  1. Comment - Android growth may give Apple, RIM some pause

    (Jul 9, 2010 - 8:25 PM)

Simply put the Android open platform is starting to entice developers in droves,
it use to be, mobile smart phone developers would first develop for the iphone, ipod touch
and then as a secondary concern try to port their apps to a secondary smart phone platform,
Black Berry, Palm, etc. But Android has change that philosophy. It is now both iphone and Android.

You now you are starting to see another smart phone pricing tier develop.
One that resides in between the high price of iphones and low end pre-paid phones, so Apple iphone has to compete against the ever increasing Android models, models that have faster CPUs, more memory, and a development community that is embracing the Android open marketplace distribution paradigm and just plain cheaper. When the day comes, and it will, that a Android smart phone will have a pre-paid payment plan, that is when the gloves comes off, and every Joe and Jane will own a smart phone. Complete smart phone saturation would have been accomplished. And thus, the Google business model will reign causing Google revenue to grow fat on Ad-sense advertising and in turn Google will subsidize some pre-paid smart phone makers, or perhaps, make one of their own. When you speak of smart phones, Apple is still the industry leader, but it is going to be a hard and difficult fight to stay that way. Lets not forget, despite their almost cult like zealous customer loyalty, Apple still only has 8.2 percent of the PC market. Ten years from now, it might also be like that for Apple, with the smart phone industry- It would not surprise me.

It would be nice for google to release a un*x version, ever since version 1 there was talk
of a linux version in development pipe line.
