doPDF installs itself as a virtual PDF printer driver so after a successful installation will appear in your Printers and Faxes list. To convert to PDF, you just have to print the document to doPDF, the free pdf converter. Open a document (with Microsoft Word, WordPad, NotePad or any other software), choose Print and select doPDF. It will ask you where to save the PDF file and when finished, the PDF file will be automatically opened in your default PDF viewer.

Every time this program gets a new version it does not get updated properly and in a timely manner, as you keep getting the previous older version.
It is definitely a big problem with Softalnd, the developer of doPDF, as they have big issues updating their servers to allow users to download the new version. After a new version is announced users keep downloading the older version.
Shame on this site, FileForum for not testing and confirming that the new version is actually available for download.
Shame on FileForum, BetaNews and Softland.

    IT FAILED!!

The first PDF file I tried to create was a .MHT (MHTML Web archive file) and it failed!!

The error message was "There is no application associated with the given file name extension"

All Windows versions have the .MHT extension associated with Internet Explorer by default and IE will print it ok--it's only a web page as a single file. If you use another browser that supports the file type (eg Opera) then the extension is automatically associated with it.

The .MHT extension on my machine is associated with the browser and works perfectly.

I'm really getting jacked off by so-called 'free' software that's simply never been tested. Otherwise, how come I found the bug on the very first file I tried it on?

It really is hard to believe the developer could be so slack as not to check the normal Windows extensions that one can print from. But it happens....

    >:-o

Finally this really isn't 'free' software but nobble-ware. Yuh have to buy the full version.

    It's already uninstalled.

Versions 6-2-296 all the way to this latest version have a problem with some fonts, one such that seems very obvious on Windows XP 32 bit is the "Modern" font. Open Office 3.2.1 Writer built-in PDF export does a much better job, and is also more space efficient. It's still a decent program, but version 6 is still leaner without any adware type of clutter on the interface than version 7. Version 6-2-296 does properly process the "Marlett" font in terms of spacing, whereas none of the version 7 series does not. Version 6-2-296 files may be larger than version 7 releases, but it works correctly more often than those smaller version 7 releases. I'd recommend trying both and comparing the end results yourself when embedding fonts.

So wait...are betanews ratings intended to rate the size of the application and not the functionality now? Dudeboyz, stop being a troll and rate how the application acts. When features are added, size often goes up. Not everyone is worried about operating things on their system containing 256MB of ram. There is no use having 4GB of ram if you are just leaving it sitting there.

I am currently running Version 6.2 build 296 and am able to print to PDF from both Firefox 3 and IE 7 (XP SP3). The output file matches my print preview. It is very basic though and has very few options in the output dialogue. It is very small however (under 2 MB) and works well. There are a few other free PDF printers out there with more options but most require installing Ghostscript (such as Bullzip.com PDF) to work properly. If you're looking for a way to print PDF files from your apps and want something free and non-bloated this is what you need.

4 out of 5 since the only caveat is the lack of options.

    First impression:

There is one thing about this app that seems to be functioning well and I noticed it right away. It handles FONT EMBEDDING in a way that seems to be not only incredibly easy but actually seems to work as I would have hoped / expected such a feature to work.

It feels bone-stock simple compared to the expensive and complex Acrobat suite from Adobe. The option is right there. The interface is not intimidating or complicated at all. You check the box, create the file, load it on another machine that does not have those fonts on it, and if the fonts you chose to embed allow for that function to be used, this application seems to be able to do it with little or no problems that I can discern.

This ia very nice development. Since this feature looks so promising, I'm going to start giving this application a higher priority on my list of apps that I work with and test. A solid 4 stars for now, and I'll see if I can put this through a bit of a workout so I can provide a more thorough bit of feedback later.

    Nice work.

Fix: On Vista machines that have UAC enabled, printing from IE7 (in protected mode) returned a "Permission denied" error when trying to save the PDF file locally. Upon installation doPDF now sets permission to write to local files.
Update: Do not check open file when using doPDF on Vista and printing from IE

Fix: There was a page layout bug when printing a word document from the free TextMaker Viewer program - if the document contained a succession of portrait and landscape pages, the PDF would contain only portrait pages - the new build converts them correctly.

Displays a plug for the author's commercial product novaPDF (which does work on terminal servers) but does not stamp anything on the PDF files. Features are fairly comparable to the many GhostScript/Redmond-based open source print drivers like PrimoPDF, FreePDF, CutePDF, and PDFCreator. I wouldn't switch to doPDF if you're already using one of those and are happy with it, but doPDF is tighter and faster than any alternatives I've tried. Co-exists nicely with others and uninstalls cleanly, so trying is low risk.

Like all print driver solutions, PDFs created from web pages or other documents containing links don't retain their links (except to the extent that you use a reader which adds them by parsing text for raw URLs), so I'm still looking for something to replace Adobe's PDFMaker for IE and Office apps. Sadly, not even Adobe has been able to improve on it, as it remains unchanged in Acrobat 8 despite the brochures making it seem new.

    Problem:

    1) It does NOT prompt user to replace an existing file - it just REPLACE the file without asking!

    2) Test printing 2 pages from a 5 page document - but it generated PDF from the WHOLE document!

    3) It's S-L-O-W - took 6 minutes or more to generate a PDF file that CutePDF took less than a minute.

    4) PDF file size is nearly double that if CutePDF is used.

    5) Uninstall doesn't remove all files and registry

Yes, it's free, doesn't require Ghostscript installation, and it appears to take less hard drive space.... BUT with problems like these it's back to CutePDF + Ghostscript 8.54 for me - and a rating of 1.

Nice, freeware, and no ghostcript required.

Does exactly what it says on the box. Been looking for a free pdf creator without the need to use Ghostscript. This is the one!

Actually OpenOffice 3.2.1 built-in pdf converter already handles every document I created, I'd like to use DoPDF while some applications without or weak in pdf conversion.

As some noticed version 7.1 has a slight increase in size compared to version 6.x, meaning it's now around 3.8MB (still a very small setup imo). Anyway the main two reasons for this increase in size are:
    - we've added that start-up page because many users didn't know how to create pdf files by printing; this was possible only using a separate exe which alone is about 2.5mb (uncompressed)
    - to keep the compatibility for Windows 2000 we had to distribute a dll that adds up for about 0.8mb too

On a different note, the newly released version (7.1) supports now silent installation parameters, a much requested feature (mainly among enterprise users).

    Pheno

I use PDFCreator and am thinking about trying doPDF (both are freeware and for this I'm very appreciative) -- although I'm not sure if it's worth the time to try. From first glance, it seems like the two software have all the same features. For those who have tried both, is there a difference?

I'm thinking there must be for doPDF to be a fileforum pick -- or is it an automatized pick due to the 0.1 rating difference between doPDF and PDFCreator?

Actually the version is 6.2.287 and not 6.1.287. The major improvement in this version is the addition of Font embedding.

doPDF 6.1 build 286 was released. Update is not necessary, as this build only has some minor specific fixes.
    What's changed in doPDF 6.1.286:

    - Update: Added silent cancel printing - in previous versions, when the Cancel button was pressed from the Save As dialog, it would reload it and return an error when cancelling again - now this behavior is corrected and the Save As dialog is shown once.
    - Update: The character & is now allowed in the filename (was replaced in previous versions with underscore)
    - Update: Minor language file changes for Romanian, Russian, Slovenian and Ukrainian

    ---------------------------------------------

Not sure if it's fixed in this version, but with previous version, when I create a PDF on the Newegg.com invoice, I get some magenta borders everywhere.
