  1. Comment - Apple shouldn't rush iPhone 5, and neither should you

    (Mar 28, 2011 - 8:59 PM)

"All three news organizations have stout records for reliable sourcing, particularly this kind of unsourced rumor."

Is it just me, or is that sentence a paradox? How can they have reliable sourcing for an unsourced rumor?

  2. Comment - Are you caught in the iPhone 4 Death Grip?

    (Jun 29, 2010 - 11:26 AM)

Yup; got the iPhone 4 on June 24, and I got complaints from whomever I was speaking with, every single time. They were saying I was constantly breaking up (and no, it's not AT&T, since I was talking in a spot where I had perfect coverage and no problems previously) and that my voice was going in and out.

I was hoping that it was just a glitch, but sure enough, if I hold the phone normally, like in all the Apple iPhone 4 ads, I can see the bars go from 5 to 4 to 3 to 2 to 1. Which might be fine if it was actually holding good reception, but if I run a speed test, the results were noticeably worse when I was holding the phone than if it was just sitting on a desk two inches below where I was holding it. Upload and download speeds were sometimes in the single digit kbps range. Not even close to acceptable.

So I gritted my teeth and went to the Apple Store to brave the crowds and buy the Apple Bumper "case", which at $30 is a complete rip-off for basically a rubber and plastic ring. The fact that we basically have to have that to use the phone makes it seem like Apple should include one with each iPhone 4, or just make it part of the phone at the factory.

Steve Jobs and Apple telling us that we're holding the phone incorrectly is complete crap; even their own ads show them holding the phone "incorrectly"!!

I'm hoping that Apple will at least give full refunds on the Bumper cases to those who purchased them.

  3. Comment - Has your smartphone changed your life?

    (Mar 4, 2010 - 11:11 AM)

My first experience with a device that was supposed to make my life more organized was with a Palm V. Then a Palm Vx. Then a Palm Tungsten T. What I discovered with all those devices was that while they were neat and did have all my contacts, calendars, etc...in one place, the need for manual synchronization made it less likely for my stuff to be synchronized all the time. Plus, sometimes I'd forget it at home, or at work, which made it kind of pointless. And to be honest, I think I used the Palm devices more for gaming than actual productivity tasks.

Then, I got a Motorola MPx220 and a hosted Exchange account. All of a sudden, it was so easy to keep everything synchronized! Granted, e-mail kinda sucked on the MPx220, but I always had all my contact and calendar info up to date, and it automagically was synchronized with Outlook on my home computer, and with Outlook Web Access from ANY computer. Then I upgraded to the Cingular 8125. The hardware keyboard was fantastic. E-mail was now much more usable. And that's when I started installing programs, like an offline, compressed version of Wikipedia. Which allowed me to look up pretty much anything, anytime. I then upgraded to the AT&T 8525, then the AT&T 8925. With the 8925 and its built-in GPS, I could now stop printing out directions from mapquest.com and just use my phone. When Microsoft came out with Windows Live Search, that now made local lookups and reviews easy and useful. I didn't get an iPhone until Exchange support was part of the package, and I was hesitant of the lack of a physical keyboard, but so far, it's worked out great. With all the apps available, like weather, traffic, local search, games, etc...my iPhone is an indispensable tool for me.

"Work is meant to be done at work and when I'm home, its meant to be done at home."

I think you mean to say that when you're home it's not meant to be done at home. From your prior sentences, I assume you're meaning to say you don't want to bring work home with you anymore.

  5. Comment - Why a Verizon iPhone wouldn't work (for Verizon)

    (Oct 9, 2009 - 3:27 PM)

Maybe it's just me, but "AT&T CTO John Donovan said his network's data traffic has grown by 4.932% in the two-and-one-half years that it has been the sole US supplier of Apple's iPhone" seems to indicate that if AT&T can't handle a less than 5% increase, they should rethink their strategy.

Although the next statement that the voice traffic has grown by a factor of two seems to indicate that Betanews has made a mistake in the data traffic figure. Is it 49%? 493%? 4,932%?
