Ditto: 320U, W2K/RTM, "cannot find scanner." That reeks.

I'm confused about where PKWARE is going with this. RedHat 7.2 comes with zip-2.3-10.rpm by default... It's no GUI but it's not rocket science, either.
Then there's tar | bzip2, which gets you more compression...

Your fair use/timeshifting rights have pretty much been lost when it comes to digital recordings. The Digital Millenium Copyright Act did this.
Now, this is not to say that I won't continue timeshifting and what I consider fair use. The entertainment industry is not going to starve with all the money I pay them. They're just being greedy.
As for TiVo, the hack is very cool, but not very accesible to the average user (you have to put TiVo drives into your PC and edit Linux shell scripts to get the Ethernet working). Joe User would be far better off with a WinTV/PVR card, which does pretty much the same thing. TiVo has no real basis for concern in light of this, but they may choose to mess with the hackers anyway, which is a pity.
TiVo would be better off by actually documenting their stored stream structures, how the hard drives are married and formatted, etc. They really wouldn't be losing anything by doing this (given that they still have the closed-source "myworld" application which is the heart of their interface).

It's a self-guided, gyro-stabilized, hot-air-powered flying personal hype machine.
It comes in two models: The PogoStick(tm) version, which one rides, careening down stairs and into heavy traffic (drawing insults from even bicyclists) and the Copter(tm) version, which one flies while trying to avoid the 35,000 other early adopters who wanted to test fly theirs over the downtown skyscrapers.
The Copter(tm) version comes with a Renewable Fuel Adapter(tm), which uses AP-wire press releases from Microsoft about vaporware as fuel.
Both versions come with a manual that can only be viewed after one year or by signing a non-disclosure agreement.

Auto manufacturers have been doing this for years. Ford comes out with the 2001 Explosion six months before New Year's.
Version numbers have decreasing meaning these days. Windows 2000 is lightyears ahead of 95 and 98. IE 5.5 is virtually unchanged from IE 4. Netscape 6 is radically different from Netscape 4. It all means nothing. Judge by the product, not the number!

Have they perfected the smell of dirty money?
