WinRAR 3.80 Beta 2 beta
Publisher's Description:
RAR is a general purpose archiving and compression program competing with/replacing programs such as PKZip, ARJ, and others. It offers significantly improved compression ratios, easier use and a cheaper price as well as supporting long file names, disk spanning, and self-extracting file creation.
You can also try RAR for Mac OS X, Linux, or FreeBSD.

I recognize WinRAR (stable versions, anyway) as a solid, reliable archiver, but I think it's high time to expand archive creation support beyond mere ZIP and RAR files. WinRAR can create just those two formats, and that's it. And for ZIP files, it supports 128-bit AES, but not 256-bit. The point isn't whether or not 128-bit is enough; the point is keeping pace with technology, and maintaining compatibility with other archivers. Can any WinRAR fans HONESTLY tell me there's some excuse to NOT support the creation of 7Z archives? Of course not.

WinRAR is arguably one of the best programs out there in its class (I use it as my main).
However, it lost 2 stars for the following reasons:
1 star - developer refuses to give the option of for the user to run the program portable (read: all settings in .ini file instead of registry)
1 star lost - Does NOT work with .001 files. I'm talking about HJSplit/Mastersplitter .001 files. There's really NO excuse for this. 7Zip is 100% compatible but WinRAR is lagging behind.
If they fix these two issues, and increase the dictionary size, the program will be near-perfect!

All we need now is to increase the dictionary size to at least 64MB and it will kill 7zip.
Until then, I'll use 7zip. But WinRAR is still the best for most users.
7zip are for those who really knows what they're doing.

@picsoetje - You are missing the whole point. Compression software's primary job is to compress data and not provide eye-candy.
There is nothing that comes close to RAR in compressing data.
Go look for eye-candy elsewhere.

Yes is an ugly interface, so you can go to:

"...as soon as it provides a user interface like ZIP-Folders that comes with Windows XP or Vista"
I think your wish is coming!
