mIRC is a full featured Internet Relay Chat client for Windows that can be used to communicate, share, play or work with others on IRC networks around the world, either in multi-user group conferences or in one-to-one private discussions. It has a clean, practical interface that is highly configurable and supports features such as buddy lists, file transfers, multi-server connections, SSL encryption, proxy support, UTF-8 display, customizable sounds, spoken messages, tray notifications, message logging, and more. It also has a powerful scripting language that can be used both to automate mIRC and to create applications that perform a wide range of functions from network communications to playing games.
Yes - 30 day timeout
Yes
- Added DPI awareness support to prevent Windows applying display scaling to mIRC. This should resolve the blurry interface and font issues when non-standard DPI display settings are used, such as on tablets
- Added MONITOR protocol support for the notify list. mIRC will use MONITOR automatically if it is listed in the server's 005 numeric
- Improved the way the window buffer is trimmed when it reaches the maximum number of lines set in the Options/Other dialog
- Fixed SSL caching bug that may have required repeat acceptance of certficates on some networks. The cache now stores the IP address of the associated certificate
- Fixed editbox buffer bug that was not storing an edited line if you pressed the up key
- Fixed incremental search not working correctly in channels list window

Very nice IRC client. Very flexible and has some nice scripting features. Also very low resource utilization and has options for beginners and advanced users. You really can't beat mIRC. It's one of the originals and still the best.

The best IRC client for windows, hands down.
HydraIRC is the next best (free) solution.
Reviewing 7.22 (Nov 21, 2011)
People have tried, but you just can't beat mIRC. Yes, it isn't 100% free, in that after expiring you'll have to deal with a timed nag dialog. However, people need to realize the time, money, and energy it takes to develop and maintain quality software. Sure, there are some lucky people who are already rich (or in college maybe) and can give stuff away for free (without bundles), but for the rest of us -- better to charge for software than to stoop to using bundles. Kudos to the author of mIRC for doing just that (charging for his software instead of stooping to bundles or other 'tricks').

Absolutely timeless piece of software that keeps getting better and better still! Worth every single penny.

Wow, thanks, FixxxxxxxxxXXXxxxxxxxxer, I had no idea that mIRC wasn't the same as AOL instant messenger. Good to know.
Apparently, you didn't understand my post. The problem isn't IRC, it's mIRC. The interface sucks. I'm talking about Apply buttons that function as OK buttons. I'm talking about dialogs that have Apply buttons and OK buttons, and no apparent rhyme or reason for that, and various other assorted bits of nonsense.
I'm sorry that I am not Apply with applications that have ridiculous GUI design elements. Oops, I mean "I'm sorry that I am not OK", not Apply. Sometimes it gets confusing doesn't it?
I'm not saying that IRC is too inherently complex, or that I want it to be an IM client. But thanks.
Of course, by not rating mIRC with a 5, it must mean I work for (or am friends with, or am) a developer of a competing shareware client. Def.
Reviewing 7.14 (Nov 2, 2010)
Plumber, IRC is not an IM program. This is not your traditional OMG LOL ROFL aol instant messenger. Just because you do not understand the purpose or function of IRC, does not mean others do not.
mIRC is the EASIEST to use out of the box. It supports far more features than any client and can be scripted to do just about anything. Out of the box, the average user will be just fine. You have to learn a few commands to get on your way:
/join
/part
/quit
/msg (which sends to a specific user, and not all of the other "miscreants", as you so put it.
/server
Those 5 commands will give you success on IRC. That said, IRC is not meant for your average Joe home-user. It requires more interaction that the AOL instant messenger you are accustomed to. It actually requires a very basic understanding of typing a few commands. And at that point, if you want to delve further, you can. You can make mirc do whatever you want.
Reviewing 7.14 (Oct 15, 2010)
It's OK if you live in Mom's basement and spend 17 hours a day on IRC and therefore know all the ins and outs of it. But if you want actual user friendliness and a decent interface, not to mention documentation (what's that?), you're out of luck.
The people who think mIRC is perfect have no idea what "quality" means. It doesn't just mean "Hit Enter and the message gets viewed by all the other miscreants".

Reviewing 7.06 Beta (Jun 30, 2010)
Year after year mIRC is continuing to kick some serious ass, imho. Version 7 brings Unocode support, but I can't use it personally. Why? Because v7 does not "understand" what v6 clients are saying (in languages other than English). Meaning if I use v7 client in a channel where people speak in laguages other than English (japanese, french, german, russian, etc.) all messages from those people will be visible as gibberish. I don't see how can such a view work. Because v7 will not get adopted and become widely used unless ALL people start using it at the same time. Weird..
But well, anyhow, it's still #1 client and nothing comes even close to it.

2.Updated to PCRE v7.8 and OpenSSL 0.9.8i libraries.
3.Added Script Editor option to disable line numbers.
4.Fixed /toolbar bug where setting a bitmap for a default button was

For starters, the mentality of people like Scary Guy is exactly the reason why parents like his shouldn't breed. He hasn't even tried the recent versions of the programs but gives it a 1 based on the perceptions of his obviously incredibly small brain.
Now, mIRC, like most other programs out there is not the perfect program; but it is a damned good one for what it does. It's all a matter of preference in the IRC world, and if another program is your preference then you're not likely to give this one a 5. Your opinion can't be blamed, but if you rate the program for its ease of use, flexibility, functionality, low cost, and constant efforts at getting better, then you can't give it any less than a 5 for its efforts.

For the longest time I have been a pirch user (just liked its simplicity and look) and stayed away from mIRC. More recently I used x-chat and still do quite a bit, but I use mIRC a lot now as well.
Its improved look is helpful as I thought it always looked dated before.
For my needs it isn't perfect but it does the job well and well pirch is no longer in development and a program spun off from it appears dead VortecIRC. So mIRC is one of the best choices for IRC.

Works great, love it.
There are two safety nets for your settings, (1) is an option during setup on what settings you want to overwrite and (2) is it backs up your previous settings by default no matter what you select. Not sure how people are getting their setting overwritten unless they are just blindly pressing Next > Next > Next during install.
Reviewing 6.21 (Nov 27, 2006)
Still doesnt have proper multiserver support. When I mean proper, I mean the _GUI_ supports it. Mirc should, on startup, be able to be configured to connect to as many servers as I want VIA THE GUI ALONE. It doesnt do this out of the box.
I realize fully there are ghetto-style perform things you can _MANUALLY_ type in. or do /server -m, but come on. Thats a hack, not the full support of multi-servers a modern irc client should have.
The installer overwrote all my settings as well. Be careful when upgrading from previous versions.

Reviewing 6.2 (Jul 30, 2006)
The scriptability of mIRC is amazing, thanks in some part to third-party DLLs which can be used to extend the scripting functionality.
The one major flaw is that the script functionality was built on top of a rickity bridge as opposed to a solid foundation.
Whitespace is automatically stripped out (thus there is no binary safeness. Binary variables are a poor attempt to work around this, as they get wiped after a script stops running, making them useless for my needs), there is no way to delimit strings from other text, only direct array support is in string tokens, other methods require $eval hacks.
Also there is no "for" construct. There is "while" and "if" but no "for". This has proven annoying.
There needs to be an IRC client with LUA or some other C-based scripting language, now that would be FTW.
Even still, it's surprising how much you can do with mIRC.
I attempted to make a treebar-like thing myself, but Khaled's is significantly better, thanks to the advantage of not having to make it in mIRCscript. :p
Reviewing 6.2 (Jul 30, 2006)
Almost perfect IRC client... Straight forward, simple, nicely organized scripting module.
I don't know what some people are thinking here...
If you don't know what IRC is or have only heard of it, you shouldn't be rating this.
mIRC was designed to take full advantage of IRC protocol. And it's almost flawless at this. You shouldn't be rating this app solely based on your personal problem with the technology it was designed for, imo.
Reviewing 6.2 (Jul 30, 2006)
Multi Server support as in?
/server -m irc.whatever.com?
that will allow you to connect to multiple servers within the same client.
Reviewing 6.2 (Jul 30, 2006)
This version has some nice _small_ changes, and I'm not sure it really warrants a major version number change. This probably should have been mirc 6.18.
A good, and universally accepted mirc program no doubt, with tons of scripts/addons available.
It STILL doesnt have native multi-server support which really sucks. For this, I must give it a 4.
Reviewing 6.2 (Jul 30, 2006)
It was a lot of work to make this IRC client...But all for nothing. mIRC is just too old and awkward (and defective by design) to learn new tricks.
Very stable though, and very fast (usually - only without scripts).

Reviewing 6.17 (Feb 18, 2006)
Still one of the best and versatile IRC clients to date. Glad to see an update after so long. The GUI may lack according to some, but the application isn't about looks as much as it is functionality. It's simple, yet with the proper know-how can be quite complicated, and several things can be modified or created via its scripting language. The author lets the user decide how they'd like to shape the client. The default package is simply the basic elements. For those who want a better GUI, I'd suggest HydraIRC or Klient. Apparently people like Blackhole8746 don't understand the many uses of IRC. Second only to Usenet, it's one of the best places to go for many different things. It's hardly useless.

Clean and straight to the point. What improvements does it need? Bloated skinning? Fluffy icons?
Reviewing 6.17 (Feb 17, 2006)
mIRC is the best IRC client for Windows, but that's like saying a .22-caliber bullet is "the best round to be shot with".
Let's just say it's reliable, but the interface could use lots of work. I am NOT talking about wanting skin support. I am NOT talking about how good it looks. I am talking purely about EASE OF USE for someone who does not use it 17 hours per day.
For example:
I don't use mIRC very often, so I don't have the toolbar icons memorized. Can I choose to show toolbar text? No.
Options aren't consolidated. There is a "Window Options" dialog, a separate dialog for general options (which, despite what you might expect, has interface-related options that decry the need for a separate "Window Options" dialog), a separate "mIRC Colors" dialog (though SOME colors are specified under the general options dialog--you keeping up with all this?), and about 40 other options dialogs all over the place. Oh, there's also another "Windows" dialog under "mIRC Options" > Display > Options > Windows.

Reviewing 6.11 (Oct 11, 2003)
I'd like to note that even though mIRC has a "registration fee", none is making you pay up. mIRC is shareware, not crippleware, meaning... After 30 days when you start mIRC up a pop-up will appear asking from you to donate (the "registration fee") and that's it, no feature will be suddenly gone and etc.
Reviewing 6.11 (Oct 11, 2003)
If you're like me, you've used mIRC for many, many years. After all this time, two things are clear: there is no better IRC client (though at one time XiRCON had potential), and mIRC is very much worth the $20 registration fee. Not only does mIRC connect you to various modes of chat and file transfer, but it provides wonderful mechanisms for learning the basics of programming. I strongly urge the skeptics to give this one a try.

I was very afraid to install it because I thought it would break all of my mirc scripts I installed over the last months, but everything went ok - updated, started mirc, and the old scripts are still loaded and working. about mirc in general: without additional scripts it's very uncomfortable. Basically I would give only 2 stars for the basic version. I am giving 5 stars for the version I use, it's standard mirc with mirc addon scripts I found on various sites - comfortable fserv and xdcc servers, xdcc catchers, comfortable graphical menues which allow me to perform many operations without typing anything, just by the usage of the mouse. Actually the mirc developer should include some of those mirc scripts into the basic version, otherwise everybody has to install them anew. Yes, I know, there are 3rd party full mirc scripts based on the basic version, but with extended functions. However, I don't want to rely on other people's developments and rather add myself only those scripts I like and need the most. Still, some basic functions like a fserv or xdcc server or a xdcc offers catcher should be added to the basic mirc version. Otherwise the basic mirc looks really "stripped" and "naked". All you get is a "skeleton".

mIRC is a great program for IRC, as always. But I've noticed in v6.02 that the author has changed 'Perform' in the mIRC options, the good thing is, he made it so you can have a seperate perform for each network. The bad thing is, perform sorts your commands alphabetically, this has caused me to have a late nickname change or get a GHOST (KILL) delay after I reconnect to my ISP and IRC Server. (I have a 2 hourly disconnection). So 'Perform' is quite important to me.

5.82, some keypoints that I like according to mirc's website: "the new Control+L key combination. It will enable a line that marks the last line in the scrollback buffer of a window that you most probable have read. The line is updated if mIRC isn't the active window. Control+L turns the line on/off if it's currently visible."

Super Great Program...Don't know how I got along without it! I've used it everyday since down loading. I was suprised that it integrated so well with the
rest of my software and caused no error messages.
Reviewing 5.8 (Sep 6, 2000)
I've always liked this program. However, it has not been improved much over the 3 years that I've used it. I would like to see multiple IRC server support and maybe some voice support. What I really don't understand is why the author of the program still releases Windows 3.1x versions.

to dso47: mIRC has always had the basic interface and it has never changed (and will never change, i hope) because it's perfect: smooth, clean and easy access to all the commonly used features.
I've been using mIRC for about 4 years, and I've been writing my script for 3 years now, and the scripting language is getting better and more powerful in every new release (that's also why you didn't see many changes from the outside, I think). I still love mIRC, both the look and the scripting language. :)

*THE IRC CLIENT FOR WINDOWS!*
Sorry... but basically, thats the reality. mIRC is the standard on which all other Windows clients are judged. Over the years we've seen all kinds of new clients emerged, nothing has ever been able to top this. And nothing probably ever will.
As with most recent versions, most new features are aimed at scripters. According to the versions.txt, this version also fixes the long file name support that has always been quirky at best...
All in all, a rock solid release and worth getting for anyone who uses IRC from Windows.

A bit better than previous versions, but still need some work. Less bugs.
