Absolutely the best BT client available. Say what you will about other clients, but you can't beat a single 170KB executable that does it all. |

This is simply the best torrent client there is. One exe that does it all! Fast, simple and small. If only there were more apps that followed uTorrent philosophy we would all be better off :-) If you need to download torrent files do yoursekf a favor and try this client! you'll never want anything else. Don't forget to crank up that upload ;-) |

To anomoly: hats off to the guy who is programming Halite for writing it in assembler, but it has a LONG way to go before it's even close to being competition for uTorrent. Halite has some real annoying bugs, not the least of which is the ridiculous delay when you try to close the program. Plus entering the max upload speed on the main window doesn't modify the max upload speed! Back to uTorrent. However, the latter is starting to get REAL bloated. uTorrent's author should have quit adding features months and months ago - it was good enough then and now it's just starting to become a resource hog (comparatively speaking). Any more bloated crap and my review drops to a 4. |

Downloaded, Used, nothing wrong found. As of reading all the other posts, it seems you all call this "spyware" and that everything that is done is tracked, I fail to see anything on monitoring the program and even looking into the code itself. |

It's very easy to limit µTorrents bandwidth utilization in the preferences. ADSL allways needs a bit upstream left to send ACK packages during download. Simply limit your upstream a bit and you'll experience perfection! |

It's not "ad-supported freeware". I have uTorrent installed and don't see any ads anywhere. They don't install the toolbar without your permission (as some scumbags do). |
| Second Shadow | Jun 12, 2009 | 1.8.3 Build 15619 Beta | ![]() 5 out of 5 |
To Prospero424: I see your point, and partly agree with it. I may have been a bit drastic in my previous statements. However, you’re making it sound as if poor Ludvig Strigeus needs to bundle the Ask toolbar to feed his starving children (“These are hard times for code monkeys”), while the truth is that he sold uTorrent to BitTorrent Inc. a few years ago for an undisclosed amount. BitTorrent Inc. is a company which has received several millions of dollars in funding and appointed its first Chief Financial Officer less than a year ago. They’re not starving, they’re just cashing in on their investment, which is perfectly OK, but I resent their abusing the “freeware” label. This program is now an ad-supported freeware, which in my book is a type of adware, just like other fine programs like the ones you mentioned. I’d also like to point out that it’s not necessarily true that you’ll be stuck using second-class freeware should you shun this kind of programs. In some cases you’ll have no options, but in others there are first-class alternatives, for example: Virtual CloneDrive for Daemon Tools, PDF-XChange Viewer for Foxit Reader and XnView for Irfanview. Let me finish by saying that one of my favorite programs is the excellent and ad-supported Weather Watcher :) I don’t want to turn this into a debate about freeware-adware. Everybody’s points are very clear now and I won’t comment again here. I wish I could post without voting, but I can’t, so I’ll give the program five stars this time since it’s the closest to its current average. |

I suspect witchery or some kind of magic. It just seems impossible to get all uTorrents features into 170 kb. And it's a Bit Torrent client!!! They are supposed to be 40+ megs big, written in java AND require .net all the while eating up 10-20% cpu cycles. Oh and it's free too. Simply amazing. Download this now. It doesn't spam your startup items, takes up miniscule hard drive space, and is just the best at what it does. Even if you don't use torrents now, download it anyway. Why risk needing to get a torrent client later and getting stuck with one of those "other" bit clients. |

i must say i was very dubious about making the switch from BitTorrent 4.20.0 to uTorrent 1.5(then on to 1.6),but i must say it was a wise choice.it has every feature i could possibly want! my two favourites are the checkbox list, where you can choose which pieces to download(and not to download)in the torrent;and the download bar, which can be placed anywhere on your screen, allowing you to keep an eye on your download while uTorrent is minimised.i also like the new progress bar in the interface, though that has the added option of being able to be enabled ar disabled. fast, clean, effective, low cpu usage, nice interface, plenty of features. no doubt the best BitTorrent client for windows! |

No problem noticed on this release. Still the best torrent client ever made !! I worked on the French translation on the first versions and continue testing it on their forum. No spy or crap thing in it. Allowed by all the private trackers I use (Halite and Bitspirit aren't). If you look for a simple software then this is the best or use the good alternative Azureus. But for people critisizing µTorrent, please review it about it's performances and contents. Please don't talk about your dreams you had the day before seeing the cops coming to your home with the FBI...You're downloading too many movies ;-) |

To be fair I just tried Vuze. It torrented OK but there's so much stuff going on, I felt I was in an expensive luxury store and I couldn't buy something basic like a pair of jeans which is all I wanted. I hear that the add-ons are appreciated by some. But I really can't think of anything I'd like to add on! uTorrent lets me download when, how and where I like. Its (super)light, configurable, gives me great info on what's going on - and I don't have to learn anything and it stays right out of the way. One of the lightest and most essential apps on my set-up (and on my Linux set-up too [under Wine]). |

Great torrent program, I was a long term user of Azureus, but I've made the switch. It is one of the only bit torrent programs I can use while playing a game and not have a big hit on ping times or framerate. Not that I do that very often though :P In response to tremens: cons 1. depends on windows for disk cache, so the HD seems to be hit harder than with other clients(the extra RAM of other clients does serve a purpose) bring on the flaming :) There are settings in advanced which can change this if it is a problem. net.low_cpu can be set to false and diskio.write_queue_size can be set to a value (I used 3000) 2. not opensource Agreed, I wish it was... 3. completely dependant on the windows api Also agreed, although it will run (somewhat buggy) under wine. 4. no peer exchange I think Azureus is the only client which currently has this (could be wrong I haven't tried other mainstream clients in a long time), but UTorrent is supposed to be implementing this in the future from what I read on their forums. 5. mainline dht still lags behind azureus' I disagree, I find the DHT functionality on Utorrent is equal to that of azureus, the reason you may not be seeing as many peers is because of the lack of Peer Exchange. |

UTORRENT dosen't include toolbar! If it would include then it wouldn't fit in the 300kb microtorrent setup! ASK Toolbar is downloaded separately when user doesn't read carefully. *ASK Toolbar is meant for more income when people don't got any other way to donate* |

Softpedia is bulls***. The toolbar is optional, and is easily ignored by people paying attention to the install process. If you are NOT paying attention, or do not know how avoid installing optional components that are not required to complete installation, you might want to learn a bit more about such things before using a peer-to-peer file distribution application. |

µTorrent keeps getting better. The 1.8 beta 1 build 8912 is the result of a 4 month public alpha testing. It includes everything you expect from uT (being small, and feature-filled) and even has some added goodies due to request. These include: magnet support, queue thresholds for fully utilizing your connection, and a clean-up of the interface allowing RSS and torrents in the same listview. No uT does not include all the features of the plugin-based Azureus (Does uT support plugins... but the WebUI API is so versatile you don't need to be at your computer or even have the main GUI opened to manipulate torrents) however nothing which adds utility is really lacking. |

uTorrent rocks. I've EXTENSIVELY compared uTorrent to Azureus over a period of 2 years. I have several times used the SAME downloads and monitored the results in Azureus, then REASSIGNED the SAME torrents to uTorrent etc. I monitored: 1) CPU usage 2) Memory 3) Download Speeds I also compared usability. uTorrent has been beating Azureus solidly for a year. Even at 350kB/s upload and 70kB/s download with a total of 10 files uTorrent only averaged 1-2% and sometimes it registered 0% as it must have been less than 0.5%. It does NOT have a memory leak. It uses some RAM to optimize read/writes to the hard drive. If you are low on RAM you can make some changes. **I haven't had a single issue in a year with over 500GB of transfers. Settings. (I'd copy these if I were you): 1) Start in "stopped mode" 2) Make a directory called "Torrent Downloads" or similar, then make subfolders like "Downloading" and "Completed", then make your links in Preferences so your completed files move to your Completed folder. Much easier to keep track of. 3) **Use a second hard drive for your downloads. The hard drive usage will severely impact your PC experience. An absolute MUST. 4) 5 downloads is sometimes optimal. It varies slightly so experiment but my experience is that 6 or more will actually become slower. (May depend on Modem etc.) 5) Not a SETTING, but many ROUTER's will limit your download speed if you have multiple downloads. One download might be fine but four might drop your speed in half. Solution is to buy a FASTER router, use a SWITCH instead (slightly less secure but what I use now) or hook straight to the modem (no one else hooked to the system can use it.) 7) "Pre-allocate all files" 8) DO NOT check "use *.ut!" extension. You can often preview samples enough to see quality once they reach 60% and you should have your files set to MOVE to the "Completed" folder so there's no confusion. (Not a big deal if you do select this) Windows stuff: 1) make sure to use "Cool 'n Quiet" (AMD) or Intel equivalent. Double-check using appropriate tool to see the CPU freq and power drop when not needed. (need drivers from site, set power to "Minimal power Management, may need AMD dual-core optimizer and a monitoring tool) 2) Turn the hard drives OFF after 30 minutes or so (if 2 drives then non-uTorrent drive will shut off when not needed.) 3) Play around with on-board fan control settings through BIOS and settings. It makes a HUGE difference. *Note: AMD "screwed-up?" and released many new Fan/Heatsink combos with dual-core CPU's that have a fan with its own speed control. This conflicts with on-board controls. You can turn OFF your onboard controls but the minimum FAN is set way too high. The only solution is to switch fans with a compatible earlier model that doesn't have speed control built in or buy a solution like the "Sonic Tower" instead. 4) Always double-check to ensure you have the latest drivers. Especially check the Motherboard manufacturer to see if your System drivers are up to date. If you know your manufacturer (like nVidia) you are sometimes better to go to the nVidia site instead. Many people have degraded performance by simply installing Windows which may or may not install the optimal drivers. Motherboard CD's are frequently out of date by the time you open the box so I always go to the website and download them. (be VERY careful to ensure you don't try to install the wrong drivers) And "Bigmama", I'm sorry to be blunt but you are just wrong. uTorrent should run very well even on low-end systems. |

"azureus is a professional tool, utorrent is just for n00bies." Is that supposed to be some kind of joke? Because it's not funny. You can't even compare uTorrent to Azureus, it's just not fair. uTorrent is in a whole other class. Azureus a professional tool? Quite the opposite. It's a bloated piece of sh*t with lots of useless eye candy that gets old real fast. Last time I tried Azureus, it was using ~40MB of RAM just sitting idle, without any torrents loaded. Java sucks, get over it. Any program that relies on Java is crap. I don't need a bunch of pretty graphs and fancy user interface. I need something that works, and works well. That's why I use uTorrent over all other torrent clients. Like I said, nothing even comes close. |

I realy don't understand people giving this app (1) and referring to that azerous torrent client. By the way, uTorrent (even the beta versions) works with my different enviorments, virtual, sandboxed, normal, tweaked registry , and I'm a developer, so that is a HUGE plus! |

This program just gets better and better... Blaxima, if your friend got a letter from their ISP, it was for the content they were downloading, not the method or client they were using. That letter had nothing to do with utorrent and everything to do with your friend likely downloading content that they didn't have the right to. |

Definitely the best bit torrent client out there. Runs great on Vista. Hopefully more people will start running uTorrent instead of the rest of the crap that's out there. I'm thankful I can still use my computer, unlike other programs where I would have to leave my computer alone while it was downloading because it was sooooo slow! uTorrent won't eat up your CPU, so you don't mind leaving the latest Linux distro or whatever seeding for others. |

Best torrent client.. EVER! First time I got it, I was very sceptic. 100kb? What could that do. I was used to +4mb install applications. But, uTorrent has me forever. It never uses any cpu at all. Atm it uses ~4mb of ram with some 8 torrents. Great application. Only ignorants and fools would use anything else. Good for competetion though. |

Well if course it gonna slow down your internet if its using it, its not frikin magic even tho it seems like it, cause its so good. If your connection cant handle it just lower your setting in max connections/downloads/uploads/dwnload and upload bandwith. Fantastic program btw |
| anomoly | Jan 30, 2006 | 1.4.1 Beta Build 411 | ![]() 5 out of 5 |
well, looking at the connection options I was not impressed. It simply limits the number of ups & downs. I don't ever use it as I like the ability to have as many as 8-10 torrents running if I like. I thought that it may be better if you simply could tell it what your max up & down speeds were, & it would divide this bandwith by the number of torrents open (& active), also possibly allowing for any regular surfing. Sometimes I specify specific bandwith settings on a torrent to torrent basis if I want one to upload slower or about the same speed as another. Ergo, it seems in order be able to surf easier you almost have to tell it what each torrents speeds should be based upon your known max speeds (dividing this by # of torrents). I really don't care about that but would like to see udp support eventually. I also like the improved torrent handling. Client only removes a torrent when you say, not when you shutdown. I also do not like at all the dat files it puts in a specific folder (ap data) on my c drive. This needs to be kept in a user specified place. This info is not mentioned in the client options & I was very surprised to see this folder created with absolutely no knowledge that it even existed (delete it & utorrent goes back to a first run state). This however may well be one small price to pay for the best client ever created. |

A good program, although it saturates my internet connection, hence slowing down web page loading, when running on one or two torrents. Dunno why it does it, but other than that, a great client. lmao FFS :D the most stupid comment I have ever read. every single torrent program slows download your internet connection, because they can't download anything without using the internet connection bandwith. if you don't want it to slow down your internet connection simply don't use it when you are surfing or set the max downloading speed to a lower speed, so you can get some bandwith to spear for the internet :D |

If I were to compare this to Azureus and Bitcomet I would have to rate this higher than both. That goes without saying that those other clients have more features and may be a little more mature in their developmental stages. I've found that Azureus is great to use in short spurts but for running the program after days my computer would slow down to an unbearable crawl. I also found the same with Bitcomet; but not as bad. Bitcomet was simply a decent client that I'd likely to be using right now if it wasn't for uTorrent. I've found that uTorrent uses very little memory: 2,680k right now. Pretty incredible considering what the program is doing. I rarely notice its effects on any other application. But of course, if I were to download quite a bit of torrents at once, there is no client I know of thats perfect. Anyways, I give uTorrent a thumbs up for its low memory usage, frequency of updates, low cpu usage, and functionality. |

After using this little puppy I can't ask myself what were other developers thinking when developing various BitTorrent clients. Look At Bittorent Original client(terrible interface, no manager window...), Azureus(wow this one is like putting SUV seats with cooling/heating/massaging/LCD displays..... into mini Morris just to get from A to B-ludicrous).... µTorrent got everything right, simple interface, simple options, uses no resources....only thing missing is DHT and that is coming in very near future. Masterpiece. |

OMG! I've been using azureus for years, and no other torrent client has even come close to it in those years.. until today when i discovered µTorrent! I didn't know of it's existence and i feel so stupid for not to have been searching harder after alternatives (i was already quite happy with azures though it needed a lot of work, memory and cpu consumption wise) but be sure i've done them all and this really, really beats them all.. I might be a bit hasty with my review since i only have it 10 min. lol but it already gives me such a good feeling that i had to write smth.. So for now, a nice 5 will do :) |

This is simply amazing as a Bit Torrent client. It's the only bit torrent client I have tried that didn't hog system resources and CPU cycles. The program is only 94k! I don't know how they crammed a full featured bit torrent client into 94k but all the clients should be put on notice. Don't forget to download this directly into your programs folder or wherever you want it installed. As the download is the only installation process you go through. |

Why should you use uTorrent? 1. 94KB Standalone application with no installation required! 2. Full of the features that BitComet and Azuerus and so on have 3. Small footprint. For me, Azuerus used to take upto 80 MB, Bitcomet 40-60 MB, uTorrent... wait for it... 4MB! 4MB! No sluggishness at all! 4. Ability to select to select individual files to download, unfortuanely it is like Azuerus in this sense that BitComet, but this is such a SMALL down point! 5. I've even gone and removed BitComet! ...4MB! |

utorrent is my torrent program of choice. everything else includes too many features that i don't use or have much use for or slow my system down because of all its uses. i among several thousands of others refused to use utorrent when it was bought out by bittorrent. i did not upgrade for the reasons given here, that they could now track users better because they now had direct access to the code. and so i stayed with the 1.6 beta. i always read the reviews here to see what was going on with it, but i never upgraded. some time later, my dad got into torrents, so i directed him to utorrent. as a test case, i had him get the latest version at the time, 1.7x beta. and guess what, nothing happened. no c&d letters, no messages from our isp, nothing. i didn't upgrade then. it was only after reading more reviews on the 1.8 version that i finally decided to upgrade. other than the install package (that i downloaded from utorrent's website) that i did not like, and the overall revised look that i don't like, i don't see any real difference between what i was using and what i have now. back then i found that there was nothing wrong with it and it did as advertised. i still find that still applies. it's still a 5 star program. i do still have 1.6.1 beta, and i'm probably always going to use that until there is some technical reason why i can't because i find that sometimes it works better than the current version and i like the look of it. |

All the claims below are false, there is no new programmer, Ludvig Strigeus is still developing µTorrent, he is NOT on payroll from the RIAA, merely made a millionaire by the Bittorent company buying his project. µTorrent is safe as always and is DRM free, no worries. The thing about µTorrent is that despite it's tiny size, they have still managed to make the interface easy to understand and pleasant looking. It's also surprisingly configurable too. |

This client absolutely rocks! Used to use ABC, BitComet, (not azureus - hate laggy Java) 24/7 , but µTorrent is just the best client out there now. Hope author will keep it this way - small, powerful, simple. Auto-update from previous ver. works perfect. |

Absolutely stellar app. I have completely abandoned Azureus and the like for uTorrent. IMHO the best bittorrent app out there. |

Ahh...Good old C++, with all the features of azeurues(or however spell it)and a similar interface, in an incredibly small file, very low memory usage, not bloated by any means. Fast, small, simple, the way bittorent clients are supposed to be. |

Amazing piece of software does everything you would expect from a high end torrent client such as Azerus, but it doesn’t hog resources as azerus does. And it only takes up 94kb's of disk space. It keeps getting better, and better! |

Not only of bittorent clients, but in general this is how software should be. Does not require an installer, simply obvious use, small size, incredibly well featured, fast inerface, and all around the best bittorent client available. I love it, download now. |

Excellent software, compact & little memory usage. Functionality is not as complicated as Azureus but it has everything a bird should have. My Azureus cosumes up to 500MB the last time I did it. With the same amount of torrents, uTorrent only did close to 14MB. Highly recommended!! |

Love uTorrent, switched from Azureus and never went back. I do miss the RSS Feed plugin, but that's about it. For those wanting the changelog but not ambitious enough to go to the download page on the site: http://utorrent.com/down...a-unicode-build-360.txt |

the only thing that was missing in µtorrent was lack of unicode support. since this version has it -so now it becomes by far the best torrent software in the world |
| DudeBoyz | Dec 9, 2005 | 1.2.3 Beta Build 360 | ![]() 5 out of 5 |
This is actually NOT a nightly build, but a true beta. Final release should be coming soon, once the Unicode implementation is more thoroughly tested. This version seems to have fixed the bug on XP that prevented files from being moved to a user specified folder after download was completed. Works equally well on 9x and XP, at least in terms of basic functionality. I've been testing it like crazy and participating on the Utorrent forums, and the fact that they were able to implement UNICODE on XP and come right back and restore 9x functionality at the request of users is awesome. That that they have actually maintained stability while doing so is also awesome. Matb_TePe3a - you need to stop hating on Utorrent unfairly. Have you even tested Utorrent? It's much more stable than almost any build that Azureus typically puts out. Final Azureus releases tend to be much more stable than their own nightly builds are, though. If you have an axe to grind, do it elsewhere, cause as anyone who actually TESTS Utorrent knows, it is usually a very stable, very functional product, even in Beta. If you actually spent time working with Utorrent and testing it, and then found legit stability issues that were causing problems with how it functions, that would be cool. But slamming it just out of spite, with no actual testing, that is simply irresponsible. Posts of that nature should have no place on a site like this. Utorrent beta 360 uses far less memory than many clients do, uses less than 120k of disk space, and has the core features that most people need and crave. It now supports DHT and Unicode, has the ability to move files to a new folder when the download is finished, is much easier to configure than either Bit Spirit or Azureus. Both Bit Spirit and Azureus need over 5 meg of space, and Azureus also needs Java and all of the disk space and computational overhead that it requires. Given all of this, and the fact that Beta 360 is seemingly quite stable, how can you not give it a score of 4 or even 5? FOLLOW-UP - giving it a mock score of 5 out of spite is not helpful either. Why don't you just TEST the thing and give it a fair score based upon what you find? If you test and think it sucks, post a 2 or 3 or even a 1. If you test it and find it is actually good, give it a 4 or 5 maybe. Please - just do some actual testing and give it a fair score, ok? --------- As for Don Juan, there may be some issues with speed. I had to change my default port address to like 50,000 or so, then make sure that port was forwarded to the IP addy of the computer I was running it on. For some reason, anything in the 30,000 range did not work well. Perhaps my ISP filters those? Also, I have a 1.5m/384k ADSL and found if I limited my upload speed to 30kB instead of letting it run at full speed, my bandwidth saturation was greatly reduced and I actually started getting much better performance. To test speed, you may want to go to piratebay.org and test some of the files from their top 100, ones like TV episodes from ABC, NBC, etc. that have lots of seeders. That can help give you a fair representation. I usually leave Utorrent settings totally stock except for that 30kB thing, and I try to download 2 files at at time when I'm testing. As for cross platform, I agree. It would be GREAT to see this on Linux and OS X. I'm not sure I'd take a point away for that, but I do understand your position and think your point is just as valid as mine. :) Hope that your continued use and adjusting of the product helps you get better performance. Good luck. |

i agree with dudeboyz... i have been thoroughly testing every release for the past month or so and there's been at least 5 or 6 betas and they've all been stable and 100% functional... my only complaint was that sometimes files weren't moved after being downloaded but that seems to be fixed now... there could also be an option to delete or not cancelled downloads... sometimes i just cancel a torrent and all the files stay in the download directory and i have to clean it up manually... |

Don Juan is cr@p ? wtf is the downloading speed thing about? Downloading speed isn't just depending on the programs it depents on the torrent you are downloading too. try download a torrent while there is no peers no seeders with Azureus see if you can get a high speed downloading? and also since utorrent doesn't suck all the systerm resouces and therefore you can multitask, and the systerm never slows down. Can you do that all with Asureus? sucking up all the RAMs and CPU, try to play Doom3 while you are downloading stuff with Azureus. |

Absolutely excellent torrent client - small and fully-featured. There's one bug in it that they don't seem to want to (or be able to?) fix - when you have the option selected to rename a torrent when it is autoloaded (to .torrent.loaded), when you subsequently select to delete torrent and data, the data is deleted but the .loaded file remains instead of being deleted, leaving shrapnel in your incoming directory to be deleted manually. I'll give it a 5 anyway. |

The best!! I was using Bitcomet which worked great (and almost the same), but Bitcomet would not seed properly when the download completed so my ratio kept dropping. Utorrent works perfectly. Stop reviewing this version for its bad things as it's an alpha release...There's a forum to post these types of commentaries. I personnally wait for a beta version to start testing it really. The third choice is Deluge and then BitSpirit but not allowed on all the trackers. |

Looks like this is the 1.8.3 stable since this is what you get when you click "download uTorrent" on their main page, now. But my 1.8.2 client doesn't automatically update to 1.8.3 yet. I guess it'll be within the next couple of days, if not sooner. No problems at all so far. Still as fast and light as ever. Changes from 1.8.2: - Change: Tweaks to Ask toolbar offer - Fix: make "alternate upload rate when seeding" apply when the seeding is set by the scheduler - Fix: align "Web Seeds" in torrent creation dialog - Fix: translated strings in uninstaller - Fix: http seeds would not reconnect after stopping and starting torrent - Fix: http seed for multifile torrents - Feature: New installer with EULA, file association - Fix: uTP issue on low-latency high-throughput networks - Fix: copying long filenames to the clipboard no longer results in garbage or crash - Fix: create torrent layout - Fix: fixed web seed support for multi-file torrents - Change: torrent whose "Force Recheck" is greyed out will not recheck when asked through multi-torrent selections - Fix: when adding torrents through URLs via commandline, we would always open the add torrent dialog - Fix: handle multi file torrents with web seed urls that incorrectly don't end with a slash - Fix: make sure web seed urls end with a slash for multifile torrents - Fix: setup Vista firewall - Fix: remove settings on Vista during un-installation - Fix: uTP packet size fix. Sometimes it would send packets exceeding MTU. Fixes long standing rate oscillations. - Change: rss.feed_as_default_label controls whether a torrent added from a feed is given the feed's name as a label - Fix: fixed crash when receiving a malformed PEX message - Fix: evades potential crash when reporting crashdumps - Fix: crash when parsing some magnet uri components without values - Fix: crash when starting a torrent in super seed mode and connecting to peers before it's completely loaded - Change: Scam site warning in installer - Change: Installer UI checkbox whether to install or run standalone - Change: Left align numeric fields in settings - Fix: Remember category list selection after adding a torrent - Fix: download rate limiter for uTP connections - Change: Disabled feed icon has precedence over broken feed icon - Fix: DHT bootstrap failures now have an exponential back-off - Fix: uTP would not ramp up its rate fast enough - Change: .torrent association not a factor in displaying the installer - Fix: remove file association registry keys on uninstall - Fix: invalid encoding of non-ascii urls in web seeds - Fix: uTP fix when receiving acks for old packets - Fix: uTP variable packet size bug - Change: link to EULA in installer - Fix: don't wait indefinitely for trackers and UPnP when shutting down (two new advanced options) - Change: Enable DEP Compatibility and Image Randomization - Fix: default download folder was not used when using the WebUI - Fix: fixed crash bug when some invalid uTP packets were received - Fix: improved TCP/uTP mixed mode - Fix: removed limit of 100 running torrents - Change: support some older skins - Fix: .dat file memory leak - Fix: Torrent create bug introduced while optimizing file order - Change: Preserve file order text - Fix: Prompt for .torrent association with new installs - Change: Default bt.graceful_shutdown=true and diskio.no_zero=true - Fix: Integrity check .dat files after saving. Network saturation. hmm. would be nice to have a pc (& connection to go with it) dedicated to each & every task. Oh, back to the real world. Your 'network' is dependent on you. If there were any serious connection 'problems', it would have been addressed. All I see are weak complaints about why a few are not satisfied with speeds they are getting. I installed Az yesterday 2-11 & after attempting to use it with safepeer, shut it down. When I tried to uninstall it, it refused. (safepeer is lame & so is az to make a long story short) And this is utorrent's stongest competition? Utorrent does not have one folks. |

The best! Low CPU usage (typically 1-4% only). My Athlon 64 X2 4800+ CPU is currently downloading 10 files at a bandwidth of 420kB/s and registers ONLY 1%. Wow! I've downloaded far too much stuff with no problems. I replaced Azureus and will never look back. uTorrent used to have some issues but I've been using it constantly for over 18 months with no issues. Memory leak? I don't think so. The program typically uses up to 50MB of RAM to optimize your experience. You can change some settings to reduce RAM if absolutely necessary. For example, RAM is used to reduce hard drive tasks. This program is pretty close to perfect. **I recommend people use their 2nd hard drive as the download location otherwise many tasks will be slowed due to hard drive access. Since there is very little CPU usage you can have high download speeds with basically NO impact on your gaming or other tasks. |

This is a great little program! I can't believe its as small as it is, requires no installed commitment and has so much to offer! I am looking forward to a few security features though: SSL tracker and torrent transfers, login/pass tracker and torrent support etc. etc. I would also like to mention alongside "urbanriot" that he raises a very strong point. Although uTorrent does look a bit like Azureus on the surface they are two completely different breeds of BT clients. Azureus is a very powerful client/tracker system that has proven a very powerful large scale BT solution. I have recently seen an Azureus tracker hosting /seeding 10000+ torrents (multiple files) the group running it said Az was yet still under 150MB in memory. The only reason I point this out is because many people compare both applications head to head but the comparison draws to a close as you list off the function/features between both software solutions. uTorrent is a great solution for: new BT users, turnkey BT transactions and users who are sporting older PC hardware. While Azureus would please the power users or those seeking a more advanced BT solution. Great job on uTorrent! |

Do you know that you can switch users without quiting all apps on your profile ??? I do this all the time when my sis want to goof around net ;) I like utorrent for small memory footprint i can do everything on my comp, even play games with utorrent running. I respect azureus as i use it on my linux server as a console, with webui support, its best combo and works flawless under linux, i think problems with azureus are from buggy windows java support...... But on my windows comp i haven't launched azureus from a long time, because of utorrent - that means something !!! PS. I don't like utorrent new limit on upload to download, it should be like azureus 5KB/s upload to unlimited download. I share my link, so i have to cap upload at day to minimum, i can do that because i mainly use private trackers, where there are only seeders, not many leechers or no at all. I seed only things that have high demand, i don't like capping my download - this reminds me emule :-/ |

uTorrent is just as good as Azureus, it has all the features that I would want from a bittorrent client. Azureus is bloat - 99% of the plugins and a lot of the core stuff are just useless. What the hell is the swarm diagram for? It's totally useless because you can't even read it. uTorrent offers most, if not all, of Azureus's _useful_ features. That makes uTorrent just as good, if not better due to the efficiency of it, as Azureus. |

Since how did all these "security" issues just popup right after Bittorrent inc. "bought" utorrent? Any closed source p2p program has the potential for the same issues that MIGHT exist and you cant be sure any of it unless you actually see the source code and understand it. Im not exactly sure what kind of "security" p2p people really expect to have in the first place. Security against what? Any closed source program has the potential to be infested with something "bad" but as far as utorrent goes, ive not seen a single reason why anyone would switch to another closed source program. At least utorrent is not being banned from every tracker every two months. Unlike "Azureus" or Bitcomet etc. |

(bangs head on desk repeatedly) I really don't understand how so much misinformation could have spread so fast and so widely about this. Seriously: 574KB? Where could that number have even come from? This build and the last couple I've seen have all been about 173KB; no more. So the creator of the Bittorrent protocol bought uTorrent, and he does some contract work for some movie studios who happen to be members of the Motion Picture Association of America involving the distribution of some of their movies using Bittorrent. To jump, from this information ALONE, to the conclusion that uTorrent is now spyware is nothing short of ludicrous. If you have any, ANY actual evidence that uTorrent is behaving suspiciously (that hasn't already been thoroughly debunked here), please bring it forward. But the truth is that this software and its activity has been under a high-powered microscope since it changed hands, and nobody has been able to find a SHRED of evidence that it's performing in any way other than advertised. This build fixes some crashing and language problems some people were having. It works as well as ever for me. |

I agree with Matt Lee about Deluge which is one of the best torrent client. Halite is at his beggining and remember me the birth of µtorrent. BUT don't review µtorrent because for you this one or this one is better. µTorrent is actually the best because of its features and still sooooo light...When the FBI will come to my house then maybe I will change my mind about this software. Most private trackers I use are fully compatible with any µtorrent version !! like crappy Java Azureus, Halite and Deluge ! But for those looking for a similiar software, I think Deluge is not too far !! |

Best BitTorrent client available. There are a few bugs, since this is an alpha, but things seem to be shaping up nicely. As for those who complain that there is a back door in the program (this is false!), the only thing the program does is check for updates - if you have that option enabled. I've logged and gone through all my uTorrent firewall packets for over a week. This is a safe program and is does a very good job. |

I've been using it for awhile and never experienced network overflow or high consumption of any other resources. Even with 7-8 simultaneous downloads/uploads it doesn't noticeably slow down Internet connection as oppose to some other clients. Could it be firewall settings in previous reviewing person machine that causes problem? Or some incompatibility issue perhaps? |

Whenever I get a lot of emails on one subject, it inevitably means something surprisingly great or incredibly, tragically awful has happened. So when emails regarding a Donnie Darko sequel started rushing in, I assumed it was the prior: eager fans of the cult film alerting me to how excited I should be that Richard Kelly was returning to his single hit rather than attempting further Southland Tales. But as I looked closer at the emails, a sadder, angrier tone emerged. The subject wasn't "Donnie Darko 2!!!!", it was "Donnie Darko 2????" Another read, "Positive outcome unlikely." What the hey? If college taught me anything, it's that everyone but me in college loved Donnie Darko, or at least pretended to so they wouldn't be accused of "not getting it." Surely there must be a reason for this sudden backlash against a sequel. Hmm, let's take a look. It's called S. Darko, and it's about Donnie's sister. That makes sense, given that Donnie dies. They got the same actress to return to the role--always a good sign. Should be fine as long as they get a strong supporting cast like... a guy from Gossip Girl, someone from Step Up 2 the Streets, and the tall-haired fellow from Dragonball? All right, I guess that works, if Richard Kelly thinks he can pull it off with... Oh, Kelly isn't involved in any capacity? Well, so long as someone else with a similarly unique vision takes over, like... Chris Fisher, director of Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders and an episode of NBC's Chuck? OK. This is doomed. |

i love how people complain about the updates. like they have no self control over choosing to update or not. if you don't want to update more than once a week or month, then don't.. it really is as easy as that. but the best part.. is that it literally takes less than 30 seconds to fully download/install/integrate utorrent (and that's including the 5 second download wait).. meaning that you people who complain about the updates are complaining about something that you could do 3 or 4 times over in the amount of time it took you to write up a complaint in the first place. if you don't like utorrent, or prefer another client to it, more power to you and all that. but to complain about something so simple my grandma could do it in her sleep.. its pathetic. |

Both this & az have similar capabilities which is nice considering the # of az users. This 'fanboy' simply prefers a simpler setup & much simpler usability. 153kb exe with no installation necessary. Az could well have a better method of torrenting. I just don't like the way it acts when it starts or the way it feels in general. It's like letting a beast out of the box. It's ip blocking capabilities are nothing short of rediculous as it only allows you to add one at a time. Utorrent is just plain simple & allows me a choice of either protowall or safepeer, both of which beat hands down (imho) the plugin that az uses. Less is more for me. |
| SlugO83 | Mar 2, 2006 | 1.4.2 Beta Build 432 | ![]() 5 out of 5 |
Let me get this straight. You're giving uTorrent lower scores than it deserves just because you think it's updated too often? Then use the official version! It's still an excellent program. Ever tried running Azureus and a heavy game on your computer? It's not pretty atleast after a while. This is the best choice especially when you don't want to dedicate your computer just for downloading torrents. |

cyberia: A *Torrent user can use any port they want with their client. Likely a user you connected to was using a email port in order to get past ISP restrictions, and your security app can't really tell the difference. Just set it to ignore uTorrent and you'll be fine. |

@animalleecher Well, how about this... They closed the forum because the involved have already explained over and over again what the buy was all about - and how this will affect µTorrent. But, there are still people who try to make a point that the buy will make µTorrent include DRM (which whould be done exactly how???), or worse - µTorrent would start sending data about what you download to MPAA... Come on, be serious. This has been, is, and will continue to be a great torrent client. If you're afraid of something that might happen (even though, only God knows why anyone would do what you and others are suggesting is happening with the source-code to µTorrent) - stop using µTorrent. And, STOP spreading false information, to which you have absolutely no foundation. If you have ANY real documents or information which can substantiate your claims - please give the rest of us the possibility to read this. If you don't have any real facts och documents - but rather just a feeling that this is no good... Well, state that's the case - instead of trying to tell the rest of the world that they are wrong. If you don't like that people want to make money from their work - kudos Ludde - well, you'd better try to find some other planet to live on. And STOP rating the application based on you opinion of the company behind it! The ratings are for the APPLICATION! Myself - I prefer Azureus to µTorrent, but that's because I like the modularity. µTorrent is a great application, which uses few resources and has all the features a standard user needs. That's it, and that's that. |

| Crypton | Apr 22, 2007 | 1.7 Build 1355 Beta | ![]() 5 out of 5 |
@bigmama - uTorrent does not contain Spyware and SafePeer is only a false security blanket, you can get caught doing "illegal" downloading just as easy using it or not. It is just a matter of what your getting and whos tagging people. Besides, if you are that worried, you can always use Protowall/PeerGuardian, afterall SafePeer just uses the same database anyhow. uTorrent can work just as well speed wise, but you need to know how to setup the connection according to your up/down speed. (no "autospeed like AZ). I get great speeds on uTorrent, actually, since I tweaked my up limit a bit after testing my line a few times, I have been getting better speeds on uTorrent that I had on AZ even with or without the autospeed plug. uTorrent also uses significantly less resources and so you will have better results if running other programs while uTorrent is running. In most cases Azureus is ideal for an extra PC in which you don't plan on using much while downloading. |

Give me a break! The same people who once praised this fine BT client, now want to slander it because of a deal that will in no way affect µTorrent. Go take a Prozac. µTorrent is the best client there is, period. It has always performed flawlessly and doesn't eat all your memory like several I could mention. It's very small in size, even uncompressed. 99% of all executables out there are compressed...so what? A great application! I would give it a "10" if it was available in the dropdown. |

| JigPu | Mar 7, 2006 | 1.4.2 Build 434 Beta | ![]() 5 out of 5 |
...What exactly does Ludvig's contract have ANYTHING to do with uTorrent? He signed up to develop an application for them. Perhaps he'll make some 3vi1 piece of anti-piracy/anti-P2P software (even if he claims otherwise), but PeerFactor has NO influence over uTorrent and its code. "According to a statement by PeerFactor, the lead developer of µTorrent, Ludvig Strigeus, has agreed to help develop “new content distribution applications on the Web”." "By developing the PeerFactor software, which uses the BitTorrent protocol, Strigeus will be entitled to a share of any advertising revenue generated by the final product." "This is not of concern to Strigeus, who told Slyck News, “This doesn't affect µTorrent, it's just a side project. If people like to be paranoid, I won't stop them.”" http://www.slyck.com/news.php?story=1117 Mumoto -- Yeah, he's using PECompact to shrink the .exe, but when uncompressed its still only a few hundred K (200 I believe), not a few MB. Its not as tiny as BitTornado, but the extra features packed into the few extra KB are well worth it IMHO. To each his own :) *EDIT: Dang. Why in the world can't I write something with no rating? |

It is said you should keep your friends close & your enemies closer. When this client was intro'd, I remember it wanted to send anonymous usage stats back to the web. As long as you do not allow auto update, dht, & peer exchange, you "should" be ok (??). I sure hope I am right |

Seems a few people have paranoia using uTorrent. Here are some suggestions: Have your doctor help you with anxiety/paranoia; there's medications out there to help you, and discontinue using uTorrent. This is great for torrents since it's small and very functional. As previously mentioned, if you believe there's some sort of problem with uTorrent than switch back to Azeurus or whatever you were using before. uTorrent is small, functional, constantly updated to fix bugs and add features. I'm happy with it as are many other users. Instead of spewing paranoia, it might be a better option to rate the program on it's benefits and advantages. |

You've just gotta admit it, no matter what the program is the best. I can see your point of you being scared if your doing something wrong with utorrent, but thats your choice. He's made a perfecly good program which he's PECompact compress the app, not because he wants it smaller but the real reason of someone uncompiling it and stealing his work. Enough said. Lets remember to review the software and not our own bones! |

i have been using BitTorrent 4.20.0 until today, when i switched to uTorrent. BitTorrent is a very nifty program, with a few of the features that uTorrent has. but uTorrent has the features displayed in a more useful way,as well as additional features. its also very fast. nice user interface, nice low cpu usage. and it has a Torrent Force Start that works instantaneously!!!! |

echohead, uTorrent is lighter than Halite, anyone, nowadays that difference is not significant. IMHO uTorrent is the best Torrent client, unless tou prefer it to be open source, in that case, Halite is the choice. Also remember that if you want an integrated one, since version 9, Opera supports Torrent downloads. |

http://www.fbmsoftware.c...et/application/uTorrent/ BAM, nothing wrong with it. No spyware or anything. You guys must be reading s*** from 2006 when they had something that showed ads...which was then removed. This is THE best torrent client there is, plain and simple. There's a reason it made the top level of the client lists. |

i can't form a solid opinion of a program when i can only use it for a day before it's updated...however i'm more than happy to get and use the latest version and i'm happy they are this dedicated to fixing bugs. some newer features (coloring every other line in the torrent list, changing upload speed for torrents after a certain ratio, always show tray icon, etc.) are pretty handy when you've got a bunch of torrents going at once. ever since a certain bug was fixed in build 377, everything has been smooth as your mom's butt, so there's nothing really holding this program back at this point. |
| Metshrine | Jan 1, 2006 | 1.3.1 Beta Build 389 | ![]() 5 out of 5 |
I figured I might as well review this client to add some diversity to the reviewers of this program; since every single time we get a new "beta" out we get the same person reviewing it seems. No offense to said reviewer, but I know as a reader, I only need to see a persons opinion once, unless they are commenting on a specific feature that is being fixed or added in a given beta release, and not a post that just states "This client rocks" or "The best" or "This client is freaking awesome", in order to get their opinion of the program. This client is what a majority of users want, from my experiences. Something small, fast, and memory efficient. While it lacks some of the advanced features of the more evolved clients, it does have enough to make it worthy of every day use. I like the fact that it is actively developed and cant wait to see what it looks like at 2.0 release. Good job utorrent guys. |

Great torrent application. Its the best for me anyway. I've had no problems with this client, and it's very quick to load and light on resources. No need for any other client for my use! Superb work and (currently) updated frequently. |
| kooshini | Jan 1, 2006 | 1.3.1 Beta Build 389 | ![]() 5 out of 5 |
These updates (as welcome as they are) are gettong a bit silly. I think thier next feature should make the program connect to the server and download via torrent or from the server itsself and ask you to install the new version, Or even better autoupdate in the background so you are always up to date with the latest version :) keep up the good work!! |
| Ampbeta | Jan 2, 2006 | 1.3.1 Beta Build 389 | ![]() 5 out of 5 |
pretty good program but a new feature i would suggest adding is a wizrd that you can specify your connection speed and such so it will configure the settings automatically so you can get the best downloading experiences with utorrent, other than that great program, great efforts on updating it often and fixing bugs, keep it coming fellas! |

| Xilon | Jan 1, 2006 | 1.3.1 Beta Build 389 | ![]() 5 out of 5 |
Why would you want to download a torrent of a 200kB file? You'd probably get more overhead than that :p When the client gets above a few mB then maybe a torrent would be ok to use. The client is definitely a great competitor for Azureus, especially since the whole client is ~200kB and uses no more than 3MB of RAM (on my computer). That's a definate advantage over Azureus. It may not have all the features that Azureus has but those features are one of the reason why Azureus is so slow... I mean who uses the swarm diagram thing? lol. Thankfully the dev team know what's bloat and what isn't :). |

It is the Best Torrent Client I have used. I choose it finally after testing several other clients. But honestly speaking, to be a light weight client (less than 200 MB in filesize) or engaging less RAM while operating are not very plus points as most of the users nowadays are sufficient in resources at least much more than what is saved here. I mean if the filesize would be 3MB instead of 170KB or the RAM utilized would be 40 MB instead of 4 MB, what would be the benefit as we mostly set for downloading while we go to sleep and not in an interactive mode. Instead if the author should concentrate to make it feature rich and as easy and auto-configurable as possible. I hate the manual Port Configurations and setting uploads limits manually. By now it should be automatic. To help the author simply post your required features available in other Clients (for example) as a request to him and let him consider them at his convenience. I really wish a torrent client could be as easier and simple as other P2P filesharing programs are like iMesh, Bearshare etc. |

Outstanding client. I don't quite get the purpose / benefit of the whole WebUI thing, but the fact that he can still add features like that and keep it so small and resource efficient is amazing. Well done indeed. Edit: Mirrebex - After they finalized v1.6, it was quite a bit before the new releases came out, but I do understand your point. I have had the same concerns about Azureus. While Utorrent isn't quite the "Nightly Build" thing that Azureus has been, it might not be a bad thing to hold back for more testing before releasing the next Utorrent beta. But I now understand, thanks in part to what eviljolly said as well as seeking info from others, that this feature has been long requested and is considered pretty darn important. I simply had not considered the need to dial in from work to update my torrents at home. |

Great Program! Combining it's functionality, size and resource usage I can say it's the best WINDOWS BitTorrent around. Unfortunately once a new version 1.7?? 2.0?? gets released under BitTorrent Inc. command it will most likely be full of crap and it will be worthless and will be time to get back to good (sometimes not that good) Azureus :P BTW GUYS!! For someone not using WebUI should I use 1.6 FINAL (build 174) or 1.6.1 BETA (build 483)?? |

uTorrent is still going strong. Dudeboyz, tsk tsk tsk. First of all, who cares if it isn't owned or developed by the original author anymore? Google Earth isn't and you seem to LOVE that program. It isn't even open source! What if they send out the places you visit and stuff you look at without you knowing? All of this is FUD and you know it. Just try and prove it. No one has come up with a shred of evidence uTorrent is doing anything wrong. Put your mind to something more creative instead of creating conspiracy stories. |

@photonboy: I can only say that i agree with you, after a few years of using torrent clients i have to say that you point out the differences here, ok there may be more differences but these are the highlights atleast if you compare the clients perfomancewise. I personally favour µTorrent since it's lower demands on my system which isn't the most powerful out there i can say but Azuerus runs nicely on it too but i guess it's just a preference issue. Both clients are great use which one you like. |

I finally tried the newest 1.7beta. I cant explain why, but speeds are faster than the old 1.6 version. So I agree with "ZenoLabs", just because there is lots of spyware out there doesn't make every program spyware. Especially when uTorrent is "hands-down" the best torrent client and updates usually improve software. |

I've done extensive comparisons between uTorrent and Azureus. uTorrent used to have issues and so did Azureus though both work fairly well now. However, for my test I collected 25 different torrents from a variety of sites (Demonoid, Piratebay and 4 more) and started to download. Long story short is uTorrent came out on top by a narrow margin and I could see no advantage to Azureus except for the version which uses the program Zudeo if you like that sort of thing. I'm baffled with negative comments regarding uTorrent. I've downloaded over 100GB with Azureus and probably at least 50GB now with uTorrent. I've used both on and off over two years. Example comparison of data collected over several days by periodic STOPPING and SWAPPING of torrents from Azureus to uTorrent and vice versa: Azureus: 145MB RAM 6% CPU 200kB/s average download uTorrent 42MB RAM 1% CPU 200kB/s average download *Your experience may differ due to your computer hardware or Torrent site so try both and try to find your own method of comparing. My specs are: Athlon 64 X2 4800+ 2GB RAM |

given the previous comment it's official that you're just trolling at this point but anyhow ... 1. so everything that's not open source is bad eh? guess you might as well just shut your pc off then. 2. if you want to block ip ranges why not block them at the router or firewall level? 3. anything running on java is going to take significant cycles/memory just from garbage collection alone. it's not even a contest as to which program is quicker, lighter, and more responsive. i've used nearly everything and this one blows everything else away. it's definetly worth a try. |

Excellent, small, lightweight - doesn't have all the features of other popular clients, but it's definately useful. I rarely download torrents, but when I do I would much rather have a 130kb stand-alone than having to install a memory-hungry app like Azureus. Maybe not as useful for those people who are downloading multiple torrents 24/7. soldier1st: Why would an installer be easier than a single stand alone exe? Surely simplicity is better for newbies? |

I've tried all the torrent clients out there, and while sometimes there is not much difference in speed between them, µTorrent combines the best of all of them. One has to commend the author that he didn't use one of the widely available graphic programming language which end up making the program bloated, but to combine speed, feature richness and leanness into an agreable package. |

It's not that no one understands your stance. It's that almost no one else is experiencing what you are experiencing, myself included. The other updates weren't just fancy features, and you need to realize that people were having actual problems _using_ the application, not just having simple speed problems. What good is speed if the thing crashes or doesn't work for some users? Many memory leaks have been plugged, stability has been improved. Almost everything has been given spit-shine ten times over, and it works near perfectly on Vista now (something you can't say about versions 1.6.1 and below). You're right, dedication isn't about ignoring facts. The BitTorrent team did not ignore the users who were reporting problems with old versions, and long-time bugs were corrected by their hands. They did not ignore Vista users. Speed: yes, it _is_ one of the most important metrics in determining what client is good, and I can't ignore the fact that the speed is as awesome now as it always has been; I still see µTorrent reaching my connection's maximum download rates regularly. Like I said earlier, testing is not as simple as measuring the speed of a torrent in one version, stopping it, and starting it in another version. BitTorrent isn't a protocol that is static enough for such a simple "test" to be valid. RC2: great as usual. |

Nice, now it works properly with Wine under Linux as well as on Vista, two things that can't be said for the pre-1.7 versions. I wonder if that'll finally satisfy the knee-jerk naysayers (I'm not criticizing those experiencing legitimate problems). Probably not. Still the leanest, meanest client out there when resource usage is a concern. It's as fast as ever for me, and I haven't had a single problem with the new versions on the four machines I regularly run it on. |

I don't know what is up with the bad reviews.. But this is the best Torrent client I have used (and I have used a lot). The program it self is VERY light weight in size and uses very little ram in comparison to other programs. Azureus is a great client and everything but it runs on Java so it uses far more CPU and ram. Utorrent is one of the fastest loading, least resource using client I have ever used. As far as download speed, there is no real way of benchmarking torrent speeds, most of the people who see a speed difference are having issues with Firewall settings or it is just coincidence. |

I just got the 358 build and tested it. It runs on Windows 9x no problem and is as lean and fast as ever. It also runs just fine in XP SP1 for me. This particular build, which allows for Unicode on 2K/XP while actually bringing back full 9x support is particularly worthy of praise. Outstanding job by the programmer(s) on maintaining stability and speed and enhancing the feature set and compatibility at the same time. Solid 5.0 effort on this one. Outstanding work, and in a very timely fashion. Well done indeed. I also REALLY do like BIT SPIRIT, but have to give Utorrent its due. BOTH are better than Azureus for almost all users though, imo. Unless you are a super power user in terms of torrents, I see no reason to continue to use Azureus over Utorrent or Bit Spirit. |

ytorrent kicks ass bitspirit is buggy (the latest released version seems to ignore hash checking, resulting in corrupt downloads now and then). ytorrent never stores corrupt data. besides, bitspirit havent been updated in a long time, i was using it myself for a long time until i found ytorrent, wich is now my client of choice which i recommend to all my friends. |

If the programers are reading the reviews heres a request how about adding a search but not a torrent site search but one that searches other users for torrents that they are seeding this way you never have to worry about unseeded torrents or going to a bunch of sites to find what your looking for. |

One thing I'm curious about is why the program tries to connect to http://66.98.196.181 (dh2.net) every time it opens. I would rather it were a place I specified so that I may treat it as a truly stand alone ap as well to increase security. It also has real-time transfer rate control and latency minimization. -- 2009-04-1: Version 1.9 (build 14981) - Fix: uTP would not ramp up its rate fast enough - Change: .torrent association not a factor in displaying the installer - Fix: remove file association registry keys on uninstall - Fix: invalid encoding of non-ascii urls in web seeds - Fix: uTP fix when receiving acks for old packets - Fix: uTP variable packet size bug - Change: link to EULA in installer - Change: added knob to set the uTP target delay (adjusts how hard to push uTP uploads) - Fix: don't wait indefinitely for trackers and UPnP when shutting down (two new advanced options) |

| MarcFou | Aug 14, 2008 | 1.8 Build 11813 | ![]() 5 out of 5 |
I have to confirm what borisf98 said. When upload rate is set to 5kb or lower, your download speed gets throttled. Uploading is what makes downloading work. If everyone set low or near nothing uplod speed, it would take forever to download something. So I agree with the penalty. Besides. Many P2P apps have been doing this for the longest time. Not a new concept. Overall uTorrent proves to be the best client out there. I recently began using the RSS feature and love it. |

Best torrent client, it even got the Tetris game! About the download throttling: If everyone sets the upload to 0 and download to unlimeted we would end with 0 in download as well, so by forcing people share at least something (like 5Kb/sek) is GOOD. |

This Program is Excellent. This is the Best Bittorrent Client out there. A close second is BitSpirit, but their development is slower and that client uses much more resources. It's so much an issue for me since I have a high end system, however, I could see others shying away for that reason. All in all, if you use bittorent give to two aforementioned a try. To those who claim about network saturation, bla bla bla. I bet your systems could use a lot of love. I bet if you spent an hour or two removing spyware and other useless stuff, updating everything from hardware firmwares, to device drivers, to all the other stuff that could take up ones life keeping up with (MINE) then your system would thank you for it. After all this, configuring your network and everthing else would also benefit. Maybe your network card, has new drivers, and some settings could be tweaked. Maybe one should update the firmware, clear the settings in their router to factory default and then re-setup the settings as this fixes alot. And if one can seriously say all this and still have problems, then your lying. As a last fix, backup important stuff, then format and do a fresh install of windows then update EVERYTHING THAT CAN POSSIBLE BE UPDATED! That includes, FIRMWARE, DRIVERS, SOFTWARE, etc. I fix alot of computers and some people simple destroy their system and complain when stuff don't work right. If you use a router, flash to latest firmware, reset factory defaults (clear nvram) and then resetup as i said before, this can fix alot of problems. uTorrent is great! Keep up the EXCELLENT WORK. |

You know the dev team doesn't really care that much about the features. Sure, they want to have good features in the program but it's not their first priority. I have no problems whatsoever with uTorrent nor have I ever had any. uTorrent has always been a quality client. You can't blame uTorrent for the DHT network having a low amount of users - it's more likely to be Azureus's fault since they created their own DHT network and most people used Azureus those days, hence most people are on that network and not on the mainline network on which uTorrent and Bitcomet are the most popular clients. From what I've heard Azureus is switching or adding support for the mainline DHT network anyway so that "problem" will soon be solved. |

BTW, Strigeus is still on board this project, even if he's not spending as much time with it as he did when he was the primary developer. Like the other guys said: don't listen to the conspiracy theories; they've been thoroughly debunked and have yet to provide a SINGLE shred of actual evidence showing this program does anything potentially malicious. An awesome torrent client. Been through a shed-load of torrent clients & stopped with BitSpirit for ages until I found this little stormer. Small, fast & does exactly what it says on the tin with no unnecessary whistles ‘n’ bells to hog heaps of resources. An update is probably already posted as I type this, as they seem to release one every 27 femto-seconds. :-) Good work! |

NaytmaN, when you accually know what your talking about maybe then review. This so called "CALL HOME" is easily disabled if you tell the program not to check for updates. And as far as virus, it's well know about false-positives. So please do more research before you review on a product that you know nothing about. And linkdup that url you pasted is OLD. 2006/03/07. Really some people should have there review abilites removed. |

NaytmaN: The results of the virus scan are because the EXE was packed... some virus scanners automatically flag packed executables as suspicious because it is easier for them to hold viruses which a virus scanner cannot find. It does NOT automatically mean they contain viruses. For a full virus report you would have to find the tool used to pack the EXE (in this case it's not UPX, dunno what was used) and unpack it and scan it again. I bet if you take a random EXE... explorer.exe for example... and scan it, and then pack it with UPX or something and scan it again, you'll get more warnings. Also I would be interested to read this post you mention, but I can't seem to find it. [Edit: If you do mean the check for updates, I did find an interview with the former dev where he describes that the only information sent is a random number which can't be used to do any more than figure out how many people use µTorrent... IE statistics.] I suppose I should put a real review in here somewhere: µTorrent is an excellent client. It supports multiple torrents, has a plethora of options, supports assigning priorities to torrents or individual files (although I wish you had more than three levels to work with, a numerical ranking system would be nice, then I just number the files in the order I'd want them to download in and go to bed). It is portable (make an empty "settings.dat" and place it in the same folder as µTorrent) and very small, making it a good client to carry on my thumb drive. The only thing that annoys me is that if you have multiple torrents with multiple files each (enough to make a scrollbar in the "Files" tab listview) then when you switch torrents the files listview always shows the top files... it would be nice if it remembered where in the listview I was looking at files last. Still, that's nitpicking. 5/5 |

Bittorrent devs on UDP transfers causing the sky to fall: "The article in the Register is utter nonsense - it completely mischaracterizes what we're trying to do with uTP (we're trying to roll out a protocol that is latency sensitive/performance neutral, NOT a greedy one that kills the internet). The key ideas in his article are: (1) that we implemented uTP purely to evade Bell Canada and Comcast throttling (2) we use raw UDP and didn't bother to implement any congestion control mechanism. Both of these are completely untrue." "In general uTP is designed to detect congestion and throttle back send rates as soon as congestion is spotted. It can do this as it continuously monitors the time it takes for a packet to be sent from one of our peers to another one of our peers. If the time taken for a packet to arrive starts to degrade we will infer that there may be congestion about to happen. It will throttle back accordingly. This contrasts with TCP which has a congestion control method that relies entirely on detecting packet loss before inferring that congestion may be occurring - this is ok, but by definition the problem has already happened at this point and will probably be spotted by the end user." "The point of uTP is to make BitTorrent protocol efficiently use available bandwidth if and only if other applications are not competing for the same bandwidth. Protocols that do not implement this will continue to send regardless (e.g. in the case of TCP until packet loss occurs). - this isn't going to solve all the problems on the internet, but it will make sure that congestion impacts to the end user experience will not be caused by our clients." This FUD about uTP is being spread by The Register in their usual scruple-deficient grubbing for page hits and by the author of the article, who is a well-known anti-network-neutrality and anti-P2P ideologue. Keep these obvious agendas in mind when sifting through their various scare tactics. |

µtorrent always worked well for me. ^_^ Metshrine: µtorrent has a built in limiter (external limiters would mess µtorrent up), which is needed since any program which takes up full upload bandwidth would most likely choke the connection even if it's only using only few connections. you should limit to 80% of upload capacity (200KiB/s for 2MB upload bandwidth) and it should work fine. (unless µtorrent has a problem with the hardware, software or drivers that are installed on that box) ^_^ |

1.5, great. And there is update to the story on Slyck. Quote: Please note there is a correction to this article. It was originally reported that PeerFactor is a subsidiary of RetSpan. The two companies parted ways six months ago. PeerFactor deny ever being involved in anti-P2P operations, despite the reports to the contrary. “We do not distribute any fake file over P2P, but only useful content,” Frenchman Richard Rodrigues, head of PeerFactor told Slyck. “We have never distributed fakes file (unreadable) because no user would […] want to distribute [them]." |

@Metashrine...is it that hard to use built in limiter? I have 512/128 connection and 450 Global max number of connection + 100 connections per torrent...I never, never have any saturation problems with upload capped to 6-8, and download capped to 40. This leaves me with enogh bandwidth to surf comfortably. Not to mention that impact on system simply does not exist unlike majority of other clients. As for Rating any program, You must have some sort of pointer.. for instance If I think that UTorrent(or BitCommet or Azureus...take Your pick) is currently best .torrents client out there it will automatically deserve rating of 5, and have that as a reference(starting) point for rating all other clients. This doesnt mean that uTorrent is perfect app, but it is the best client there is on Windows, and as such deserves 5 stars from me :) |

DudeBoyz: As far as the file size increase, there were FORTY features added just going from version 1.7 to 1.7.7. These aren't bugfixes, they're new features in the code like local peer discovery, support for SSL-encrypted RSS feeds, NAT-PMP support, auto upload throttling, and LOTS of code for proper interaction with Vista (1.6 has problems with Vista). These features I just listed were all added in just the first build of 1.7. Much has been added between that and 1.7.7, as well. And then there's all of the new features of 1.8 (some of which I list below). The bottom line is that significant features have been added that explain the size difference perfectly reasonably. Here's a link to the 1.7.x-series changelog: http://download.utorrent....7.7/utorrent-1.7.7.txt and here's a changelog for the 1.8 alpha/beta series: http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=31998 Pay special attention to the lines beginning with "Feature:". Original post: Really? These other clients are not better than 1.6 but they are better than 1.7-1.8? How? I want you to tell me how, specifically, 1.6 is "better" and why these later version are worse without resorting to unfounded conspiracy theories. I also want specific details of how this project has gone "downhill". Tell me the numbers and how you've benchmarked the different versions. Go ahead. And then you can explain how a 250KB app can be considered "bloated" in friggin' 2008! Sorry if I seem snarky, it's just that every single person I've seen making these claims of 1.6 being faster, to a ONE, has been lying their butts off. 90% of them haven't even TRIED the new versions, yet claim to have "solid results" that their preferred version is faster. So if you have evidence that these new versions are somehow worse, please present it. FYI, nobody anywhere on the internet I'm aware of (and I've looked, believe me) has yet been able to do this. When they're pressed, they just start stammering about the RIAA or something and hope we'll forget their claims of the new versions being "crippled" or whatever. Also, where are you people getting the old versions? You are aware that the source code is not being released for these and you have no idea if the third parties distributing them have modified them OR their installers, aren't you? You'd better hope they're not slapping 0-day exploits into them, 'cause your antivir most likely won't catch something like that. Be careful, and always know exactly who you're getting your executables from. As far as my own experience, I've found the later versions (1.7.X) to be every bit as fast as the older ones were, sometimes more so due to better DHT bootstrapping giving me more peers to attempt connections to. The 1.8 beta is looking very good, and is quite usable. New features include peer exchange and local peer discovery through DHT, which is a great improvement. Also supported in 1.8 is something I've been waiting for from uTorrent since version 1.5: magnet link (URI) support so you don't even have to download any .torrent files! (adapted from the implementation in Azureus) 1.8 has been in development for way too long, but I'm sure it'll be great when it's finally released! |

So basically all of those dumb people below who say it's a spy app or something right now hate THE CREATOR OF BITTORRENT as well? He's the one who bought the program from the original author, what's the big deal about it? Just download less s***ty porn and pirated software and you will have nothing to worry about (which is still not true, uTorrent DOES NOT report or 'scan' anything at all on your PC). dhry, The RSS feature is for direct downloading of torrents from RSS feeds, NOT reading RSS feeds. That's two very different functions. I've had no problems with uTorrent not deleting the torrent files when I've asked it to. I switched from Azureus to uTorrent a few months ago and have never looked back. My computer seems faster when using other demanding applications (since the JRE doesn't need to be running on my system) and is a better fit on lower-powered and older computers. Win 9+ support is something rarely seen! uTorrent's features are just right for what I need. I've never had any major speed problems. The new RSS Reader I've gotten to test a little and it seems to work great! It is too bad that it's not open source, but maybe it will someday when it matures. Love it! |

Are you using 1.4? @BlackSeagull: It does prioritize uploads: settings/seeding priority/[check]"Seeding tasks have hgher priority..." @xyzcb1: This is your setup-you set a down/upload rate too high. Do not set it to the max of your line you have. Try using the built-in speed wizard. |

On build 404, they reworked the networking code for faster speeds, and man, IT WORKED. They made several different changes, but the speed was certainly the most noticable. http://utorrent.com/down....4.1-beta-build-405.txt (also has build 404) I'm very excited about this release; given I'm now into RSS feeds, I'm an even bigger fan given the new features these last two builds have added. |

Great app - but I wish the author would quit concentrating on the useless features and bugfixes (such as this RSS rubbish - let's face it, if I wanted to read RSS I'd use FeedDemon, ok?), and concentrate on fixing a bug that's been there pretty much forever - when you select to delete torrent and data, it deletes the data but it DOESN'T DELETE THE TORRENT! The workaround is stupid - set uTorrent up to delete torrents immediately after loading them. That's fantastic, but what if you want to seed them again later? |

All the claims below are false, there is no new programmer, Ludvig Strigeus is still developing µTorrent, he is NOT on payroll from the RIAA, merely made a millionaire by the Bittorent company buying his project. µTorrent is safe as always and is DRM free, no worries. I mean at the end of the day everything turns into a for profit, spyware, monitoring everything we do, everyone with a ,computer these days are being tracked somehow period, unless you don't use internet, seriously everything i mean every company has these anonymous user statistics for better software improvement and I believe them but they are tracking period, just stop it we need them to track how we use the software and what we download so they can troubleshoot and of course sue us |

Utorrent has been treating me well. I've dropped azureus and started using it, and so far the only thing I miss was how effective superseeding was. This is supposed to be fixed in the future though. Anyone claiming they have bad performance on Utorrent needs to check their settings. The program is setup so it won't hog your CPU, which means if you have a really slow CPU it's not going to run that great unless you change net.low_cpu to false. Also changing disio.write_queue_size to like 3000 or so helps a bit. (no pun intended) |

I've been using Azureus for over a year thinking it was the best of the best. I tried uTorrent for about 3 hours and was SO satisfied with its performance, I've completely switched over, and it's safe to say I'll NEVER use Azureus again. I've been happily using uTorrent now for about 3 weeks. Lovin it to bits. :) I can download 5 2GB torrents simultaneously and it STILL uses around 5 MB of memory. It doesn't bog down my computer at all, and the downloads come in fast and reliably. This IS the best BT client, hands down. |

EarlyMorningHours wrote: "This should be an example to other software developers. Small, fast, to the point, works as advertised." -------------------------------------------------- Exactly... :) I had never used a BitTorrent app before finding this one. They all were pretty large in size, and I didn't see the point in using an app that was so "bulky"... uTorrent is only 107 kbs and doesn't add anything to your registry except an association to Torrent files... and that's optional. I love this app... |

just answering to httpd.confused complains: --The download/upload speed selections in the status bar aren't very granular (they are spread by 10 KB/s). When I'm downloading, the difference between uploading at 30 KB/s and 40 KB/s is huge, and I typically like to use something in between. I also like to change it often. --> you can change this in the advanced options, gui.ulrate/dlrate_menu to whatever is you want to set it --Can't change download/upload speed using the tray icon menu. --> see above --Can't use a custom directory for DHT, resume, and settings data (I don't want it under Documents and Settings). --> copy the files you want from the Documents and Settings folder to the µtorrent folder and you dont need to worry about it again --No way to block certain IP addresses or ranges. --> yes, i can see this, i miss the bitcomet ban IP option, still u can use the ipfilter.dat emule compatible to block certain unwanted connections --No plugin support. ("This feature will not be added, please do not request it.") This is too bad, since it may have been the only hope µTorrent had of being worth a damn. --> plugin support is overrated --Not configurable enough, in too many ways to mention. --> dunno, i've got just what i've always needed from the other clients in µtorrent --Who was it that said µTorrent was "all you need"? Who said that Azureus has "too many settings"? Certainly no one who actually knows how to configure Azureus--which would explain why they also wouldn't know what they were missing when they started using µTorrent. --> ok, then they should change "too many settings" for "too many useless settings" --Oh well, back to using a real BitTorrent client. --> depends on your definition of real, but is ok, everyone cant be happy about it either, like so many of us dont get think about azureus as a real client --I'm constantly seeing people complain about Azureus' CPU and memory usage. I don't find the CPU usage of Azureus a problem at all, but it does use ~78-MB of memory on my system, which is too much for low-end systems to handle. With 2-GB of RAM installed, though, it doesn't bother me at all. --> good, can you help us with 1GB on RAM for everyone? --P.S. Feel free to launch personal attacks just because I don't agree with you. --> its not a personal attack to you, but i think you set a huge attack on the program just because u didnt spend much time trying to get all of the benefits or even reading the FAQ, if u see this is just a 2/3 month project, u would be very proud of all it has to offer instead of some called "real" clients anyway, µtorrent has evolved too much, and i think it will become the best of the clients in no time, if it isnt already BTW sorry i didnt answer all your complain list, i just didnt have anything to say about the other stuff |

1. The Port forwarding configuration and speed settings ARE automatic. uTorrent supports uPnP auto-configuration like most other modern clients. It also has automated speed guides for adjusting connection settings and built-in methods for testing connectivity. I dont' see how it could be easier, and it's CERTAINLY just as easy as any other major client out there, and anyone telling you differently has no idea what they're talking about. 2. The third-party search options are still present in the stable release. They just aren't in the betas. I'm looking at them right now. That would suck if they removed them from the next stable release, though, even if I don't use the search at all myself. 3. Low resource usage may not be important to SOME people, but it is important to many, many others. Nothing anyone can say will alter this fact. One can dismiss it, but one can't credibly claim it's some sort of negative. 4. I have never seen a comprehensive comparison of clients show that the newer versions of uTorrent are slower. In fact, it has more ways to reach out and find peers than some other popular clients, which would make it faster in theory. Make all the claims about the speed tests you like, but you know as well as I that they were highly subjective. Others aren't seeing the same results. I, for example, routinely start a torrent only to have it immediately jump up to 1.5 megaBYTES per second (peak of my bandwidth). That's not slow, and that's not "crap" performance. As with any other piece of software, your mileage may vary. Just don't speak as if your perfunctory speed comparisons and performance evaluations are the end-all-be-all and that it can't possibly be that it just seems slower to YOU, because that's far more likely than not. Deluge is great, and I've said as much with glowing praise in my reviews of it. But it's still relatively unstable for a LOT of people (but not everyone) under Windows, and it's still missing a few features (like super seeding). It's good now, and it's got fantastic potential. But uTorrent is here now. It's stable, it's fast, it's feature-rich, and it's more efficient than any other Windows client. |

I swear to God, this is the last time I'm going to say this to you "OMG, uTorrent watches what you're transferring" idiots: ANYONE CONNECTED TO THE SAME TRACKER AS YOU CAN SEE WHAT YOU'RE DOWNLOADING NO MATTER WHAT CLIENT YOU USE. And even if there isn't anyone connected to the tracker you have to worry about, your ISP can still see what you're doing unless you're encrypted from end to end, which almost no one using Bittorrent is doing because it's really slow and/or requires a paid encryption service. Don't believe me? Do me a favor: go to the "peers" tab on whatever Bittorrent client you're currently using. See that list of IP addresses of people transferring that same file you are? Now think about that REAL hard. We'll wait. Why in the heck would the MPAA or the RIAA or whoever need to make some deal with uTorrent when all they have to do to collect IPs of people downloading certain files is connect to that same tracker? These STUPID conspiracy theories don't even make basic sense. uTorrent is the best Windows Bittorrent client out there, especially for those looking to keep resource usage low for whatever reason. It's tiny, it's fast, and it's more full-featured than any other client besides Azureus. The RSS feature works great for automating your downloads, some of the newer NAT traversal features are a big help to those who aren't savvy enough to configure their own router, and things like magnet link (URI) capability are slowly making the need to actually download the .torrent file first obsolete. The people still spreading the FUD about uTorrent are invariably either warez kiddies who are too ignorant of the internet they love to know any better or are deliberately lying about it because they're pissed that a lot of trackers are banning the old versions of uTorrent that they've hacked so they can leech and not give anything back. |

@Viciously Cold: I'm on a 30/20gbit direct cable connection. I use only public trackers and I don't encrypt the connection. I download 30 to 50 gigabytes a month and seed back appr0x 5-10 times more. I'm doing this using only uTorrent and the best part is, that I don't have to move a finger, uTorrent does it for me automatically via RSS. Oh, I forgot I have fixed IP. :-))) So dude, think about it. Either you're a sad schizophrenic monkey, or simply a troll. If what you're saying were true, a commando would be right outside my door. Better go check it, eh? uTorrent is the best client. |

The last few people have too much time on their hands. I can't be bothered to write that much. Positives: Runs great on windows. Quite stable. Supports legacy windows(9x/ME). Small, portable, fast. Negatives: No plugins, lacks many useful features and options - seeding options somewhat flakey. I'll still give it a 5, cause it's very good compared to most other torrenters, but my favourite is still Azureus. Azureus supports Windows, Linux, Mac, etc., which is way more important to me than supporting Win9x/ME, although it seems to 95% of people out there...it isn't. Win2k all the way! |

I don't normally give out 5's, but this version of Utorrent (from 1.2.x to the final 1.3 build) deserves it. Adding all of what they have added, and recoding the 9x base and still keeping the final 1.3 exe under 120k? That is just amazing. ------------------------------------- That said, I have read the review by QAZWIZ, and while I do not agree with much of what he said, some of his observations are pretty good and I think he's entitled to his opinion. He put some effort into the post, and I certainly do appreciate that. I think the idea of giving it a negative score is rather bizarre, and figure a ranking of 3 would seem fairer based on what he brings up, but still, if he feels good about the score he gives it, I can understand that, even if I disagree. In some ways, I do wish Utorrent was open source as well, but I'm trying not to judge it for what it is NOT and simply viewing it for what it is. This is a lightweight, low-resource app, and I see that it uses much less memory than Azureus. I'm not sure how he gets such superior numbers on his config in terms of memory usage, when many others do not, but he provided numbers that others can compare to at least. I can understand the lack of IP bans (is that the case, that it does lack that ability?). I don't agree on the plug ins. I think Utorrent is supposed to stay light and lean. I don't agree on the Utorrent being banned thing either. I have heard many more sites banning other apps like Shareaza and even Azureus. I don't see why anyone would want to ban Utorrent from participating in torrent distribution, etc. I can understand his frustration about how you can end up being a leech instead of a good contributor, and maybe putting in controls that would limit the download ratio, but there are so many different download to upload ratios for things like Cable and DSL that it might be hard to do fairly. I have 1.5m down, 384k up, so it might look I'm leeching big-time too, but I have no other option. I can only upload at 384k max, and to avoid utter bandwidth saturation, I have my upload limited to 30kB in Utorrent. So, even though I may download at 80kB or maybe over 100kB, I'm only uploading at 30kB. I'm not sure if I should be penalized for that. I'm also not sure that any one program should be judged because of those limitations either. Are there programs out there that provide absolute limits on downloads based on your upload speed? That maybe limit you to a download speed that is the same as your upload speed? There is much to discuss on his post though, so instead of attacking him, I'd hope to see people much more knowledgeable than me on this Utorrent / Torrent thing. ------------------- I'm trying to judge Utorrent on what it tries to be and not what it could / should be. It seems like Utorrent is NOT trying to out-Azureus the Azureus program. It's not trying to be the most feature rich, powerful kid on the block. It is trying to be a very lean, low-resource program that gives users the core functions they need while being simple to use and configure. For what it is and what it does, I think Utorrent is the best around right now. If you want the more feature rich stuff, and don't mind the massive overhead, go for Azureus, which I gave a 3 (would have given it a 3.5 if I could) for the last final release, I believe. But if all you need is a good, basic torrent client, I don't see how you could possibly go wrong with Utorrent. |

I'd been a BitComet user, but as of this release, I've uninstalled it in favor of uTorrent. uTorrent's tiny size may be accounted for by an executable compressor, but there's no way to discount its impressively low CPU and RAM usage. I may never even look at another client. |

Simply one of the best client out there,if not the best. well,qazwiz...such a long review you have written there but most of it are rubbish. What is it about Azureus vs µTorrent? If I were to choose between simplicity or complexity, well, the choice would be so obvious, isn't it? |

All the features I'd ever need in a BitTorrent client: - Chose files in a torrent that I don't want, and prioritize the ones I do. - Prioritize torrent bandwidth usage. - Set limits on upload/download speed globally, global connections, connections per torrent... great for my college network so I don't accidentally hog the internet and get my port shut off. ;) - Downloads first (and last) chunks asap for file preview. - Automatically detects downloaded .torrent files and starts them. - Nice, visually pleasing GUI. - Low CPU usage and small filesize. - Simple "installation". - A bunch of other scheduling and limiting features I'll probably never need but it's nice to have them around anyways in case I do. Only flaw I found is that if you use a file indexer (such as GDS), a torrent may error and stop if GDS is reading a file in it and uTorrent tries to access it, failing, needing to be manually restarted. However this is easily fixed by excluding the download directory in GDS, but an option in uTorrent for automatic retry on a file open error would be welcome. |

A stubborn Azureus user, I finally caved in, the starrt speed, also the download speed and the low memory as compared to Azureus's 140mb convinced me to make uTorrent my deafault client for good, sure Azureus has loads more features but then I asked myself, all I want is downloads and occasional torrent creations, and the point if torrent is to maximize connection, uTorrent does it all with way less resources, wins hands down. The only thing to watch out is that uTorrent ships with default TCP max_connect cound of 8 for compatibility with XP, 2K has no such limits and XP's limit's can be bypassed by patches available on the net, so make sure to set the count higher as per your needs or else suffer slow connections and blame uTorrent. |

I really don't want to start the review with an insult, but qazwiz, are you sure they didn't operate your brains out? Only bad thing about µTorrent is that it is not open source. Other then that, it is perfect BT client. Small memory footprint, user-friendly features, author is *very* responsive to requests/suggestions etc. It is amazing that the author has managed to pack all those features into a single 115KB executable. As for the µTorrent users being torrent thieves... Maybe - just maybe - you could have thought about the fact that µTorrent has simply become one of top three BT clients. I'm willing to bet that the two other clients used by "thieves" are Azureus and BitLord/BitComet - not because they are favourites of the thieves, but because they have most users. And your memory argument is simply silly. Why would anyone want to run client that takes 150MB RAM and lots of CPU, when they can get the same features with a client that takes 6MB RAM and next to none CPU? I'm an ex-Azureus user, when Az was working, it felt like a compiler running on the background. When µTorrent is running, well, there is no difference if it is running or not - I can still do whatever I want, and that includes playing latest games or compiling or... As for the plugins... what are you missing from µTorrent? Play Sudoku or have 3D charts? WTF, it is a BITTORRENT CLIENT, not media player. The less obtrusive, the better. I thought long and hard - and I didn't come up with a single idea that I would need or even want to add, especially as a plugin. And µTorrent being banned from tracker? How conviniently you've forgotten that site... Admit it, you made it just up. Sites that don't have their own client - such as the spyware-ridden TorrentSpy client (yes, I know that they don't run a tracker) - tend to recommend µTorrent. Same goes for your hints about the spyware - you're just trying to create FUD about the thing. Heh, Ludvig would be world's best programmer if he could put great BT client *and* spyware into 115KB .exe. Besides, don't you think that someone would have noticed it by now... As far as I can see, µTorrent is fast becoming de facto standard BitTorrent client. Azureus is losing users all the time, BitComet's userbase is pretty much the same that it was six months ago, others - including mainline - have too small userbase to matter. I wonder, perhaps the author might be willing to make µTorrent open-source when it reaches some kind of stable version. Being a professional programmer, it would be very interesting to peek under its hood. |

I've been using uTorrent for 2 years and it's been rock solid for at least a year with many hundreds of Gigabytes. I can't find any issues with this new version over the last 48 hours with multiple downloads and multiple programs and games. I even tried rebooting, Standby and Hibernation to try to generate an error. The error might not exist in uTorrent but I can't speak for anyone but myself. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I can download and upload with a 425kB/s (my max bandwidth) with 8 different files downloading and only use 1-4% of my CPU and do this for months straight. I've used every version in the last year and never had a single problem. I have made several Settings changes. I use Demonoid.com, Isohunt.com and TorrentHarvester to find files. I have my Torrent open in STOPPED mode, I have my downloads go to my non-Windows drive (avoid Windows and gaming slow-downs). I also recommend having a separate directory in the same partition to move your completed files to (easier to keep track). Note: if you have a LOT of download/upload activity you can still experience reduced activity even if your CPU usage is negligible and you use a non-Windows drive. Why? You are still using the System bus. If you are curious, try running a Futuremark benchmark while downloading to see how many files you can download before the impact on your gaming experience is noticeable. (This is common to all Torrent programs, not just uTorrent) uTorrent works great for me and there's nothing I would change. I mean that. Nothing. |

It will show you everything, not just registry entries, but even your sister ****ing your best friend. http://www.microsoft.com...isk/processmonitor.mspx 3. get a result...and you see? nothing suspicious...not hurting your nice and flashy computer, your secret files, projects, photos of naked Lima you like so much or anything elese in any way. uTorrent has always been my BitTorrent client of choice. It is silly to assume that this program is suddenly compromised, just because the new development team has a business connection to companies trying to promote the legal uses of BitTorrent. Since neither we, nor anyone else, has seen the source code, there is no reason to assume something bad is happening. If you're so suspicious, why don't you do a little packet sniffing and find out the truth for yourself? Until then, how about keeping the conspiracy theories to yourself? |

Saying "most" torrent sites have these newer uTorrent versions banned is either a bald-faced lie or a product of unforgivable ignorance. Every single major public tracker I'm aware of allows these later versions of uTorrent and the majority of these tend to be populated mostly BY the later versions of uTorrent. Then there's private trackers, which can be a bit more murky. However, ALL of the best, largest private trackers (like HDBits) allow the latest versions of uTorrent and, ironically, have actually banned OLDER versions of uTorrent because: 1. The older versions have a major remote crash exploit vulnerability that's been fixed in 1.7.7 2. The older versions (mostly 1.5 and 1.6) have been modified by l33t hax0rz into lame-ass, compromised packages traded around on warez sites with little to no code scrutiny where they are used to send false information to trackers in an effort to cheat and get faster download speed, thus slowing down everyone else in the swarms they're used in. 3. THESE are far, far more suspect than the latest official versions are as far as malware. There is no evidence whatsoever that uTorrent is sending uniquely identifiable data to any organization, especially not the RIAA. The kiddies keep making these claims, but have so far presented absolutely NO evidence supporting their conspiracy theories, and are most likely complaining because they LIKE using their cheater leech software to the detriment of others and are pissy because the modified versions are being banned. Honestly, guys, it's time to put this BS to bed. It's gotten really, really tiresome and you're just embarrassing yourselves. These alpha versions are fairly mature (for alphas) and pretty darned quick. Of course, they better be considering how long 1.8 has been in development. Hopefully not much farther to go to final release! |

The best BitTorrent client around (that I know of). It got 4KiB smaller this build :) One thing I would like though is a build which leaves out the integrated 9x/ME unicode layer, the hidden tetris game, the tab icons and the eater egg sound for clicking on the logo ... That would surely get the size down considerably. I would also like it to be Free Software. But, that aside, excellent client. |

This is an excellent program for the use of .torrent files. It's small (under 200 kB; great for dial-up users) and requires no installation. In addition, it contains as many (if not more) features that BitTorrent has. BitTorrent was registering as a virus in AVG, so I had to switch. This is now my .torrent program of choice. |

For me still the best torrent client. - No speed problem : tested Azureus and µTorrent, and both have the same speed. Azureus just start downloading faster, but I don't care. - Very light : I have 2Go RAM and don't really care about this point. But Azureus is runnin on Java Platform which is really annoying. - Not Open Source : Yes I prefer Open Source cause it's untouchable BUT I'm rating the quality of this software and its security. - Still many kids who rate this software 1 with arguments that don't affect the Software. Pathetic ! (A software is bought so it becomes crap? Funny guys) Note : For guys who have speeds down while browsing, just check the Automatic upload in the µTorrent Settings. |

Undesired Username: All a theoretical RIAA watchdog needs is your IP address and the time. With this information, they can and will get your identification from your ISP unless you're using a series of anonymous proxy servers (which slows transfers down immensely). 99% of people out there don't even know what that is. Even if your IP is dynamic, the lease and the duration are logged by your ISP, and they WILL release it upon subpoena, or perhaps even simple request. I like Vuze. I used Azureus for years and years, and the plugin ability is fantastic. I just came to the conclusion that all of the functionality I need is contained in uTorrent, it's a bit more efficient, and I like the interface a bit better. To conclude on the RIAA thing: the effort required for a dedicated commercial "watchdog" (hired by the RIAA/MPAA/ESA, etc.) to passively and actively (posting fake torrents, etc.) collect the IPs of pirates not using expensive and/or cumbersome obfuscation methods is trivial no matter how you cut it and no matter what Bittorrent client you're using. |
