  1. Review - PC Tools AntiVirus Free Edition

    8.0.0.662 (Sep 22, 2011)

PCTools AV is a modified clone of Virus Buster:
    http://www.virusbuster.hu/en/

Virus Buster scores okay in Virus Bulletin tests:
    http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archive/vendor?id=20

However Virus Buster seldom participates in more objective tests such as those by AV-Comparatives.

IMO, there are better choices for a free AV such as Avast or a less-known-but-good-freebie, Forticlient Lite:

  2. Review - Process Hacker

    2.16 (May 30, 2011)

Superb! Process Hacker (PH) does every bit as good a job as Process Explorer -- PLUS, when you want to kill a process, PH will absolutely kill it. Reason: PH has several deadly "kill" routines whereas Process Explorer has but one.

  3. Review - IObit Malware Fighter

    1.1 Beta (Jan 31, 2011)

    See screenshots HERE.

Malware Fighter (MF) includes 8 malware-fighting components: Startup Guard, Process Guard, Network Guard, File Guard, Cookie Guard, Browser Guard, USB Disk Guard, and Malicious Action Guard. Each component can individually be turned On or Off by the user.

MF causes little if any discernible drag on my computer's zippiness (it's WinXP with 2 GB ram & 1.7 Ghz CPU -- an oldie). MF is light with respect to usage of I/O, CPU, & RAM. It does use a goodly amount of Virtual space.

The GUI is excellent & easy to learn/use. My one complaint is that it provides no visible lists of the processes Allowed or Blocked. To me, this is a major gap -- example: if I block a process & want to change my mind, I can find no way to do it. For this reason, max rating for me would be a 4.

AFAIK, the effectiveness of MF has not yet been tested by any professional test organization. Accordingly, my "4" rating has to do with nothing more than MF's *potential*.

  4. Review - ClamWin Free Antivirus

    0.96.5 (Dec 8, 2010)

For ClamAV WITH a real-time monitor get ClamAV for Windows. Using in-the-cloud technology PLUS ClamAV's adequate (NOT great) database of malware sigs PLUS community cross-feeds, ClamAV for Windows offers excellent protection. Feather-light (because it's in-the-cloud), stable, stringently maintained -- I recommend you give it a try.

  5. Review - Wise Registry Cleaner Free

    5.71 (Oct 1, 2010)

I _carefully_ told Wise RegCleaner installer NOT to install the ask toolbar. It installed that toolbar anyway, without my permission. The OPT-out on the installer does not work! :(

    Bad bad bad
