Yes, they ask yearly payment for upgrades. But how do you expect to get updates (and upgrades) with latests improvments ?! Winzip does its job perfectly and nice interface ... Though it still don't has one feature like Winrar:
try to span 4gb file (1gb each part for example) and make first file executable.
Winrar does it very nice, Winzip - don't. Only because i give 4.5 stars from 5.
Anyway, it is very nice archiver ...

I, too used Winzip since Windows 3.1 until they reneged on Nico Mak's promise and started to charge for upgrades. WinRAR is better all round.

WinZip stopped being interesting the day I figured out RAR has a better compression and a lifelong license that you buy once, not yearly.
WinRar on my pc, RAR commandline (free) every else.
Reviewing 12.1 Build 8519 (Jun 15, 2009)
I bought WinZip when it first came out, I think around Windows 3.1, although I'm not exactly sure, And they kept giving me free upgrades until, all of a sudden, with the latest upgrade, they said I had to pay the full price, no discount.
I might have done so if they had offered me a discount, but no. Full price or nothing.
So, I didn't upgrade. The previous version still worked. And soon enough, I didn't need it any more. So, what's the point in using WinZip?
