It seems to work as intended, it's fast, it's compact, and it's freeware. I encountered no problems with this version, nor with any of the previous versions I've used. |

Actually it's good until October 2007. 2006 can't be right! But if it encounters an error (I tried to access the Web site during scan . It is forever kaput. |

Does what it's supposed to do and does it well. I was reluctant to try it at first because previous reviewers had said it was shareware. It is in fact not shareware, it does have an expiration date but this expiration date is used to prevent you from using it beyond its useful period of time, when it cannot detect the latest threats. |

This is a useful anti-rootkit utility. Not the be-all-and-end-all, but useful, and easy to use for everyone. A word of advice for C4p0ne: If an insult truly is beneath your notice, the thing to do isn't to make some cute comment about it; you should simply ignore it. It doesn't make much sense to address an insult, and in the same breath, pretend you're not addressing it. |

Huh? It's not that complicated: it's a beta and it's free to use. There have been many iterations already, and if there's another, it also will be free. When/if it comes out of beta, it won't be. Rocket Science 101. |

This utility shouldn't be used beyond its expiration date any way. A new one will be available then and posted here. No "magic bullet" but darned handy to have on your memory stick along with Portable ClamAV when checking your email on aunt Bertha's "pooter" and you don't bring anything nasty home with you. |
| arossetti | Jul 11, 2006 | 2.2.1042 Beta | ![]() 3 out of 5 |
This is not freeware. It is a time limit demo. The software expires September 1, unless you pony up and throw some coin F-Secure's way. And it's serious coin. You won't be able to puchase it stand alone, you will only be able to get it as part of F-Secure's Internet Security 2006 package. List price $59.95. |

Hey C4p0ne, "because of what I call the "moron factor". AKA various levels of incompetance mixed with utter computer illiteracy to become pwn3d by something like that to begin with. " Moron factor? Spell "incompetence" for me, will you! ROFLMFHO!!! Much better to remain tightlipped and have people think you are a fool, than to speak up and remove all doubt. Please continue to scurry down the dark side of computing. You would only drag down the average if you came out into the grown up world. Thanks for the laugh! |

As for these utilities, good to have around if you're lazy. Otherwise, nothing special. Now on to some personal attacks that were made by some individuals here against me for no apparent reason. Let me just indicate how important (and rather useless) your comments are to me or anyone else for that matter on this entire board by simply pressing "submit review". |

99.9% of the time I read through the Beta announcements to be informed and aware of new products, and I have never had the urge to post a comment... until now. c4p0ne, "pwn3d" and "hx0ring"??? Go do something productive with your life. Get a girlfriend. Get involved in society. Do something. |

Oh, stop trying to sound like some badass h4x0r, c4p0ne. You don't impress me. I can detect anything you can come up with, by doing it offline. People who use rootkits--or any malware--for nefarious purposes are scumbags. <--- Note the period. |

IceSword Has been long beaten, and BlackLight never really held a candle IceSword so this new version doesn't really "excite" me. I guess it's good for casual hidden-shіt detection for noobs but common sense and a security/hx0ring background are really your best weapons against rootkits. And if you have neither of those you'll be pwn3d at some point. Don't cry about it, just accept that life under some circumstances and for some people just isn't "fair". So for noobsters you may as well just reformat, change all your passwords and pins and go back to living normal life after dealing with various forms of fraud that were commited using your personal credentials. |

Apparently, we have a weird kind of paradox goin' here because unfortunately, no tool of this or any other nature will protect you from "private" builds (versions) of popular rootkits. Case and point: hxdef (which i use with a great degree of satisfaction) "commercial private" versions that pretty much take a dump on stuff like BlackLight. Not to leave out over a dosen other rookit detectors that it easily defeats as well of course. Anyway, you'll never defeat a researched and well-written PRIVATE rootkit with a friggin PUBLIC detection utility. You'll have to go deep underground and "fight fire with fire" as they say by using rootkit and anomoly detection utilities that aren't in the "spotlight". Currently it's IceSword (apparently) that rootkits are having an impossible time hiding from. But again, by end of summer IceSword will be defeated as well... Wheres the paradox? It's that most average users of stuff like BlackLight can know that it wont help them against the above mentioned stuff, but still won't be able to do anything about it even if told "how" because of what I call the "moron factor". AKA various levels of incompetance mixed with utter computer illiteracy to become pwn3d by something like that to begin with. |

Wow, what a powerful, cutting criticism of me that was--even without any substantiation, wit, maturity, or point of any kind. Unfortunately for you, uberfly, my point stands. F-Secure BlackLight is designed to cater to novices, and that's fine. You better hope it works well enough if you're stupid or unfortunate enough to have a rootkit installed on your system. The bottom line is that if ANY rootkit detector finds a rootkit on your system, you should do a reformat and reinstall of Windows, unless an expert advises you on how to completely remove it. You cannot trust simple rename options in a rootkit detector. |

httpd.confused, you kinda seem like a real wanker. Anyways, another well written app by F-Secure. Works well. |
| httpd.confused | Apr 23, 2005 | 1.3.1015 Beta | ![]() 5 out of 5 |
There is such a lack of knowledge--and worse, total misconceptions--among users on how rootkits work, and how they are used. The comments below illustrate this. I haven't had F-Secure Blacklight detect anything on my system (of course), but it is certainly a very user-friendly approach to the problem. Remember to rename the F-Secure BlackLight EXE file before running it, and not to run it from a path with "F-Secure" and/or "BlackLight" in it. A pseudo-random EXE name is best. (For example, run it as C:\JhQIJPXzuO6TcSBW.exe.) |

Rootkit Revealer, IPD, BlackLight, flister, etc.. All wonderful tools. Of course, they will always be defeated and re-invented as is the "cycle of nature" in this realm. As we can see the more popular (and free) RootkitRevealer (below versions 1.31) was already being targeted/attacked in various ways (being defeated by various tweaked versions of hackerdefender). For the time being however, very powerful and worth having in one's reportoire. MUCH better than a "single-line" of puny AV defence! |
