MarcFou - "Still many pages/sites that wont [sic] render properly." I very rarely encounter one. When I do I realize that because some webcrafters will use MSIE proprietary code, it isn't Opera's fault that they have trouble rendering it when they follow the agreed-upon standards.

Just tested this new 10071 build on my system against both the new FF v3.0 final and the pre-release Minefield (Firefox) alpha v3.1a1 and it beats both of them on both start up times and page loads. I don't know how fast the new Safari 4.0 release will be when it comes out but this new Opera version is easily the fastest browser I have seen so far. The boys over at Opera are really getting their act together very tightly these days it looks like. An impressive browser indeed. When you consider that this is consistantly the most secure browser on the market, year after year after year, it is hard to beat for sure.

Since a few of the reviewers below me seem to think that they can give a "1" without a good reason, I think that warrants a "5" for no reason.

MikeTechno: totally agree with you.

And to all the people saying that FF is better: try measuring the start up time of opera against ff, page load times. Opera is CLEARLY faster. WAY faster.

And for those "it crashes on me" people, well, it doesnt. Used 9.50 since its early alphas/betas, crashed only a few times.

Also, editing bookmarks from the bookmark menu is a nobrainer, im not really sure you know what you are talking about actually....

Remember to configure your FIREWALLS after every release update. I have found opera doesn't like being blocked, it crashes and freezes. I know a few people have complained of this problem, so do a check before posting :p

Firewalls do see (well the good ones) each opera release as a foreign app and will stop it dead.

Opera kicks butt! Been using it for years, even though right now I am trying out IE7. I can say a lot more web sites work with Opera and not with IE7. You can't beat the Magic Wand and my favorite 'Right click, Left Click' and vise versa for the back and foward buttons.
I do wish I could have the Google tool bar for Opera, I need that spell check.

klingon379: you are a dope. There are probably just as many webpages that don't work in FireFox that would work perfectly or better in Opera...like those, um, with Acid2 (since everyone likes to compare web standards in browsers). Opera is more secure than FireFox...keep on dreaming.

John_Bedin: Im not sure how you can backup your claim considering all the leaps that Opera is taking way past FireFox...tab previews, bittorrent, faster load times, better support of future web standards at this point in time, smaller download, smaller memory footprint, better interface, etc.

Metshrine:
-No browser is perfect. If a page doesn't work in Opera, you go tell the devs the problem, and then you go use it in Internet Explorer, or have you forgotten that Windows comes with Internet Explorer? Not a big deal.
-I would figure with everyone worried about security nowadays, getting serious about autoform filler would be the last thing on their minds.
-Im glad you use AdMuncher though and don't rip Opera's content filtering in favor of FireFox AdBlock. AdMuncher trumps every ad filter on the internet, including AdBlock. So if you have AdMuncher, then you don't need Opera content filter or FireFox AdBlock...very very simple.

sophist_dreams: so let me get this straight. If a webpage doesn't work in FireFox you use IETab extension to use IE to render the page and go your merry way. But if a webpage fails in Opera you 1) won't use Internet Explorer to use it and instead say how much better FireFox supports the page and 2) complain and moan that it doesnt work and say how bad Opera is? Boy you are a real hypocrite.

ServerMechanic: As stated, AdMuncher trumps both Opera content filter and FireFox AdBlock. Go get that and quit complaining.

For all of you writing negative reviews because sites don't work in Opera:
You guys are just too lazy to check out the help menu...let alone the Opera forums. The Opera dev team encourages that you submit sites that don't work such that they can improve their product. Seeing as how your only purpose in life is to just rip something based on first judgements, I doubt you will ever use this feature and the sites you visit on a daily basis will never get fixed. Kudos to you!
However, if you are smart enough to submit the site problems, then the Opera dev team would look into it and fix any possible problems when the final version (or next beta version) comes around. Then in future reviews you wouldn't have these complaints and you would save everyone the time from reading your stupid complaints that your sites don't work in Opera.
But then again, if they were to fix these problems, you would probably make it your point to find new sites which don't work and complain about those too...bah!

Anyway...
They have added so much, especially the NEEDED CTRL-ENTER shortcut for www.-.com completion.
I figured AOL Explorer would be the only browser with tab previews...I guess I was wrong.
They have added so much its ridiculous...I trully believe in this project because of how active and dedicated the development team is...now if only the IE team was this active.

5/5. This is the best browser on earth (this coming from a computer user who has been using Internet Explorer for the past 7 years up until 2 weeks ago when I changed over to Opera 8.51, then Opera 9TP1).

Opera is a truly excellent web browsing platform. However, I will not use it myself because it's not Open Source. I may recommend it to others, who would not spend 20 minutes tracing through a crashed firefox.exe. Yes, it DOES happen more often that I'd like. Also, Opera has better memory usage. I can't speak for security.

Otherwise, Opera v9tp2 is the fastest and most standards compliant Windows browser of them all.

Best browser around! Much faster than Firefox, much functionality integrated (email, im, bittorrent (tp2); you name it) and a smaller download.

New functionality in Technical Preview 2: Widgets, Bittorrent, easy content blocking, easy adding of new search engines, improved pop-up blocking and thumbnail preview for the tabs.

This version rocks for me..it unbreaks some sites that were broken in 9.0tp1, it has absolutely the best and most elegant AdBlock/popupblock/Flashblock implementation on market.

It has per site customization!!!

It's super fast and it has all features I need from webrowser...

It has AJAX based widgets, so in near future ppl that uses widgets on Windows platform can kiss goodbye both Yahoo's and Stardock's memory intensive widget solutions

FF and IE are sunked even deeper with this release.

Yay! Ctrl+Enter finally auto completes "www" and "com" when used in the address field.

The widgets seem to be faster (less resource hogging?) than yahoo widgets, etc. But, no betanews widget yet :(

Now if they only had filterset.g adblock built in I would forgive the lack of extensions because of the speed.

It breaks 2 websites I visit frequently, of which have been reported for faulty rendering multiple times.

Aside from that, this release still goes to show this is the best 3rd party browser available.

More sites work natively on this than on Firefox, I have discovered in my studies. It's more stable, it's moe secure, and is much more integratable into multiple operating systems.

Out-freakin'n'friggin'-standing!! FFFFaassssttttt! On steroids! Too bad some FFanboy mistook this area for a restroom. Always some party pooper not too far away, ready to dump.

Now needs a coupla things: better compatibility with streaming AOL Media Playback(unagi plugin: test on Channels @ AOL, that won't work, though the new aol video player and site works fine)-- and ability to scrunch toolbars 'n their space area like w/ IE engine.

If you want 100% stability, try Opera v8.51, otherwise give Opera 9 Tech Preview 2 a shot. You wond't be disappointed.

I love all these small things that make the browser so convenient, like WAP pages surfing (try e.g. http://wap.yahoo.com ) and that Opera shows the miniatures of sites if you hover your mouse over the tab. You can try it with your browser ;-)

... and a word concerning security. Opera is not only favourite but also the only browser of Bruce Schneier ("Personally, I use Opera. I like the fact that it seems to be designed with the best interests of the user in mind, and not the best interests of large corporate websites"). Good recommendation?

@Bixente: Do You a little fool? The TP2 was released 7-2-06 and You test it 7-2-06 for 3 days? This is not stable release, not beta but technical preview only. Only real idiot install it without backup over the stable one - when You missing Your bookmarks look for the Opera folder for so named .BAK file. I think there is no better browser and there is no reason to give 5 (if I can not give 6)!

this build is not as good as the previous one (build 8432)

for example, take a look at the following page:

It appears all empty in Opera 9.0 build 8460...

But I'll still rate it a 5, because opera rules, and always will (btw does anybody have a release date for Opera 9.0???)

The rendering faults are not with web-developers and the code; the problem is with the rendering engine itself Why should web developers have to develop a browser recognition for Opera itself when the fault is when Opera cannot meet code standards as well as Firefox?

Ok then, I was wrong about the standards;Opera has always been ahead in CSS standards, but if Opera can't have adaptive rendering as such like Firefox or IE, it's Opera's fault for not perfecting the engine. Since the last release rendering has vastly improved. Other faults are exaggerated caching Opera has implemented which can cause issues which is commonly referred to as rendering issues, but is a caching issue that can simply be resolved by auto-refreshing java scripts.

This delivers great quality browsing, skinning, widgets, fast rendering, security; and all using far less memory than the gecko engine browsers!

They can run Opera on a DS, Minimo Mozilla comes nowhere close.

P.S. zridling, you're wrong; IE will remain the most used because it's what's included with Windows; most people don't know of anything else or are just too lazy to install an alternative, or are corporations with I.T. management on Microsoft payroll.

My school forces Internet Explorer, I use Opera and Firefox. You say IE doesn't have any "unfriendly code"? How about the numerous crashes and buffer overflows on IE6? I've experienced none with Opera, your claim is false.

Most of the sites I visit with Opera are either perfect or better than Firefox, but the source of the artist's frustration lies in Opera's adherence to standards. They're already supporting CSS3 when no one else is even thinking about it. The reason IE6/7 will remain king of all browsers is because it is so forgiving of bad code. So you could say that Opera is simply ahead of its time for now.

Still the best, and this version appears to have squashed the few remaining mystery crashes I had been having now and then. For the Flash problem: I don't know why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't when you install a new version but if it doesn't work, download the Netscape plugin here: http://sdc.shockwave.com...ave/download/alternates/

Run the executable and restart the browser. If it doesn't work (and it may not), you have two separate plugin folders in your Opera program folder (Don't know why they haven't changed this?). Copy all files in each folder to the other one. When you restart the browser all plugins should work. That's my only complaint about Opera these days: some things that should "just work" need a little fiddling. Not much, but if you're a normal Joe who just turns on the machine and expects everything to work and don't know how to move things around in a program folder or edit a text file, this is a MAJOR obstacle to replacing IE.

When they finally make this thing perfectly "plug and play,", and unfortunately for the masses nothing less will do, it should replace that stupid blue "e" on the desktop that 80% of the world thinks IS the internet.

When the computer crashes, the browser can pick up where it left off. The transfer/download window is practical and functional with clickable resume. If there is something you don't like the opera forums can help you find how to remove it. Opera knows speed is not just about optimised code but say the number of clicks to reply to email or report spam. Screen reader compatible, zooming, keyboard features for almost everything, make it perfect for the physically impared, and Opera promotes this. Opera cares.

Simply the best browser. Firefox is its nearest competitor (I give Firefox a 3/5 rating) and IE obviously sucks(1/5-Just 1 for, it's engine is used to make decent browsers as Avant Browser). Some people are arguing just because it is not freeware. When the quality of the product is so high you have to pay a price for it. BTW, Opera offers students/educational discounts. Keep the good work guys....Opera is a browser that will survive for a long long time.

niti, I strongly disagree with your comments. Concerning ram usage, I have no additional extensions installed with Firefox yet I find it uses slightly more ram than Opera does on start-up. Further more, when I did a simple test with tabbed browsing (I used Opera and Firefox to open the same 4 pages in different tabs), Firefox used around 10MB more than Opera did to do the same thing. Firefox is a good browser, but I don't personally feel it's ahead of the game.

To review Opera itself, I think it's an excellent browser and it's always getting better. I still find some small rendering issues from time to time, but overall it works very well and is relatively light on system resources, particularly when using its tabbed browsing feature.

Very good browser! The fact that u can use the program for free and full with just little ads and not just for a time period make's it a very usefull program. It displays frendly ads no spyware or malware just like FlashGet who is another good program. Who don't like the ads coud buy the program!

Opera is simply my favorite browser, and Beta 2 has finally made 8.xx usable for me (the progress bar issue was just too much for me, so I have been sticking with 7.6tp4). I prefer it over Firefox because it seems less 'clunky' than FF on Windows, and it just seems more oriented towards Windows in general (Firefox is a great browser for Linux, and Opera's Linux build is sluggish, so don't misunderstand me).

Speed is the main reason I use Opera. It has always been advertised as the fastest browser on the web, and I'd have to agree. The way it manages its cache is simply too good; after using it (bear in mind that I have dial-up), I simply could not bring myself to use a browser which reloaded pages I'd already visited if they hadn't been updated. I love it.

My favorite browser, fastest, best tabs management. In fact, it was the first browser to EVER have tabbed browsing anyway.(Opera corporation came up with the idea)

This program has no real adware, AT ALL. All there is is a small advertising window ran by the Opera Corporation themselves, so If you find any adware of any kind from this browser, then go ahead and sue them, or me, if you sue me, I'll call you a dumba** because I'd know your full-of-$hite.

Anyway, best browser ever, doesnt have the compatibility problems that Firefox does, the tabbed browsing is easier than anything else, and no security issues what-so-ever.
If you dont like the ads, then buy the program, its worth every penny.

I'd give this 10 stars if that were possible.

Still find Opera excellent with it's real tab support. Just can't get use to FF with the TabBrowser extension, with it's occasional tab session corruption error, and the way it mimics full tabbed browsing (opening up a new page before placing it in tab). Don't see what's wrong with Opera's adware. The same as if you were using google normally.

Opera's free version does contain ads, but the company has a strict policy of not monitoring your surfing habits, and it does not gather information about you or your system. Opera may lag due to the fact that they dare to charge for their software, but it doesn't take away from the fact that this is a great, VERY user friendly browser. It pioneered many of the cool features that Firefox has now adopted and IE eventually will. Keep it up Opera.

there are a lott of problems with the ALPHA 2:

- downloaded files have no extension
- emails are visible as "read" but there are "not read" (not every email)
- the email client is VERY slow by showing the numbers after the folders --> Received (12)
- sometimes if i tipe something in my Google field (right side of adressbar) opera opens a other page but not the google search
- sometimes opera is "frozen" for seconds
- a lott of usernames/passwords are not saved in WAND
etc.

but i love the browser, really the best out there!!
and for the guys saying: "comeon, its buggy as hell..." HEY, IT ALPHA!!!! what do you expect! there are a lott of dumb people out there...

Using this build is smooth as silk. All the issues I noticed last build - Wand not working, downloads not saving file extensions, bookmarks not sorted in name order, etc - have been fixed, and I personally haven't yet come across a site that doesn't render properly.

It's an Alpha build that - for me - runs better than any final build of any other browser.

As for the crashing reported by m0user: I've never ever seen Opera crash on XP: perhaps using Vista is your problem...(also, please try not to review an ALPHA build product - this is actually a Weekly snapshot release - and then complain about bugs. Kindly come back when they release the final build.)

And horsecharles, where do I even start? By your logic, NO browser has ever had a final release, since all browsers are continually being updated for security, bugfixes and additional features. See that huge download button for v9.23 on Opera's main page? That's right, A FINAL BUILD.

Cretin.

Best browser on earth.
It is hard to improve even more what was already GREAT. Well, Opera team made it (again). This last build has some quirks, but hey, it is an alpha! You know you may encounter problems and we should report them to authors, that is the way development works (Except for Microsoft, which release garbage and take hundred of dollars for you to test their buggy bloated crap).

I think that some frustrates write here.

Opera = eternal beta/alpha? Well, Opera v.9.23 stable was released on the 15th of August 2007, which means that around a month ago! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opera_browser

The more popular items the better they are? Well, Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini do not share this point of view. I also think that Britney Spears is not better than Holst or Britten. I also think that "Mein Kampf" and "The short history of All Russian Bolshevik Party" is one of the best books because by far more popular than most "so called masterpieces". But definately the best book written in the 20th century was "Quotations from Chairman Mao Zedong" http://en.wikipedia.org/...rom_Chairman_Mao_Zedong

Opera keeps improving. This is a bleeding edge ALPHA version. If you don't know what that means, DON'T use it.

The shared best (with Firefox) browser getting better.

BTW, it's NOT in constant beta. There are new final releases more often than for FF/IE and they work!

If you do not understand what ALPHA/BETA release means, use the OFFICIAL latest FINAL release.

http://www.fanboy.co.nz/adblock/

Works as good as Adblock extension for FF, lets not forget, this is Alpha, not stable and therefore prone to bugs, for stability use 9.23, as for site compatibility, been using Opera since version 2x and till now, I have rarely come across sites not working with Opera, its the fastest and most secure browser and I won't want them to change in anyways, for those who don't like it, there are many other alternate browsers out there, suggest they stick with those.

What a rampant ignorant.

Bobad you must be joking right? Opera no more secure than IE7 you say!

According to Secunia, the highly respected security monitoring site, this is the up to date state of play with the two browsers:

IE7: Has 10 advisories, the most serious being highly critical, with all patches installed.

Opera: Has NO advisories(as usual).

There is no comparison between IE7 and Opera.

TOP 5 reasons why "bobad" gave this a 1 rating.

He:

1) has to spoil it for everyone.

2) can't count to 2 yet.

3) has ..1! compulsive bahaviour ..1, 1. disorder 1, 1, 1.!

4) came up with the result after an in-depth, exhaustive 3 month cross browser compatability analysis.

5) got confused and thought 1 is best rating

I have to say, I really like this browser. Best Featue: when you copy text from a web page and past it into your e-mail client, this version of Opera knows to strip out all of the embedded web/HTML instructions and code so when you past, all you get is the text that you were looking to copy and none of the other garbage - by default! Nothing to switch on, no menues to search through. You just have to love that. EVERY other browser needs to copy that one incredible feature. That one, criticially important and highly valuable feature alone vaults this release of Opera to the top of my personal browser rankings above both Avant 11.6 and Maxthon 2.0.x

Another excellent build!

@ dzjepp: I'm not the author of these tests. But, read this:

«Windows browsers

The tests are done on Windows XP SP2. Internet Eplorer 6 is a standard install, Internet Explorer 5 is the zip package install that can be downloaded from QuirksMode.org. (IE 5.5 crashed every time I tried to run it.) The Windows performance settings are set to the automatic setting (default). Opera 8 tests were done using Opera 8 beta 1. Mozilla 1.8 tests were done using Mozilla 1.8 alpha 6. Firefox 1.5 tests were done using Firefox 1.5 beta 2. Opera 9 tests were done using Opera 9 technical preview 1. I also tested the Moox Firefox install, "optimised" for my particular processer. I tested the new Netscape, which is basically Firefox with some added rubbish that slows it down. K-Meleon is the only other Gecko browser I tested, as is said to be the fastest one (although in fact it is slower than Mozilla and Firefox at all tasks except starting).

I also tested a few browsers that are not current browsers (Netscape 4, Escape 4, Clue, Internet Explorer 5.0, Mozilla 1.0, Opera 6.03). This is done purely for the sake of interest (and it is interesting to note that IE 5.0 is significantly faster than IE 6.0).

Hardware; 800 MHz Intel Pentium 3, 256 MB RAM.»

This is not due to any technical specs, speed or any other gimmick, it is Opera's philosophy.

this seems to be a particular good build.

i am using firefox 3 since some monnths.

[with tree stye tabs (vertical tabs), stylish, stumbleupon, stop autoplay, scribe fire (blog editor), personal menu, organzie search engines, firegestures (allows opening of multiple links with a mouse stroke), autocontext, cs lite (perfect cookie controll), and some less important extentions]

in firefox i miss operas popupblocker so much. and the wand. and the posibility to open windows in the background when they are trigered by a form's enter button (via pressing s***+mouseclick)

i would still use opera, actually i do sometimes, and i would not even mind using two browsers for ever, if they could just use the same bookmarks (at the same time).

speaking of bookmarks: opera's inability for right click context and drag and drop in the bookmark menus is the most important reason to make firefox my "first" browser. (the one which gets my up to date and complete bookmark collection)

so i hope that one day the GUI toolkit gets more powerfull. as far as I know it is third party and Linux related or something (KDE?motiv?). opera can't change it, and linux stuff (open group effort stuff) is allways frigging conservative (sloooow) in evolution.

love to opera

I have tried to turn many people on to Opera. The ones that understood the advanced features now use it as default. There will always be those that cannot understand how to use a browser if it does not look like IE or have some glitzy interface. They are generally the same people that never knew there was POP 3 mail.
With various buttons and other things written by the community there is no end to customizing Opera for your own use.
Opera was the first software I actually paid for and I have watched and enjoyed the developement.

Fast, good scalable, userfriendly and good customizable

+ The only browser which is capable of loading images with right menu and scale them with [ctr+mousewheel] like I want.

+ Saving complete surf sessions and start back there when you want.

+ You can choose a plenty of very cool and helpful widgets.

+ You can make use of the speed dial. I don't want to miss this because I used to have it. Very helpful feature. I put 9 homepages there where I am daily.

+ Build in feedreader, mail-client, chat-client, bittorrent-client and more

I don't need IE or FF. I am using Opera for many years and there is no browser that fits better to my needs.

Dude I really think you should look into the browser a little more. Sure things don't come in the form of plugins but you can do alot more than you think with the interface.

Have a look at how my Opera looks, it's very clean and simple. http://customize.org/screenshots/60093 Custom buttons are the trick and you can get them here http://operawiki.info/CustomButtons. This is a far more robust browser than people think. You can use the status bar to put any buttons and bars you want to have the tabs bar be under it like in FF if you want. There really are alot of options people don't realise. An option I really love is that you can create custom searches with a simple right click in a search box on a site and it will be added just like that.

As for this release, Opera is really starting to get back on track but I still have some minor issues that my bug reports don't seem to get fixed. Seems to keep getting faster with each release

He's right. There is way more visual customization than you think and the functionality has been there for quite a long time. Perhaps why Opera doesn't tout it as it should be. All kinds of nice widget drag-and-drop action and plenty of attractive skins. You can get it to look just how you like.

Its destined to be the best,.

Thanks to the Developers for the most customizable browser that comes with the ability to do most all your web-work in 1 package.

McAleck: Dude, I'd suggest you relax and keep it mind that this is a BETA/ALPHA-type release. If you want stability, use latest stable version, which is 9.27 if I remember it right.

Opera > *

FF is great, but O tops it in every respect, except for plugins.

The new Digg commenting system doesn't seem to crash this build which is good as it does previous builds and 9.27. Also Yahoo! mail drag and drop seem to work, but causes text selection when performing the drag. One thing i've noticed that does seem to be different is that now Opera logs you into a site before you've selected whether or not to save the password. This speeds things up i suppose but i'm undecided as to whether this is necessarily a good thing.
@mharvey. Good point dude. I'm sold!

three words:
paste and go.

in the context menu, of the adress bard and the search bar, in addition to the normal cut, copy, and paste functions, it adds the function "paste and go," or the equivalent of hitting enter after you paste something. so simple, you'd think we'd have realized it by now.

I had been a FireFox user mainly to avoid all the spyware and exploits with I.E.. What I didn't like about FireFox was it's slow load time, and RAM usage. Otherwise I thought it was great.

I tried Opera because I read it was fast loading, fast surfing, and wasn't targeted by spyware writers as I.E.. All of this proved to be true, and I am now a convert.

I hate the default setup of the toolbars, so I customized it using the MyVista toolbar setup and a different color/button scheme. I think because of all the differant setups possible, it confuses the novice user, which is Opera's downside. We all know that it's also one of Opera's strength. But because it doesn't setup like I.E., it feels foreign to beginners. If this is you, stick with it. Go to the "Community" pages and see what you can do.

Opera is a safe, stable, and fast browser that you'll be very happy to have as your default browser.

Taking into account that there are almost no web pages "optimized" for Opera, it would be good to implement a better "chamaleonic" pattern to assume as own pages created for any other. For first users the initial page should be more simple (only one row of buttons), and include as buttons history, links and downloads. There should be a better solution for downloads, to avoid stopping them by simply closing the program. In spite of all this I give it a 5 because none of the existing alternatives is perfect.

I have used opera since version 6, I think I know what I am talking about just because I dont write an essay on it. This is for stating your opinion about the product and if you think its getting better I dont see the problem in writing so. That bein said, I doubt how much YOU actually have used Opera, since it takes about 5 seconds to disable the .torrent feature.
what is bothering me atm is that for some reason www.continental.com is not working with Opera at all.... I wrote them (continental) and asked what the heck, it was working fine before, but they have not gotten back to me yet... oh well. I think opera is a great browser, nothing fancy but with lots of useful features, and also the fact that it has so little marked share makes me feel better about the security also because who wants to make adware for a 1% marked share browser...?

Opera always the speediest browser ever, the JavaScript speed is only noticeable if you have a -400mHz or an old PC, now with all modern PC have +1000Mhz and Double Core CPU the JavaScript speed is irrelevant. In the real world Opera feel and IS more fast that others browsers like FF.

@bittermann

"There you have it...Betanew's own browser tests show that Opera is getting slower and buggier."

Huh? It shows no such thing. It says nothing about "bugs" (although it is a beta), and it actually shows a slight performance improvement if you look at the numbers. And that is despite the fact that 10.10 was never supposed to be focused on performance in the first place.

Lastly, BetaNews's test is completely useless and filled with garbage like the irrelevant artificial JS benchmarks that are specifically optimized for Safari or Chrome.

Would never think it was an alpha! Very, very fast and accurate.
Had a problem loading the last few versions and found I was not alone. Could not completely uninstall and start over as Opera would not show on any uninstaller. It is necessary to go to the two or three Opera references in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software|Classes and delete them. Restart and then install fresh copy of Opera.

I've been singing Opera's praises for a while but honestly, NOW it really is deserving. The great things about it still are great but the page rendering of sites has greatly improved(still some won't but they won't even in firefox now too so...) and the addition of a spell checker was looooooong over due.

The stability of these alpha's are impressive. This release addressed 2 issues I had with the last alpha so they are definitely taking this browser to the next level.

Don't like the lack of customizability. It allows you to do *some* things, but my tastes of where things go are different than most people's. Last I checked it couldn't turn a panel into a toolbar, but I haven't tried 8.52 explicitely, so it could have changed since I installed it.

Stable.

Opera has been my default browser for about two years. Started using it as a secondary a long time ago, it is one of the first softwares I actually paid for.
It has really grown since 7....that is when I really noticed exactly how much better it had become.
I have set it up for many people and become irritated when people find it takes a few brains to use it and they stick with IE.
It's a great browser and I find new things about its customization all the time.

Hawkeye, with all due respect: removing IE from W98 and swapping in the W95 Explorer (with 98 Lite) makes a HUGE difference in memory useage, available RAM for non-OS apps, and overall system responsiveness. The more things you add to the mix, the more things the OS has to juggle and cache. Removing IE and swapping-in W95's Explorer makes a huge difference.

You said:

1) IE doesn't take that much memory. Well, this is a subjective opinion. How do you define "too much"? Probably pretty much the exact opposite of how I'd define it.

2) Removing IE cripples the OS? Pffft, those that don't understand how 98 Lite works, don't believe this for a second. IMO (and that of countless thousands (millions?) of others), removing IE from Windows LIBERATES it. Do you really think all these people using 98 Lite would continue to do so if it "crippled" their OS? This is just pure FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt.)

Oh btw, Opera rocks as usual.

New beta is great, stability fixes and a new mechanism to invoke inline-find (close to mozilla's find-as-you-type). In case people missed it, beta 11 introduced a radical departure for advertising in software. Opera now uses google text ads relevent to the visited page (no graphics), plus a related searches bar - so the ad's are actually useful for a change. Strict privacy policy guarantees your surfing anonimity (been packet-sniffed by independant parities to confirm this too).

I have used Opera for many years, having paid for the first 3 releases--I would still pay for it.
Opera is fast and resource friendly. You can open tabs within one copy of the program running--I have had 20 tabs open at once. You can use as much ram as you choose for cache, lessening the need to read cache from HD. One of my favorite features is the Wand, which is a built-in password feature. I have never needed an external password program because Opera Wand remembers. It has provision for multiple personalities--e.g. I have 4 different Yahoo accounts, and Wand allows me to select which account I want to login, then provides the correct password.
I recommend Opera for all browsing--the only time I use IE is to download Windows patches and updates.

bggoth: That link didn't help. I already have an account and all it did was just point me to the logiin page anyhow.

Everything else seems to be ok.

phiber0ptik: If you going to say it sucks at least give a reason why. The people trying Opera here already now how it behaves and how good/bad it is. You're not going to sway anyone by just saying it sucks...

Opera is by far my favorite browser, but two things they could do to make the transition easier for anyone looking to convert: (1) make fonts easier and simpler, and (2) change that wacky IE7-like tab behavior. It should not be hard just to ask that all — all — tabs open in the background without pressing extra keys or hitting the middle mouse button. If for no other reason you'll want Opera — customizable keyboard shortcuts!

Ok, the last two reviewers are idiots, if alpha/beta quality releases arent cutting it for you, logic dictates that you should go back to the last stable and wait for the next one. I'll agree the stability and quality of these releases has been iffy at best, some better than others, but still, it is alpha quality, so you really can't complain. However, I see a lot of progress in these releases and a final product will come to be soon enough, the Kestrel Rendering engine is fast...

Support is always available. Opera works when all of microsoft's browser has been completely removed with IEradicator, 98lite, or XPlite. In the Opera developers corner I see microsoft MSN had been stopping people using the Opera browser by sending users to an MSN page that didn't work basically, how anticompeditive. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

I love Opera. I really do. I've been using it since about version 3-4. But for christ sakes why can't they give the thing a decent skin? The 7-9.27 series had a default skin that thoroughly sucked. Now this one is a distinct improvement but it still sucks. Just slightly less so. It's about time the graphics department pulled out their finger and gave first time users' first impression the first class treatment it deserves! And another thing is if they don't get this damn thing out of BETA/RC pretty soon Opera will become irrelevant if its not careful, especially with a resurgent FFX3. As a developer i can understand that we like things to be "perfect" but for the sake of Opera users and Opera the company they really should get this thing released now!

Opera doesn't have tab groups but it does have sessions. You can save the state of all open tabs as a session and then open an entire session in one go or have a specific session load up when you start Opera.

Or, alternatively you can just create folders in your bookmarks list and open up its entire contents in one go.

You can also tell Opera to start up where you left off with all open tabs which I think is great.

I don't agree with you that Opera lacks functionality, quite the opposite.

Attention: This build is experimental.

It contains a feature reporting system that will report back usage of a number of features to Opera once per week.

Yes, you can turn the feature off:
opera:config#UserPrefs|EnableUsageReport

So, what does the report contain?

You can check yourself, a copy of the next report is stored in the Opera profile directory, under usagereport/report.xml. It reports things like what preferences you have enabled or not, whether you use Widgets or not, and how many bookmarks you have. Only numbers*, no domain names or other sensitive data.

*) Excluding Visa and MasterCard

Changelog:

* Included experimental feature reporting mechanism
* Java works again
* Some stability fixes

I had a few stability issues in the early days of the 7.20 betas (expected) but non whatsoever recently. I don't care much for the email client & believe that Opera should consider offering a browser only version of erm...Opera. That aside, it's the best thing since sliced bread. If you don?t like it consider actually installing the product.

@Alexander-GG >> Why should you care? If your wrench does not fit the bolt because the bolt manufacturer chose to deviate from the standard... Is that the wrench manufacturer's fault? Who would you complain to?

Both Opera and Firefox are excellent browsers. I use Opera because I love the speed, the customizability, the keyboard shortcuts, the mouse gestures - all directly out-of-the-box.

i sorta kinda see what al's saying. most of us don't care what's under the hood, we just want web pages to render correctly. but i also see what opera is saying, conform to standards, and everyone's browsing experience will be lighter, faster, and most of all, the browser should be invisible, rather than a hassle. opera is light on the computer resources, works out of the box, and does everything i need it to do. great browser.

Blaxima Jul 2, 2008 9.51

Well I can't see what Alexander is saying because DevArt loads for me without any troubles and it did so with 9.50 too. I certainly can't see or believe that FF is the same or faster because that has never been my experience and the difference in speed now is even greater. There are some sites that cause hiccups though but I don't come across them like I used too.

With that said 9.50 was a great step forward but wasn't ready to be released. It gave better speeds while having so many built in features and still lighter than the others while being the safest BUT it also introduced some new flaws that definately impacted the browsing experience. 9.51 has corrected all of my concerns thus far. Good job by the Opera team jumping to fix it as quick as they did.

FOR THOSE WHO DON'T WANT THE TRAY ICON
To remove the tray icon, you need to edit the shortcut used to start Opera, at the end of the command add /notrayicon

Alexander-GG: Just so you know, Opera gets one of the highest scores on the ACID test. So it's devianrt's fault that they pages don't load correctly, not Opera's.

I like the new interface of Opera, so, today I installed Opera (9.51) again. The pages at deviantArt now are displayed correctly. When I was opening the DA pages (with Opera 9.50, cause I don’t like to test betas) the page-add at the header (top) was placed right in the centre of the page and I was unable to see the content. You may see the same “effect” if you open now the homepage of the Orbit downloader. There are some more websites where you can see the same problem.

So, now 5 for good interface and speed.

Opera Unite and Opera browser are not two separate browsers; Opera unite is a component of the Opera browser that acts as a web server for collaboration with other Unite users.

The [official] build of 10.0 Beta 2 (build 1642) does not include Unite, the other [Beta 2+, build 1643], as a development snapshot, does. This is because the developers do not feel Unite is ready for an official beta release.

The UNITE is still the same as launched, with improvements on the proxies from Opera's servers so it runs better.
Hope you enjoy this GREAT peace of software.

2 betas in almost one day? NO.

The point is that Opera realizes two browsers - Opera Browser, which you can find here http://www.opera.com/browser/next/ and Opera Unite, which you can find here http://unite.opera.com/ .

The build 1642 Beta, which was realized yesterday was usual Opera Browser. But the build 1643 which was realized today is Opera Unite. They have even differently named installers, not just the different build numbers.

The point is that Beta News mixed this two, in idea different browsers in one article. So, it's not an Opera teams fault and there are no two betas in almost one day. Beta News should make two articles - Opera Browser and Opera Unite.

I use Ope Unite and rate it 5.

First off - remember these previews are PRE-BETA; they are intended to test out more radical changes to a small set of testers.

Having said that preview 3 is really great. The interface is tighter than ever, though I imagine more changes are instore before a public beta. A new customisable start toolbar drops down from the address field with things like your history, top 10 sites etc. Previously closed pages and blocked pop-ups are put into a trash can on the page (tab) bar - a neat touch. Everything is much more slimline and minimalist.

The Extensible Rendering Architecture (medium screen rendering), though still with some bugs, is shaping up nicely. The idea is that you'll never have to scroll badly designed web pages, they will be dynamically reflowed to fit your screen resolution!

Sadly, voice control doesn't work on my soundcard, but several users are developing powerful stylesheets to allow Opera to function as a screen reader.

Good stuff overall...

Well, gee, let's see: Firefox has been plastered all over the news lately, and is free. Think that has something to do with its popularity? If not, just look on this site at how skewed reviews are, in general, based simply on freeware/payware status. The trend is as obvious as brightness while staring at the sun. (Note: None of this discourse is meant to convey that I dislike Firefox.)

Opera 7.60 Preview 1 was very unstable for me. Preview 2 ran very well, and so far, so is Preview 3. I've been using Opera 7.x for several months now, and almost *never* have to resort to Insecure Explorer.

I'd really love to see a list of web sites that Opera supposedly displays incorrectly, according to some of these reviewers. I have no such problems, and I do a *lot* of surfing. Let me guess--they're all under microsoft.com and msn.com?

I find it hilarious that people indignantly say that they refuse to use Opera because of its ONE ad banner. Think about it: The entire internet is littered with banner ads of all sorts, including this very site. And what is Opera? A web browser that graciously displays those ads for you. What's this you say, you use an ad blocker? Well, a good ad blocker will get rid of Opera's built-in ad, too. This is simply too funny!

I don't think the cluttered interface criticism is valid at all. Ths interface is extremely configurable and there are hundreds of skins to choose from. If you don't like the way it looks, change it!

Opera has become like a favorite blanket for me because it IS so configurable. I've got it exactly how I want it and the developers just keep adding more and more amazing features. I've tried Firefox a few times but keep coming back to Opera.

Opera 7.6 p3 has removed most of the clutter. The menus are slimmed down and there are less toolbars on by default.

But when it's so easy to tweak the user interface I don't see what the problem is anyway. If you don't like a toolbar or feature you simply turn it off.

It took me about 2 minutes to configure this preview's UI to be exactly what I wanted, it's not much hassle.

I haven't had any crashes yet, it seems very fast and bug free for a pre-beta. It's easily worth 5 stars and IMO is better than the 1.0 release of Firefox.

@Inray, Opera fully complies with W3C, and for some webdesigners it is a huge problem. Put simply, they accustomed to deal with "de facto IE standard". IMO the policy of Opera AS is right. Comply with W3C or die. Most ironic M$ also belongs to the organisation, however, they do not respect anything what comes from it.

CapZap, how about paying attention before whining about a PREVIEW?

The Window menu is there if you turn on the advanced Opera workspace in the Windows preferences.

Oh yeah, and how is Opera 8 not "mean and lean"? It's a LOT cleaner than older versions. What top, bottom etc. menus?! It doesn't even show the PANELS by default.

----------------------------------------

Oh yeah, and this jofin character and his "adware" comment...

Why wouldn't people install Opera because it's adware? IT DOES NOT install adware on your PC, as the ads are BUILT INTO OPERA!

So there's no spyware or anything, so quit spreading lies about Opera.

Opera is an excellent browser. I do not know if Firefox is better than Opera, or vice versa. I guess it depends on personal preferences. I prefer Ferrari, but some other people may prefer Lamborghini :-). Both are very good. I prefer Opera.
I do not pay much attention it is shareware/adware - I worked for a long time with ads (actually, it is not a classical form of adware - the ads advertise Opera itself only, and the browser does not connect any site what adware programs do), but I bought the browser around 4 months ago. BTW, there are many discounts, so check if you qualify. I did :-)

I do not take Internet Exploder into my consideration. It is one more upgrade of NCSA Mosaic. ROTFL! FF & Opera are much better. Bill Shakespeare would call IE "much ado about nothing".

Finally, I agree that anyone who published key for any software (independently what kind of software) should be immediately banned and his post removed.

Just a quick review between v8.54 and this build:

Fantastic upgrade, additional useful features without comprimising the excellence of the previous version. And the inclusion of saving a webpage to a single file (mht) has FINALLY been included in another browser other then IE (i've been waiting for this for YEARS), thank god!

Opera has always been ahead of IE in terms of its features for over 6 years now (as far as i can remember v3.0) but has always had the irony of not including the simple but useful features IE offered, glad after all these time, Opera is finally catching up. I just hope they match IE's simplicity one day in terms of including a right click context menu in everything they do.

This is an age old argument i've already had over in the Opera forums and they still haven't advanced with this, which is my only negitive comment to make about Opera and its company, too much pride.

If you want to be the best of the best, you got to include the best of the best that has come before you, not what tickles your fancy as a programmer, this is fact and will always be fact, and i hope that Opera includes ALL of IE's wonderful features one day. (Yes, IE was good for something once upon a time)

But back to this build, i am certainly enjoying this build over v8.54 and i doubt i'll go back, so great work Opera team!

I like Opera - and it's interesting to be able to view sites as they would appear on a cell phone.

One issue that I have with Opera's small screen support is that on many of my sites, I have a DIV area with height: 1px and opacity at zero. It works fine in Opera, Firefox, and IE - but the minibrowser expands the area and all content, which I can't find a way around.

I also don't understand why Arial Unicode MS is set as the default font for menus, but Opera opens and uses the system font for all of my menus. Each time I reinstall, I have to manually select Arial Unicode MS (even though it is set in the options screen). Each install resets this.

Weird - and I've not found anything about this on the net.

And I don't care for the widgets =) - I think they are silly =)

Also try my new IE7 for Opera skin(http://my.opera.com/comm...ize/skins/info/?id=3520) for the beta. I decided to do this new skin, cause some Opera users were saying the old skins didn't look right.

Opera is really a nice browser: light, fast to load, with a very pleasant design... And a lot of features for advanced users (but still easy to use)

The only bad point I found in this version 9 is the lack of support for Flash plugin... (but hey, it's still a beta)

Else I found the "block content" tool amazing!
Far better than Firefox (I was tired to search for extensions to get the same power as I have in Opera)

Well done Opera!

The new skin has taken a little step back with this release but I don't use it so it doesn't bother me. What I do use this for it comes through with shinning colours(why is the spell check saying I spelled colour wrong? isn't it only Americans who spell it c o l o r?) now where was I? In my testing Opera runs leaner than the others, is fast and is rendering every page I come across properly now. They continue to add new innovations and somehow still be lean. I haven't come across any issues in the last 3 builds like I did the 2 before those so it's back to a 5* rating from me. Me thinks its ready for final release seeing just how stable it's been.

This is hands down the best browser and it's a testament to what happens when you spend more time working on a product rather than promoting it.

I have been using Opera since version 3. Version 6 has finally made the default browser throne. I know some sites Opera doesn't render properly and that's usually because the site wasn't coded to W3C specs, and that's not Opera's fault. You know Microsoft's site will only be properly viewable in it's own browser.

While there are many features of Opera I am fond of. One of the smallest features happens to be a personal favorite, and that's the mouse gestures.
Hold the right mouse button and click the left - Browser Back.
Hold the left mouse button and click right - Browser Forward.
Hold the right mouse button and move the cursor down and up on the page - Duplicate page.
Knowing these and going to IE, you'll find yourself trying the gestures on IE and be like, "Crap, I'm in IE!" more than "Crap, I'm in Opera!". If you do go to a trouble or popup crazy site, remember "F12" will instantly bring up some quick options. Knowing the features of Opera really makes Opera shine like no other browser!!

I agree this release was a little rushed, but overall still the best (yes, even better than FF3 final!)

Everyone, ****make sure you start with a FRESH install of Opera***. Most of the problems I had involved my previous settings!

Make sure you keep your opera.adr, wand file, be weary of the keyboard settings.

I think many of the reviewers here have forgotten one very important fact about Opera: it is the most secure browser on the market. Time and time again Opera comes up as the leader when tested against all others in this area. As a matter of fact, I can't recall the last time it lost one of those tests. This is an exceptional browser, easily one of the best out there. Nearly every bit as good as Avant, Maxthon, Firefox or Safari. Each one could still learn a little bit from the others of course but that will always be the case. Great browser all the way around though and continuously getting better. Love the new GUI on it by the way. Well done.

Brian49: Are you telling us FF eats up much less? I've see screenshots of FF3 eating up 1GB+ on a Vista system. That's one. Two, I don't get whyeverybody is crying over memory when a lot of people nowadays got 2-4GBs of memory.

And as for the Opera itself, well, best browser has just gotten even better.

Great so far. There are UI features/enhancements spread all over. For example, a new download dialog. Overall, it definitely feels zippier. Only minor issues.

The new Developer Tools feature is handy to have around, but is pretty slugglish.

I'm not a fan of the new skin/default layout. Fortunately this version makes it even easier to find other skins. A browser is embedded in the Appearance dialog that allows you to quickly find and apply skins displayed in the same format as on the Opera site. Of course they're too proud of their new skin to actually promote this.

Also, I'm not keen on having a taskbar icon forced on me for no good reason (unless I've overlooked where it may be disabled).

I have to say - the rendering is better than it has ever been before... and so is the speed. I noticed a very high increase in speed upgrading from 9.27, and I have also not come across a webpage that doesnt display correctly and that isnt webdevelopers fault for not following standards - which is what Opera does. I am no fanboy but I am very happy with this release.
And if you think its becoming a thing in the past, just try to sync all your browser preferences, like bookmarks and speed dial with a mobile device. No other browser offers that kind of multiplatform support.

Essentially it is the best browser out there for anyone who wants to take the time to learn it. This is the biggest problem for a lot of people. The built-in features (error & java consoles, ctrl-j feature, editable search.ini, mouse gestures etc etc) are very advanced, considering the size of the package. It's fast, and most important today, it's secure. Check out scunia.com if you doubt that. Fully customizable interface. Any browser is better than IE (used v7 yet? -much laughter). I see a lot of end users who browse with Opera for the first time get intimidated by it - "it's not like the other one". Lame excuse. Check it out, it's worth the time.

Opera is faster, and secure since it doesn't use active x, but the opera team isn't concentrating on security. I have been using opera for a long time, but I wish that the opera team paid a little more attention to the security aspect. However, don't misunderstand me, this is in my opinion the best browser out there. The bad part about firefox is that they bloat the browser with a bunch of plugins that I don't need or use on the intial download of the browser; plus firefox uses basically the same engine as IE, which means active x. In opera I have the choice to add active x for particular websites if needed; otherwise, it will by default not use active x.

Opera is the way to go!
With mouse guestures, great skins, unmatched speed, excellent customizability, easy to manage favorites, and a whole lot more, Opera is the best you can get. Even if there is the occasional hiccup in rendering, check out SlimBrowser (an IE addon). As much as most of us can't stand IE, there's the rare time when you need it, so you might as well make it look better.

"Sorry Gezley. Your method is not what I want. When I click on that big "O" on my Launch Bar, I don't want to see "Start-up dialog", all I want to see are three tabs with three separate web pages. I don't want to see the "Speed Dial" and then have to click again to go to the web page I want to start at. I don't want to see one of the three pages and then have to go to "Speed Dial" to open the others. I want all three tabs available immediately, and I want each tabbed page to be the most recent variation of the page. I do not want to have to refresh a page from "History".

Opera is good, but it won't do what I want it to do, when virtually all the other browsers will. Opera needs to add this option."

There are several ways to achieve this. The simplest way:
1. Open desired pages in tabs, close all other pages.
2. From menu bar: File / Sessions / Save this session, make sure the option "Show these tabs..." is checked.
3. From menu bar: Tools / Preferences / Start-up, Choose "Continue saved sessions".

Regarding caching the pages and mass refresh:
1. Click "Windows" button on left-hand panel (press "+" and add "Windows" if you cannot find it).
2. Select open Windows / Tabs (with Ctrl, s*** or just click any and press Ctrl+A).
3. Press F5 or press Ctrl+R.

Disclaimer: I am using customized shortcut set, so your shortcuts may vary. Just right-click and choose appropriate action if the shortcuts fail to work for you.

Regards,

coover:
As gezley stated, save your pages in a session, but with slight difference. When saving to a session, make sure "Show these tabs and windows every time i start Opera" is enabled. Note this will also change your Startup preference to "Continue saved sessions". I am not sure if IE/Firefox/etc. has it, but sessions also save all open windows at that time (if you want), not just the one window of tabs you save. When you save a session with windows and have it shown on start, you can then have all windows with tabs opened automatically.

Edit:
You may also want to look here for an alternative to sessions:
http://operawiki.info/OperaTips#T00

One of the great things about Opera for power users is that there is not much you can't do, but requires editing configuration files...but not as complex as writing your own modifications in Firefox from source. It may seem simple, but users have the ability to control a lot.

You can also have a look here to see how to launch multiple web pages with one button/menu item:

http://my.opera.com/comm...ums/topic.dml?id=279623

gezley Jul 21, 2009 10.0 Build 1651 Beta

Regarding multiple home pages:
Opera goes one better. Save multiple sports-related pages to one session; multiple news related tabs to another; and multiple tech related tabs to a third. Set Opera to show the Start-up dialog when it starts and hey presto, multiple sessions. Take your pick.
Something Opera has had for as long as I can remember.
Now tell me: how long was it before Mozilla and MS figured this out? Or perhaps they haven't figured it out yet; it's been so long since I used their memory-hogging bloated garbage I just don't know.

Coover: "Let me know when Opera finally has a multiple home page feature. IE has it. Firefox has it. Safari has it. But the Opera developers think "Speed Dial" or saving web pages is enough. NO NO NO. Until Opera has the multiple home page feature, it will not be used much on my computer."

Mmmm it already has this? It's called: Speed Dial, which lets you effectively have as many "HomePages" as you like. Speed Dial is displayed every time you open a NewTab/Page, and by default lets you save 9 sites for quick-launching - either by clicking or CTRL+1 thru CTRL+9. If you like, it can even be configured to more than 9 for those with wide screen monitors.

I've used Firefox recently, I was suprised how much it looks like IE. Possibly one of the reasons it's gaining marketshare. Personally I'm glad Opera, at least, differentiates itself enough not to clone IE's appearance just to appease IE users.

One of the first things I do when installing a new Opera version is change the default skin: http://my.opera.com/community/customize/skins/
You can also do Skin Download/Selections right from the Opera interface: Tools/Appearance/Skins [*] Find more skins.

My favorite (one of the dark skins): Emil_RSD_Black : http://my.opera.com/comm...ize/skins/info/?id=2528

@ruemere: File/ Sessions -> Save this session
Session Name: MyStartup
[x] Show these tabs and windows every time I start Opera.

Close Opera, Restart, No Startup "Window" is displayed. You are presented with your saved tabs. So, it pretty much does exactly what you want.

Beta 3 == Beta 107000000000? I must have missed my arithmetic classes.

Sure, there are *weekly* builds, but not nightly builds like Firefox, so I'm not sure I understand your reasoning and argument. I'm also not sure how it can be stated "...[Opera] rates low compared to all the others except IE..." with the current BN score being 4.2.

I use Opera almost exclusively, but use Firefox when something does not work in Opera (and IE if not work in Firefox) and I do not see the majority say Firefox is crap. I have to agree with dapixn that " this browser works. Its email client is 5*** if you imap it with gmail and you dont have to find plugins here and ther to do basic things." If anything that I see, your "fanboys" of Firefox are those saying "FF rulez and others is junk". I dislike wearing my FF s*** or hat in public because people who think they're cool praise me with the dribble but are ignorant and not open-minded.

Not bashing Firefox, but "oh, a new Firefox version is out......uggh, none of my add-ons work because they are not compatible with this version. doh!"

The BN single browser "speed test" does show v10 as being "...the slowest browser on earth (except IE)". Can you honestly say that you can notice the difference? I can't recall from the article, but did that test include all the FF add-ons that will be required to support the same feature set in Opera? I value speed, but I value productivity, efficiency, ease of use, configurability, and innovation more (to an extent). Yes, if something takes 100x longer to do and is noticeable, I may sacrifice those criteria.

This build is working great so far; I have not had a single issue that I can recall since I began running the v10 releases.

@PhatEster, I don't know what you are talking about...
If you mean links on a page, you open the Panel, click on "Links" select the links you want, and rightClick open or save.
If you mean links in your bookmarks, then the only options are saving selected as either HTML or an .ADR file.

@Vimes, Honestly I don't care that Opera has a torrent option built-in, I use uTorrent. The fact that it is still only 5-6MB and has a plethora of options like mail, and torrent and messaging is nothing short of impressive. I don't recall the exact size, but the last time I installed FireFox it's program folder was over 14MB and you had to download it's Mail program separately.

As far as Opera vs Chrome, try a different skin, and right click on any toolbar in Opera, "Customize" and start deleting stuff you don't want.
For example, I have my StatusBar at the bottom with:
[Clock] [New][New][Fixed Spacer][Bookmarks? ] [Panels][x][»][Status Display][Zoom%]
[x] == close panel
[»] == open displayed panel in a new Tab.

My addressbar is also at the bottom:
[DisplayViewMenu][Back][Refresh][Wand][AddressBar][Go][DisplayViewMenu][FitPageToScreen]

All the other menu's are removed. My View Menu - when it is displayed, is also at the bottom, and appears above the AddressBar, it contains:
[Home][Back][Forward][Rewind][FastForward][Top10][Bookmarks][IdentifyAs][x enable plugins][Author|User Mode][Show Images]

I have not seen any other browser that allows as much customization as Opera does. Period. You can even *easily* customize what the Menu's you want to display, or ANY of the context menu's are. By editing Application Data\Opera\Opera\profile\menu\standard_menu (1).ini

"There is a reason it is in a perpetual beta cycle..."

So much for your qualifications. It's in a perpetual beta cycle because they're for *different versions*. New releases with new features, features which are usually trend setting for the browser market. And if this wasn't enough to discredit you to anyone who even knows what a browser is (which most web users don't), the claims about IE will fix that. Thanks for visiting, don't let the door hit you on the way out!

Those who know dont talk. Those who talk dont know a thing...

If you dont like the 'crap', why stop by to write a review ? You are the fanboy.

Let the ones who use this, continue to recommend it to the few folks, who are prepared to try things, and see for themselves.

The software works, to its own huge and very independent merit. Not too many opera users can be bored enough to write FF reviews for example.

goodluck.
-------------

To anyone with an open mind, and looking for web efficiency - this browser works. Its email client is 5*** if you imap it with gmail and you dont have to find plugins here and ther to do basic things.

If you try it and don't find it efficient, feel free to ditch it. But dont until you have actually tried it.

goodluck.

This Browser is simply the best. I'm wondering how IE and his stupid interface (compared to operas great functional, MDI- and user-friendly Interface) could come that far.
There's a cool community around Opera, check my.opera.com for skins, sidebars and other stuff.
Yes, some of you people saying they need IE sometimes, you are right, some pages are constructed with such strange kinds of java-script oder DHTML... But that's the web-designers fault, not operas! ;-)

Beta 2, like beta 1 has never crashed on me, and worked well. I've got 10 tabs open, (several with flash in them) and memory used is 2192Mb. Fantastic, esp compared to firefox (which I also love, but it loves my RAM wayyy too much)

Now the Opera are after the beta release, more fixes will be continued to be added to Opera.

There is still time for changes. Lets all look forward for the next weekly, it is rumored to have a lot of fixes.

For users of the weeklies, build 8414 was released as beta2.

This version is quite stable and robust. The only gripe I have is during the installation process. Even when choosing the upgrade option which keeps your existing settings, this beta did not keep them, causing me to completely reconstruct my personal settings, toolbars, buttons, etc.

"firefox - memory hog, slow as molasses startup times
ie7- worst toolbar imaginable
ie6- lacks features
opera- too many to list"

Before you post again you better see your doctor. Also I would like to know how many days you have been using Opera. Install, play for 10-15 minutes and uninstall… “too many to list” is nice review :o)

Maybe you think this way:

- too many ways to customize toolbar, interface etc.
- too many things to better security
- too many free memory left when you using Opera
- too many ours you need to figure all Opera features
- too many people like and enjoy this browser
- too many features for your brain
- too many of too many

This is all in all the best browser ever. More you use Opera more you like it. I have been playing with almost all browsers on PC and MAC platforms and no1 is even close to Opera. The list of features is really big but if you don’t need it all of them just don’t use it. Simplicity, speed, security and small recourse usage is main Opera features. If you still looking for good browser, go with Opera for one week and then make decision.

You haven't by any chance set preferences -> network -> max connections to a large number, have you? That chokes the server, which is why you don't get all the images. If you haven't, then try setting it to a lower number anyways.

For the review: Opera is quite simply the best browser ever. Period. It's
- Smaller
- Faster
- More feature-filled
than anything else out there. (Note: all of the above three are understatements.) *At the same time*. Seriously, that should not even be possible. There are a grand total of two "problems" with it: it could be even better; and it isn't free.

About the ad-ware - Opera has just about the least best ad solution ever. It uses Google's text ads, which means it's just about impossible for them to be in any way intrusive or disruptive, -and- they are context-sensitive, meaning they display ads relating to whatever you're currently browsing. Most people actually found them _useful_. I mean, seriously: *ads that are actually useful*. That, also, should not be possible.

But, apparently, it is.

There are not enough stars possible to convey how excellent this is.

Ive been a registered user since v6, and v7 looks better but its not as good as v6. More sites are accessible with v7 than were with v6, but it crashes more and is slower than v6, plus the wand aint so stalwart as it was. So as far as Opera goes, support and all, they get a 5, and it pains me but v7 gets a 3, so all things considered I give this a 4.

I have found a couple of issues though. If you try to create a google maps search it fails miserably. Not sure if this is to do with how the map search is submitted or if it's an issue with Opera. Also noticed Opera will take an age to open or close IF synchronization is enabled and the Opera site is somehow unreachable (as it was today when every Opera user and his dog went to get a piece of the 10.0 action).

Although I'm a big fan of most open-source products,I've totally jumped ship from Firefox to Opera. I am SICK of the crashes, memory issues etc with Firefox, not to mention its bloated "cousin", Thunderbird. With Opera I have everything I need in one excellently-coded package. Which brings me to some of the comments made by improvelence below:

>Slow in comparison to Firefox, IE6 and 7, Mozilla, Seamonkey...ugly.

Hmmm...well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I guess; I've always thought Opera looks pretty elegant, comparatively. And among the browsers I've tried (and I've tried quite a few), only Maxthon on Windows is faster. And you're saying that SeaMonkey, of all things, is prettier? Puhleeez.

>This browser looks like it came off of Windows 95. The buttons are goofy and the tabs are way too big.

Again, subjective...although doing a visual measurement, Opera's tabs look, if not smaller, at least no bigger than those of Firefox in its default theme.

> Major problems rendering websites...

And a lot of web authors have major problems writing valid code. In my experience, if a page carries a DTD and passes validation, Opera will render it beautifully.

>low user base.

Hmmm...the last I checked, IE was still number one in terms of user base, and so I guess that might mean that the size of the user base has really no relation to the quality of the browser. And anyway, Firefox's user base is still dwarfed by that of IE, so I guess Fx's userbase might be described as "low" as well.

> Waste of time.

I've become convinced that Firefox 1.5.x has become a waste of time, a major step back from Fx 1.0.

As for Flash, I turn that crap off anyway. It's a blight ;)

By the way, Opera does not just suddenly lose your bookmarks so if they are missing you probably did something wrong.

Oh, and Opera can't support Roboform, it's up to Roboform to support Opera. It's not like Opera can rewrite Roboform to support it!

Well Opera team ISNT lazy as a matter of fact... Just see the plethora of features being integrated into Opera, WITHOUT slowing or bulking down the browser! On the other hand, Firefox makes no significant improvements with a release; besides I still get the Firefox / Deer Park 'consuming too much cpu' bug inspite of no-extensions and clean installations.

As far as page rendering bugs are concerned, its present in ANY browser, even IE. They are due to poor webdesigning, not due to poor coding of the browser. As far as I personally am concerned, I havent come across a single such site that renders badly in Opera. But mention Firefox, and voila! Slashdot comes on top of the list..

But I still dont understand why we are Firefox-Opera bashing.. Instead we should come together and bash IE!

i have no rendering problems anywhere w/ Opera-- the fastest browser on the face of this earth. Contrast it w/ FF-- the slowest & buggiest browser on the face of this earth...i'm a bit weary of constantly having to tweak & debug FF up the kazoo...though i'll take it over IE any day.

not the fastet browser on earth for me... (netcaptor is faster on my machine) but surely the best (because of configuration abilities). i miss only some few features, which are not important for most of the browsing time... firefox can not match up to this one...

opera makes my browsing convenient.

This has been, my main Browser, now about 3 weeks. It's far more stable than IE7, and works a heck of a lot faster! It is just amazing how good this browser is. And the Tabs, and Bookmarks,in the way you can, set them up, is just as easy as Moms apple Pie! And Opera, has there own community, that you can join, and talk to others, that are enjoying Opera to. Try it, I think you wont be sorry you did.

In that case, get the Classic Installer (Wise), instead of the Installshield Windows MSI.

make sure u pay close attention to the setup screen. you must choose the same option as you chose for previous installs. that would be either 'single user' or 'for all users'. just choose the same directory, then the right option is selected automatically.

i tested this version and did not loose my settings. the installer which is linked here (executable) still provides the options i am referring to (they are hidden until you choose another directory form the previous). i have not tested the other msi installer. i dont say there is no bug in the installer. i just dont want people to be scared away. just make a backup of your directories. you should do that anyway.

hm... well my option is 'NO individual profiles', maybe the bug concerns only those who choose indivduals ..... (wich is default)

CHANGELOG

Several memory leaks fixed;
Display issues fixed - noticeable e.g. on gmail and vBulletin sites;
Fixed bug with attachment button on gmail;
Fixed bug with pages not loaded on restart;
Fixed content blocker;
Fixed Proxy On/Off toggle in Quick Preferences;
Added setting for show widget handle in Preferences > General;

Had the same problem about the settings which were lost on install. :-/
Also didn't get the same screen as before to choose update, instead of new install.
Let's remember it's a beta, so these things can happen.
If you don't want the trouble, then don't use a beta, but instead wait for the official release.

However just copied the previous settings over from My Documents and every setting/bookmark/note, theme, ... was back on restart. LOL
Still my most preferred browser. :-)

A fantastic browser. I'm also experiencing certain concerns over rendering -- my sites look exactly the same on IE and Firefox, and I go to great lengths to make sure that my sites are 100% CSS and XHTML compliant, yet many of them will have Opera-related quirks.

I'm not too sure about the Opera Widgets system either ... it seems rather odd to have a separate Widgets layer associated with Opera that do not actually benefit the browsing experience. Why not just have this as a separate entity?

This browser is just getting better and better!

@marty & krgood:
Check the paths in Help->About Opera
The settings and bookmarks are probably not lost, but stored in a different location than before for some reason. It could be that you changed from multi-user to single-user, or selected a different place to install Opera. You might also want to try the Classic Installer which you can get from http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/ since there seems to be some issues with the new MSI installer.

@bunghole:
2): I guess you mean the history dropdown? You can turn it off in opera:config. Search for 'Auto Dropdown' and deselect it.
3): In Tools->Preferences you can choose to delete cookies and empty cache on exit. You can also set number of addresses to remember to 0.

Den har alt man trenger, nedlasting, e-post og mye mere.
Jeg kan på det varmeste anbefale den til alle.
Men pass opp den er svært vanedannende.

PS. Vi trenger noen Norske også her.
We need som Norwegian review also.

No problems here. Made it USB portable in about 10 minutes. Runs completely without a flaw.
Totally superior to FFX
Things i wish they would get rid of
(1) Widgets
(2) IRC
Things i wish they would add
(1) Extensions as per FFX (but yes, i'm aware of security issues)
(2) Page Preview like IE7 (tile is not the same!)
(3) Jabber/multi protocol chat client like Miranda
(4) Import/Export of Wand files as XML (so you can transfer to things like KeePass)
Things i wish they would change
(1) The default skin, it's bloody terrible. I'm using Marina which looks nice and clean, never mind the pink!

Well, I have been jumping between opera & Firefox a lot. And much say that there isn't a actual winner.

Both are amazing browsers. I'm currently using more Firefox but I really liked Opera and miss some of the features like Speed Dial™ for example.

Somehow firefox is actually quicker than opera on my comp, actually kinda wondering why. I didn't even have widgets ( oh btw, Don't use widgets I think they aren't that good and can take some performance ) and I use some add blocking addons on firefox and still running great ( opera has also add blocking capabilities but take alot more time to tweak ).

Final: " Try Both ( Opera & Firefox ) and choose best for your usage. You can't go wrong with your choice " =)

oh and btw "maxstep". That's why firefox is so popular in most cases. =) for example I don't even use half of the features that are in opera. =) But I don't mind going one site and get one adblocking addon and that's it... so... well that's why I told my opinion/suggestion to try both. =)

and "hap8192739", I would actually remove irc because I have another "Full featured" program for it. But yes, you are right some people love the All-In-One thingie. I just hate when they put all these things on browser. Think about it... Browser = websites. But if that feature takes little usage/performance then It isn't a problem.

Soon We see browser with skype features and stuff... hehe. Pointless efford. ^^ And file size goes up to 40-50m.

The start bar has been replaced by a "dialer" bar.

Anyway, without doubt, Opera is the most secure browser to date having a user group of several millions. Rendering problems are being fixed rapidly, but the real problem is that web developers don't create websites meeting W3C standards, in which case Opera would render it perfectly because it meets standards better than any other browser.

Best tabs functionality, in fact, this was the browser that invented the idea of tabs. I've been a dedicated user since version 7, and this product always delivers.

Don't use this beta because it's full of memory leaks out the ying yang.

Best browser ever. The new Speed Dial is simply a HUGE breakthrough!!!

TGB72, FireFox is nothing better. Consumes fairly the same amount of memory.

#1 Opera #2 FireFox , if you ask me.

http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/

Known issues:
The static Linux packages are unfortunately corrupted.
Overrides your search.ini file instead of merging them: Make a backup before installing.
Thumbnails should not reload on every startup.
"Reload every..." is missing from the context menu.
Middle-click doesn't open pages in the background.
Back button doesn't go back to Speed Dial.
Several skin and display problems.
Contains some hardcoded not translatable strings.
The "What is Speed Dial" link doesn't go anywhere.
Forgetting to put your partner's blog in SD1 can have dramatic consequences

Changelog:
Fixed several crashes when printing, sending mail, removing active web panel...
Lots of minor fixes.
Start bar is replaced by Speed Dial, Top-10 and Bookmark buttons can be found in the Appearance dialog and added to other toolbars.
Canvas: Stopped drawing lines from origin (0, 0) when using path functions in accordance with changes in WHATWG canvas spec. Note to Widget developers: This may cause problems with your Widgets if you use Canvas.

Pages load in a flash.. has tons of options.. and is not bloated. Absolutely love the mouse gestures.. i know that's available in firefox as well thru extensions, but this thing just works!

10 THINGS THAT MAKE ME LOVE OPERA:
________________________________________________
(1) When you scroll one page at a time, it's actually scrolls ONE full page, instead of 3/4 like others;
(2) You can customize fonts in every single element of the web page;
(3) Fully customizable keyboard shortcuts!
(4) Number keys 1 & 2 allow you to quickly navigate backward and forward through your tabs (on top of other key combinations);
(5) It remembers its last bookmarked folder location — what a concept, duh!
(6) Keyboard shortcuts for increasing/decreasing the size of text;
(7) It has close-left and close-right buttons for tabs;
(8) Notes feature in the Panel section is extremely useful;
(9) The ability to save sessions;
(10) A true multi-platform browser, which for me means I get to seamlessly use it with Ubuntu.

i use firefox and opera simultaneously

my #1 tipp of the day for opera customization: delete search.ini and add a directory named "seach.ini" to the installation folder. so you get rid of the default seach engines (ebay amazon.com) and installation wont be able to add them again. just keep your custom seach.ini file in profile directory.

here is a list of pros and cons that are on top in my mind:

opera advantages:

+ faster & more convenient/intuitive in most routine tasks like window management; adding/changing searchengines. type F2 for adressbar and search bar (keywords) + history + bookmarks seach in one box. this dropdown thing will stay unmached by any FF extention, performance wise.
+ links panel is better than FF linky extention in FEW situations (should have support for regular expressions and save a history).
+ customizing toolbars & co is verry easy. everyone can learn to edit ini files or the skins.
+ better sidebar+bookmarks management (much more responsive and accessible)
+ vertical tabs on the right side. more toolbar flexibility in generall.
+ no matter how much useless features they add (like mail/chat/torrent) opera becomes more performant, not more bloated. supperior programming style, like utorrent.
+better zooming
+better toggling of javascript/plugins/cookies etc with custom buttons. one button can do many things at once. you dont have to code pages of java script to get some realy smart buttons.

opera disadvantages

-there will allways be one or two bugs that are actually really bugging, if you stay with latest builds.
-no rectangular selection, no html copy.

---

firefox advantages

+ more reliable on some fancy heavy sites
+ cool menu features (dragndrop of bookmakrs into a prescise menu position, right click, deleting ...)
+ linky extention better than opera's links panel in most situations.
+ toogle toolbar visibility based on mouse hoover
+ some very unique and usefull addons, no doubt.
+ better management of userstyles (stylish extention)

firefox disadvantages:
- XUL is nuts. no average user can or wants to code his own XUL extentions, not even for the simple tasks like those you could achieve in opera.
- most skins can't hide XUL's clumsiness.
- XUL is f**king slow. it's the azureus of browsers.
- allot of extention features should be in it by default.

@ fuhayer

so you don't like opera and think firefox is a step ahead becasue when you open a new tab it takes you to that tab and you do not like that, is that correct?

perhaps you have not seen the options directly below "open in new tab" that says "open in background tab."

so 5 starts for opera, as it is fast and very easy to use and has all the features i need. anyone who can read a drop down menue will love this browser! :)

You can easily stop those annoying popups from appearing, and closing unwanted windows is a snap. Overall this is a great browser, and a great alternative to IE/Netscape. Easy. Just easy. Easy to set up. Easy to use. Easy-going. And the 1090 sure does seem to have improved stability over the previous betas.

One slightly arcane point, but I'll make it nonetheless: Ever tried to make a browser run on a 486-66 laptop with 16 MByte RAM running Windows NT? Well, with Opera it's all in a day's work...

Irrelevant? It is going the other way, my friend.

Opera is now one of the highest ranking browsers on the new ACID3 test.
Keep it up guys.

JUST ONE CONCERN:
I have been getting complaints that the OPERA browser is streaming information from the users local IP to a remote location "Opera Software ASA -213.236.208.60."

This could be just for beta monitoring purposes. If not we might have to place this remote IP on a black list data pool.

If anyone can shed some light on this, please do.

@godofthunder

This may be due to the Fraud Protection (Opera's anti-phishing implementation). Check Prefs-Advanced-Security (enable/disable it) to see if that's the case.

Love it. New skin is grean, improves usability a lot.

Known issues:
Dragonfly does not work when JavaScript is disabled.

Improved contrast between active and inactive tabs in the tab bar
Higher contrast for the text on inactive tabs to increase readability, especially on laptops
Brighter background in the panels
A tiny bit more color: We added the Home button as default by popular demand
We tuned the color intensity of the color themes (Tools: Appearance: Color scheme) to be more usable with both this and other skins. Try it out again!
Improved visibility of the scrollbars
Buttons no longer grow wider when you press them
Nicer background for security status on https pages

Changelog
Fixed the panel selector dropdown
Fixed all search related bugs in the previous snapshot
Changed default Speed dial search engine from Yahoo to Ask
Made it possible to set a custom title for the Developer Tools (Dragonfly) Window using in the tool top level document
Fixed a plugin crash

Phat Esther:

I actually always thought the nick was "An Alpha Tester", but I don't see an "h" if you just deleted "anal". If that was really the case, I commend you in that respect. Alpha Tester works with your crying review of all software it seems.

Anyways, after all this time, I decided to try to decipher your gibberish and MAY have found the issue you keep bringing up. What I have done and what you should have done, is properly submit a bug report to Opera or on the forum. Yes, you have posted to the forum, but those posts were done in the same respect that you show here--thus disregarded.

If you want to test what I have found, try downloading multiple links while you have the "transfers" or "downloads" manager open when doing so. If the manager is not opened, I see most links fail. Give it a try and please try to post a comprehensible message of the results.

although I've downloaded this for both Windows and Linux, this review is Linux specific as I didn't really notice much in the windows version.

In linux, everything looks superb now. Email, dialog boxes and even web pages look great, I'm guessing they've done something with font rendering or something but it looks superb (I'm using the GCC4 QT4 .deb package if anyone is interested)

it's very stable so far, and noticeably quicker than any other Opera 10 I've used (either windows or linux) - still not on par with Google Chrome which is significantly faster in both win & linux but it seems faster than Firefox.

Although it eats ram in Windows (and is very slow to let go of it when you close the app), in Linux it's happily sitting here with 10 tabs open using 168MB. pretty good IMO and fantastic compared to Firefox and Opera in Windows.

Every page I visit seems to render and work properly, no issues to report, major or minor so far.

I'm very happy with it.

Crikey! awesome review from phat esther, nothing like a review chock full of details /s

I have this working perfectly now. I've only come across one or two sites that don't render properly but i'll put my bottom dollar on them not adhering to standards.. All my bank accounts can be accessed just fine. So no problems there. I even have this running portably off a USB stick. My only issue is that Unite services can be a bit temperamental sometimes but i thinks this is more to do with the service as opposed to the browser.
No other browser comes close.

Pretty fast and full of features browser. Opera 10 certainly works better and faster than IE 6,7 & 8, and in my experience it beats FF in resource consumption.
Now what I cannot understand is why some people gives Opera the lowest rate without reviewing it and instead they just exalt FF features, this is the wrong place to remark the goods of FF, go to FF thread/review for that, here is for judge Opera for its features and functionality. Do you think that it deserves 1 star?, well then say why, make a good description of your experience with Opera and present valid points for such low rate. I mean the fact that some people finds FF better than Opera doesn't mean that Opera is a bad browser. Appeal to that lonely neuron an try to be objective people.

I know I'm not supposed to, but I've been using the betas as my main browser for about a month now with absolutely no problems. The last beta actually had a Unite that worked! Simply awesome. 10 is simply way better than 9.64 which itself is a brilliant browser. I've had a couple of website (really obscure ones) break but 99.9% it is simply brilliant.
I simply can't understand how people like Bittermann can rate this a 1. Not even IE would get a 1 so how can they rightfully give this a 1? Opera has lead the way since day one and knocks spots off Firefox. The number of innovations coped by Ffx from Opera is not even funny and even then most of them are just crappy add-ons that don't get updated when a new (buggier/more resource hungry) version of Ffx get's released. I regularly open 80-90 tabs in Opera following links in sites like Digg, Reddit, Slashdot, Dzone etc. something that is absolutely impossible with Ffx.

Excellent as usual, this weeks weekly is much more stable that last week. Seems they are close to a 9.20 release.

As for Javascript speed, check out javascript benchmarks, Opera wipes the floor with everything including IE7 and FF when it comes to javascript speed.

For anyone considering these, these are ALPHA quality, not even beta or release candidate, expect bugs...

Perfect browser.

This is the browser that Mozilla has been trying to clone for quite sometime now with Firefox. Each release of Firefox comes with some "new features," all of which have been around in Opera for years.

This is the only browser that should exist, and it is, for very good reason, the engine used in Dreamweaver, mobile phones, Nintendo Wii & DS, and the list goes on.

If you don't use it already, there couldn't be a better time to switch over. This is browsing paradise.

i find opera very easy to use and easily customizable when you can figure it out. it has nearly all the features that you need extensions for in firefox standard and is web standards compliant. if something is broken it's not opera's fault, its the web designer's fault for catering to one specific broken browser. i have been using opera since opera 6 and haven't looked back since. i have tried firefox and really, i'm not impressed with it. its a good alternative browser but has none of the functionality out of the box like opera has.

what upsets me more is that opera is trying to cater to the firefox user by changing names and shortcuts so they are universal.

Hello! Opera might be just a little bit less stable than Firefox, but it is still very good. Opera is not bloated, is not slow (it is fast!) and it's very good. Same i can say about Firefox: fast, stable and not bloated. Opera interface is better than Firefox, also it has a lot more features than Firefox (sorry Mozilla users, but it's true) - even if Opera is smaller than Firefox. This does not mean i do not like both! Both are very, very good.

The best Opera ever, and I've been using it forever. The only thing missing is ad blocking (and I've tried to fix that with OperaAdFilter, my new tool at http://www.monroeworld.com/operafilter - my way of giving back). The IRC chat implementation (its not ICQ anymore for those that worry about that) is very good, and I regularly use it. The panels are better all around. A very solid, great release by Team Opera. Thank you!

Is BetaNews becoming AlphaNews ? As said below, a new stable version, 9.24, has just been released today, which is the one to use for production.

9.5 alphas are still at very early stages and buggy, lacking major basic features. This has to be fully understand before any try.

Kestrel is really fast anyway.

This is perhaps the BEST web browser I have ever used. As pointed out in the below review, IE is in fact loaded almost half way into memory when you start the OS. So as he said, comparing IE to Opera is not totally a fair trial. Of course IE will load faster if its already half loaded to begin with.

As for Opera, I love it, the MDI interface is great. Not having to worry about a site that opens 200 popups cluttering up your taskbar is nice too. Only one thing that they need to work on, the plugin capabilities. I have a few that I would like to use but cant just yet, but I am willing to wait. I am still evaluating this and if they improve a few more features I am planning to purchase it.

In my honest opinion, a browser doesnt get better than this. Give it a shot :)

first before you judge Opera or others..don't forget that IE is partaily loaded into normal windows run..(because of the shared part betwwen windows and IE..) other web-browsers are loaded fully when you run it. either than that nothing is in memory..so if you want to compare web-browsers just test it on linux or mac and see the diffrence.. or remove IE from windows (which will increase performance about 10%).. do i need IE partaily loaded if i use the system for autocad or photoshop.. i need more space...thats why i never regret removing IE from my system..

I like opera because it is compact. it can be like other web-browsers with the cost of larger size..if you don't like it go to mozilla..it is a faster-netscape-clone..

Opera improves slowly becuase it is maintenance releases..(that why it is sub-numbering x.xx not v7.0 or v8.0).and if you have bugs just post it the beta forum.. it will be fixed in future rleases..

well, opera for my needs is more than enogh..(not 100% but better than others..) my second one is mozilla which is going rock.. but it is large to opera and small to netscape or IE ..(again IE can make smaller install becuase most of the shared file..which are not updated.."OLD"..is already on your system..oooh)

finally don't play with fire

This is a very nice browser, even with the ad displayed at the top of the screen... which I hardly even notice.

I used to be a die-hard IE6 and Microsoft supporter. But am no longer, after seeing the light.

Anyone who knows about all the hidden spyware Microsoft has hidden into IE6, would switch to Opera in a heartbeat. And yes I didn't believe it till I read about it, and saw for myself. For one thing Microsoft hides in a locked system hidden file, every web site you have ever visited since installing IE6... even setting IE to delete the list, it doesn't delete them in the hidden file. I would like Microsoft to please explain why this hidden file exists, and why it stores everything. (you can use a "washer" type program to get rid of it, but I no longer trust anything made by Microsoft).

I now see why so many people hate Microsoft. Perhaps one day Linux will rise above Windows for game support... we can only hope. (and yes I used to be a strong anti-linux person, but no more).

I am really getting sick of FF fanboys coming here and crying about rendering issues when FF has them too. Then they have the nerve to complain about speeed?!?!?! Are f'n kidding me?!?!?! If you actually took the time to 1)test the speeds yourself or 2)Look at independent tests, they prove quite clearly that Opera is much faster than FF all while using way less memory.

Safe, fast, lightweight and inventive all sum up this browser that just keeps getting better

Great browser which hardly ever let me down. Ergonomically and speedwise superior to any other browser on the market.

Nevertheless I agree with the other reviewers that the Opera programmers should put M2 and the IRC client to sleep. Those old horses did their duties. This thunderthing from Mozilla doesn't get developed further either. With all the good webmail services the benefit of desktop mail clients for private users isn't what it used to be.

The functionality is there already. Create a folder for the bookmarks that you wish to open as "home pages", Then from the bookmarks menu, go back to that folder and at the top you will see an option "open all folder item". This will open all the links you put into that folder. Done.
Change log anyone?

Advantages:
- very fast load times
- very secure + antiphising
- best rendering engine on the market
- ntlm support
- 9.25 gonna support full CSS3, know you can be yealous

Disadvantages:
- some bad coded websites don't work in Opera
- some old javascripts exclude Opera, due to browser sniffing
sorry I can't find any other bad things

I'm honest and tell you the truth:

Opera is the only browser that passes the ACID2 test, even Firefox 3 Alpha doesn't pass it.

Oh, for the IE fans: "You still don't pass, sorry guys.."

Opera was commercial in the past and it was revolutionairy, it didn't had the bugs other browser had. But it other weird bugs that were annoying.

However they learned from the past and made the most secure and fastest browser in the world.

There are very very rare moments when I encounter problems while developing websites with Opera, much less than Firefox and yes not comparable with any IE.

But I'm pretty sure you'll not see any rendering errors anytime while developing websites in Opera.

As one reviewer before me I just can acknowledge what my betanews collegues said:
"I am very pleased by the improvements made recently, and I cant wait to get my hands on the 9.5 betas..."

Opera *is* faster for my pages. It does use less memory. Ramping up to get it to act how I want it is still a learning curve.
- I can't seem to control the toolbars to the extent I can with Firefox.
-The help system is pretty bad, I had to look offsite to find what I needed for several functions.
-I do miss some firefox plugins like Greasemonkey scripts.

Right now I'd give Opera a 91 and Firefox 3.5 a 93 out of 100 score. I will keep Opera on and try and use it more day to day. I see no reason why people *have* to love one browser and *hate* another.

@mjm01010101 Opera already has support for Userscript.
This build is very stable so far, good work.

Holy Smokes! Phat Esther and her incomprehensible rage regarding multiple link, file, or whatever-save she talks about. These comments looked remarkably similar another's: analphatester. I have to say Phat Esther == analphatester. What is the reasoning for another account? It has been questioned and discussed previously just wtf analphatester was referring to.

I like how Blaxima put it "Another release and another review (and I use that term loosely) from bitterman and Phat Esther."

With more recent development releases, and focusing on Unite more, I think they are coming close to the final, just wanting Unite to be polished before.

Just downloaded the beta to try the new 10 version for the first time - well, what more can I say! The native skin is vastly improved; the option to position the Tab bar left or right very welcome, the option to have up to 25 pages on the Speed Dial fantastic. Start-up speed and browsing speed are what you would expect of Opera. A brilliant, brilliant browser, without rival in appearance, performance, ease of use, security, and native feature set. Right-click context menus chock-full of extras; the ability to create your own search boxes and put them on your Personal bar; duplicate tabs, and many many extras, nearly all of which Opera implemented years ago. The only browser I find a joy to use, and all without the need for "plug-ins".
I can only surmise that those regulars who come here to attack Opera have some ulterior motive for doing so. I honestly can't imagine a single good reason for launching such vituperative attacks over and over again on this browser. I first bought Opera in 2004, when you had to pay for the full version (without ads), and I would gladly do the same today if they charged for it. It's quite simply that good. People who are wiling to explore its riches will find this out themselves, and should not be put off by the irrational criticism of those who come here on a daily basis just to attack Opera.

Odd. If I click on a bookmark I've placed on my toolbar this build crashes every time. If I choose a bookmark from the menu nothing at all happens. If I go to "Manage Bookmarks" then double-click on a bookmark, Opera opens the site. This only happens today; I used the new build yesterday and didn't notice any such behaviour. Still, it's an alpha ...

Great improvements. No more crashings with this build in vi$ta.
Ad blocking feature is included, but you will have to "mark" contents you do not want to display. You only have to right click a page background and select "Block content..." from the contextual menu. No plugin needed.
It works, I think a good idea to implement is to allow the downloading of a precomiled list to avoid most of the manual blocking for every site. There are some good sites offering compiled blocking lists (adblock plus anyone?)...

Yeah...Much better now! :)
They fixed a LOT of things here (build 2577) and the new "windows" (=washed) skin alleviates the bloated look&feeling of the previous release.
Guess I'll consider it as my default browser again.

Very fast, bends to my will in every way possible, tool bars, adding custom search engines to the search bar.Saving my personal info and so on.

Only thing annoying is the history layout, I prefer IE's***ory layout, and using the third party Search.INI editor, eventhough it works fine, just seems like it should've been built in as well.

Look Maa No extensions! ;-)

Opera is fast, secure, and feature-rich.
Windows and linux versions available. I love "wand", the autologin tool. You really can configure Opera to your heart's desire. Opera is constantly under developement with regular updates. My only complaint is no 64 bit support as yet.
Opera will spoil you on other browsers.

Excellent - very stable, highly configurable, lightning fast. Some pages render a little differently to what they do in IE or IE-based browsers, but still render perfectly well.

scodan: perhaps you might want to install plugins for quicktime/WMP/whatever it is you want to use? I mean, as good as Opera is, it doesn't come with a video decoder built-in (and native support for WMP is out of the question because they have a unified code base and port to like 5 OSes or something) (although, they should indeed make it more generally known that the plugins exist at all, are necessary, how to install them, etc).

Otherwise, it's hands down the best browser ever. Not saying there's no room for improvement (it still crashes sometimes, a few sites still render badly (barely any that I go to though), plugin process could be easier), but even with all that, it gets 5 stars because it's still that much better than anything else.

the panels are interesting an interesting idea. i think the idea of a built-in chat client is interesting too. it's a bit more a "technology preview" than the standard opera.

I am (or should I say was) an avid IE6 fan trying out the competition just for fun. I compared Firebird and Opera head to head. No contest, Opera is by far the fastest browser on earth. Tabs, mouse gestures, customizable, everything including a mail client - and all under 4MB!

@nms04,
As Opera is one of the most standards compliant browsers around I would hazard a guess that the fault lies with the MySpace site developers. To dock Opera a point because of this proves that you are clueless when it come to the web. (That fact that you use MySpace at all also gives this away.)

"Scrolling the page of the result of the acid2 test removes the top of the smiley face as well as moves an additional black line underneath the 'scalp.' And this is simply scrolling with the wheel."

That's what's EXPECTED. Acid2 isn't supposed to be scrolled.

Opera passes Acid2, and that's that.

Being a staunch supporter of firefox for years,i would admit this version of opera is far superior than any other browser available till date....
The new features which seem to flow in every now and then...makes it special...
It also make me wonder what firefox has achieved in good 2 yrs??
It has got same features which opera had in 7! two years ago..
sorry, but with all great features and e-mail client,i dont think anybody comes close!

Agree w/ Diam0nd. Methinks Stisev's system (Quote: As a an self-proclaimed Opera fanboy, I urge you all **NOT** to use the latest betas)must be 1nf3ct3d with porno malware: I've'd ZERO issues with all v9 builds on 9x,ME,XP,Ubuntu4/5/6! (btw, was that as a self, as an elf, as an efin-pro, a** an, Hassan, sans self, saint Elmo?) I'd recommend to confirm this by testing on a different system, or on a new hard disk or empty partition w/ newly-installed OS.. buona fortuna, caro.

I do hope though, that eventually, interfacing at music sites like Aol archive, Artistdirect, etc. becomes a reality. I don't really hold this against Opera, even though all the Moz browsers work fine at those two sites(meaning audio & video clips there can't be played on Opera)....as there are still sites that work with IE Only & No Other Browser, not even any of the ie engine variants like Maxthon, etc.

Btw, for those crying about instability, PLEASE, WAKE UP! This is BETAnews, not FinalNews, OK? Those BETAs are SUPPOSED to be unstable, because they are meant for testing, so please stop crying, because this is getting rediculous.
