allows me to quickly switch from KMPLAYER's faster, internal codecs to Windows' system codecs for higher quality. I like also that you can make KMPLAYER portable by selecting 'Store settings to KMPCFg.ini' then just copy the KMPLAYER directory to a USB drive or CD. You can capture audio, video or individual frames and now has the ability to create a storyboard similar to MPC's 'save thumbnails' feature. This easily blows away GOMPLAYER and VLC but with all the configuration options novices may be overwhelmed.

    @digitalking:
Zoomplayer is a front-end for Directshow much like WMP or MPC (I was using Zoomplayer for 2 years before I found GOMPlayer them KMPLAYER) - it utilizes whichever codecs/filters are installed on your system. KMPLAYER can be configured to use your system codecs or it's internal codecs which are faster albeit lower quality. The choice is yours.

VLC,MPC Home Cinema and BS player handle the image much better. Thats dissapointing because this has been my go to player. Still plays every format including nsv files which no other player outside of winamp can play BUT picture quality is a big thing imo. It also seems to use a little more memory than I remember. Also I have a video file that only plays audio but BS Player plays it(the other don't either)

    Reviewing 2.9.3.1428 (Feb 3, 2008)

Yes, there was a GPL violation in 2005 but I have looked into the details and I believe the author made an honest mistake due and has adequately addressed the problem. You must remember that Linux is based on Unix except that the code has been rewritten. That's no different than the situation with KMPlayer. Although inspired by MPC and other C++ projects, all KMPlayer code was newly written in Delphi, leaving visible "similarities" in the same sense that Linux is clearly and obviously "similar" to Unix. Apart from those similarities, the author had erroneously distributed the binaries of some GPL libs without the required credits, license text, and links to their source. When Gabest emailed him, he seemed to ignore Gabest for weeks, but it is evident from his forum history and KMPlayer's documentation that he relies upon others to help him with English. Once he understood Gabest's points, he promptly fixed his distribution and he openly posted the parts of his Delphi source which were being questioned so anyone could compare it to Gabest's for themselves. This isn't the behavior we have typically seen from willful violators like CherryOS. It's fine to continue wishing that KMPlayer were open source (and I do) but it's simply wrong to continue accusing it of being in violation of GPL.

On the other hand, KMPlayer isn't particularly special. A substantial portion of KMPlayer's extensive feature list is enabled only by the inclusion of the many GPL libs. In essence, the result of installing KMPlayer is comparable to installing a comprehensive codec pack, especially one which bundles a player like MPC. K-Lite Codec Pack is one example, and I think it is telling that the footprint of the current K-Lite Full is basically the same as the footprint of KMPlayer. The KMPlayer approach gives you a few extra features from a playback perspective like A-B repeat, but going with K-Lite Full would leave you with encoding capability, so it comes down to individual needs.

    Good player.

But I rate this a 1 because it violates GPL.

KMPlayer contains code from both the Guliverkli and ffdshow projects. The author seems to think he can get away with that because he has rewritten the code from C++ to Delphi. That is not the case and according to the GNU General Public License the source code should be published.

I am sick to death of the hype about other players being so good but when its time to do the job you have to keep a second player when they can't handle a format well.

After running KMPlayer for a month I have found I have had NO need to fall back on MPC OR VLC.

Do your own research, take a look here,

The wikipedia comparison is so thorough you will seriously start to wonder why the hell people boast how good other players are when in fact they are s***. It's simply because they don't know better.

Great player, I just found that it display some artifacts at time to play some .vob files. Probably because those .vob were not so well decrypted but what it's weird is that those files play perfectly in MPC ot MPChomecinema (players that use the same mpeg2 decoder from gabest), really weird, probaly a bug.
Otherwise while all those great additional features that this player have are welcome I think that menus should be a little more clean (most common options in menus, the rest in preferences).

The only crackhead is you. ehohead said you don't need to install codec packs anymore and the is a FACT. You DO NOT need codec packs because KMPlayer uses its own internal codecs as you can see in the preferences and in the Plugins folder. Further proof of this is that I can play mov and nsv files without winamp or quicktime on my system.

    dhry

    Reviewing 2.9.3.1427 Beta (Dec 11, 2007)

Echohead is on crack. You do need codecs to play different formats. But KMPlayer loads only the codec required to play each file. Two problems with this program: 1) it takes longer to start up (a few seconds, no biggie) than MediaPlayerClassic, and 2) the options dialog is ridiculous. Way too much crap in there, and I spent something like 20 mins looking for an option to turn "easymove" mode OFF - in other words, I don't want the window to allow me to click anywhere inside it and then be able to drag it around on the screen, I only want draggability from the titlebar where it should be. This mode prevents me from fully enjoying the "Border Patrol" shockwave flash game, amongst others. 5 stars anyway.

Note to the moron above: I stated that you DO STILL NEED CODECS, I never stated that you still had to download a codec pack. KMPlayer uses codecs to play video and whether they're bundled with KMPlayer or not is completely irrelevant. It uses directx filters and winamp plugins so essentially you can consider the entire KMPlayer archive to be yet another codec pack. Look at the root directory of the package. Libmpeg2, theora, realmediasplitter, it's full of the same crap you get from standard codec installer packages. You're telling me it's a big mac, not a whopper. Listen carefully. I'm stating it's still a hamburger regardless. Capische?

I ran this once upon a time. It had issues and trying to uninstall it was great until I saw the hundreds of reg entries it left.
It all boils down to how fast your pc is (for the most part) and what you yourself are comfortable with.
I mainly use gom (installed). If gom can't play something it will automatically direct you to a proper link for the missing codec.
    Gom is also portable.
KM does have some great features but I really don't need a hundred features and/or options in a pc video player. I just want it to work and be as simple as possible.

I have a massive collection of AVI, MKV, OGM (primarily) as well as DVD-Video's, and increasingly AVC (H.264) format, also increasingly is high-def which some players are no good at.

I love my Zoomplayer Pro but I've found myself using KMPlayer more and more. I watch a lot of video and prefer to stick with one player. I bought MCE 2005 but it's really only optimized for DVD-Video. Anyway, KMPlayer is very configurable and the best free solution (possibly the best solution period) for people that know what they are doing.

While it's quite possible to use it without chaning any settings, people with basic needs may find other players simpler and easier to use, which brings me to a small complaint:

I think the Options could be organized much better. Zoomplayer starts in a Basic Mode and you can toggle to Advanced Mode; even within Advanced Mode things are quite well laid out.

Also, what's the deal with the updates? The homepage program installation file is an EXE, but if you didn't know how to find the Beta updates you wouldn't know they existed. Come on, is Auto updating (with a choice of Beta) that difficult nowadays?

Just for fun, I thought I'd see if I could drop NVidia Pure Video. I don't even know if it's possible but since it's unlikely the video or audio could be noticeably improved I decided it wasn't worth my times. I use my computer with my Sony Bravia HDTV and the Microsoft Media Center combined with remote control is ideal for playing DVD-Video movies from my hard drive; don't get me wrong it does a good job but I'm looking for something my friends and family can easily use too (and some of them are actually afraid of the mouse). (plans for the future involve a smaller, quieter box optimized for High-Def movies with integrated VC-1 and H264 via either on-board AMD or NVidia. I wonder if KMPlayer will go the Media Center route?

Anyway, I've rambled too much, but if you have loads of (of course legally copied) video in many different formats this is perfect for you. Having said that, I still have: VLC, Zoomplayer, WMP11, Media Center and the codec package installed by Zoomplayer (used for everything but VLC and KMPlayer) which has Haali, Ffdshow etc.

Try a bunch of differnt video players and learn about how codecs work, play with your settings and you'll probably find KMPlayer is an integral part of your system. (Now if I can just find a perfect conversion solution for my video to Divx and BD/HD compatible AVC-HD.)

-Jump by keyframe: I like this one. Every jump on time on video is very smooth. Although ZoomPlayer is better on Jump Time, i like that on KMPlayer.

Why would you use this with K-lite? This uses its own built in codecs and other than the QT alternative has no need for a codec pack. It also can play nsv files wich that useless and intrussive codec pack can't help you with.

It may have bugs but I have yet to come across them with regular watching of various video formats. Unlike MPC which is far too buggy to warrant the love it gets.

Haha, it's no wonder some people without having proper knowledge to use any tools are acting like a baby crying peevishly. If you know what directshow means, you'll know the truth that the complaint with relation to quality is of no utility. Blame for your inexperience and ingorance. Maybe you can't make a same filtergraph with the player even it provides the way of selecting external decoders.

There are many alternatives. Just stick to your favorite codec pack. Why have you been hanging around here grumbling incessantly? I don't know well a thing about KLMPC but it probably includes commercial codecs. I don't care about the crap codec pack filled with illegal codecs.

I love how ornery people get over software like this. You'd think this was a political forum or something.

I like how KMPlayer handles codecs internally, but I consistently see much poorer quality with KMPlayer than I do with MPC and KLMCP. Sorry, it's true. I don't care how lovely KMPlayer works on your system--it works poorly on mine.

KMPlayer's interface also annoys me. Don't bother telling me to find a better skin, because the problem is skins in and of themselves.

WOW!, first sure it uses up resources BUT i am using it on an 'ol cumpu'r that in past runs as if win98 blended with winXP [do not ask how]
That stated for ALL IT OFFERS...get it, using the stable version as wanted to test it first and whatever the next beta version has might be better but the stable, for now 20070920 version 2.9.3.1214 is doing well . HERE my list of VID PLAYERS:
    --KMplayer my #1
--GOM my #2 choice [try 1st installing GOM by unTICing its codecs/plugins/filters]if you already have lots of codecs.
--MPC-media player classic v6.4.9.0 by gabest my #3[no longer in production but does have a great dvd/mpeg thumbnailing feature, not chkD if KM has one.]
--5 other player i have tweaked but by themselves too unstable here one just for the curious, my #8 is 'altMP' [alternative media player v1.3.9.210 from 2002AD]
    so KMplayer gets a:
    5 for FULLNESS
    5 for in depth options
    4.5 'cause i am a devil's advocate
    total avgD:4.83 rounded to a 5.
FILFORUM we're gonna need categorized ratings [like ease of use, depth of options, user friendly, etc. so we get 4.6 or 4.9s instead of 4 or 5 this way we get more of a feel for differences.

    @Reverb

Not that much without KMP A/V transform filters. try Alt+F. :) e.g. 700M avi movie only consumes around 10M memory. It depends how the player is configured. With complicated filters and advanced function enabled, it's natural that the resource required to process increases.

Considering all the extensive functions including the vast subtitle support, its way of managing resource is really excellent.

e.g. Initial loading memory of 86.5 MiB AVI (H264) with subtitle
    KMP 13 MiB (Alt+F)
    MPC 34 MiB
Zoom Player 34 MiB (with vsfilter)
    GOM 31 MiB

734 MiB AVI (DivX 5) without subtitle
    KMP 10 MiB
    MPC 36 MiB
    Zoom Player 34 MiB
    GOM 36 MiB

VLC - average image quality, still wont play some formats

GOM - good image quality and plays almost everything

KMPlayer - good image quality plays everthing I've tried INCLUDING nsv files which no other player outside of winamp has played for me. Its lighter on resources than GOM and it comes in a zip(basicly portable) version

There is nothing wrong with how I compared a player with codecs built-in (i.e. KMP) to one without (i.e. MPC). KMP, on certain video types, doesn't look as good to me. KMP is using its internal codecs to decode those files. MPC looks better, and it's using external codecs. So what? Why is it not valid to compare these two--to say that I get better results by not using KMP's internal codec solution? Answer: It is valid to compare them.

And regarding the interfaces, obviously, the codecs make no difference. My personal preference against KMP has nothing to do with it, obviously, so that criticism is valid too.

Regarding K-Lite... I don't care what some people say about it. It works great for me. I'd rather use it than CCCP, which is a simple pack of nonsense designed entirely around ffdshow, for viewing hentai.

echohead's response to me was a non sequitur.

First of all, K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is not "100 MB". I selected the default installation plus a couple extra options, and the total size (installation directory, 38 MB, plus contents added to Windows folder, 7 MB) is 45 MB.

The version of MPC included in KLMCP is currently being developed by someone other than the original author of MPC. Even if it had been totally abandoned, what do I care? It works well for me.

To think that ffdshow is a "placebo" is to have no idea what it does. Before I used KLMCP, I used just MPC and ffdshow (plus RA and QTA), and it worked very well.

My problem with skins isn't resource usage--I never said such a thing. I find KMP harder to work with than MPC, period. I don't care how nice anyone thinks it looks, I don't like it.

Nothing I do makes videos played in KMP look as good on my system as they do in MPC, particularly with WMV files. I have no idea why this is, but it's a fact.

My system is not your system. I am not you. Therefore, absolute statements about what media setup is "best" are no more meaningful than claiming that yellow is the "best color".

the windows classic "skin" in media player classic functions in the same way that any kmplayer skin works...there is no extra resource usage. and the screenshot above isnt the default skin; the default looks much nicer :)

development on MPC stopped a looooong time ago, and this is evident by the fact that so many people install a 100+ MB codec pack just to use it. once installed, kmplayer takes up only 38MB of space and uses only about 1MB more RAM than MPC...and if you consider 4.5MB of RAM to be resource hogging, i suggest you download mplayer (no GUI at all!).

ive been using kmplayer for months, after repeated problems with k-lite. all you have to do is turn off video interlacing and it works perfectly. along with kmplayer i use the small (6MB) MSFN codec pack, real alternative, QT lite, and foobar2000. takes up less space than k-lite and doesnt give me problems.

oh, and ffdshow is the biggest damn placebo ive ever seen. completely useless.

It's well featured, but there are several things I really dislike about it. You shall deal with the heresy that is my opinion.

First, the skins. I looked for a "Windows Classic" type of skin, but there is none. I can't stand skins, and yes, this is a real issue, because it hampers my usability.

Second, for some reason, KMPlayer causes occasional huge spikes in CPU usage. It's so bad that every so often, my system totally freezes for ~5 or 6 seconds at a time because of KMPlayer.exe. It's hard to explain how maddening this is when you're trying to work.

Third, some videos don't look nearly as good as I had become used to while using K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (which includes Media Player Classic).

The only reason I might keep KMPlayer installed is because it has A-B repeat, while MPC does not.

Videolan, blah, it's cheapily slopped together and very amateur looking for how massive an open-source project it is. If you need a good player for unix platforms, just use Mplayer, as for Windows, this is as good as stand-alone players get. This plays incomplete files BETTER than videolan, and is more stable than Videolan in many areas such as rapid-codec switching and quick resolution switching.

I've been recommending this player to everyone I know ever since I tried it. Its way better than VLC and Gomplayer(which I like) because as everyone has stated it plays everything I've thrown at it INCLUDING .nsv files which no other player outside of winamp can. MPC was always buggy for me and it needs codec packs installed.

It comes in a zip version which means no intrusion at all so that argument is wrong.

This player has some really slick looking skins too one being the real default which is not the one pictured here so the lame excuse that this doesn't look good is really a moot point.

The complaint about the name is an even lamer complaint, whats really in a name? It plays everything, its light-weight, very customizable and its never crashed on me

+ High quality video and audio codecs (divx, mpeg2, etc etc etc). You will not need to install almost any codec, just this player.
+ Intuitive and highly customizable (WMP sucks all the way).
    + Great subtitles management
+ Work pretty good on low and high end (best quality on high end and fast render on low end)
+ Complete. Yes, it does everything you may need, without doing things you wont (it can check for updates but it does not phone home unless you want to)

Besides of that, it is a pretty good player, if not the best there is (including other commercial alternatives).

+ It does not need installer (you can get rid of it at any time if you dont like it).
+ It have all the needed codecs out of the box.

This is probably the best video player for
XP I have tried (VLC, GOM, MPC, etc). All
the necessary codecs are built-in which means
no bloated codec packs to install. I do
not have quicktime installed and am able to
play MOV and QT files - none of the above mentioned players can do so without external codecs. Also supports 3GP and MP4 (so do GOM and VLC).

If you are looking for a media player that plays
practically all video files your search is over.
It does seem to consume more resources than other
    players but that's the tradeoff.

It really depends on your needs - if you plan to do any video processing you need to have several codecs installed. I had the K-lite Mega-codec pack, QT alternative and RA alternative installed and noticed that opening ANY media file took almost 30 seconds with WMP and MPC.

With a fresh XP install I only have Directshow and
Nero codecs and media files load instantly (or not at all) with WMP. I then revert to GOM or KMPlayer which plays them fine. If all you want to do is play videos KMPlayer is all you need. Hopefully they will fix the high-def/dual monitor bug but this stand-alone player deserves a 5 nonetheless.

KMPlayer adds several registry entries as do any
codec pack install so that argument is irrelevant.

Has nice features but waaay to intrusive in the registry (I'll take the codec pack anyday) and difficult to uninstall properly.
VLC Portable, MPC, and WMP 11 are doing just fine.

Irrelevant my ass. After uninstalling it leaves like a hundred associations etc, all kinda crap.
VLC portable. Even MPC standalone as an executable are better players.

    Reviewing 2.9.3.1272 Beta (Apr 23, 2007)

I much prefer this to VLC (at least VLC for Windows), and it's an absolutely fantastic backup player for me.

But I still prefer a good DirectShow-compatible player like Zoom Player. Yeah, you have to install codecs, but the end result just performs better and gives me fewer problems. This wasn't always the case; codec packs and even many codecs by themselves in the past just SUCKED and were poorly-written. But the good ones have really, really matured in the last two years or so.

Basically, there are two main reasons I don't use KMPlayer as my main player:

    1. It has problems with proper scaling between two displays. For instance: if I have my Radeon set to display video at full screen on my second monitor while displaying it windowed on the primary (theater mode), it doesn't scale the video on the primary display AT ALL; it's stuck at the original res.

    2. It cannot play back some high-def (especially 1080p stuff) x/h264 content on "slow" computers less than 2.8-3ghz, whereas, for example, the CoreAVC decoder can do so handily. This keeps me from using it on my HTPC, which just isn't fast enough. But to be fair, almost every decoder has this problem, including ffdshow and VLC.

These relative drawbacks aside, it's still the best stand-alone player out there, and it really doesn't get any simpler or easier than this does.

If the scaling problem were to be fixed, I'd give it a 5.

Try it. Reminds me a lot of Zoomplayer Pro which I had to buy.

*I wish people would take the effort to really review. I see a score of "1" with no explanation and a score of "3" from someone who did NOT even try it!

Having said that, I think GOM Player is pretty darn impressive too in fact though I've only used it for 15 minutes I can see it possible as my main player (replacing Zoomplayer Pro which I paid for). It will come down to personal preferences and whether one program does something the other does not.

Of course there are other programs and they can all be installed without conflict. Here's a good link:

@And| look in the upper left for the "English" link.
Also, GOM Player is noce, I use it from time to time, just wish the controls were more customizable, and it can never find DVD subtitles for me.

KMP just keeps getting better, it's very customizable and plays just about anything (it's not capable of playing AVI w/external AC3 audio streams yet (I checked the forum)).

It's my default player, just keep VLC & MPC around for theose (very) rare occasions when KMP won't play a file.

vlc stutters (at least on my pc). Kmplayer is based on a linux version and has nothing to do with winamp (wgaf about a skin?). WinDVD is not free and even if they have a free version it would be like using mediamonkey-LAME (for christ's sake it supports ipods but can't recognize m4a's?). MPC is ok but does not support the playing of multiple files, at least not as far as I can see. Even if it was never updated again it would still be my fav.

Even better than VLC. It can play files that even VLC refuses to play, and Media Player Classic only works decently only IF you install the K-Lite Mega codec pack, otherwise, MPC is useless.

KMPlayer already comes with almost all the codecs already integrated and it can play regular DVDs without problems, and the best of all, it is FREE. While WinDVD costs $60 and does not support a lot of formats.

@molumen: sorry to argue with your about this, but ALMOST all (skinable) players have skins wich resembles winamp one, both classical and enhanced. For your information also Firefox, Opera, Maxthon etc have skins based on winamp - and they are web browsers... so your observation is purely out-of-line.
Moreover, this version comes with a different default skin, niced I think (maybe is not original - I don't know - but is nicer)

If you have the time, give it a try, you'll not find a better player, with so many options.

More powerful than mplayerc & portable as well. Although, for obvious reasons, it is much larger. I have trimmed it down to 26.6mb as opposed to mplayerc's 5.55mb. I am not not sure what it's options have to do with winamp-don't use it-don't need or want to. I rather like the fact that it will automatically play multiple files in folder without intervention. Full capture support as well.

I will adhere with previous users, this is the best multimedia player currently available on windows.

Only 2 other multimedia players come close, JetAudio[though JetAudio is quite more than just multimedia player] and Light Alloy.

Think Of KmPlayer as the best of JetAudio and Light Alloy packed into one program. JetAudio's ability to play everything and Light Alloy's speed and interface.

To cut the story really short: definitely the best player currently available. The complexity of the program can be overwhelming for some users (but you can run it out of the box ---> Video (Advanced) ---> Preset: High Quality - it will use some extra cycles of your CPU but not demand any knowledge), but on the other hand you can regulate every (literally every!!) detail. I am not a fan of skins but CandyGlass is both very aesthetic and functional.

PS Contrary to the name it supports the following languages: Korean, simplified and traditional Chinese, Japanese, English, French and Spanish.

so far I've gotta give this app a 5/5. it's a combination of zoom player, mpc and mplayer, and can even use the mplayer engine. you can tell it which filetypes the mplayer engine should handle. it also has directshow support with great filter control and support for winamp plugins. it's actually amazing how this program integrates with winamp as you can even use a winamp media library with it. there are also advanced controls for postprocessing, sharpen, blur, denoise, dscaler, etc., etc., etc.

so far, the app seems very stable, and there are no language issues either. it is a Korean program, but the English is right on.

on the downside, there may be some GPL issues that this app has violated. but, it's free so at least they're not making money off other people's code.

Since Pandora.tv bought and let KMPlayer stagnate without development, the original developer has continued to develop it with a new company under a different name. You can now find it as Daum PotPlayer. There is currently no official English version, but it has been fan translated. You should find it easily enough via google if the link below is disallowed: http://www.sat-times.com/showthread.php?p=91217
