VirtualDub is a video capture / processing utility for 32-bit Windows platforms, licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters. It is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images.

Since there is no review for this program in last 2 years, I thought I should write a thing or two about it.
1st: This is all you need for transcribing and encoding your videos.
2nd: you can put it and run it from wherever you want. No installation needed. No registry entries. It's simple to learn and work with it.
I use it for about a decade now, and all I can say is - that thing is one of the first things I install, or rather "install" on my computer. Fast as hell. GUI is native to windows, no artificial hardware bull, and that contributes to its speed, too. One of the most useful programs in Windows ever, beside CCleaner, Defraggler, XNView and Firefox.
This man deserves a medal! :) [and FCChandler too, for making all the wonderful plugins for it]
Cheers! Thank you so much for making such a great program for linear editing and encoding!

AviDemux will open vbr audio avi's and then can save them to a cbr audio vdub-compliant avi in minutes (~30 min. for 700 MB depending on how fast your pc is). It will also append 2 vbr audio avi's to one almost as fast as you can copy the files.
Reviewing 1.9.4 (Jul 28, 2009)
Recently needed to rotate a video 90 degrees that was captured with the camera on it's side. Common problem with cameras that can record video. I used an older rev of this and rotated the video in a very short time. In fact, it ran so fast on an older CPU that I really didn't think it worked, but it worked great. I was impressed with the speed and ease of use. Couldn't have been simpler. I'm glad to read the post before me because I've been thinking about doing some Xvid transcoding to get higher compression ratios, and wanted a simple app. I think the VirtualDub author is very conservative in his description. There are a lot of plugins for this, some of which will handle MPEG2.
Reviewing 1.9.1 Experimental (Mar 30, 2009)
I really like this little program. I don't use all the functions but it is pretty great at what it does.
I run it right out of the folder from the UNZIP - don't have to install it formally. I create a shortcut for it via the right-mouse click menu and put that shortcut on my Dock Bar program.
I can download the latest XviD CODEC if I wish (I like it better than DivX) and install that and it becomes available from the VIDEO > COMPRESSION dialog.
So, when I make FRAPS captures of my video game sessions and then save those, I can open up VirtualDub, load that game video (AVI) and go to the VIDEO > FILTERS dialog and then ADD the RESIZE filter, set it at 640x480, SAVE it then click the OK button.
Then all I have to do is go to the FILE menu and choose SAVE AS AVI, type in a name and I get a compressed but great looking video of my game recording but in 640x480 instead of 1600x1200 or 1280x960, and then I can upload that video to YouTube or a file download hosting site and people can view the video.
It's great when you are playing different games and your buds all want to check out what the games play like. I can play PainKiller Black Edition and Unreal Tournament 2004, they can play C & C 3 Tiberium Wars, UT 3, L4Dead and Gears of War and I can watch the videos of how those games play. It's just awesome that it's so easy to do and it doesn't cost ANYTHING at all! 100% Free!
So even if I just use one or two main features and make the video, that's still just fine. I'm getting my monies worth totally!
Reviewing 1.9.0 Experimental (Jan 5, 2009)

AviSynth reads anything that can be read on you PC though DirectShow (thus with original QuickTime or QT Lite, AviSynth can read QuickTime files). By completing this transitive relation, Vdub reads QuickTime.

Brilliant... from Avery Lee's page:
***
1.7.0 is the new experimental version, and the first officially released version of VirtualDub to be built with Visual Studio 2005 Professional. In addition to the fixes that are in 1.6.17, it contains a number of new features, most notably smart rendering and filter blending. Smart rendering allows frame-precise editing of compressed video by only recompressing small sections around edits, with the rest of the frames copied in Direct mode. Filter blending allows opacity curves to be applied to individual filters, allowing a filter's effect to be applied only to certain frames. When both smart rendering and filter blending are enabled, the filter chain is skipped entirely when all filters are at opacity zero (transparent). This allows filtering only a portion of a video stream, and some scenarios that formerly required multiple passes and manual joins can now be done in a single pass. Both of these features work with existing video codecs and filters, and are explained in detail in the help. 1.7.0 also adds support for writing PNG files, importing MayaIFF image sequences, reading/writing Wave64 for WAV files larger than 2GB, and reading/writing Adobe Filmstrip sequences for rotoscoping in Photoshop.

Awesome software, always being improved.
This program is on of the best I have worked with.
Anyone using this app be sure to look for the CoreAVC encoder sometime (prob. before spring). It will be a huge competitor to Nero and x264 because it will be alot faster (the decoder[AVC] is beta, and is already the fastest available -free and non-free), and the development is superfast (so constant improvements at hyperspeed (faster than x264 development). I would definately keep my eye on this thread on Doom9 for the latest updates: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=104277
Virtualdub Rocks! Especially after you get the hang of it! The only bad thing is that DVD and MP4 support doesn't seem to be in their schedule. It still works great for Capturing Video from my Camcorder - and reducing the size considerably with maximum support for whatever codec I choose. And there are awesome plugins everywhere for this app!
Reviewing 1.6.12 Build 24259 (Jan 5, 2006)
I use this mainly to join avi files such as two 700MB Divx/xvid movie halves.
1)Open the avi file
2)choose "append" then browse to the second file
3)save the new avi
4)check the last half to ensure sound synching then delete the originals if you wish
I think if you have more than two parts (with the same name, ie starwars1.avi,starwars2.avi... it will join ALL of the remaining files in that folder once you append the second file. If you want different, either move the files or temporarily rename the ones you want joined.
Note that some files have audio issues that prevent joining, but this can still be fixed. You need to extract the video with NO audio, and then just the audio as a wav file and join everything together again and recode the audio if needed. Usually this produces a big lag which needs to be fixed (in virtualdub) so I don't even bother joining.

Five hours? I would imagine you are pretty much alone when it comes to files of that size around here. The target audience for this program just want to rip a DVD and edit a track out of it or edit 90 minutes of camcorder footage then compress the thing to usually DivX or Xvid. It does what it is intended to do quite well and it's free. That sounds like a five to me.

I bet that none of you edited 5+ hour videos so I'm sure you don't realize how handy Premiere is..
Reviewing 1.6.6.23486 Experimental (May 31, 2005)
Since this program is well established as one of the best if not THE best at what it does, I only have one request (for now): make it easier to save a sequence of frames as images. The current program only allows saving every frame in the entire video rather than just a clip, so I have to save the selection I want as a separate clip before I can extract screencaps.
Still, this program is the best at everything it advertises that it can do. And I'm glad Avery Lee hasn't lost interest and keeps making improvements to an already excellent program.

This combined with the Angel Potion DiVX High motion codec and the radium mp3 codecs can give you 5+ hours of decent 425 KBS quality video in under 2 gigabytes of storage. Properly compressed, you can get 3 hours of video in 650Mb !!! I do it everynight for the Tech-TV video feed for viewing at work the next day. In addition to capture, I use it to compress audio and edit my ripped DVDs in DiVX. I have run into some stability problems that require a reboot of the system sometimes but it is well worth it.
