The Mango update would bring WP7 to where the other OSs are today. The advantage of WP7 is less fragmentation than Android and a more standard interface. More information about features would be appearing soon, I am sure. The problem is the speed of this update for the users. Considering the fact that MS stated that there would be several new phones with WP7 Mango released the 2nd part of this year, it makes little sense for the carriers to delay updating older phones (but one never knows). I would guess that there would be various Nokia phones (they do great hardware) with WP7 Mango early in 2012. If any of the US carriers picks them up is an open question.

I have to say that I read this article wondering if the author lives in another planet. First of all, I really do not care if Apple is successful or not. Success is a great thing and I do not think that anybody should begrudge the fact that Apple made some good choices and created products with decent appeal in the market. Personally, I do not plan to buy any Apple products because of the manner by which this company tries to achieve success - trapping users in a restrictive ecosystem- but this is me. What I have problems with is mostly with the technical press that writes fluff like the article above, acting as Apple apologists or as Apple boosters. This author hardly acknowledged the fact that Microsoft produced slates 10 years ago but gives credit to Apple for "cracking a tough nut" - so much about him being not biased!!! Only the most extreme of fanboys can possibly think that the current coverage of Apple is not biased hugely in favor of that company. It is this specific bias, not Apple itself, that has created some backlash.

I cannot think of more useless device than a slate, any slate (iPad and the rest). A smartphone can do most of the things I need doing on the road and d a convertible tablet/laptop is an excellent instrument for those who have use of finger/stylus input some of the time. In fact, a laptop is far more convenient because of the angle of the screen in watching a movie than any slate. For a ebook readers, LCD screens are simply inappropriate for long-term use. So, to be honest, I cannot see the utility of any slate and more of slates based on phone OSs.

I find this "adoration" of touch very disconcerting. The stylus allows types of input that capacitive touch screens do not allow. Thus, instead of making the user experience richer, we are dumbing it down worshiping at the temple of Apple. It would be best to engineer solutions that allow both digitizers and multitouch to coexist. Actually, Win7 allows does this very well. And even staying with resistive screens, it is possible to enable both touch and a stylus (just not multitouch). But, as usual, stupidity will win.

Why would you want to stream a movie???? Is this really a question? I think that you would like to do it because, like today's music, you would like to store the movies you own on your PC (and soon, 2 or so TBs of storage would be rather common) and watch it through you media center in any of the HDTVs that you may have. Is this a good enough scenario for you? If Blue-Ray would not allow this, then it is dead and gone, despite the paid journalism that Sony is disseminating (see stupid triumphalism such as "Blue-Ray has won")
