  1. Comment - iPad cannot win the tablet wars

    (Jun 20, 2011 - 9:26 AM)

    I beg to differ.

You appear to be preaching to the converted as your dedicated, but misinformed, commentators pile on the rhetoric to support your argument.

Yes, maybe, sometime down the line the tablet wars will eventually succumb to commoditization, but those days are many years away.

Each of these me-too products are being launched and promoted as sort of Anti-iPads. They use such phrases as "does all this at the same time" and “Your wife will love the dual core Tegra 2 chipset.” or, "It runs Flash". All appealing information to geeks but the market the iPad is selling to ain't geeks, and I hate to break it to you, there are far more non-geeks in the world than geeks. So the market for the iPad is far greater.

At the moment Android for tablets is still a mess.

Until Google get to sort that out then none of the Honeycomb tablets are going to gain any traction.

Seth over at 9 to 5 Mac has his reasons for talking down Apple.

  4. Comment - 100,000 Motorola XOOMs sold isn't bad, it's good

Amazon Cloud Drive... If you don't think Apple will have an equivalent soon then you aren't doing your research. Amazon didn't even have the decency to do the deals up front just released it and are hoping they won't get nuked.

Flash... iSwifter works pretty well as a tabbed browser on the iPad that runs Flash

File System Access... People really don't need to know where their files are - honestly - some users used to store stuff in the trash can back in the day because it was on the desktop. If you are doing word processing you want your word processing file to be there. If you are doing something in garage band you can browse your files in the app. In all cases you can send a file to any other app on the device. A different, post PC, way of doing things.

HDMI out. Apple are using airplay to achieve the same thing. Except you don't need to have anything plugged in.

USB port - there are add ons when required. Everything else can be shared either locally or on the Internet.

Seemless Google Integration... Some people don't want or need this.

The reason for "going through iTunes" is that it actually encourages people to back their hardware up. Geeks do this as a matter of course. Once in a while plugging in the iPad achieves the same purpose without making things complicated.

The problem with the XOOM is that too many of the promised features weren't delivered on release. Flash is still pretty crappy. SD card cannot be used yet and I am pretty certain not one of the Xooms have been retrofitted with 4G yet. So it really was an exercise of hope over futility.

The marketing for the Xoom has been crap. The spaceship ad is a perfect example. Who was it aimed at? Probably a small group of younger males who play games and want to watch ripped movies. The iPad has a much wider appeal and has many streaming channels such as Hulu and Netflix. The Netflix website blocks Honeycomb devices.

At the moment the Xoom is still too expensive and with less choice. The people who are buying it are just allergic to the Apple logo and are cutting their nose of to spite their face.

  5. Comment - 100,000 Motorola XOOMs sold isn't bad, it's good

Here's the thing. Apple have made more revenue from the sales of the covers for the iPad 2 than Motorola have made selling Xooms. If you call that a success then perhaps you have lower standards than most.
