Possible reason for not auto-updating: Is it a beta or experimental release? I have seen mine auto-update, so I know it works. Second: solve security issue on cloud services? Especially those that update on bit-diff level? Cloud storage + Truecrypt. Truecrypt can create a portable version of itself which you can upload as well and always have the ability to decrypt your file(s). The key is NEVER stored anywhere but your head (unless you are stupid enough to save it in a text file in the same folder or something). About the default space, 5GB is the new black. Even Box.net went up to 5GB; SugarSync=5.5GB; Amazon 5GB, upgrade to 20GB for under a dollar; ZumoDrive=2GB, Google, Microsoft's SkyDrive=25GB (all can be mapped to local drives, etc using certain programs like Gladinet, GMail Drive). Anyway, if you're looking for a Drop.io or Rapidshare replacement -- Ge.tt is where it's at (or gonna be at). Love that site. Still regardless of anything, DropBox is my favorite of all. They just need to add some more features to it -- but their recent iPhone app update really took things in the right direction on the mobile end. So thumbs up there. Now if I could only RENAME and EDIT text files in-app. I use Nebulous Notes anyway for that, so it's not a huge deal, but they would be what I would consider "fundamental" features to such an app. Slow progress with Dropbox, but slow is better than none, I suppose.
10.1.1.4 (Dec 17, 2010)
Odd... I installed the update before reading this, and am able to open it with no problems... I even have the exact video card they suspect is part of the problem -- an nVidia GeForce 9600. I notice that they noted OSX when speaking about an OS. Does this affect OSX users only possibly? I'll repost if I was wrong and I do encounter the crashes.
But yeah, we all have our own share of complaints and bad things to say about this software, but by far, the worst for me is when simply adding songs... to transfer 10 or 12 songs... the whole interface freezes, and i just have to wait for it to finish its thing before I can use it again. Same thing happens when it syncs randomly like 10 times during my session... even though I told it not to sync anything. Stupid. There's no reason on high end quad core w/ 8 gigs of RAM (with no other programs open) that iTunes should completely freeze up while doing something as simple as transferring data across USB. also, why do I have updates that I have to download for apps, even though I have already updated them on the device through the app store? I gotta download useless updates? It isn't smart enough to do a simple version match? This program is a mess, lacks so much functionality, and for anyone who uses foobar2000; I know there's a lot of fans, they all should know by now that there's a plugin to play and manage iPod and all its derivatives from there. I'm just scared to use it, because there's no telling what Apple is going to do that could possibly screw the whole database and I lose all of my content. I don't have the time or space to backup 64GB of content over USB on a constant basis because of unpredictable and unstable products. iTunes, junk. They have made small progress with the later major builds, but still... the freezing up constantly whenever stuff is being done is inexcusable and makes the product nearly unusable. Two stars, out of pure generosity. Don't like Apple's spoiled "have complete control over anything Apple related, anything that runs on Apple's hardware, and even control things we have no business even controlling... we just have a God-complex." Not respectable. Just because you have the power to do it, doesn't mean it should be done.
1.0.0 RC (Dec 6, 2010)
great program for syncing amongst your computers, accessing through the web interface from anywhere, and even has apps for your mobile devices (you can even stream audio to iphone/itouch, etc). interface is simple, clean, and that's the beauty of it. other competitors like sugarsync, boxnet, mozy... sometimes are just more cumbersome and cluttered if your goal is simple backup/sync/cloud storage. now with the newer beta/rc builds, you can have selective sync, so you only sync what you need if you have a lot of stuff out there and don't need it all. this is a feature that has been needed for a long time, but is not in the "release" build you will download from the site (yet). so for starters, you get 2GB free space, and then 256mb extra for every referral -- BUT -- just to remind (or let people know): if you are a student and have an .edu email address, you can get double the space for each referral, 500mb! you just have to verify your .edu email address by going to https://www.dropbox.com/edu. makes this app/site even sweeter. max you can get for free by referrals is 10gb (2 free + up to 8gb referrals), though if verify your .edu account, the limit also goes up to 16gb! you can also find other ways to increase your space limit by going to https://www.dropbox.com/free and doing any of those things! *if i helped you out with these tips, i'd be more than grateful if you'd use my referral link, as a small token of thanks: https://www.dropbox.com/...TU1MzU1MTU5?src=global0 -- would love to get some more space whenever i can. if you use my link, thank you in advance! btw, they also have paid plans for higher quota demands beyond the free product. dropbox rules, and gets even better with each update, though major/stable releases are too spread out IMO. you can always get the latest beta by going to the Forums link at the bottom of their page, though... which I recommend, to get more functionality in the interim.
5.4.4.0 (Dec 28, 2009)
great program... i choose it over some of the more fully-featured programs like daemon tools because i rarely ever use some of the alternative image formats like nero or alcohol images... and if i have one that i need to mount, i just convert it with ultraiso. other than that, i like it because it's lightweight, free, and simply does what it's intended to do.
my only complaint is the incredible delay between updates. i mean... look at the changelist for this version (12-2009)... we have waited over six months for "added version info" (isn't this standard practice?) and "updated languages" (none of which i'll ever use). i can't complain too much since it's free, but there's pretty much no progression of development or adding of new features/improvements -- and if they do, they're so insignificant that they're borderline pointless. after 6+ months since the last version i'd hope to see "added extra image format support" or "added these 10 new features". yeah right! i'm going to make a program... then release a new version a year later; and here's gonna be my changelog -> "updated version number from 0.1 to 0.2".
just kidding. i love virtual clonedrive, nevertheless. thank you slysoft for this free tool.
0.9.6.9 (Oct 30, 2009)
love my foobar.. reluctantly tried it, i was a winamp guy since the first betas... but i kept hearing about it over and over.. after so long i had to try it to see why everyone rants about it so much. the default UI looks quite simplistic and haggard... but then you realize, with plugins and things, you can make this player look like anything in the world. i have seen some BA looking custom GUI's for sure. it's lightweight. it's modular (a lot of the extra functionality is optional, via plugins)... a lot like firefox and its plugins. i can't use IE anymore.. not really cause i'm an IE hater... just without my extensions... IE feels so lacking.
so i have only 1 complaint about the foo. it can do everything under the sun from convert between nearly any formats, tagging, totally customizable interface, replay gain, batch processing, the list goes on forever.... but WHERE IS THE ALBUM ART FUNCTIONALITY??? i mean adding it (you can view it fine). also what about adding lyrics? just kinda irritattes me that i can do every single thing from start to finish in foorbar, but then i've got to use tag&rename to embed the artwork and lyrics. (also a highly recommended program.. tag&rename is awesome for tagging). am i missing something? also i'm waiting for the author of the ipod plugin to make things fully cool with itunes9 format and latest firmware. i would LOVE to get rid of itunes... i'm just scared to use the ipod plugin for fear that it might cause corrupted DB or something on it (since i heard they changed up the internal DB/layout of everything in iTunes9, throwing everything off.with most all existing ipod utilities and plugins that previously worked. thanks apple. itunes also freezes and crashes every time i try to do anything with my ipod touch 3rd gen. even though this is a brand new smokin computer. foobar -- less than a second to come up. itunes? less than a second to FREEZE up.
so what about the album art deal? i heard there once was aworking plugin for this, but became incompatible at some point. am i just missing the method to add art to each individual file, or at laet in a batch operation? i could do it with all my folder.jpg's probably.. but thanks to WMP, all my nice high-res album art has been shrunken to 200x200 turd art, even though i told it NOT TO TOUCH my tags or update them in any way.
if you use foobar and win7, make sure you get the win7 plugin that gives you the taskbar popup w/ mini art preview/controls/thumbnail and song progress bar on the docked icon like IE or explorer. excellent addon. waiting for this to be native.. and for god sakes let me embed album art from foobar so I can get rid of extra programs that I only need for one specific function the first lacks (happens all the time with a lot of software). i'll end up having like 3-4 programs installed that do essentially the exact same thing as each other.... except that one feature i really need. that makes me have to depend on 3 programs instead of 1... always like that ;) we need more frequent updates too!.. foobar!! send some new features/improvements outr way!
0.9.6.9 (Jul 8, 2007 - 12:48 PM)
simple. you can do it two ways. if you go into windows update, then expand the update description, there will be a checkbox that says 'don't show this update again', just check that and it will hide it. alternatively, if you are going through the tray icon to install updates, simply uncheck the update you don't want to see anymore, then click OK or whatever and it won't show it again. to show them again, go to windows update, then click 'restore hidden updates' or whatever.

i agree.. at least to me the cingular brand name stands out very much in my mind whereas at&t wireless is only a vague memory to me ("i think i remember that company").. i don't even know if AT&T wireless still exists. at least in my area, they'd be doing themselves a disservice by canning the cingular name, lots of people would probably think of it as a fringe cellular provider, at least i would.
