Defaults settings could have been made better, video driver for improved speed needs a lot of work, lots of keys don't work remotely (not, I'm not talking about Ctrl+Alt+Del), otherwise a very good software. |

it's got some powerful features, but this software like many like it should only be used if you don't mind reading through the documentation, and even then you will still be left with many confused aspects, The biggest confusion that I still read about in forum's, is the concept "Server" and "Viewer" A bit like remote desktop, Host & Client, For the beginners it's quite amazing how these concepts are hard to grasp, And like wise, the same issues can be seen in programs like "RealVNC" & "UltraVNC", For the absolute beginner "TeamViewer" is the way to go, Hopefully, Programs like "UltraVNC" will eventually go though a revolutionary GUI Rewrite, Because there all based on the same theme, one can see so many similarities between them, What they need is a new novice interface, or perhaps a driven wizard that guides the new user through the complex interface options that are given to the user, Which is what "TeamViewer" has done, they have rewritten the entire GUI interface from scratch, and made it 21st century worthy, "UltraVNC" and even "RealVNC" is still based on the old concepts, even the look, and the thinking behind the interface is till the old way's, Programs like "TeamViewer", and "LogMeIn" are the way forward, the complexities are still there, but hidden from the user, having a box open with 20 different settings is enough to put most people of, and the thing is, efficiency is the new way of thinking now, streamlining is the 21st century motto, Programs like “UltraVNC” are so old looking, and require a huge amount of reading from the user to understand all of its options that are thrown into the users laps, Don’t get me wrong, "UltraVNC" is a great program, and like many like it, gets the job done extremely well, The problem is, with programs like “TeamViewer” showing what can be done, and makes "UltraVNC" look obsolete, I feel like many does, that "RealVNC", and programs alike, really need to throw away there old thinking GUI concepts, and design a whole new GUI from scratch with streamline and efficiency being the prominent way of thinking, But concepts aside, "UltraVNC" get's the job done well, and for its use, then max score had to be given, but my advice, try "TeamViewer" 1st, if that doesn't do what your after, then and only then, try programs like "RealVNC" or "UltraVNC", |

It's nice. But if you want to use it over the Internet, for example: access computer at office from home, you may need a software like NeoRouter (www.neorouter.com). It helps you create a virtual LAN over the internet so that you can do anything just like in a LAN. |

Absolutely great for Vista, only mediocre for XP and older Microsoft OSs. There are odd configuration problems that pop up, performance isn't terrible, but also isn't as seamless as others, and the implementation of advanced features simply wasn't tested enough for them to have become default settings. However, they have the best standalone VNC viewer of all. If you're running XP or server 2003 (or older), stick with the TightVNC server and use the UltraVNC viewer. If you're on Vista, it's UltraVNC all the way. |

This is an outstanding tool with by far the best performance of any comparable tool (VNC, RealVNC, TightVNC etc.). In my experience it either works or doesn't depending on the graphics performance/support, but if it works there's nothing to touch it. I'm curious to know why anyone would prefer RealVNC -- unless using Adder hardware. |

Using uVNC 1.0.4 RC14 with RC14Bis = (Quick bug fix) on LAN and WAN to Remote Admin servers/networks all over the world. Yes it has bugs but most of them are the users cant fix those! one can but try. ;) As for all the other bugs they get addressed in due time as long as theire reported kinda properly, I reported a few and got them sorted with a couple of days. I would like to see a ANY of the BIG retail brands provide friendly and quick service like that!!!! The good the bad and the ugly wish they were ultravnc and base theire programs on this once I googled a bit this was what came up on top and not surprisingly so, since it has a good bunch of people behind it from the "joe" user to the admin/developer allways willing to help out anyone that comes over the http://forum.ultravnc.info/index.php I would give it a five but its missing a lot of refinements that Im sure we will all see realized. A shout out for the Crew - keep up the good work ;) |

I use it on an almost daily basis and it's great. The file transfer tool is pretty nice. I run it in "modem" speed since the quality is good enough and I get fast speed this way, but if you want speed and excellent quality, you can install the hook driver. |

One of the best FREE VNC remote control softwares out there. The last version gave me some issues with the video on connection (blank screen problem). I hope they have addressed this in this version. |

Don't get me wrong, this is my favorite VNC distribution, but it's not the best remote control solutions by a long shot. RemotelyAnywhere blows just about everything away, Dameware Mini-remote is pretty awesome for the price $89 for unlimited nodes. Remote Control Pro is stable, fast, free for personal use and has a better file manager. How long is it going to take for them to allow you to sort the columns in the file manager!!! Development for UltraVNC moves pretty slowly. |

Ultr@VNC slow ??? I've been using it for 2 years without a problem from 19kbit/s to 10Mbit/s connections. Without the Video Driver it's already faster than radmin (whatever the connection speed) and slightly slower than Remote Desktop over slow connections. With the Video Driver it's faster than ANYTHING else over a LAN (to my knowledge), and on-par with Remote Deskop over DSL connexions (using the "Modem" option), and for very low CPU load. I use both Ultr@VNC and RD on a daily basis at work, and I prefer Ultr@VNC. Furthermore it works from W9x to W2003... The connection can be encrypted using the encryption plugin. It has File Transfer, Chat, Toolbar, MS Logon, http/web browser connection using a JavaApplet viewer. It handles server screen resolution changes very well and has an AutoScaling which gives very good result for me (1600, 1280, 1024 resolutions). It also has a Server Scaling feature that can be used by PalmVNC2 client. Very handy. Looks like the upcoming RC19 version has Delta/Resume FileTransfer as well and even higher speed. I see no reason to pay for another product when I'm pretty sure to have the best available of its kind installed on my PCs, for free. Kudos to the developpers ! |

I have been using this version of VNC for about 2 years now. I think the problems with VNC is with it's open source nature and because of that each versions is dramatically different that the last. (1.) If you want security enable the "MS Logon" option. That way there is no password sent in clear text because it is connecting you to the remote machine and letting you use your credentials to login (this does not account for other OS's DSM is good for that). (2.) if performance is an issue scale back the resolution, set VNC to only send screen resolutions in 8 bit instead of what ever the remote client is using. That will cut down on the amout of date that is being exchanged between you and the client. (3.) performance is also measured by the speed of the remote client (Processor & Line). If you client is running a Celeron 400 over a 56K line....Pack A Lunch!!! |

I use this flavor of VNC to administer all of the machines on my local network. While I agree with the reviews before me that it is somewhat slower than some of its alternatives, I prefer the interface and functionality over Remote Desktop and Radmin. Neither of those are compatible with an operating system other than Windows. While UltraVNC itself is a Windows-only application, VNC as a whole can be run on many other operating systems. As for the encryption, you can easily encrypt the data by using the DSM plugins offered on the product's homepage. |

You really seem confused or u plainly don't knwo WTF are you talking about. Remote desktop in windows XP always blanks console screen when u take control remotely (what a great helpdesk alternative ¿uh?). Remote desktop does not allow file transfers (UVNC does), Remote desktop is not multiplatform, VNC can be encrypted via DSM plugins, Allows multiple clients (ideal for demonstrations) and if you think ultravnc is slow please use the video hook driver. |

As usual, free crap gets rave reviews. But I agree with roj: This is ssssssssssssssssssssssssslow junk. It's so slow that I can't even use it on my 11-mbps LAN. WinXP's Remote Desktop crushes it like a grape. It's also too stupid to account for resolution changes, and the scaling it tries to use in its place makes the screen unreadable. Throw in the fact that it's totally insecure (i.e. unencrypted) by default, and you have a pure digital turd. But oooooo... it's free, so I'll give it a 5? No way. |

Most VNC-derived packages are actually not bad now, for speed. I can easily connect to my home PC which is running at 1600x1200 and operate it relatively responsively from another system on a seperate, typical high speed connection. That's just with the default settings, more can be done to help this. It's free, so give it a try. It won't cost you anything but a few minutes to try it out. You may be surprised; there's no money at stake unless you go ahead and buy a product before testing the free alternatives. (of which there are many, tightvnc, etc) |

I've been using UltraVNC for about a year now. It is the fastest and most feature rich of all of the different VNC implementations. It is still slower than some of the commercial programs, but that gap is closing - especially with RC18. The file transfer is a little slow too, but very handy - as is the chat feature and selective window control. It is also 100% backwards compatible with the older (and much slower) VNC versions. If you are upgrading to RC18 from a previous RC, make sure you uninstall first - my server crashed due to the old display grabber driver. Bottom line: It's the best FREE remote control program out there. |

slow, Slow, SLOW. Yes it's free but in this case you definitely get what you pay for. Try Radmin for $25 instead - it's blows the doors off this package. |
