Another >very< important point is App compatibility from smartphone to tablet. I have an iPhone4, but not an iPad. I have noticed though that a good 75% of my numerous app purchases have an available, and included in the purchase price, iPad version. Many of the others have an iPad version available for purchase. Some of those apps, like Navigon, would add considerably to the price if I was required to re-purchase them.
The cost to populate your tablet with the apps you already use is a huge consideration. A veteran iPhone user could easily save hundreds of dollars by going with an iPad. Same holds true for an Android user. Windows isn't much of a consideration at this point, they seem to have royally screwed up their mobility product line... WP7 = Next-of-Kin ;)

Would be better for Betanews if this Wilcox guy knew hat he was talking about. Writing like this doesn't lend itself to a credible reputation for any publication :(
