  1. Review - Advanced StartUp Manager

    1.41 (Jan 5, 2005)

One of the worst startup utilities I've tried--and I've tried an absolute slew of them. Has a poor interface, and makes changes to startup shortcuts even if you don't intend to.

Terrible... Buggy... Yeah that's the end of my review.

  3. Review - Startup Control Panel

    2.8 (Jan 5, 2005)

Nice try, PKKid. Here are the facts:

    1. Shortcut properties: Plenty of other startup control programs handle shortcut properties correctly. In fact, most of them do. Codestuff Starter is just one freeware example. The ancient and defunct Startup Manager from Brad Stowers is another--proving that the idea of handling them correctly isn't new. The fact that you don't realize this just goes to show that you haven't tried any others.

Microsoft added the "Start in" feature for a reason. Making use of that feature--and then having a program come along and break it--is the fault ONLY of the program that broke it. You may as well try to defend a program that deletes a Windows file, because shucks, that file shouldn't have been there in the first place.

    2. Shortcut icons: Same as above; most other programs DO handle this correctly. And why I care about icons is beside the point. Yeah, I'm anal about shortcuts; that's my business. It's not up to you or some untalented developer to come along and decide that my system should be configured differently.

    3. The interface: You're right. The design is what it is, and those who don't like it can say so in a review. Hey wait--I did that already!

    4. The installer: I don't care if a standalone EXE version is available. What download does THIS SITE have? The lousy installer. But either way, if a lousy installer is used, I'm correct to point it out.

So yeah, I'm picky. Too picky to rave about junkware just because it also happens to be freeware. And I can't believe I wasted 8.5 minutes on this.
