It found a "sneaky" missing Microsoft update (MS09-035 - KB973544) which Microsoft Update site did not mention. An exceptional tool shoould it be for its sole capacity to analyze present and absent MS security update. It happens to perform much more, really brilliant. |

A friend wanted to buy some extra memory for his computer but did not what kind of memory it used and where the computer was located (large desk against the wall with the computer inside a compartment that was just big enough) would of been a pain to open and examine so I used Belarc Advisor to try and discover. It showed me that the computer only had 512mb which I already knew but that was it :( I had to use SIW to find out if pc2700 sdram 166mhz. So I would like to see some improvement on that area. And I recommended my friend buys a new computer lol Great program though |

DatabaseBen doesn't know what he is talking about. Belarc Advisor DOESN'T leave memory-resident processes that consume resources. Obviously by giving out the freeware version, Belarc hope to get people to buy the paid-for version (which has more features). Just like all the other publishers who do exactly the same thing. Seeing as it is explicity stated that it is free for personal use, that makes it plain that it should not be installed on business PCs. It is the responsibility for businesses to lock down their own PCs so that this (and many other unauthorised) product cannot be installed. Just like how they should lock down their system to prevent unauthorised use of USB keys for example. The application simply does what it says it's supposed to do. Nothing more, nothing less. |

I always keep a copy of the latest release of Belarc Advisor, but rarely install it. Frankly, i prefer SIW in it's place. However, there are times I have had to use this software for problem diagnosis. I do test software and the information Belarc gives is invaluable, particularly when trying to track down a software conflict. It sometimes is good to be paranoid, particularly about the internet. You never know who is actually on the other end. But Belarc has been around for years and years. I believe I first found it about 10 years ago. If there was something nefarious aabout Belarc, it wouldn't have lasted 10 years or more. Security experts could and would have forced it out of business. Belarc is safe. It is excellent software. And while I prefer other software to Belarc, it deserves a 5. |

Its not a bad application for doing what it does. As to the question of privacy/security, the only problem I see is between the keyboard and users posting up their belarc profiles to the web. Other than that, I haven't seen any evidence of wrongdoing and Belarc seems to be keeping up with their end of the deal.. Database Ben, If you can show us ALL the sniffed data and what actually gets sent to Belarc, perhaps wed be more inclined to believe your conspiracy theroy... I'd like to see this myself.. Untill then, your just shouting fire in a theater and trying to cause panic.. If a user has good internet practices and security, there shouln't be a problem ...Id like to mention that since it checks for MS security fixes, of COURSE its going to be updated every month... Love this program. I see nut case is back lol Issue 1: can you list the dll's that remain. Issue 2: It's not required that you install it, the program does not disable itself after a short period of time, no alien or government black agent shows up and makes me install it. It's a choice if you want to install the frequent updates. Updates are good, whether they are monthly are every 6 months. Actually don't bother listing the dll's like the others on this board I'm going to make the choice to simply stop feeding the troll and ignore you. |

I really like this program comes in real handy with friends computers. I would really like a portable version though so I don't have to install it on their computers, especially if they are computer illiterate. As for DatabaseBen and all the other usernames he/she has used throughout the months. At least twice in the last 8 months I have looked at Belarc Advisor, used software from SysInternals, used a packet sniffer etc. etc. and I found nothing "evil" about this program. You are not trying to help anyone or warn them with honesty, that's why you keep using different usernames. I seriously doubt you are trying to spread some fud because you are part of another software company, and if you are you are failing. I just think you are not quite all there, the lights are on but nobody is home. So whatever the deal I doubt you will stop, I don't think someone who is not quite all there really can without some professional help. Does the job. Nothing suspicious about the app, as it doesn't send any info anywhere. Only if the user is stupid enough to post the .htm file on the net himself will the report (or indeed any info from the app) get out. DatabaseBen, it's updated cos Microsoft releases new security updates every month, therefore the app must be updated to detect these new updates. You obviously didn't understand so I've pointed it out to you there. |

I have use Belarc Advisor for years, and I've compared it to other similar products. It is far superior in both thoroughness and aggregated output. I use it as a means of reminding me of what software and licenses I have installed on a machine when I do a rebuild or other maintenance for both my machines and clients as well. It saves me hours of work. I cannot imagine why someone would have the desire to upload their results for the world to see. If you have to be told that you are engaged in a risky action, then you are probably only playing with this app in the first place. We live in a republic with democratically elected representatives, not a democracy. The founders very deliberately, and wisely, found a democracy to be anathema. |

There seems to be some confusion here. Belarc creates a file. What you do with it is up to you. Some people have chosen to put it on a web server. Good luck to them. This is no different than creating a document with Microsoft Word and placing it on a web server. Neither program (Belarc or Microsoft Word) is inherently insecure and sharing informaiton. Where you save the files may be inherently (or otherwise) insecure. |

Hi BelarcGuy; My problem isn't with the driver itself. As I said originally; the driver is harmless and I do understand its function. The issue for me is that the driver remains behind after the program is removed by deleting the program directory and is hidden. A simple batch file that deletes the program directory and executes a .reg file that removes the driver from registry as an uninstall routine would suffice. I should also note that Belarc Advisor is not the only utility that leaves a driver behind when removed. Lastly, I would like to thank Belarc for providing such a great little utility for free. Edit: I can't stress enough that my small complaint is a housekeeping issue and NOT, repeat, NOT a security issue. If you are stupid enough to post the HTML file online you are too stupid to own a computer in the first place. |

Hi Canuckistani, The only driver the Advisor installs is for reading the SMBIOS of the computer, and it's identified as Belarc SMBIOS Access (e.g. shows in the System Info Tool). It let's the Advisor show things like what memory slots there are and what's in them. A driver's typical for a tool like this, as otherwise some things can't be detected. Feel free to remove it, but be aware that it disables some features of the Advisor. Best Regards |

Works great here! No problems whatsoever. It does what it says, does it well and is very customizable for its output. If you dont want your info indexed by google, dont post it to the web. The info isnt indexed if google cannot get to it. I guess some people need to learn how the internet works before being allowed on it. |

belarc is a tool to check what a system is. what this system has, and shows to those who knows, reg keys etc are very common!!! if your paranoid ? do not post or disclose your codes/keys etc!!! it's gonna check 4 updates!! mobo or hotfixes init! excellent tool for purchasing 2nd hand gear! |

It's a good program to be sure. However, it does install a driver that can't be uninstalled without going into Device Manager and choosing "Show hidden devices". The driver is perfectly harmless but there should be an uninstall routine that removes it without having to dig for hidden drivers an ordinary user likely doesn't know even exist. So, one point off. |

What these uneducated, ignorant (the two below me) people don't realize that all the neat google searches they find are the result of other people MANUALLY posting their Belarc results to the net with various reasons and by various means without taking care to block-out their pertinent information that could compromise their licensing and/or security. Being updated frequently to reflect changes and additions that are added to MS Updates make it a great program to keep up to date with the latest fixes and security advisories. Reading through I see a few 'ignorant' people, such as the case of one posting a known pirated cd-key for XP Pro. To make you aware, Please read http://www.betanews.com/terms and pay attention to the Misc portion. Also note your IP ect.. is logged, while under laws, if required Beta News could be asked to provide the required information for such users posting things like that. I find it odd that people who are so concerned about "privacy" will blindly post information on any site including this one containing their information, keys, ect.. Maybe its time to get off the net and get some fresh air? Anyhow, Belarc does not compromise any of your sensitive data, only users who post information willingly do that, it simply shows it to you in the privacy of your own OS, what you do with it there after is your own problem. Take note of http://www.belarc.com/privacy.html First line "The Belarc Advisor keeps your PC profile on your PC and does not send it to a web server, including Belarc's server." To clarify, the infor is stored on your PC locally, it opens the info in an HTML file using your default browser. (it is not opened from the net at all, you can verify this by disabling your net and running it ;)) Of course, any idiot can visit the programs main site and read their FAQ's (http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html#faq) and Privacy Statements, as well as get a world of other information about Belarc. As far as a "Change log" updates to Belarc are merely updates to contain new information such as new security vulnerabilities and updates that are provided to the various OS's in which it supports. When a new update package is released by MS, Belarc is updated to include the detection of the said update if it is missing or installed, ect.. and provides information for you in the event of either/or. If you really want more information on Belarc, why not visit the official site and check the Whitepapers section and follow instructions to get the info you want? I give Belarc a 5, not only for being a great tool, but also for being free and providing an easy way for us to keep up to date on our systems security and updates. |

Wow, there are some uninformed people on here! Belarc Advisor is a great free program, and has been for years. It doesn't post any of your information anywhere. What it does do is give you a pretty detailed report of the software and hardware on your computer, for your own information. It's the careless users that have posted their Belarc Advisor-produced profiles in forums and other places that has created the privacy issue. Here's a tip: If you post information on the Internet, other people can look at it! If you want to post your system specs in a forum or anywhere else, don't include (or at least cover up) your product keys! Do some research before you mistakenly write ignorant reviews that can hurt the reputation of good freeware. People who write great programs that they give out for free deserve credit, not unjustified criticism. |

The monthly updates are released because Microsoft releases hotfixes every month. Belarc is not an online capable app, it does not stream new additions to it's database via the net. Therefore it needs to have monthly updates to correctly identify new Microsoft hotfixes. |

One has to wonder why the critics of this utility keep asking the question as to why updates are coming every month. To me, it is very simple. Microsoft releases updates every month, therefore these updates have to be included in the program every month for it to give a precise picture of a particular computer's status. Great program. A google of Belarc shows that this product is highly recommended as a baseline security analyser. As usual, I didn't get past page 4 in google but I didn't see any negatives. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, so do the research, download the program, and use it. Here's my opinion: Belarc does not display information that isn't already there. I wouldn't assume the bad guys/girls can't get this information without Belarc. If someone believes that Belarc leaves droppings on their computer for exploit by someone else, then it is the user's responsibility to monitor their computer and shred the offending files/cache and post the results for analysis by the experts. |

I worked fine on my computer with a IE7 B2 but it does not report everything correctly. I have used this program before and it did not report everything correctly. ( ex. My Intel Core Duo 2.0ghz reported as a PIII 2Ghz ) Either way it has alot of good information in it. |

AL: you're not serious! Belarc works with IE & Netscape versions all the way back to 2-- & now yuo assign responsibility to it for not working with a beta browser just released? IE clashes with a lot of sites and apps because it is so new & different...let's rate ½ the world negatively because it can't immediately interface with the newest app of the day....wow! What else do you want from poor Belarc, blood?!! This's a Must have: easy, fast, quick report of sysinfo, installed apps, software licenses, installed hotfixes-- which are missing, which installed incorrectly or are broken, etc., etc. at a glance-- perfect for 'initial / cursory' remote troubleshooting. I propose that everyone obligatorily attach(not paste!) in any help request posting the following reports: belarc, hijakthis, event/fault/boot logs. Then one can delve further with things like everest, pcwizard2006, sandra, etc. ..for those who complain this doesn't compare to these: it's not meant to-- it's an info reporter of a few kilobytes, not a multi-megabyte detector/analyzer/troubleshooter. |

Yes, not as good as the specialised applications, but very usefull non the less as a quick checking on someones PC it does a good job. BTW: the latest version detects Nod32 correctly. |

I agree with Brian about antivirus detection. In my case, I uninstalled NOD32 at the end of the trial period. I even used a registry cleaner to be sure it was removed, but Belarc still identifies it. |

A good program for creating a brief summary of what's on your system, but not a substitute for the wealth of detail you get with Everest/AIDA, surely? One specific problem: it isn't very clever at detecting antivirus programs - I have NOD32 installed and Belarc fails to identify it. |

This utility is unsurpassed for a comprehensive software check and I always rely on it when I look into a new system. Since it checks the validity of Microsofts' hotfixes, I guess we shall be getting at least monthly updates. |

I'm impressed: The install AND the first "profile" - combined - took under 30 seconds on a 2.4G Celeron. The information it presents is well formed. For small companies, this will be a must-have-tool with respect to it's file size, ease of use, and price. |

Been using this for years and it is truly unique and just gets better and better. Not only does it now give you virtually everything about apps installed on your PC, but the status of hot fixes, if they need to be reinstalled as well as a ton of hardware data and to top that serial numbers of a load of apps. What a great auditing and reference tool. Superb! |
