  1. Review - Paint.NET

    2.1b (Aug 15, 2005)

Yup, it's Paint. Dot Netted. And it's almost Paint Shop Pro. Woopdeedoo. How about only telling us about v2.5 or v3? Hmmmm?

    BETA builds ONLY please.

  3. Review - ACAPtxfr

    1.0 Beta 6 (Apr 9, 2005)

Wow, another sinnerware special. Most people code these apps as a programming exercise, but not these guys. I wish they'd stop filling up betanews with their crap.

Think my comments are unjustified? Just take a look at the design of the apps...what userinterface-illiterate programmer designed them? Take a look at the icons. Jeez, have you seen Mac OS X?

I looked through their awards page and tried to find the awards from other sites, in a few places the awards were fictious. Not impressed.

And finally, and most importantly, this "app" - what a piece of sh*t. It took you more than one release to get this right? OMFG.

  4. Review - Hamachi for Windows

    0.9.7.7 Beta (Mar 5, 2005)

I've been following Hamachi since the first beta builds and they've come a long way in quite a short space of time. Everything that I've requested has been actioned. They've added more information pages to their website, added a support forum and fixed several issues.

As for the actual application, Hamachi is a doddle to install and setup. If you've ever setup a VPN yourself, you'll appreciate how easy Hamachi is. So far I've used it with my parents and several non-techie friends - guiding them through the installation over the phone - and I've had NO problems with it.

Once running, Hamachi acts the initiator of a secure tunnel, and 9 times out of 10, it works flawlessly.

I've seen people complaining that there's a build every day, well, you don't have to upgrade every day, but if you want to keep as bug-free as possible in this BETA stage, then best upgrade.

  5. Review - Microsoft PromqryUI

    1.0 (Feb 3, 2005)

What a crock. I've been looking for a tool that'll do this under Windows for ages. Instead of testing each adapter on the network by analyzing the route, it uses RPC to check each adapter - which of course requires you to be an admin on each box. So how would you check a rouge box (such as a laptop) on your network?!

Rated 2 because if you an admin on every box in your network, this might be useful to you.

  6. Comment - Death Knell Sounds for Nullsoft, Winamp

    1.0 (Nov 11, 2004 - 8:40 AM)

Like most of you, I remember listening to my first mp3 on WinAmp 1.x and thinking, "wow, this is the future". Those guys at NullSoft changed the way we ALL think about digital audio and we should be wishing them well in their next job - I'm sure their great minds will help produce amazing software that continues to change the future of computing.
