  1. Comment - The 'fast-lane' debate resumes over Google and tiered access

    (Dec 16, 2008 - 7:56 AM)

I agree about Edge Caching. What does it matter if Google uses a third party service like Akamai or try to implement cache in house? I assume that the cost of third party cache for YouTube is enormous and since this is a free service, they must cut costs there.

  2. Comment - Alcatel-Lucent wants to get webby with you

    (Dec 15, 2008 - 3:40 AM)

It may be a good step for them, but I feel that the quoted mission statement is too high-level and uses too many buzz words. Waiting to see what they will practically do.
I agree with AlphaBetaGamma that the fact they they are talking about the web (as someone who was working for a telco for a few years and know the company) is already a substantial thing to notice ;-)

  3. Comment - Group seeks kids' online safety in the White House

    (Dec 15, 2008 - 3:30 AM)

Another offer I have heard is to use a special code, like the one you have on some cable TV providers, that will prevent access to adult, violent, etc. sites. Everyone will be in "opt-out" mode by default. If you want to "opt-in" to one these sites, you will have to call your ISP, identify as an adult and get an access code to have access.
It hurts the concept of a free web to everybody, but frankly, as I have kids that will start using the computer very soon, I don't mind trying this as a parent.

  4. Comment - Psystar charges Apple with 'kernel panic'

    (Dec 14, 2008 - 3:00 PM)

In their latest notebook line, Apple has raise the price bar as the MacBook (brick) costs more then the plastic one. And then came the financial situation and Apple offers an expensive line to a market that is shorter on budget.
On the other hans, when Steve Jobs was asked about a cheap netbook from Apple, he said that "we don't how to make a $500 netbook that is not crap".

I am a huge fan of Mac OS X (for desktop environment), but people want to run Mac OS X on a cheaper netbook, and here I feel, for the first time in years, the Pystar are right: we want Mac OS X and we want it on the hardware we want, be it a cheap netbook or a very expensive 11" sony vaio or whatever.
So I think that the battle that Pystar are having is a positive for us consumers and everybody that loves Mac OS should promote this - Apple should offer their OS on other machines.

  5. Comment - Pre-activated iPhone 3Gs available online in the US

    (Dec 12, 2008 - 4:54 PM)

-Apple is so good at workflows around its products (Mac and software) - this step is a MUST HAVE for an Apple product
-Having said that, I would love Apple to be a bit more "normal" in the phone market and to let me buy the phone with other carriers as well. Without a good 3G coverage in my area, iPhone is much less attractive for me
