v7 - SE (22.9.2009) (Oct 26, 2009)
False Positives aren't the half of what ails this app's definitions. If you monitor the disinfection recos, over time you're bound to find:
- OEM driver files marked SAFE by this developer ... but flagged as malware.
.... and by OEMs I mean such no-account entities as Intel, MS, or Nvidia.
... and by SAFE I mean files that continue to be acknowledged as such ...
... yup, by the same folks who suddenly decided, um, no they ain't.
- System and other SAFE files tagged as malware owing to sharing the same filename as mailware.
... so what's a little matter like subdir differentiation?
- Components of SAFE antimalware apps tagged as malware.
... oooh not anticompetitive ... Yet Another Bad Bobble?
- User FP reports being acknowledged ... then later ignored.
... Merge/Purge? Our def's don't need no steekin' Merge/Purge!
- Tagged files that are styled KNOWN TO BE UNSAFE.
... but what they really mean is THAT'S WHAT WERE CALLIN' 'EM NOW.
... i.e., known being the functional equivalent of listed ... NOT verified.
Put all that together and what you've really got is Falsified Positives. Effin Ps by any other name.
You know, it's a heckuva bigger noise when your malware scanner almost always finds nasties the other guys don't. Who cares if the rest cross-check their defs and pay attention to canonical file locations?
Unwary users can get themselves in trouble aplenty with this. If you've installed this app, time you heeded the true message of its moniker:
REMOVE IT PRONTO !!!
2.0.1 (Feb 16, 2007)
Severely dinged for:
- Nagware operation (not disclosed)
- Obtrusive watermaking of all trial shots*
*Mentioned in site FAQ; not in BN limitations.
As WinSnap's watermaking can render screenshots only marginally useful, making it impossible to agree with the developer's assertion: "This allows you to try all features of WinSnap before you purchase [sic] them."
And no, I'm not ridiculing the developer's English.
2.70.31 (Feb 9, 2007)
No, Wallywanka, luckman212 is right. This v2.70.31 is solely for 30-day trial; it must be uninstalled prior to installing the paid version.
The v2.70.23 is the current paid release (32-bit & 64-bit)for all NT kernel client flavors plus vista ; and v20.70.25, all server flavors plus Vista.
6.0.591.002 Beta (Jun 20, 2005)
B2 has some serious problems ... such as pulling kernel-mode faults. It's one thing to release code in this shape as a closed beta. But to offer it as an open beta, that really frosts me.
For now, users who aren't prepared to handle all the aggro should stay away from this beta. Far away.
These defects aside, 6-stream ZAP has some nice new features. When they're working dependably, I'll be giving it another look-see.
