I'm in agreement with both Stokes and Kuchera somewhat. It all depends what one wants to use it for. As a photographer I frequent those forums and have to chuckle when some people complain that you can't use it for Photoshop : ) Well, duh. Personally, between the rest of the Macs I already have, I'm covered in my work. My MBP covers my portability to my satisfaction. And I don't own any smartphone much less an iPhone. I am, however, completely dependent on my iPod Touch. I keep it with me always and when it my 3rd G was stolen last month I decided to see if I could hold out long enough to check out whatever Android tablet was available in the meantime, or at least go without anything until the next wave of devices. One week later I bought a 4th G iPod Touch and I couldn't be happier. Ideally I would love an iPad/Touch that's 6 or 6.5 inches, but it doesn't exist yet so that's that. Pocketability trumps screen real estate in my case, and I don't need to run Photoshop on the subway.
As far as Apple's proprietary nature, I'm divided on it. They're a business, not a social program. Don't like the deal, don't do it. (It's amazing how much internet ink is wasted by people b****ing about a company they purport to not be interested in.) But some of it (proprietary power supplies that they refuse to license to others, which was my P.O. recently) is clearly misguided.
So I'll likely not end up with a current one because I don't require it, and every time I cobble together $500 I buy a lens or some storage. But I see them constantly in use, both for pleasure and professionally. Their or any tablet's usefulness can't be denied but it depends on ones needs.

"the iPad is a useless device, people who bought it know that very well now..."
LOL! What planet have you been living on? One that allows you to make things up? You don't have to like it and you can be one of those people who hate everything Apple does, but what kind of life could you possibly be leading that permits stating falsehood as fact?
I was at a wedding last week and there was a big band playing. They were all following charts but NO PAPER AND NO HEAVY CHART NOTEBOOKS. 12 musicians ALL with iPads which pulled up the next chart. I was blown away. I spoke with a member of the horn section and he was over the moon how much he loved doing it that way.
If it doesn't do anything for you, fine. But "people who bought it know that (it's useless) very well now"? Um, no.
