  1. Comment - Now, the great Facebook security giveaway ...literally

    (Jan 15, 2010 - 11:39 AM)

I received a followup message this morning from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada to add detail to who's involved in the process, and how. Here's a snippet from the note:

"The Privacy Commissioner is Jennifer Stoddart, and the Assistant Commissioner responsible for the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, under which the investigation of Facebook was carried out, is Elizabeth Denham.

"Colin McKay has, indeed, been involved in the file, and did meet with Facebook engineers and others, as you correctly pointed out. However, his position with the Office is Director of Reseach, Education and Outreach."

  2. Comment - Where there's smoke: Apple warranty stance raises troubling questions

    (Nov 24, 2009 - 11:23 AM)

I actually have. I've seen the insides of laptops owned by smokers, as well as those who lived with more cats than any human ought to have a right to.

I'm not denying that smoke is horrid for a machine. It is...and the result can be a pretty sickening mess. I'm also not denying that the "disgusting and gross" mess you describe isn't enough to make the average tech dry heave a bit. My point here is that now that Apple's summarily decided to walk away from supporting any machines exposed to smoke, there isn't a whole lot stopping it from deciding to do the same vis-a-vis any other environmental exposure.

So today we start with smoke. Tomorrow they decide excessive sunlight is grounds for voiding the warranty. Then too much Glade air freshener...

Pandora's Box has just been opened.

Thanks, everyone, for your kindness during this most difficult time. I appreciate it very much. May we all celebrate only happies in future.

  4. Comment - It's the end of the iPod as we know it

"People's reaction to Carmi on here are based on how he writes his articles. People feel that they are poorly written and that they are bad examples of journalism."

    People in glass houses...

  5. Comment - It's the end of the iPod as we know it

    (Sep 9, 2009 - 12:13 AM)

"I do take issue with the statement that MP3 players as a standalone device has seen its day. I use a Creative Zen purely as a standalone device for..."

Your anecdotal experience clearly reflects the prevailing market trends. I guess I stand corrected, then.

"Now if I break my iPhone or similiar device that I already shelled out a lot of money for, I now have to purchase that same device at the full retail cost unless my 2 year contract with the cell phone company is up."

Last I checked, the touch didn't require a contract.

"There is a large population in this world that purely uses their cell phone for making phone calls/text messaging."

The basic cell phone market has peaked and is shrinking. Smartphones are the only mobile segment showing any growth, and will ultimately take over from basic phones. The large population you refer to reflects the installed base - yesterday's consumers. Looking ahead gives you a bit of a different perspective.
