uManiac's XviD Codec is a video codec just like DivX. Many new movies and videos are being encoded with this codec.

XviD is just an implementation of MPEG-4, just like DivX, so yes, you can play XviD's using the DivX decoder, or ffdshow, or $your_favourite_player.
XviD's already proven itself to be an excellent alternative to DivX. That it's open source is a big plus in it's favour.

Are they compatible with DivX though? If not, I don't see how it can take DivX. Just like mp3pro and wma can never take mp3

The difference in XviD Directshow codecs from Nic, Koepi, uManiac's are all i can figure is how you configure the decoder... Koepi, uManiac & Nics standard filters have no directshow decoder settings. Nics Directshow decoder (found on his website) has decoder setting to change Brightness, Colorspace & Postprocessing. I know nothinging about differences in the encoders.
