  1. Review - K-Lite Mega Codec Pack

    4.1.7 (Aug 20, 2008)

Okay I got two big issues with K-Lite. The name K-Lite came from the site which brought us all Kazaa Lite. It made its codecs available using the name K-Lite some time ago.

Secondly, my Kapersky anti-virus scanner complained about. Now I know you might think I got a false positive, No that's not it.

It seems Kapersky does not like when some archives (Zip files) have additional embedded Zip files that are password protected. Upon seeing this I tried to open the nested password protected zip files in the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack and it kept asking for a password. I tried opening these files on my Linux box so that I would not get an unexpected surprise.

Kapersky believes you should never blindly trust locked files that you have no clue at what they are or what they do. There could be a very undesirable file or files inside. Even if it was Microsoft I would urge caution. There is no reason to have locked files within a free codec unless isn't really free (i.e. adware, spyware). We'll never know and I not willing to find out on my XP box.

  2. Review - Movica

    Beta 6.5 (Aug 8, 2008)

Well the scrubbing part was rather confusing in the previous comment. If you tried other programs with similar results then I suggest you bring your PC in for maintenance at your local pc shop. Not entirely sure if the previous user's comments were unbiased due to his pc problems with this and other video editing programs as he mentioned.

May I suggest that you use Virtual Dub. A small and fast non bloated video editing solution. It's a dynamo pack with features that put some of the bigger commercial ones to shame. It's Open Source and it's actively updated from time to time. Go to: http://www.virtualdub.org/ and check it out.

  3. Review - Sysinternals Suite

    Build 07/24/08 (Jul 25, 2008)

Although these tools are very useful. I found the whole package cumbersome and frustating and here's why:

    1) It comes in a "ZIP" compressed file which leads me to reason number 2.
    2) No installer! No "*.exe" or "*.msi" installer.
    3) Most of the tools are command line based.
    4) No unified interface.
    5) This is no suite, a suite should have tools that can communicate with one another so that info is passed with little effort to next app in the suite much like MS Office does.

The tools here are make no mistake. But I find this so called suite, sweet if you are a geek. This file is a geeks dream come true. I was bit disappointed.

  4. Review - Advanced SystemCare Free

    3.0 Beta 2.7 (Jul 16, 2008)

I paid zero dollars and zero cents for this product. For what it does it is one of the best products around. This product is stable and effective. If you require a more robust solution I suggest you fork over $79.00 to Symantec for Norton Utilities. Please don't kill a FREE, excellent piece of software with some unfair comments. If your system experienced issues as result of this product most likely it is your overworked and overburden PC. Advanced WindowsCare is an excellent piece of software work PERIOD!

  5. Comment - Windows XP pauses again in its shuffle out the door

    3.0 Beta 2.7 (Dec 23, 2008 - 9:34 PM)

    "*yawn*

Actually I am. It puzzles me on how so many complain but are to imprisoned and locked down to do anything about it.

  6. Comment - Windows XP pauses again in its shuffle out the door

    3.0 Beta 2.7 (Dec 23, 2008 - 11:48 AM)

This is why I use Open Source operating systems like Linux. I will not be a slave to knee jerk decisions that are designed to keep me broke. Aside from killing O.S.es that are fine, the whole licensing thing is totally appalling. Once you own your Windows software you really don't own it. There's always some additional license or software you need to buy extra for Windows.

And don't get me started on the viruses and spyware Windows has and Linux does not have these malware things. I spend more time enjoying and using my PC with Ubuntu Linux and hardly ever any time cleaning, repairing or buying licenses.

    Try a Linux based O.S. @
