Put simply, 7-Zip just plain works, does the job, doesn't get in your face. I used to use WinZip back in the day (before Window XP), but stopped using it after it succumbed to "upgrade-itis". I now use 7-Zip for all my archiving tasks, both at home and at work.

I work in a CD/DVD production environment, and ImgBurn is a great all-in-one tool for creating, working with and burning CD or DVD image files, as well as for testing master discs supplied by customers for duplication. It may not be pretty, but it gets the job done!

I'm really not sure why people are griping about Google Desktop invading their privacy - you can go into the preferences and turn off desktop indexing and usage tracking, leaving just the sidebar and gadgets. (You will need to vet any gadgets you add, if you're concerned about being tracked). And the most recent versions are no longer the resource hogs of old. Yes, it does crash occasionally, hence I'm giving it 4 out of 5 - apart from that, I can't find much to fault it.
