While chrome may be best performance wise, apart from extensions there is not much to modify or enhance.
For overall functionality and performance, I think Opera beats chrome as it offers a built in email and an IRC client not to mention the "server" client called Unite to stream and share data with others (pus extensions tho not as extensive as chrome's).

While on the expensive side, Directory Opus seems to me to be best file manager ... lots of options and customizations and internal commands to use along with frequent updates and an excellent support forum make it my number 1 pick
