There are two kind of converters out there, indeed:
Free and open-source ones ("lite" and "free" versions from producers of paid converters do not fall into this category), and shareware ones.
I see absolutely no reason to use any of the shareware converters, out there. There plenty of free ones to choose from. If you do not know where to spend your money, and for some strange reason want to buy a paid converter, I suggest you do donate that money to some charity instead.

There are two kind of converters out there :-
The high speedconverters with often errors like McFunsoft Videoconvert Master and WinAvi and the low speed converters with allways good converting like BPS Video Converter&decompiler and AVS Video Tools. Cannot say if Xilisoft doiing a good job but I am not to certain about that. You make your own decision

The newer versions of Xilisoft have been working fine for me - as kk100 mentions, its just a matter of installing the codecs, although I wouldn't recommend installing a codec pack. Just install the codecs of the formats you're converting and you'll be fine.
QuickTime Alternative Lite for QuickTime/ipod stuff and RealAlternative Lite for Real media does the trick in most cases.
-1 because the software still isn't user friendly. Should definately give a more verbose error message than simply saying "Failed". What would be even better is if Xilisoft provided a link to download the appropriate codec, like GOM Player does.

For those who got a failure to convert after installing this software, they may just lack the codecs. It can be solved after installing this codec pack: http://www.free-codecs.c...d/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm . Also, some computers work slower with this software than others. My older computer can actually convert the same file faster than my newer but cheaper computer. This software may not be the best out there, but it is handy and easy to use.
