Publisher's Description
Virtual CloneDrive works and behaves just like a physical CD/DVD drive, however it exists only virtually. Image files generated with CloneDVD or CloneCD can be mounted onto a virtual drive from your hard-disk or from a network drive and used in the same manner as inserting them into a normal CD/DVD drive.

great program... i choose it over some of the more fully-featured programs like daemon tools because i rarely ever use some of the alternative image formats like nero or alcohol images... and if i have one that i need to mount, i just convert it with ultraiso. other than that, i like it because it's lightweight, free, and simply does what it's intended to do.
my only complaint is the incredible delay between updates. i mean... look at the changelist for this version (12-2009)... we have waited over six months for "added version info" (isn't this standard practice?) and "updated languages" (none of which i'll ever use). i can't complain too much since it's free, but there's pretty much no progression of development or adding of new features/improvements -- and if they do, they're so insignificant that they're borderline pointless. after 6+ months since the last version i'd hope to see "added extra image format support" or "added these 10 new features". yeah right! i'm going to make a program... then release a new version a year later; and here's gonna be my changelog -> "updated version number from 0.1 to 0.2".
just kidding. i love virtual clonedrive, nevertheless. thank you slysoft for this free tool.

Doesn't support jack s!it, no MDF MDS support, nothing.
Oh Yeah ! It supports opening ISO files, yoohooo! Even your WinRAR
can do that.
Just like all the other crapware from Slysoft, there are MUCH better alternative,
for free, and with respectful support instead of a******s.
Vimes reviewed v5.4.3.5 Beta on Aug 18, 2009
Works exceptionally well with the image types it supports. It is light in its demands an has some nice features which makes its use a pleasure.

yeah, great program.. compact, free, just works.
i switched over to this program when daemon tools started becoming bloated and putting in all that ad crap and trying to trick you into installing their stupid toolbar and set this or that as your home page... i don't want that crap... just install the program i downloaded! plus having to reboot every time the SPTD layer or whatever was updated... (i vaguely remember sometimes having to reboot twice, but i could be wrong)
only small cons about Virtual CloneDrive are that it doesn't support as many filetypes as some of the 'other' virtual drives, but does support the main ones (iso, bin, ccd, etc). the other con i can find is that there really is not much that is configurable other than the amount of drives (up to 15 it looks like), whether or not the icon shows in the tray, save recent list or not, and if you want the virtual drive icon/label to show up differently (to differentiate between virtual/real drives).
but i've never had a single problem out of this program and i've been using it for quite a while. glad to see they added 64 bit support, running it now in win7 x64 and not having any problems at all.
will never go back to daemon, as i never mount video games or have the need for copy protection defeating features, etc. if you need those, then maybe something else is for you, but if you want a program that will take care of mounting your common types of images without a hitch.. this is what you want. don't think it even requires a reboot after you install it!

This was always a great virtual drive but it has gotten even better with context menus and the simple systray icon access even though I make use of neither.
Virtual CloneDrive shouldn't be confused with some of the other programs out there. It's purpose is for mounting images of discs but it focuses on CDs, DVDs, HD-DVDs, and BluRays. There is no emulation for games or anything like that. Virtual CloneDrive also doesn't make use of SPTD as does Daemon Tools & Alcohol which can be problematic.
Virtual CloneDrive simply does exactly as the product description says.

@johnk119
DaemonTools does not load into Windows 7 in any way b/c of the SPTD drivers that it makes use of.
Although I agree with you about DT having the same and more functions, VCD is the only solution I can use on Win7 for the moment.
In addition, DT free versions come bundled with a search program that is at best, a nuisance, and although you can disable installation of said addon, it comes enabled by default.
VCD includes no addons and is 100% free - thus, for all the reasons noted above this software deserves a much better rating than you are giving it,
johnk119 reviewed v5.4.2.8 Beta on Apr 8, 2009

This is the best. Much easier and "just work" compared to Daemon Tools. You don't have to restart the computer after install. Thats good.

Are there any negative things to this when compared to the malware Daemon Tools ?

This thing rocks. Hands down easy to use and works as advertised. These are the types of things that should be built in to Windows.

Great VirtualDrive
Easy Install
Realy simple, just double click on the dvd/cd image file and it will automaticly mount it, Works with BD backup .isos you create from you blu-ray discs,
Plays BD better than from harddrive with TotalMedia Theatre and PowerDVD
Finaly support for Vista/XP 64-bit to!
Best of all no freaking stealware/adware/spyware!
Metshrine reviewed v5.4.1.1 on Oct 18, 2008
The best in its class. Daemon tools might support some advanced features, but if all you need is to mount a file, this will do just that with none of the ad-ware.
5/5

I'd hardly consider the program worth a 1 rating. You are entitled to your opinion, of course, but I just find that one a bit extreme. It supports about 8 formats and doesn't mess with the proprietary ones.
The program does exactly what it says and works beautifully under Vista x64.
philosopher_dog reviewed v5.4.1.1 on Oct 17, 2008
Interesting program with potential. But it has limited support iso's. MagicDisk is much better in my view http://www.magiciso.com/...-magicdisc-overview.htm . Also, if you're running xp MS has a free and very lightweight virtual drive; I'm sure it's as good as slysoft's piece. Check out http://www.informit.com/...x?p=406936&seqNum=2 for more info.

This virtual drive software is great. It's amazingly simple in appearance and usage. What makes it special is how well works with AnyDVD [HD], PowerDVD, WinDVD, and TotalMedia Theatre in playing mounted SD DVD, HD-DVD, and BluRay images. It also doesn't cause read speed problems with HD-DVD/BluRay drives like the Secure Duplex SPTD driver which is used by Daemon Tools and Alcohol.
EarlyMorningHours reviewed v5.4.1.0 Beta on Oct 14, 2008
When I saw this version come out today, something came over me where I had decided that I just about had enough of DT. So I uninstalled that and gave this a try. So far it seems to work just fine while being much less in your face about things. It's a keeper.
