  1. Comment - 'Adware' Distributor Loses MVP Status

    (Oct 10, 2006 - 9:55 AM)

If you don't want it, don't install it. You have a choice. It's not his fault that you install the sponsor.

Since we're all apparently very fond of analogies here, how about this one:
Police radar detectors are freely available online and in stores. It's not against the law to own one. However, in some states, it IS illegal to use it. So, if you drive from Texas (where it's legal) to Louisiana (where it's not) and you forget to take it down, you'll get caught and ticketed. So, is it the manufacturer's fault you got caught because they didn't tell you where you could use it? Or, is it the user's fault for not reading up on the law?

  2. Comment - 'Adware' Distributor Loses MVP Status

I use Messenger Plus! and have been using it almost since the begining. So, maybe I'm biased.

However, the article is incorrect when it says it removes ads from Live Messenger. In fact, Patchou removed that option because MS started using it to make money. Also, sophist_dreams is right when Defender used to site Plus! as being spyware/adware and it was since removed after complaints.

IMHO, people who just click through installs and don't read what's going on are just asking for trouble to start. Plus! went through several revisions of the installer to try and make it as obvious as possible. As for what the adware does, try reading its terms and conditions.

I too am guilty of blazing through the install once and accidentally installing the sponsor on a work PC. But, the readme file and the forums on Plus!'s website explain how to uninstall that software. I did as it said and had no further issues.

So, what's the big deal? Can't blame a guy for trying to make a buck. Personally, I would put anyone who "accidentally" installs the sponsor and can't get it off in the same category as those that open EXE attachments in e-mail from people they don't know.

So, give the guy a break. He earned that MVP. Whether MS should revoke it or not is up to them, but it shouldn't be because of a minority of users who don't read and cause their own I-D-10-T errors.

Okay, I put in my 2 cents. Let the flamming commence.

  3. Comment - MSN Messenger Gets Enhanced Audio

Well, you've apparently been locked in a cave or something. MSN IM v7 is actually a very good client. And, if you think no one uses it, tell that to the people clammering for the 250 contacts limit to be raised. Of course, if all you want is basic realtime SMS over the internet, then stay where you are.

I've used all the major clients for years now (I even still have a 6 digit ICQ account) and at the moment, MSN IM is my favorite. Plenty of nice features, stable, customizable and the one add-on I use makes it even more so. And I haven't spent a penny. And with the partnership with L3 for VoIP, I think that just makes it even better. Voice communications should be a lot clearer and more reliable now even over dialup. And I'm looking forward to getting a chance to use it.

But then, your supposed to be commenting on the article and not going off topic like this and bashing something you obviously don't know much about.
