Ok, now that I see that noone here knows anything about sound...WMA8 is a lot better than MP3 will ever be. Secondly, WM7.1 and WM8 are the exact same codecs, WM8 is for XP and the 7.1 is for the rest of Windows platforms before XP.
This conversion utility would excell if there was a help utility or printable help file that show what features they have included with it and if it were available in a gui format would help as well. One more thing I would like to see is the ability to make my DVD's to WMV so I can play them on my laptop, which doesn't have a DVD player but does have CD-RW and WMP.
If anyone knows of a way to do this kind of conversion without a million different utilities or steps please let me know. I currently use DVDx to make (S)VCDs but I would rather them be WMA's which is a much better format and smaller file than (S)VCD even. I have one that refuses to let me make a decent VCD out of it and I want to convert it straight into WMV and see if that would be better, but, I cannot find a utility to let me do this, if anyone knows of one email: Greybird67@bellsouth.net and let me know...
Other than that this program roxx!!!

i am new to the world of compression and codecs etc but this RULES! i just got it and started using it to compress some .wav files using
-input song.wav -output song_192.wav -a_setting 192_48_2
and it sounded so nice! i also tried it at 64_44_2 and it was like my 128kbps MP3 version of it.
i am going to start on the video now although i am not that good i really want to learn this as someone else said it was very very exciting technology. Microsoft really have kicked a** here it is amazing well done MS Team!
PS does anyone know of a website i can go to so i can learn some more about how to use this codec to its full advantage?

Really? You dont hear the poor frequency response especially in high range? I'm not knocking wma8 in any way, it's leaps and bounds. But my ears still tell me mp3 is superior. That is not the goal of WMA though, it does wonders for streaming media.

WMA8 is MUCH better than mp3.... 96kb for WMA8 sounds better than 128kb MP3... in fact i sounds more like 160kb MP3...

For audio only, audiograbber works with the string: -input %s -output %d -a_setting 96_44_2
The defailt 64_44_2 does not sound as good as a 128 .mp3 (serious loss of high end) but this rate will be great for streaming near CD quality at low bandwidth. The 96_44_2 sounds as good as a 128 .mp3 (or better) at 1/2 the file size.
