  1. Review - Apple iTunes for Windows

    8.1.1 (Apr 7, 2009)

For everyone who seems to be under the impression that iTunes is required for iPod media management, you should really consider SharePod as an alternative.

It even lets you transfer files in the opposite direction, on any PC you choose... something which iTunes will probably never support. Simply place the executable on the iPod, and you can use it anywhere.

  2. Review - Ultimate Boot CD Full

    5.0 Beta 6 (Dec 9, 2008)

It really doesn't get much better than this. This is an excellent collection of diagnostic tools and utilities. I'm glad this one includes INSERT, too.

  3. Review - McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool

    2.0.155.1 (Aug 16, 2008)

This along with Symantec's removal utility is indispensable at our shop for getting rid of OEM pre-installed security software on new PCs and notebooks. It saves a lot of time on the bench by not having to uninstall 3 or 4 separate portions of these suites (with a reboot after each one usually) before they're "completely" removed.

  4. Review - Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi

    2.18.000 Beta (Jun 3, 2008)

    Taken from the release notes:

    Added Features:

    * Dolby® Digital and DTS® driver decode re-established for sound cards that included decoding in their Windows XP drivers (Not applicable for products that included a 3rd party software DVD player license in the package).
    * DVD-Audio playback re-established for sound cards that included the application in their Windows XP software suite (For Windows Vista 32-bit only).
Requires the latest Creative MediaSource DVD-Audio Player Beta software. Click here to download.

    Fixes:

    * Resolves issues of intermittent and random application/system crash when playing games or running applications that use EAX®, DirectSound®, OpenAL and/or ASIO features.
    * Resolves issue of volume mapping leading to very soft volume level in systems using Windows Vista with Service Pack 1.
    * Resolves issue with distortion and noise occuring in systems with 4 GB of RAM or greater.

    Known Issues:

    * X-Fi CMSS®-3D feature is not available in Windows Vista 64-bit.

These drivers enable the same features of the modified drivers another user recommended from Goat Soup. Also, Creative's own ALchemy software adds EAX support in Vista, and I've found that 3D positional audio works as it did in XP with DirectSound3D games. I'll trust that over hacked drivers any day.

  5. Review - nVIDIA GeForce Drivers for Windows

    174.74 (Apr 1, 2008)

No... perhaps you'd like to show everyone where you see it:

    http://www.nvidia.com/ob...ta_x86_174.74_whql.html

The products supported with this particular release are just that... supported, and they include no other GPU family than the ones listed. They may work, but are not supported by NVIDIA if problems arise. That is why the latest WHQL release for any other GPU is still 169.25.

  6. Comment - Apple says iPad is a million-seller

  7. Comment - Apple says iPad is a million-seller

    174.74 (May 3, 2010 - 10:21 AM)

...and yet I never see anyone actually using one or even carrying one around. Funny, since there's an Apple store next to where I work.

Three people in my office stated that they were definitely going to get one, since they were relatively content with their iPhone / iPod Touch. To this day, nothing. They were underwhelmed, as am I still, with this "magical" device.

  8. Comment - Be smart, don't buy into the iPad hype

    174.74 (Mar 21, 2010 - 2:57 PM)

The iPad is a seriously underwhelming device, especially when placed alongside and compared with the iPhone / iPod Touch. If neither of those devices didn't already exist, then the iPad would be mildly appealing. I cannot imagine anyone wanting a larger, more cumbersome version of an iPod Touch.

This is not what Apple should have released as their first foray into the tablet arena. It should have been fully centered around Mac OS X, not iPhone OS-based. Locking it to the App Store is just ridiculous.

Months ago, I installed Windows 7 on a 6 year old HP Compaq TC1100 tablet PC. Some of the drivers were a little difficult to find and install, but the entire ordeal was extremely worthwhile. Granted, it doesn't run nearly as smoothly as it does on my more modern PCs and laptops (it's only a 1 GHz Pentium M w/ 512 MB RAM), but in spite of that, this is what a tablet experience should be.

I hope the iPad fails miserably... and I hope even more that Apple learns from their mistake and releases a true "tablet PC" (you know, the one that all the "bloggers, journalists and socialwebites" for the longest time were speculating about being released).

Apple deserves to be knocked down quite a few rungs on their elitist ladder of arrogance and listen to what consumers actually want. Months of rumors leading up to the unveiling of the iPad, as well as the last couple months of criticism once everyone found out what it actually was, should be indication enough that this is not the product everyone was expecting or hoping for.

  9. Comment - This is not a PC: Microsoft debuts Windows Phone 7 Series

    174.74 (Feb 17, 2010 - 10:30 PM)

    @PC_Tool:

In case you were wondering why I haven't been around much, allow me to present exhibit A...ires, to name just one reason out of many.

This place just simply isn't fun or remotely interesting anymore, and that saddens me.
