ViewpointKiller 1.30 Beta  beta

Publisher's Description:

ViewpointKiller does exactly what it's name says: Kills Viewpoint Media Player. Viewpoint Media Player is an adware that displays bandwith eating popup ads in IE and on your desktop. It comes silently with an install of AIM and will be reinstalled by AIM if uninstalled.

ViewpointKiller fixes all of that. It takes off Viewpoint Media Player once and for all.

Latest Changes:

  • Complete and total rewrite of ViewpointKiller. The program is much more stable now
  • Ported program from C to C++
  • Large reduction in program output. Less MessageBoxes and more logfile output
  • The logfile is now more detailed
  • ViewpointKiller now reports in the logfile about registry keys that it could or could not remove
  • Executable size is a tad smaller
  • Edited 'About' dialog just a bit
  • Edited Main Window just a bit
  • Many other small changes

Best to disregard horsecharles' strange review down below. The person who needs to beware the lawsuit is himself calling into point other companies by name etc. with nothing but his own freaky opinions to back himself up. No one said viewpoint was spyware. It's adware. It's annoying. When you try to remove it, it teaches lessons in self control... it's a pain in the a$$ to do and this tool makes that process easy. While it is installed with AOLware, users may find other things broken... I never thought AOL was anything but broken anyway.

HorseCharles:

I don't see how BetaNews would be opening themselves up to a lawsuit by hosting this program on their site.

If you read the program description carefully, I'm sure you'll note the absence of the word spyware - I do agree that Viewpoint Media Player is not spyware. But VMP does pop up with annoying update prompts, and it is a little tricky for the novice user to figure out how to turn them off. VMP can also be difficult to remove. ViewpointKiller simply tries to make this process easier.

The program does indeed work well with AIM Ad Hack. Perhaps you haven't used AIM Ad Hack in quite a while. There seems to be an option to remove Viewpoint in their program, and ViewpointKiller only complements this feature.

But you don't have to use ViewpointKiller. Nothing is forcing you to. In fact, I'll bet you didn't even download the program. But that's your right.

Have a good day.

Regards,
Paul McLain

BetaNews better be careful here-- they're opening themselves up for a lawsuit.

1. Viewpoint Player is NOT spyware. Anyone disputing that needs to answer the following:

A. Name one major security portal, security software, web browser developer / firm in agreement.

B. Viewpoint Killer product info states "it works well w/ Aim Ad Hack"... well, ahem-- ever wonder why that latter-mentioned product, which has been around for eons: why didn't its developers think to also remove Viewpoint? Are they that blind(and as well security experts + insightful users like us the world over) and/or Viewpoint Killer's so Magii-like to see something everyone else missed?

Another reason: some AIM functions stop working without it-- and therein lies most of the rub: guilt by association with AOL(its many documented questionable / dubious previous actions / tactics too numerous to begin mentioning here)! And leads to a major reason often cited to back up inclusion in malware camp:

2. User was not given option to install. Well, Virginia-- the same likely occurred for various needed plugins from adobe-macromedia, ipix, real, apple, ms, isp, etc..... along with tons of other bloatware & crapware also pre-installed on your new system. LOL

The alternative would be to return to yester-year: off the bat one can't read instruction manuals & play some multimedia formats / access many website functionalities. Remember the early days-- having to scour a plethora of websites in order to find necessary plugins(repeated again w/ FF browser, esp. in its early development)?!?

Now, all that having been said, there are legitimately good reasons not to want Viewpoint Player on one's system IIFFFF:

One belongs to the camp that wants alternative plugins / apps-- less bloated and resource-hogging, & perhaps more open-source / less commercial: possibly with no bundled adware & less privacy implications:

from OS to browser to IM to adobe reader to ALL commercial media players(even iTunes can be installed w/ Alternative...and of course, there are alternatives to iTunes itself) one can install counterparts with perhaps 1/10 the resource usage & no need to constantly be connecting to Internet for necessary(& other) functions.

Although Viewpoint Player may be necessary for full functionality at some product sites-- automobile to name a particular category known to avail itself of Viewpoint Player functions...

I mean, if you want to totally avoid adware, then stay away from Betanews-- when the mouse cursor inadvertently touches a highlighted word, it triggers a popup ad....AND attempt to install / access ad cookie...

I did not ask for Viewpoint to be installed on my PC, but it is, behind the scenes with multiple programs. Too many too remember over the years. So this is a nice tool.
