This is great software (unusual for logitech) which now gives Mx1000 power management options.

Unfortunatly it took quite a bit to install: 1st a complete uninstall of all setpoint software was neccessary - which required a complete uninstall of SpySweeper 5.5.

2nd antivirus software needed to be OFF ie inactive.

3rd after the initial install the program needed to modify itself via the internet - a 40 mb install pared down to a 11.10 mb install specific to the devices on my system.

If this last step does not occure or you do not allow it to occure the software installs as discribed in the previous post.

It gets a 5 because it's full featured (no longer need to install uber-options) and functions stably exactly as I need it to.

If the next update install is as convoluted... Major Downgrade!

Nice Update. Works well on Vista. I can also say that 3.3 never gave me any of the problems other reviewers have mentioned.
Perhaps some of those people who had problems should download this version for themselves and then review it, or perhaps some people would like to stick with DOS.

I haven't had issues in a while. Kind've absurd that mouse drivers take up so much space, (much more than my browser) but I think we've lost that war a long time ago: bloat is standard on windows.

this version works fine on XP too.
and if you have the bug, where firefox not only closes a tab when pressing the left thumb button, but also goes back a page in the next active tab.. this setpoint version fixes that!

this software does what is should, i have a Logitech G5 Laser Mouse and it does improve the accuracy of the mouse, the default windows based is slower then the setpoint one,

as far i know this works 100% correct on x64 windows
am running xp x64 with latest patches now and no problems what so ever, it had some problems before
but if you use the x64 version everything is fine :)
ftp://ftp.logitech.com/pub/techsupport/mouse/setpoint310_x64.exe
there you go thats the x64 version right from logitech's own ftp server :)

With XP Pro and Cordless Desktop® MX™ 3200 Laser (keyboard and mouse) installed I have had no problems with SetPoint 4.72 or any other version I've used. I'm not a big fan of SetPoint because there are so many things that can cause conflicts with it and generally do not have it installed. The keyboard and mouse work fine without it, but I recently found some uses for some of the special settings in SetPoint and reinstalled it and have had no problems with it; everything works great in every program I've used it in. I say if you don't need it don't install it.
The only problem I've had with Logitech is the G7; I was on my second and it crapped out after a year. They sent me a G9 as a replacement and now have to install a seperate version of SetPoint designed only for G9. They say SetPoint 5.10.203 will co-exist with 4.72; we will see.
Although I'm not a big fan of SetPoint I can't really give it less than a 5 because its always worked for me, but that may change soon.

Nice piece of software, although 15 megs seems a bit bloated for what it does (when game detection is disabled).
Also, this claims to be build 610, but it looks like it is the old build, 590.

Works fine on Vista, despite previous reviews. As for trackpads on laptops not working, when did logitech start making trackpads? Anyway DeNovo Edge and MX Revolution here and Setpoint 4.70 works great. I am running Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 and 4.70 is much quicker than previous releases.

I just successfully installed this package on Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server. 460 failed to install. Just being able to know when the batteries are low make it well worth the time involved in installing. I use the EX110 keyboard and mouse. BTW I am running SP2 of 2003 which uses the same kernel that the new Vista SP2 will be using. If I can have all the buttons on my mouse and keyboard working on Server, Vista and XP are a walk in the park. Good work Logitech.

Point Zero

"Too bad the software can't make the lifetime longer.......

These wireless mouses will cost you 100 to 150$ a year.
That means this is the worst in the value for money department.

Value = 0"

Ever heard of rechargeable batteries??? I use cheap rechargeables and and they almost last a month before I put in a new set in my mouse. As for the keyboard I can't remember the last time I changed those. They last at least two months in it. Before you ask I do a lot of typing and clicking!

As for SetPoint? It does the job well. They seem to have corrected a problem I had where it would "forget" the speed settings I wanted.

The software is fine. Piuty the letters rub off the keyboards.

For the dolt complaining about battery life, I suggest further investigation. I did not know they made "gold" batteries, which can be the only explanation for the silly price you quote for a year's supply. My batteries last six months or more for the keyboard and at least as long for the mouse.

Actually, I use a trackball. Which raises an issue with the software. It does not play well with odd combinations of legacy (old) hardware.

I can't find any problems but...

Does Logitech plan to update the size of its Unified Driver package forever?

I won't give a rating above 4 until they do. It's a justifiable complaint, especially if you are just "updating" (Logitech downloads a whole new package based on the new version number, not if your device needs it).

Logitech should download the basic software which links back to Logitech and download ONLY the needed drivers as well as updating ONLY if the drivers for your product change. Is that so hard?

Logitechs not the only one. NVidia does the same thing and every month I checked to see if a newer version was out then I used Acrobat's search tool to search for my video card to see if there were any changes (you can actually cause problems with some drivers). Let's see true "Plug 'n Play" or rather "Plug and Forget"? Is this too much to ask?

(While Linux could do the things I ask, it would be much easier if Microsoft used Package management like Linux distros such as Linux do. I could probably walk away from Ubuntu for 2 years, then turn it on and it would update everything from the Kernal to the applications to the drivers. In the near future, Windows will be simply a second OS for playing games not yet made for Linux.)

Okay, I've had my rant but maybe somebody will listen.

Unless you have a Logitech mouse with battery packs that need monitoring and adjustable DPI settings - like the G7 Laser- you probably do NOT need SetPoint. But with SetPoint you have more control over custom game settings and more, along with low-batt notifications. Works great, may be oversized for its purpose but no performance hit on any decent rig. B+

Should be noted this is for the new generation of mice-- all others still get the 9.79.1.Build 25 Mouseware last updated 2½ years ago...

Edit: yah, EZH... they make one click a million screens/prompts to choose the proper mouse model & operating system, then give everyone the same entire bloat package anyway: all models & all OS starting with DOS included.
And to this day no automatic updater-- except for the background-running Logitech News, which only informs there is an update available.....
You know-- that's not deserving of a perfect score--so down we go.

Am new to the forum, so I don't have any great insight. However I would like to add my 2 cents. I purchased a V400 laser notebook mouse. Love the mouse, but windows would not always detect the receiver, and when the mouse went into hibernation (at irregular intervals), it required 2 to 3 shakes to wake it up. Logitech support said it was the usb port. That was nonsense, but logitech support requires a forum of its own.

I downloaded the 3.01 driver, and voila, the problems mentioned above went away. There is still a lag after the mouse sits, but nothing like it was with the previous release. Looks like the changes were under the hood. Take it easy guys.

A 3 from me.
I only use the logitech driver because it lets me configure every button on my MX 1000.
If MS generic drivers let me do that, this one would be history.
Setpoint is bloated and contains inexplicable ad links. Granted you can disable the ads on install, but they're still simply useless ads that are a watse of resources. Besides, why would a huge company like Logi need to install ads?
Only thing other than configuring all buttons that I'm happy with is that it's nothing like the Harmony Remote drivers where you have to log in to use it and all stages of configuration are web based questions. Eeeeeeewwwww!

Edit:
On a second look, this version didn't have any options for adware, and didn't install any shortcuts for them. It pays to pay attention I guess. My apologies to Logi for that. Still bloated for a mouse driver though.

@djurbino: Yes, at 54MB they seem to have well and truly lost the plot - considering the software is not even half useful as it comes.

For those that wish to make full use of the software, (i.e. fully programmable mouse buttons on a per program basis), then I recommend installing uberOptions, http://rlowens.googlepages.com/ Current beta works well with Setpoint 4.24

Until Logitech get off their collective butts and give me what uberOptions can in less than 10MB, then at best it's very mediocre software considering how much they charge for their mice/keyboards.

i guess its cos they have all keyboards and such in it as well its big but having a built in update feature is pointless if u always have to get the SAME download.. its like nero.. .. if you only use burning rom and none of the other stuff.. to update that.. u still need a 180mb or so download.. but.. ah well.. guess thats what happens when the rich part of the world gets broadband..

im STILL annoyed that theres lots of settings you CANT change.. luckily theres modification tools like uberOptions that can do it for you..

and for heavens sake logitech.. CHANGELOGS PLEASE!..

ph yea.. when I went to logitechs site and searched for a driver for XP i got this one.. even tho its supposedly for vista.. and it runs just fine in XP so.. dunno...

I'll ask right now. What's wrong with a simple windows dialog type driver setup interface?!
There's really no need for all that fancy garbage.

That aside, it does work a little better than the last release I had (3.1.1 I think) which would occasionally forget all of my settings on startup, or simply fail to start.

If not for the sheer size of the download through the incomprehensible need for a skinned interface, I'd give this a bit higher rating.
And hopefully the update actually works this time.
My old software tried to update before I came here and told me there was no update available. Go figure...

Drivers for relatively simple devices should not consume more than 10MB of disk space, period. I don't care what kind of interface they have, it's just bloated beyond a point. However, these do work just fine for my mouse and I haven't had any real complaints. Much better than the old MouseWare drivers, that's for sure.

I echo Qlib-- seems that before SetPoint, a lot more settings in Logitech peripherals were customizable.

As well this software needs a lot more work for laptops with touchpads n Synaptic software.

And i agree with all others re the driver download: dispense of the endless clicking of peripheral and OS versions, as there's mostly only one package regardless of language, OS, peripheral type and model. One has to guess which subcategory one's peripheral falls under... and not all models are listed always as well-- it's a discombobulated & very frustrating process until one wises up. Even worse, the direct support / downloads / drivers link & url keep changing and disappearing from main home page... what's up with that?
It's about time for a company of Logitech's stature to not only improve their website, but to more importantly-- develop an automated driver update AND as well an auto scan for peripheral.

Still buggy with my Logitech Marble Mouse. Auto Scroll and Universal Scroll behave erratically, although the other features behave better. Still slows DocuPrinter down to a crawl while enabled. Oddly, this version works better and is a bit more stable under Windows XP SP3 than it is under Windows Vista SP1... and it's supposed to be FOR Vista! Still needs improvement.

First: 58MB for a mouse driver?! That's insane. Ofg course they can't work out the bugs. I tried using only the driver part without all the bells and whistles and I wasn't satisfied with the stability, too. It's a load of you-know-what and a great pitty, because all of their periferals are simply the best there is be it mice, keyboards or cameras.

I'm just using any Logitech mouse with Windows drivers in Windows, with no problems whatsoever. Nevertheless, the taste is bitter, because i'd really like to change the assignement of some buttons. Can we get a small 200-300KB app for changing the buttons assignements, please? I don't want anything else, and I mean ANYTHING else. Just buttons assignements because this, what you offer us loyal users is a disgrace.

There were always known problems with mice drivers in windows be it Logitech or MS, but it's not getting any better, it's just getting worse.

Fire the whole software department and send them to sell burgers.

I have to agree with the other user below, I too bought the Logitech Marble Mouse (and also the Trackman Wheel) but find SetPoint a total software disaster. I really do like the feel of the Marble Mouse, but the SetPoint software causes ALL SORTS of problems with my applications. For example, it slows down DocuPrinter (a product by Neevia) to the point where it's unusable. Other assorted applications malfunction in various ways. Remove SetPoint, and the problems are gone. Unfortunately, that does away with the programmable buttons on the Marble Mouse too. It's a crying shame Logitech can't release a software driver/interface that works along side other applications. And this version is only for Vista, which has it's own instability issues!

Version 4 in WinXP SP2. After reading all the "disaster" posts on the Logitech forums, I decided I needed to try for myself. But first, because of all the problems others were having after Version 4 bombed, I did a full backup of my HD before testing 4.0.

I am glad I did. I needed it. Install went OK and the mouse worked ... but in the Logitech Setpoint control panel, the buttons could no longer be configured and like so many others, my expensive laser mouse (both cordless and corded) had become a basic $10 mouse with two buttons and no extras.

Logitech should immediately pull these drivers and fix them before re-release. There are just too many folks on their forums with serious problems that are unable to get back to an earlier stable version of Logitech drivers short of reinstalling their operating systems. OUCH!

Do NOT install this software. First, it's buggy. Second, it's not obvious how it can be removed. It doesn't show up in the Control Panel nor is a program group created with an uninstall option. Logitech should be flogged for this.

Update: the software has updated. Reinstalling and agreeing to download an update from Logitech seems to fix it.

I've been using MS mice for the last ten years, and I'm amazed at how a really great mouse as the Logitech MX 400 comes with such a piece of crap as SetPoint.

"Universal scroll" hides middle button clicks from Firefox, "Autoscroll" is plain horrible in certain programs, middle button has to be pressed two times in Firefox to work, no per application assigments, lack of creative functions...

Isn't there an alternative to this garbage?

I was planning of buying an MX Revolution at home, but no thanks.

Edit: fortunately there is an alternative, check out uberOptions (http://www.mstarmetro.net/~rlowens/)
