  1. Review - OpenWatcom

    1.0 Beta (Jan 9, 2003)

I may be a bit biased, because I create Open Watcom in the first place by convincing Sybase to Open Source the code. However for myself and my company, Open Watcom is a huge benefit. It has by far the best cross compiling and debugging facilities of any compiler, bar none. Although there is no support yet for Linux and FreeBSD, when the ports to those platforms are complete Watcom will become the best way to develop code for Linux and FreeBSD for any supported host platform. You could then edit, compile and remote debug your code on your host platform of choice, such as Windows 9x/2000/XP, OS/2 Warp, 32-bit DOS, Linux or FreeBSD! Better yet you can remote debug your application using the serial port, parallel port or over a TCP/IP link to just about any supported target platform as well. Best of all though, every scrap of source code needed to build the Open Watcom compiler is available as well!

Also please note that we were not expecting the first beta of the compiler to be picked up so quickly, and the compiler we uploaded did not have a 'BETA' designation in it. For that reason we have renamed the compiler downloads available on the Open Watcom web site to indicate that they are beta versions. We don't want to get them confused with the official 1.0 binaries when they are released ;-)
