  1. Review - Mozilla Thunderbird (v3.1) for Windows

    3.0 Final (Dec 9, 2009)

    @God Dammit!
Yeah, it would probably be nice if there was a manual junk mail delete menu item, but a rating of 1 for this is absurd. What you missed entirely is that in your junk mail config there is an option to automatically delete junk messages older than a specified number of days.

  2. Review - foobar2000

    1.0 Beta 3 (Dec 7, 2009)

Continues to work great and has improved quite a bit with v1.0.

However, what foobar could really use is a better online community site to function as a centralized repository for plug-ins and themes (like Mozilla has done for FF). They have featured some popular ones which is nice, but it can be a pain to track down others.

  3. Review - Mozilla Thunderbird (v3.1) for Windows

    3.0 Beta 4 (Sep 23, 2009)

Nice performance increase in Beta 4, although it disregarded my existing layout.

Since Beta 3, it tends to not exit gracefully. It gets caught in a loop and maxes out the CPU until it is forced to terminate.

  4. Review - Microsoft Windows Vista (32-bit)

    Service Pack 2 (May 26, 2009)

Pretty painless install, although it takes an awfully long time for it to "personalize" Windows Mail (which I have never used).

Once up and running after the install, I ran into a problem with Windows Update hanging on load. However, this went away after a reboot (although it did initally list SP2 as being ready to intall on opening which went away with a refresh). Other than that, no issues so far.

  5. Review - Opera for Windows

    10.0 Build 1413 Alpha (Apr 11, 2009)

Upgrade install path completely overwrote my previous configuration whereas prior alphas had respected it. Very irritating!

  6. Comment - Network admins stunned and reeling from repeated Firefox upgrades

    10.0 Build 1413 Alpha (Aug 15, 2011 - 10:44 AM)

Overblown issue. Version numbering is a matter of perception. To gauge the impact, you have to check out the change log. Most of the changes between versions 4 through 6 are enhancements under the hood. I get that the security folks are fans of stability and have gotten quite comfortable with a fairly slow browser development cycle, but things are changing. Even MS is moving much faster with IE development.

The add-on architecture change is still a little problematic, but that continues to improve and will be resolved in time. A few of mine haven't been updated, but still work fine with the compatibility checking overridden.

  7. Comment - Apps on the TV: still a pipe dream

    10.0 Build 1413 Alpha (Jul 26, 2011 - 5:47 PM)

You really can't count on TV manufacturers to support their "apps".

  8. Comment - Google issues temporary fix for the 'there aren't enough native Honeycomb apps' problem

    10.0 Build 1413 Alpha (Jul 19, 2011 - 12:39 PM)

You also have to factor in the Honeycomb is funky, non-open source release. Google is holding out for Ice Cream Sandwich to share more refined source.

  9. Comment - I'm having doubts about cutting cable's cord

    10.0 Build 1413 Alpha (Jul 18, 2011 - 6:18 PM)

OTA is a great option IF you're in the right location with the right antenna for the job. Obviously you're hoping to keep the Tivo in service. If the goal is to lower your bill and you aren't having luck with OTA, go for the lowest tier basic package which will essentially be just the broadcast networks. Don't know if Tivo can handle ClearQAM, but if so then you should be set.

  10. Comment - Google issues temporary fix for the 'there aren't enough native Honeycomb apps' problem

    10.0 Build 1413 Alpha (Jul 18, 2011 - 6:07 PM)

Sure, the additional tablet real estate could be put to use with specialized apps. However, many work just fine as long as they were built with a decently fluid layout. There really isn't a need to specifically target 3.x and alienate the large user base not up to that version.
