XP Codec Pack is Useful for the Everyday users who just want to play around with Vids & Audio & couldn't care less about AR's, BitRates, Quality etc. Maybe even to use WinMovieMaker to it's full Extent. For the Guys who drop into this category then XP-Cpack is worthy of 5*

If you trawl the Web for Anything & Everything or want to get into Serious ripping, transcoding, Re-Encoding etc. Cover your Asses with one of the Big-Boy Codec packs. You two are being closed-minded zealots regarding this codec pack. It is not a "kitchen sink" pack, and in fact has little a sane person would find objectionable. Not only that, you can opt not to install certain items.

All you really need are DivX, XviD & AC-3 Audio...
it is highly unlikely that you will need anything else..not including Real or QT.

IMNSHO, codec packs are a complete and often dangerous waste of time.

Pick the codecs you absolutely need, download the latest versions and install them. Upgrade them only if absolutely necessary - don't jump just because a new version comes out. Your system will run cleaner and give far less grief.

I personally have been using that methodology for years (in my case it's a grand total of 6 codecs, not all of them the latest and greatest versions) and I've never been sorry.

I have however seen the results of using the codec packs and their scattershot approach on the machines of various friends and associates. Many have come crying to me to fix various foibles caused by this type of crap and my advice is always the same:

Reformat and start over.

Apply some intelligent and constructive thought to your particular situation and you won't need rubbish like this.

ONE star for a genre (Cidec Packs) that is FAR more trouble than it's ever been worth.

Caused mpeg and wmv problems. Worst part was when I uninstalled, it made things worse. This is, with 2.06, a quagmire.

I continue to use and appreciate this pack. Seems to really work well with Xvid encoded tv shows and such, so perhaps that's why I stick with it. Just gets the job done.

you are making false accusations !!!

the other pack you are talking about - X Codec Pack - is in fact older than XP Codec Pack. you can check this info. nobody is trying to copy the name and/or logo or whatever.
but if you are saying that one of them is copying the other one, it is not X Codec Pack. and trust me because i am one of the developers of X Codec Pack. i chat with the developers of XP Codec Pack and nobody, i repeat, NOBODY is trying to copy the other one.

It's a good program. Make sure you can always uninstall your codecs or you may be in trouble.

My only issue is that you can't uninstall individual codecs. You have to remove the entire program, uncheck the codec you don't want while reinstalling the pack.

That's maybe a minor issue as it doesn't take too long. You can go into MPC's View-Options-Formats, or right-click the media file and choose open with-then check always while browsing to this program in the Program Files-xp codec pack-mpc directory (options is easier).

Overall, it's a great choice of codecs and perfect for individuals who are new to this area. I recommend installing VLC Media Player as well.

Not bad, but you'll still need both "Alternative" codecs. Might as well get the K-Lite Mega and just de-select everything you don't want or need.

K-Lite is completely customized installs, you coose what you what/need.

Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative cannot be beat .. Check em out, a must for those who need support for mov and rm without the bloat of the official stuff :)

Well, some things to be cleared up: codec packs are not any good if installed without customization and extra care. I use codec packs on fresh installs because I have all the codecs I need included in one large installer and don't need to download everything separately. I only install those ones which I _do_ _really_ need and never let any codec pack be installed on default settings. Ever.

Every tool can be useful, if used appropriately.

This codec pack is OK, certainly not as feature complete as KLiteCodecPack though, which is my personal choice. KLite offers a number of different downloads depening on your requirements.

I would recommend KLite over this codec pack, but this codec pack does what it claims to with no problems I could see.

This pack isn't bad and isn't bloated at all but even if you use Gspot as other posters have recommended your still going to need the codec.

This pack ensures you have what is needed accept for quicktime and Realplayer codecs.

for your knowledge: you need some codecs to play those built-in formats supported by MediaPlayer Classic.
if you know what you need, you don't have to install all codecs (almost all codec packs let you unselect uneeded codecs or filters). if you're a smart a$$ don't install codec packs go and find yourself the codecs you need but don't blame packs if you don't know to use them!

I think this is my favorite so far because it is lean and not too invasive. I use this along with Real Player Alternative and Quick Time Alternative to pretty much round things out.
