  1. Review - DuckCapture

    2.3 (Mar 2, 2011)

Contrary to what is claimed, this is not freeware. It is shareware that works fully for 30 days only. Furthermore, it requires a download of Microsoft Visual C++ libraries (about 5Mb).

The software works well. I just wish the description had been more honest.

  2. Review - AudioMagic

    3.1.7 (Sep 1, 2008)

I tried this today. Poor website with broken links. Documentation? Skip.

Update: this is not the version I tried (latest is 3.5). Web site seems ok now. Looks better.

  3. Review - UltraVNC

    1.0.5 (Sep 1, 2008)

This is an outstanding tool with by far the best performance of any comparable tool (VNC, RealVNC, TightVNC etc.). In my experience it either works or doesn't depending on the graphics performance/support, but if it works there's nothing to touch it. I'm curious to know why anyone would prefer RealVNC -- unless using Adder hardware.

  4. Review - SyncBackSE

    5.0.1.0 (Aug 28, 2008)

Super program. This belongs on the hard drive of any sync freak. I use it along with Beyond Compare (www.scootersoftware.com) and Superflexible (www.superflexible.com), plus... Robocopy. For incredibly flexible syncing Superflexible is the business. For visual verification and inspection BC is the cat's miaow. For routine use and the ability to share a free version with friends who haven't learn to sync yet SyncBackSE is a good way to go.

  5. Review - Logitech SetPoint (32-bit)

    4.40 (Feb 3, 2008)

Do NOT install this software. First, it's buggy. Second, it's not obvious how it can be removed. It doesn't show up in the Control Panel nor is a program group created with an uninstall option. Logitech should be flogged for this.

Update: the software has updated. Reinstalling and agreeing to download an update from Logitech seems to fix it.

  6. Comment - Lenovo launches notebooks, tablet, and sub-$400 Windows server

    4.40 (Feb 24, 2010 - 7:16 PM)

Some people buy computers that look pretty, others buy them to work. I am a recent convert (9 months) to a Thinkpad X200 after buying first a netbook (Asus 1000) and then a Samsung laptop (R60+). The keyboard on the Asus was too small to type on and the Samsung was too big and heavy. The X200 was my Goldilocks machine and it has the best keyboard of any computer I've ever used. In 11 years of using laptops full time I've never bought the same brand consecutively but I'll be very very surprised if I do not buy a Lenovo next time.

Besides the keyboard the other KILLER feature is the software. In particular, the ThinkVantage System Update tool, which does for drivers, BIOS and other Lenovo software what Windows Update does for the OS.

I'm just hoping for comparable added value options for Linux down the road when it comes to replacing my X200 (running Windows 7 now; dual booting with Ubuntu).

  7. Comment - An ad about nothing: First Seinfeld + Gates ad omitted Vista

A stupid 8 minute review of a 2 minute commercial? This was poor in every way. Stopped it at 92 seconds. Next time plan in advance what you're going to say and try not to look too creepy (get some advice and make sure to rehearse). Verdict: Video diarrhea.
