Please note: The 2.1 development branch is classified "Alpha". The 2.0 development branch is the "Beta" and the 1.8 branch is the "stable". Separate pages should be made for 2.0 and 1.8.x. @sehnbadt: uTorrent and BitTorrent are not spying on you. Their partnerships with the corporations you mentioned involve software that has nothing to do with the uTorrent or BitTorrent clients. Please refrain from posting this unfounded FUD in the future. |

The .torrent protocol is just a peer-peer file-sharing language (& as such is it just ONE way of communication) and is freely available. It is found in software, hardware, & has been made to work on every platform. It has numerous clients or gui's which accomplish various implementations, some of which are open source. EVERY player in the IT industry is using it and .torrent files account for the MAJOR portion of all traffic (or used to). I don't blame ludvig one bit for cashing out. But I'm sure if he had held out longer he could have made much more. Besides it's not the pc I'm worried about, it's who I may, or may not be, directly connected to which ultimately carries the risk. If I was you I'd be more worried about that itunes crap u have running in the background |

Yeah, this is actually an alpha version, and they state that it's not yet feature complete. 2.0 is the beta 1.8.4 is the stable at the moment Betanews really needs to start separating these versions. It's just confusing. People will review the betas here and then a stable update will come out, and that will be reviewed, and then the beta version of 2.0 will be updated and that will be reviewed. And now the ALPHA version is being reviewed, all in the same space! It just doesn't work. Anyway, has anyone even tried the latest 2.0 betas? How are they coming along? The stable version's great as always. |

The finest torrent client. Nitpicks: Some of the defaults need work. The installer is overkill. (It merely copies the executable to the Program Files directory) The installer's "Run at Windows startup" and Ask toolbar AS DEFAULTS are very annoying. The default interface/icons could use work, too. (I recommend "µniversal" by savaden.) |

To Prospero424: I see your point, and partly agree with it. I may have been a bit drastic in my previous statements. However, you’re making it sound as if poor Ludvig Strigeus needs to bundle the Ask toolbar to feed his starving children (“These are hard times for code monkeys”), while the truth is that he sold uTorrent to BitTorrent Inc. a few years ago for an undisclosed amount. BitTorrent Inc. is a company which has received several millions of dollars in funding and appointed its first Chief Financial Officer less than a year ago. They’re not starving, they’re just cashing in on their investment, which is perfectly OK, but I resent their abusing the “freeware” label. This program is now an ad-supported freeware, which in my book is a type of adware, just like other fine programs like the ones you mentioned. I’d also like to point out that it’s not necessarily true that you’ll be stuck using second-class freeware should you shun this kind of programs. In some cases you’ll have no options, but in others there are first-class alternatives, for example: Virtual CloneDrive for Daemon Tools, PDF-XChange Viewer for Foxit Reader and XnView for Irfanview. Let me finish by saying that one of my favorite programs is the excellent and ad-supported Weather Watcher :) I don’t want to turn this into a debate about freeware-adware. Everybody’s points are very clear now and I won’t comment again here. I wish I could post without voting, but I can’t, so I’ll give the program five stars this time since it’s the closest to its current average. |

Dude, even the latest Java runtime installs a toolbar by default now. So does the Foxit PDF reader, IrfanView image viewer, Daemon Tools, and plenty of other programs at the top of their respective classes. These are hard times for code monkeys, and they need to scrape together cash any ethical way they can. As long as they make the option to refuse these options during installation prominent and clear, I have NO problem with this. And the optional Ask Toolbar is adware (or is it spyware?), NOT uTorrent. There is no reason to reclassify uTorrent as "adware" simply because the functionality of the software is completely unaffected by your choice of whether or not to install the toolbar. If you're going to rule out EVERY piece of software that optionally installs revenue-generating third-party software, you're either going to be stuck using second-class freeware or *GASP*, actually PAYING for your software! Even some really good open-source software is starting to bundle these days. Everybody's got their own preferences, and preferring an alternative to uTorrent or whatever is fine and dandy. But refusing to use perfectly good software JUST because it's got an optional bundle is just silly in this day and age. I tried this latest version briefly, had no problems, and went back to the stable release. Seems as efficient and speedy as ever. |

Ok, it seems that some people didn't understand my comments, so I'll be even clearer. I don't care if the toolbar is downloaded together with the uTorrent installer or afterwards. What I care about is whether it's offered to be installed BY DEFAULT or not. That is to say, if you accept all default options in the uTorrent installer, you end up with an unneeded and unwanted advertising toolbar in your browser. Not nice. And OF COURSE you can choose NOT to install it, but that's not the point. The point is -again- that the DEFAULT option is to install it, i.e. the boxes are "checked", not "unchecked". The funniest part is that another program that bundles this same advertising toolbar, Comodo Internet Security, actually detects the Ask toolbar as "Unclassified malware" ... Talk about irony! :D Take a look: http://www.calendarofupd...p;type=post&id=6114 Back to the uTorrent installation, I don't worry about myself because I know very well how to avoid that stuff (I'm really tired of having to choose "custom install" in every single program I install, but I know what a mistake it'd be not to do so), however we all know that the average user isn't always so heedful. Besides, it's obvious that Ask pays uTorrent for every toolbar install. Why do you think they do that? Think about it, it's very clear |

UTORRENT dosen't include toolbar! If it would include then it wouldn't fit in the 300kb microtorrent setup! ASK Toolbar is downloaded separately when user doesn't read carefully. *ASK Toolbar is meant for more income when people don't got any other way to donate* |

Softpedia is bulls***. The toolbar is optional, and is easily ignored by people paying attention to the install process. If you are NOT paying attention, or do not know how avoid installing optional components that are not required to complete installation, you might want to learn a bit more about such things before using a peer-to-peer file distribution application. |
| Second Shadow | Jun 3, 2009 | 1.8.3 Build 15571 Beta | ![]() 3 out of 5 |
This (formerly very fine) program is ADWARE now, has everyone noticed? They have every right to turn it into adware, but it should be disclosed more prominently, and it should be recategorized here on FileForum, as Softpedia did. From the uTorrent Softpedia page: "Reasons why this program is marked as adware: · Contains third-party services unrelated to the program's functionality, intended to generate income" Take a look: http://www.softpedia.com...-Sharing/uTorrent.shtml I'll keep using the last freeware version (1.8.1) and then I'll probably move on to Bitspirit. Pity. Rating: 5 stars for features and performance, 3 stars for being adware, 1 star for miscategorizing it as freeware. Average: 3 stars |

OK, I admit it. I switched from Vuze to µTorrent. I was on the fence and hated giving Vuze up, but I don't see its shortcomings EVER being corrected. Oh well. µTorrent has come a long way since I first tried it. Back then, it was a good-running client, but was short on features. I've almost become a uTorrent convert. There are still some things I prefer about Vuze, and some things that are easier (or only possible) with Vuze (e.g. automatically having certain torrents stop once complete, automatically saving torrents of a certain label in desired folders, not needing to keep all the .torrent files to seed, being able to prioritize the download of certain file extensions, etc.). But Vuze's startup and shutdown times--which are measured in eons--annoy the hell out of me. And (Vuze) using well over 100 MB is pretty ridiculous as well. Edit: Bah... After a week of using uTorrent, I'm going back to Vuze. There's just no comparison in terms of power. Vuze is a hog but it makes it so much easier to handle my files. In Vuze, I can simply assign a category, and have files saved where I want, and control how they are seeded. I can share a file between Vuze and PeerGuardian, wheras uTorrent has only a lame IP filter implementation. And Vuze lets me use the automatic upload speed feature when I'm downloading, but not seeding, whereas uTorrent keeps it on all the time. And so on, and on... No comparison. I'll deal with the annoying startup/shutdown times. |

uTorrent is as it is written up to be. Lightweight on system resources BUT the biggest complaint I have is the following: When in the taskbar of Windows Vista, it tends to stay there and neither left nor right mouse click(s) can get it begone, not even the Task Manager fully does this. Although it seems UTorrent is gone, in fact, according to Vista, uTorrent still runs and a "new" start is non comprende. This occurs when (other than security software) only uTorrent is running or another instance of a program of varying size is running as well. Other than that, you will find that you can selectively choose which files within files you want, you can pick and choose. You can read easily just what is coming "in the pipeline". The interface is self explanatory and the author has really left nothing out. It is not a resource hog at all. Yet again, the inability to shut down uTorrent simply by right clicking (at random this happens) is frustrating, requiring a reboot if you truly seek to utilize uTorrent as the author perhaps intends. -W. Doesn't work with Vista SP2 beta. But I use Usenext anyways. Way better than torrents and download at true speeds if you pay extra. If I have to torrent I use Bitcommet. Fast. |

if the paranoid claims about utorrent were true, would have already been proven for some time, we have security specialists and anyone has access to programs such as Wireshark to analyze traffic ... utorrent is the best torrent program simply because it is lightweight and practical, I see no need to be charging a Java virtual machine just to download torrents, Vuze is very slow and worse - still has not some functions of utorrent, for example, utorrent rename the extensions of the incomplete files to .! ut, Vuze don't! LOL JAVA |

@ bigmama - remember its ALPHA version only dedicated for TESTERS... and Vuze (old Azureus) is too slow and too memory eating because based on Java... whats I need is fast download and lightweight application uTorrent is answer for this ;) |

While uTorrent is by far my preferred torrent client, I have to give this build a low score. As soon as I installed it, I ran into issues where my torrents would quickly run up to about 20% of my bandwidth, then drop all the way down to 5-12 kBps and stay there. It also made my browser and computer completely non-responsive, most likely due to the debug code mentioned before. I reinstalled the 1.8.1 release, and was instantly back up to my normal transfer speeds. |

Did I hit a nerve Pfurri? Rather than being a gay little fanboy maybe you should admit the faults of programs rather than kissing its a** so blindly. Yes the STABLE version is the best torrent client out there but these are, I repeat, NOT FOR GENERAL USE. Maybe if you actually followed the progress on the forums you would quit trolling and make a relevant comment. |

The CPU usage isn't because it's alpha, it's because some stupid moron is uploading debug builds that are supposed to be used only for a few minutes at most, and only by users that were asked to run them by the developers, because they contain code that logs detailed info about each and every packed sent or received by utorrent. You don't have to be a genius to figure out this will completely kill your processor no matter how powerfull it is. To top it, at the end of the download, the log files will be probably bigger than the files you downloaded. |

Still the BEST torrent client ! Recommended by all the best Private trackers I use...with Azureus which I think is a second choice for persons who don't use lot of optionnal settings like me. Stop reviewing this version for its bad things as it's an alpha release...There's a forum to post these types of commentaries. I personnally wait for a beta version to start testing it really. The third choice is Deluge and then BitSpirit but not allowed on all the trackers. |

Bittorrent devs on UDP transfers causing the sky to fall: "The article in the Register is utter nonsense - it completely mischaracterizes what we're trying to do with uTP (we're trying to roll out a protocol that is latency sensitive/performance neutral, NOT a greedy one that kills the internet). The key ideas in his article are: (1) that we implemented uTP purely to evade Bell Canada and Comcast throttling (2) we use raw UDP and didn't bother to implement any congestion control mechanism. Both of these are completely untrue." "In general uTP is designed to detect congestion and throttle back send rates as soon as congestion is spotted. It can do this as it continuously monitors the time it takes for a packet to be sent from one of our peers to another one of our peers. If the time taken for a packet to arrive starts to degrade we will infer that there may be congestion about to happen. It will throttle back accordingly. This contrasts with TCP which has a congestion control method that relies entirely on detecting packet loss before inferring that congestion may be occurring - this is ok, but by definition the problem has already happened at this point and will probably be spotted by the end user." "The point of uTP is to make BitTorrent protocol efficiently use available bandwidth if and only if other applications are not competing for the same bandwidth. Protocols that do not implement this will continue to send regardless (e.g. in the case of TCP until packet loss occurs). - this isn't going to solve all the problems on the internet, but it will make sure that congestion impacts to the end user experience will not be caused by our clients." This FUD about uTP is being spread by The Register in their usual scruple-deficient grubbing for page hits and by the author of the article, who is a well-known anti-network-neutrality and anti-P2P ideologue. Keep these obvious agendas in mind when sifting through their various scare tactics. |

To be fair I just tried Vuze. It torrented OK but there's so much stuff going on, I felt I was in an expensive luxury store and I couldn't buy something basic like a pair of jeans which is all I wanted. I hear that the add-ons are appreciated by some. But I really can't think of anything I'd like to add on! uTorrent lets me download when, how and where I like. Its (super)light, configurable, gives me great info on what's going on - and I don't have to learn anything and it stays right out of the way. One of the lightest and most essential apps on my set-up (and on my Linux set-up too [under Wine]). |

Solid. Configurable. Stable. I've been running uTorrent for years. It had issues a long time ago but I haven't seen a hint of a glitch in over a year. I run uTorrent on BOTH Vista 32-bit and XP 32-bit. Summary: uTorrent is one of those programs that does exactly what I need with little need for improvement. *Having said this, I've observed slow-downs when running IE, Firefox or Chrome. I can't penalize uTorrent because I don't know where the "fault" lies. There does need to be a way to throttle priority towards the browsers. If you observe web slow-downs, CLOSE uTorrent and see what happens. |

It's been a while, so I tried it, and still prefer the last "True" version (v1.6 build 474) over this one. That said, since I don't feel comfortable recommending this product, I steer people to BitSpirit instead. I just think it's a better product overall. uTorrent hasn't really been uTorrent since it was sold off to that RIAA/MPAA loving dude. Kind of like how SharkyExtreme wasn't really SharkyExtreme after Sharky left the site. If this product was offered as Open Source, and people could scrutinize the code while continuing to improve the product, I think I might be willing to give that a shot as my everyday BT app. But as it sits now, v1.6 build 474 is as far as I'm willing to go. |

1. The Port forwarding configuration and speed settings ARE automatic. uTorrent supports uPnP auto-configuration like most other modern clients. It also has automated speed guides for adjusting connection settings and built-in methods for testing connectivity. I dont' see how it could be easier, and it's CERTAINLY just as easy as any other major client out there, and anyone telling you differently has no idea what they're talking about. 2. The third-party search options are still present in the stable release. They just aren't in the betas. I'm looking at them right now. That would suck if they removed them from the next stable release, though, even if I don't use the search at all myself. 3. Low resource usage may not be important to SOME people, but it is important to many, many others. Nothing anyone can say will alter this fact. One can dismiss it, but one can't credibly claim it's some sort of negative. 4. I have never seen a comprehensive comparison of clients show that the newer versions of uTorrent are slower. In fact, it has more ways to reach out and find peers than some other popular clients, which would make it faster in theory. Make all the claims about the speed tests you like, but you know as well as I that they were highly subjective. Others aren't seeing the same results. I, for example, routinely start a torrent only to have it immediately jump up to 1.5 megaBYTES per second (peak of my bandwidth). That's not slow, and that's not "crap" performance. As with any other piece of software, your mileage may vary. Just don't speak as if your perfunctory speed comparisons and performance evaluations are the end-all-be-all and that it can't possibly be that it just seems slower to YOU, because that's far more likely than not. Deluge is great, and I've said as much with glowing praise in my reviews of it. But it's still relatively unstable for a LOT of people (but not everyone) under Windows, and it's still missing a few features (like super seeding). It's good now, and it's got fantastic potential. But uTorrent is here now. It's stable, it's fast, it's feature-rich, and it's more efficient than any other Windows client. |

I appreciate the detailed response from Prospero424 highlighting various aspects sensibly. However, I am sure what I am talking about. Unfortunately, most of the users assume that the resources they are enjoying and the environment they are working are GLOBAL and rest all users are sharing the same which is not the case. I must mention that the users in USA and Europe might not even have an idea how several countries have system of working there. I am from Pakistan and working in Saudi Arabia and both the working environments are entirely different. The existence and limitations of Firewalls and available ISP restrictions control the scene. And obviously due to that the outcome will be accordingly. When users face any problem, they report here intending the improvement of the software. If you are a regular reader of the threads you must have noticed that previously at least 30% public was reporting bugs faced in their environment so the developer get aware of these bugs while considering the next beta release. Instead of the developer, too many software fans start crying on that user with all personal comments as if they are the developer. Quite an immature behaviour. This is the main reason that several serious users have stopped reporting bugs as they don’t want to be part of this non-sense. It is an open forum. Your admiration and loyalty to the software and developer will not benefit him except moralizing him. Rather the negative comments of the users will help him considering those points while developing further. Every program has its own positive and negative features. I have used uTorrent and Deluge in identical cases and have found that Deluge handles that job which has not been taken care properly by uTorrent. When you are behind a Firewall or avail a shared IP and using a Router then you sometime cannot configure a fixed IP as explained in FAQs because of too many parameters. And due to this the port will not be forwarded properly which in turn will reduce your download speed to sometime 2 kbps. A very strange behaviour of uTorrent in this case is that even it is showing no incoming connections but uploading with the maximum speed which doesn’t make sense. I start uTorrent it starts with peak speed but gradually fall down to minimum whereas uploading will be going with full speed. If I leave it like that it will keep uploading and the upload / download ratio will become 3.5 or such. Whereas this behaviour is not faced in Deluge. If it is a local problem then why not faced while using other programs? This is not only my experience several of my friends faced the same problem with all possible configurations. May be this is not the case faced by you so don’t report it but let people report what they are facing. Lastly, if some one could not locate some excellent built-in features of the program, it is considered to be the fault of developer who has not considered designing and furnishing it in a user-friendly manner. As per my suggestion instead of developing further he should focus on removing these bugs and develop a feature which could optionally configure the port forwarding and other such key features so as to attain perfection. I would rather prefer to pay some amount monthly to become a premium subscriber instead of wasting time in uploading for downloading. |

Undesired Username: All a theoretical RIAA watchdog needs is your IP address and the time. With this information, they can and will get your identification from your ISP unless you're using a series of anonymous proxy servers (which slows transfers down immensely). 99% of people out there don't even know what that is. Even if your IP is dynamic, the lease and the duration are logged by your ISP, and they WILL release it upon subpoena, or perhaps even simple request. I like Vuze. I used Azureus for years and years, and the plugin ability is fantastic. I just came to the conclusion that all of the functionality I need is contained in uTorrent, it's a bit more efficient, and I like the interface a bit better. To conclude on the RIAA thing: the effort required for a dedicated commercial "watchdog" (hired by the RIAA/MPAA/ESA, etc.) to passively and actively (posting fake torrents, etc.) collect the IPs of pirates not using expensive and/or cumbersome obfuscation methods is trivial no matter how you cut it and no matter what Bittorrent client you're using. |

No, anomoly (who can't even figure out how to download the MP3 plugin for InfraRecorder), Vuze is the world's most-configurable, flexible, and extensible BitTorrent client, and it runs great on systems made after 1996. @Prospero424: I take your point regarding the RIAA, but that's not what I was addressing. I was responding to the idea that literally any peer could know who "you" were, as in "able to personally identify you and track your activity over a period of time". I am not aware of the accusations made against uTorrent with regard to the RIAA, so I guess my point (even if correct) was off target. In any case, there is still a difference between knowing a WAN IP (which could represent more than one machine), and uTorrent being tied to one specific machine over time. |

RE: "ANYONE CONNECTED TO THE SAME TRACKER AS YOU CAN SEE WHAT YOU'RE DOWNLOADING NO MATTER WHAT CLIENT YOU USE." Well, it depends on who or what "YOU" is. Who are "you" to peers? Peers can see your IP address, but what if that IP is dynamic? What if you're on a LAN with 5 or 500 other machines? Who are "you" to them? Now, if uTorrent were to use a GUID that identified your client, even when your IP changed... Then "you" takes on a whole new meaning to anyone who can associate that GUID with your various IP address(es). I use Vuze, so I don't really care either way. |

I swear to God, this is the last time I'm going to say this to you "OMG, uTorrent watches what you're transferring" idiots: ANYONE CONNECTED TO THE SAME TRACKER AS YOU CAN SEE WHAT YOU'RE DOWNLOADING NO MATTER WHAT CLIENT YOU USE. And even if there isn't anyone connected to the tracker you have to worry about, your ISP can still see what you're doing unless you're encrypted from end to end, which almost no one using Bittorrent is doing because it's really slow and/or requires a paid encryption service. Don't believe me? Do me a favor: go to the "peers" tab on whatever Bittorrent client you're currently using. See that list of IP addresses of people transferring that same file you are? Now think about that REAL hard. We'll wait. Why in the heck would the MPAA or the RIAA or whoever need to make some deal with uTorrent when all they have to do to collect IPs of people downloading certain files is connect to that same tracker? These STUPID conspiracy theories don't even make basic sense. uTorrent is the best Windows Bittorrent client out there, especially for those looking to keep resource usage low for whatever reason. It's tiny, it's fast, and it's more full-featured than any other client besides Azureus. The RSS feature works great for automating your downloads, some of the newer NAT traversal features are a big help to those who aren't savvy enough to configure their own router, and things like magnet link (URI) capability are slowly making the need to actually download the .torrent file first obsolete. The people still spreading the FUD about uTorrent are invariably either warez kiddies who are too ignorant of the internet they love to know any better or are deliberately lying about it because they're pissed that a lot of trackers are banning the old versions of uTorrent that they've hacked so they can leech and not give anything back. |

@Viciously Cold: I'm on a 30/20gbit direct cable connection. I use only public trackers and I don't encrypt the connection. I download 30 to 50 gigabytes a month and seed back appr0x 5-10 times more. I'm doing this using only uTorrent and the best part is, that I don't have to move a finger, uTorrent does it for me automatically via RSS. Oh, I forgot I have fixed IP. :-))) So dude, think about it. Either you're a sad schizophrenic monkey, or simply a troll. If what you're saying were true, a commando would be right outside my door. Better go check it, eh? uTorrent is the best client. |

only noobs and those who like being monitored use uTorrent anymore. BitTorrent owns uTorrent now and everyone knows BitTorrent monitors their own software so they can report people. Why do you think BitTorrent is so unwilling to tell everyone how they catch people? Because their doing it illegally. They use their own software to monitor those who use it then turn in the ip addresses. all i can say is you best make sure whatever you download is 100% legal and no doubts because if not those uTorrent lovers ip addresses will be turned in. BitTorrent and uTorrent both should be labeled as adware for monitoring user activity. |

| MarcFou | Aug 14, 2008 | 1.8 Build 11813 | ![]() 5 out of 5 |
I have to confirm what borisf98 said. When upload rate is set to 5kb or lower, your download speed gets throttled. Uploading is what makes downloading work. If everyone set low or near nothing uplod speed, it would take forever to download something. So I agree with the penalty. Besides. Many P2P apps have been doing this for the longest time. Not a new concept. Overall uTorrent proves to be the best client out there. I recently began using the RSS feature and love it. |

Best torrent client, it even got the Tetris game! About the download throttling: If everyone sets the upload to 0 and download to unlimeted we would end with 0 in download as well, so by forcing people share at least something (like 5Kb/sek) is GOOD. |

Been using Azureus but finally decided to try this. Wow what a difference in memory usage. About one tenth of Azureus. I only have one complaint. The font size is minuscule. Either increase it or add an option so the user can increase the size. Those that have perfect vision won't have it for long if they have to keep reading the font size in this program. Those that don't have perfect vision will need a magnifying glass to read it. Other than this cosmetic issue the program is great. Correct the font issue and I will rate it a 5. |

Hadding dificulty with uTorrent cause it was constancily losing contact with the private tracker (green turns into red), after doiing some googlehomework I found the solution. Put the maximum connections back to 50 , that is a good balance between stable contact with trackers and having enough sources. At first it was losing contact every few hours and that was not helping my ratio, no contact with tracker means no boost of ratio. Now it didn't happened once, only when the tracker stopped supporting the specific torrent! Keep in mind that private trackers more and more stopped supporting uTorrent lower then 1.77 and advices you to use Azureus, but uTorrent works fine for me now. Also for all bittorrentappz counts that you have to be aware not to use the blocked ports and use a port that is OPEN and PERMITTED to be connectable with the private tracker! (allways read the rules of your private tracker forum) |

utorrent is my torrent program of choice. everything else includes too many features that i don't use or have much use for or slow my system down because of all its uses. i among several thousands of others refused to use utorrent when it was bought out by bittorrent. i did not upgrade for the reasons given here, that they could now track users better because they now had direct access to the code. and so i stayed with the 1.6 beta. i always read the reviews here to see what was going on with it, but i never upgraded. some time later, my dad got into torrents, so i directed him to utorrent. as a test case, i had him get the latest version at the time, 1.7x beta. and guess what, nothing happened. no c&d letters, no messages from our isp, nothing. i didn't upgrade then. it was only after reading more reviews on the 1.8 version that i finally decided to upgrade. other than the install package (that i downloaded from utorrent's website) that i did not like, and the overall revised look that i don't like, i don't see any real difference between what i was using and what i have now. back then i found that there was nothing wrong with it and it did as advertised. i still find that still applies. it's still a 5 star program. i do still have 1.6.1 beta, and i'm probably always going to use that until there is some technical reason why i can't because i find that sometimes it works better than the current version and i like the look of it. |

Whenever I get a lot of emails on one subject, it inevitably means something surprisingly great or incredibly, tragically awful has happened. So when emails regarding a Donnie Darko sequel started rushing in, I assumed it was the prior: eager fans of the cult film alerting me to how excited I should be that Richard Kelly was returning to his single hit rather than attempting further Southland Tales. But as I looked closer at the emails, a sadder, angrier tone emerged. The subject wasn't "Donnie Darko 2!!!!", it was "Donnie Darko 2????" Another read, "Positive outcome unlikely." What the hey? If college taught me anything, it's that everyone but me in college loved Donnie Darko, or at least pretended to so they wouldn't be accused of "not getting it." Surely there must be a reason for this sudden backlash against a sequel. Hmm, let's take a look. It's called S. Darko, and it's about Donnie's sister. That makes sense, given that Donnie dies. They got the same actress to return to the role--always a good sign. Should be fine as long as they get a strong supporting cast like... a guy from Gossip Girl, someone from Step Up 2 the Streets, and the tall-haired fellow from Dragonball? All right, I guess that works, if Richard Kelly thinks he can pull it off with... Oh, Kelly isn't involved in any capacity? Well, so long as someone else with a similarly unique vision takes over, like... Chris Fisher, director of Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders and an episode of NBC's Chuck? OK. This is doomed. |

DudeBoyz: As far as the file size increase, there were FORTY features added just going from version 1.7 to 1.7.7. These aren't bugfixes, they're new features in the code like local peer discovery, support for SSL-encrypted RSS feeds, NAT-PMP support, auto upload throttling, and LOTS of code for proper interaction with Vista (1.6 has problems with Vista). These features I just listed were all added in just the first build of 1.7. Much has been added between that and 1.7.7, as well. And then there's all of the new features of 1.8 (some of which I list below). The bottom line is that significant features have been added that explain the size difference perfectly reasonably. Here's a link to the 1.7.x-series changelog: http://download.utorrent....7.7/utorrent-1.7.7.txt and here's a changelog for the 1.8 alpha/beta series: http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=31998 Pay special attention to the lines beginning with "Feature:". Original post: Really? These other clients are not better than 1.6 but they are better than 1.7-1.8? How? I want you to tell me how, specifically, 1.6 is "better" and why these later version are worse without resorting to unfounded conspiracy theories. I also want specific details of how this project has gone "downhill". Tell me the numbers and how you've benchmarked the different versions. Go ahead. And then you can explain how a 250KB app can be considered "bloated" in friggin' 2008! Sorry if I seem snarky, it's just that every single person I've seen making these claims of 1.6 being faster, to a ONE, has been lying their butts off. 90% of them haven't even TRIED the new versions, yet claim to have "solid results" that their preferred version is faster. So if you have evidence that these new versions are somehow worse, please present it. FYI, nobody anywhere on the internet I'm aware of (and I've looked, believe me) has yet been able to do this. When they're pressed, they just start stammering about the RIAA or something and hope we'll forget their claims of the new versions being "crippled" or whatever. Also, where are you people getting the old versions? You are aware that the source code is not being released for these and you have no idea if the third parties distributing them have modified them OR their installers, aren't you? You'd better hope they're not slapping 0-day exploits into them, 'cause your antivir most likely won't catch something like that. Be careful, and always know exactly who you're getting your executables from. As far as my own experience, I've found the later versions (1.7.X) to be every bit as fast as the older ones were, sometimes more so due to better DHT bootstrapping giving me more peers to attempt connections to. The 1.8 beta is looking very good, and is quite usable. New features include peer exchange and local peer discovery through DHT, which is a great improvement. Also supported in 1.8 is something I've been waiting for from uTorrent since version 1.5: magnet link (URI) support so you don't even have to download any .torrent files! (adapted from the implementation in Azureus) 1.8 has been in development for way too long, but I'm sure it'll be great when it's finally released! |

UPDATE for Prospero424: You can get the older versions at File Hippo: http://www.filehippo.com/download_utorrent/ Just so you know, I was very actively involved with Utorrent testing and usage, to the point where Firon and the programmer were getting darn tired of my constant comments. I personally have v1.6 build 474 because I was using Utorrent long before that release and I still have it archived and backed up. :) I didn't specifically say 1.6 was physically faster, but did say it was more efficient. Explain to me what has been added to Utorrent since v1.6 build 474 that would account for the large percentage increase in file size. Yeah, a 264k app may not seem big, but this is Utorrent we are talking about and the last official version before the sale is only 174k. Don't you wonder what they've put in the code that accounts for that huge percentage increase in file size? ORIGINAL POST: Still prefer the last TRUE Utorrent client v1.6 build 474 to this app, and find both Azureus and Bit Spirit to be better than any Utorrent build later than 474. The app has really gone downhill since the original programmer / creator stopped doing all the programming. When he was the only one that touched the code, the app seemed to get better and better with each release. Selfishly, as a fan of his work, I really wish he hadn't sold it. v1.6 Build 474 = 174,163 bytes v1.8 Beta 9599 = 264,496 bytes Don't need all that bloat on what used to be one hyper-efficient client. |

µTorrent keeps getting better. The 1.8 beta 1 build 8912 is the result of a 4 month public alpha testing. It includes everything you expect from uT (being small, and feature-filled) and even has some added goodies due to request. These include: magnet support, queue thresholds for fully utilizing your connection, and a clean-up of the interface allowing RSS and torrents in the same listview. No uT does not include all the features of the plugin-based Azureus (Does uT support plugins... but the WebUI API is so versatile you don't need to be at your computer or even have the main GUI opened to manipulate torrents) however nothing which adds utility is really lacking. |

Saying "most" torrent sites have these newer uTorrent versions banned is either a bald-faced lie or a product of unforgivable ignorance. Every single major public tracker I'm aware of allows these later versions of uTorrent and the majority of these tend to be populated mostly BY the later versions of uTorrent. Then there's private trackers, which can be a bit more murky. However, ALL of the best, largest private trackers (like HDBits) allow the latest versions of uTorrent and, ironically, have actually banned OLDER versions of uTorrent because: 1. The older versions have a major remote crash exploit vulnerability that's been fixed in 1.7.7 2. The older versions (mostly 1.5 and 1.6) have been modified by l33t hax0rz into lame-ass, compromised packages traded around on warez sites with little to no code scrutiny where they are used to send false information to trackers in an effort to cheat and get faster download speed, thus slowing down everyone else in the swarms they're used in. 3. THESE are far, far more suspect than the latest official versions are as far as malware. There is no evidence whatsoever that uTorrent is sending uniquely identifiable data to any organization, especially not the RIAA. The kiddies keep making these claims, but have so far presented absolutely NO evidence supporting their conspiracy theories, and are most likely complaining because they LIKE using their cheater leech software to the detriment of others and are pissy because the modified versions are being banned. Honestly, guys, it's time to put this BS to bed. It's gotten really, really tiresome and you're just embarrassing yourselves. These alpha versions are fairly mature (for alphas) and pretty darned quick. Of course, they better be considering how long 1.8 has been in development. Hopefully not much farther to go to final release! |

Best BitTorrent client available. There are a few bugs, since this is an alpha, but things seem to be shaping up nicely. As for those who complain that there is a back door in the program (this is false!), the only thing the program does is check for updates - if you have that option enabled. I've logged and gone through all my uTorrent firewall packets for over a week. This is a safe program and is does a very good job. |

I agree with Matt Lee about Deluge which is one of the best torrent client. Halite is at his beggining and remember me the birth of µtorrent. BUT don't review µtorrent because for you this one or this one is better. µTorrent is actually the best because of its features and still sooooo light...When the FBI will come to my house then maybe I will change my mind about this software. I love this application, I always rated it 5 but these latest alphas are a mess. Reasons: - the delay after the torrent is completed and passing in seeding - in latest alpha/beta 7435: utorrent takes a really long time for the client to begin uploading to other peers. - and finally stop adding new features and solve the current bugs * one star from me. |

Excellent program as always but i don't see the point of it anymore. Since the scare of RIAA involvement since v1.7, most torrents actively refuse any version of µTorrent these days making it completely useless. What's the point of having a torrent client who can't download at least 50% of the torrents out there? I've tried every torrent program there is and the best one at the moment in my opinion is now BitSpirit as it has the ability to choose what files you want to download within a torrent and i could never find a way of Azureus to do this. Not to mention BitSpirit has a far lower footprint then Azureus. Azureus still wins on being the fastest client but BitSpirit is very close now so i can forgive slightly slower speeds for flexibility and greater control over my downloads. |

>Oh & halite works flawlessly with upload limits (per torrent)-better than utorrent as u can set ANY limit maybe I dont get your point, but my versions of utorrent hide options from the menu, untill you select e.g the smalest one, then even smaller options will be available and steps inbetween get smaller.... so you have: 1 2 3 4 5 10 15 20 25 .... menus are a pain... so just use the properties dialog where u enter numbers. I wish I could say I wasn't one of the paranoids, but for some reason i stay with an older version. :( |

I'm having NO ISSUES. I've extensively reviewed this and other products and have so for several years. I can find no good reason to use another product, nor do I find any evidence of spyware, malware or any changes to my average download speeds. (Perhaps the problem lies somewhere else?) Excellent. |

fast effecient and great at what it does. very very small memory footprint. Absolutely no spyware bundled at all christ999 what you drinking can I have some for xmas. one of the better if not one of the best bittorrent programs. Unless your christ999 who doesnt use it at all now. |
| anomoly | Dec 20, 2007 | 1.8 Build 7237 Alpha | ![]() 4 out of 5 |
It starts faster than halite in all respects. It has local peer discovery which is a boon to torrenting in general. Halite needs to run a couple times b4 it remembers to use the dat file. And halite has no local peer discovery, (other than dht which is not allowed on private trackers) & this somewhat cripples it's seeding, especially if u use forced incoming encryption on a completed torrent. Still I will keep using halite until it fails. I DO like the fact it shuts down cleanly. If you keep a ratio I believe this is handy. Oh & halite works flawlessly with upload limits (per torrent)-better than utorrent as u can set ANY limit. Not much to say about microtorrent other than it has too many updates & quite possibly anything that so many use SHOULD be OS. |

Don't use this spyware application. Also after the buyout, this program is full of bugs, and transfers speed sucks. Try the safe and OPEN SOURCE Azureus (or Haalite as an alternative) |
| dhry | Dec 17, 2007 | 1.8 Build 7041 Alpha | ![]() 5 out of 5 |
To anomoly: hats off to the guy who is programming Halite for writing it in assembler, but it has a LONG way to go before it's even close to being competition for uTorrent. Halite has some real annoying bugs, not the least of which is the ridiculous delay when you try to close the program. Plus entering the max upload speed on the main window doesn't modify the max upload speed! Back to uTorrent. However, the latter is starting to get REAL bloated. uTorrent's author should have quit adding features months and months ago - it was good enough then and now it's just starting to become a resource hog (comparatively speaking). Any more bloated crap and my review drops to a 4. |

Downloaded, Used, nothing wrong found. As of reading all the other posts, it seems you all call this "spyware" and that everything that is done is tracked, I fail to see anything on monitoring the program and even looking into the code itself. |
| anomoly | Dec 13, 2007 | 1.8 Build 7022 Alpha | ![]() 4 out of 5 |
If you notice it is Bittorent ,Inc. If I made this code work of art I'd have incorporated as well. Smartest move to be made for a company. As far as spying and what not, I highly doubt that if it did it could get away with it for very long without some paranoid torrent snooper finding out. I'm STILL going to switch to halite when it has the basics of utorrent correct. Plus Halite can be controlled from a web-enabled phone which is where all phones are going anyway. Hell with it. I switched. unless I have specific tracker probs or am not 'connectable' I'll just keep using Halite. At least it doesn't have this 'need' to basically call home for updates and what not. And halite will encrypt not just outgoing but incoming as well. |

No spyware that we know of...considering all the amounts of data sent to how many different ip's it'd be kind of hard to figure out if it was. Ever since they sold out I don't trust them anymore, neither do a lot of people, and I'm fairly convinced that as soon as theres an alternative that isn't extreme bloat/adware(bitcomet) or just extremely slow and crappy (azur...the frog, I can't ever spell it right) then utorrent will loose most the remaining people who are crossing their fingers hoping all their torrent activity isn't being sold to RIAA/MPAA or some advertising company. I give it a 3 because its still one of the lightest, and most stable torrent programs out there, and because there's a small *chance* this isn't spyware. It really needs its source opened if the creators want its customers to stop dropping, and have any hope of regaining the popularity it once had. |

echohead, uTorrent is lighter than Halite, anyone, nowadays that difference is not significant. IMHO uTorrent is the best Torrent client, unless tou prefer it to be open source, in that case, Halite is the choice. Also remember that if you want an integrated one, since version 9, Opera supports Torrent downloads. |

http://www.fbmsoftware.c...et/application/uTorrent/ BAM, nothing wrong with it. No spyware or anything. http://www.binarynotions.com/halite.php ^Halite, my client of choice. even lighter on resources than utorrent, and open-source. something i noticed the other day though: if utorrent, now owned and maintained by bittorrent inc., really does contain spyware, why is is that the official bittorrent client is left open-source? i gave it a 3 because the developers should stop adding features and focus solely on bugfixes. |

very awesome; much improvement. Hey good sir's complaining.. Show me proof.. use a port sniffer and run only utorrent, and tell me what computers it connects to everytime, seeing as it would have to dial home if it was comprimised, otherwise the IP's cant be collected... This program is the clean version of BitTorrent to be honest.. my proof.. if it wasnt they wouldnt be developing BOTH at the same time.... this is the clean one, bittorrent is the mass scale dirty one.. same exe, with bittorrent adding DNA But seriously you paranoid person.. uTorrent has always been my BitTorrent client of choice. It is silly to assume that this program is suddenly compromised, just because the new development team has a business connection to companies trying to promote the legal uses of BitTorrent. Since neither we, nor anyone else, has seen the source code, there is no reason to assume something bad is happening. If you're so suspicious, why don't you do a little packet sniffing and find out the truth for yourself? Until then, how about keeping the conspiracy theories to yourself? |

I think the previous poster means "anti-piracy". In any event, he is completely wrong. The claims that µTorrent reports your activities are completely _wrong_. Most likely, it's the users' ISPs that are reporting them. This program does what it is meant to do very well. |
| XZAVER | Dec 3, 2007 | 1.8 Build 6723 Alpha | ![]() 1 out of 5 |
Zarggg: It has nothing to do with piracy or anti-piracy , the share fact that the owners have changed to the giant machine that is now managing this program is good enough for me to stay the hell away , until its dissected & until I am 100% fully satisfied this program doesn't send ANY data other than the data i'm intending it to download. ___ CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH , THE OWNERS OF THIS PROGRAM HAVE CHANGED , TO SOME- THEY ARE VERY UNPLEASENT INDIVISUALS. If you value your privacy then either use a version before 1.5 (im saying 1.5 to be safe even thats cutting it , or minutely possibly take chances with 1.6) or download another bit torrent client! Anything from 1.8 and later is definitely trickware/malware. If you absolutely must run it , make sure you either sandbox it first or have some pretty decent and hefty security measures in place. If your worried about the feds comin nocken , heh , stay clear. You can get a old version of this program here. http://www.OldVersion.com/program.php?n=utorrent Don't say no one warned you. Do some research on the program and the owners first. If your pro-net try the EFF. If you want an alternate program , Halite is open source! and offers 80% of the things uTorrent does and is growing by leaps and bounds. PS: BETANEWS... We realy need A "0" raiting. |

This build has a serious bug: If you have a piece which was part of a "Don't Download" file (and the rest part of a downloading file) it will never hash correctly! Basically, if you are not downloading the entire torrent, and mark one or more files "Don't download" adjacent files which share pieces will never finish and your client will begin blocking legitimate peers. |

God, you guys. Your running an alpha! Live with the crashes, at least until it is beta. This is for cutting the bugs down, not for downloading all your pr0n and movies/software/whatever without crashing. Use the latest stable from utorrent.com if you need rock solid performance. Many private trackers will not allow the beta/alpha versions on there site's , anyway. |

to all no-responsibility open-source halite paranoid kids out there...and...WHAT? will utorrent steal your teddy bear or something? ;) 1. utorrent is the best. period. point zero. over. the fact. no other client can match the quality and robustness of this simple .exe file...and it the end, the other bit torrent connections point are using it, YOU ARE DOWNLOADING FILE from them... 2. if you are paranoid, just use the stellar utility - Process monitor from sysinternals - and COMPLETELY MONITOR this .exe file with it (examine the logs). It will show you everything, not just registry entries, but even your sister ****ing your best friend. http://www.microsoft.com...isk/processmonitor.mspx 3. get a result...and you see? nothing suspicious...not hurting your nice and flashy computer, your secret files, projects, photos of naked Lima you like so much or anything elese in any way. Sorry to say but uTorrent is dead. I have to say that the client is not reliable anymore. I use IP Filters both from http://www.emule-mods.de/?mods=ipfilter (just drop the file to Application Data ---> uTorrent folder) and PeerGuardian. Both show that the new versions of uTorrent try to connect some rather suspicious places, sometimes even if idle. I will use v. 1.61 till Halite matures and switch to the new client then. I do not know what v. 1.8 transmits (maybe some statistics? or maybe not?), but it does it without the knowledge of the user. |

I have been a Utorrent user for years. I mosty use Newsgroups now, but anyway. Funny thing happened to me when I installed this 1.8 alpha this morning. I was downloading a few "Rifftracks" movies. They are made buy the guys who do MST3K where you can buy thier MP#'s and sync the music to the movie. OOOOrrrr... You can find a Rifftrax torrent and down load the movie with the track already synced, rip it to your XBox 360 to watch it. I start downloading and in an hour later my ISP connection dies. They are our power company BTES who jusr started selling 5mb fiber connects for $49 a month no tax. I call them up to see why my internet isn't working since I have never had any problems before. They said they got a call from "Level 3" and were ordered to terminate my service for downloading movies illegally. I played it all off like , "Um I wasn't. Maybe someone is stealing my wi-fi." Then the guy was cool as ****. He's like "Calm down. You are not in trouble man. They don't have any of your info. We just like to give you a warning to stop doing it." I was sweating. Then they started naming the movies I was downloading, "The Matrix, Ultrviolet, etc..." I said "Those are Rifftracks!" He didn't know what that was. When I explained they are made by the MST3K guys turned out he was a fan like me. We started talking computer s*** and he was way cool. He said "I am reactivating your account, and I am even bumoing you up to 10mb for the cost of 5mb." (I guess they are beta testing the 10mb service) Then he said, "Next time if you are going to download movies and music illwgally, just make sure you don't upload it, that's how they catch you." I am neer using uTorrent again. The guy promised me he wouldn't give them my info and in their eyes my account was and still is deactivated. I think I'll try this Usenext thing out, I hear good things. |

just type "%appdata%\utorrent" in the "Run" app, it is where it saves uTorrent is a very efficient bittorrent client, gets the job done, gives nice speeds, low resources needed, even the download size is small, stable always (at least for me but i've heard people having some issues, however the utorrent forums helps tons and you cna get ur problems solved almost right away). I used to dislike the super-seeding settings seems that got fixed some time ago and I cant thank enough for it. Even after all this time where it has been called adware, spyware, trojan, sold out and whatever noone has actually seen any of that happening and i dont think they will ever show any proof of utorrent being a scam. I give it a 5 since is not always u find a program that gives u all you need from it, for so small file size and for so little PC needs and running so stable, wish more apps were done like this. |

I agree with everything Prospero424 said. utorrent rocks. But it would be good to know where utorrent keeps its settings. There's no .ini file and it doesn't seem to write anything to the registry except file associations. |

First, my review: Excellent light-weight client with all of the speed and almost all of the features offered by most of the much more resource-intensive clients. If resource usage is a concern, nothing is better, and it's still only 215K on disk! Performance tips for broadband users (6Mbit or better): Limit your downloading to three or fewer downloads at the same time, raise the maximum allowed connected peers per torrent to 125-150, and raise the global max to 250. If you regularly have more than three active downloads, don't do this; leave the settings at their defaults. Enable outgoing encryption as well (don't force it on, just enable it), and make sure DHT is on and working properly if you're behind a router. As to many of the negative "reviews": It has already been "dissected" and closely scrutinized by some of the most paranoid people in the P2P community, and they still can't point to ONE SINGLE THING that even shows evidence of suspicious activity, much less proves it. And for everyone saying "it's slow, it's buggy, it sucks!" how about being specific? If it's crashing for you, why not say when or how? If it's slow, why don't you relate the circumstances of whatever speed comparison you're making? I suspect it's because 90% of those making these claims haven't even USED the 1.7.x clients and are just repeating what they've read in the comments on some warez site about how uTorrent "sold out" and simply want to b****. |

As always, by far the best BitTorrent client. I don't know what some of these other reviewers are talking about, it is very stable and there are no relevant bugs that I've encountered since I started using this [frequently] more than a year ago. Very low resource requirements. Why is the screenshot of version 1.3, which is about two years old? |

Enter your review (good or bad) without criticise other reviews. If you like it, it's ok ;stop attacking to everyone who has a different opinion. Now my review. uTorrent was good. Now it isn't. The stability and speed averages it had, now disappeared. I agree that 1.6 version was the last stable (both performance and speed). Unfortunately there are no many good torrent clients because most of them have problems now. Original Bitorrent, BitComet, and now utorrent got wrong, each for differnt reasons. Azureus is my choice. Good speeds, stable, many options to tweak, open source and safe. |

Isn't it funny how almost every single "reviewer" who gives uTorrent the lowest rating gives absolutely NO valid reason for doing so? It's always "uTorrent sucks!1!11" or "Azureus Rulez!" or the usual conspiracy theories backed up only by their own paranoia. "USE AZUREUS" IS NOT A REVIEW! And giving this software the lowest rating possible because you like another client better isn't, either. It's an exercise in fanboyism. Anyway, as I related in a previous review: only one version of uTorrent has EVER given me stability problems, and uTorrent updated itself to a fixed version only a few minutes after the one and only crash. The turnaround for the fix was less than a day, and that's good by ANY standards. If you have a dedicated server with plenty of RAM and resource usage is not a concern, Azureus is great. I've used it for years and the added functionality you can get through plugins is a real edge, even if the Vuze storefront interface gives it a higher bloat factor. But if you torrent on a workstation in the background, play games on the same machine, or simply have an older or less powerful computer, uTorrent is by far the best choice out there. Don't listen to the FUD being spread by kids who seem to all get their tech info from leetwarez.com or whatever. They really and truly don't know what they're talking about. |

I've been using BitComet for a long time now, and I'm wary on changing to uTorrent because it uses very little memory and the filesize is too small. So I never really tried uTorrent. But I tried it anyway since I'm curious. After a months of testing, I don't see much different from BitComet until I realized I haven't been using BitComet at all. Why? Maybe because uTorrent is indeed a very good torrent client. But hey, don't take my word for it. In fact don't believe what I've just said. Just look around and see the rating and maybe someday... you'll login to Betanews just to give this 5 stars. |

This version (1.7.3) is the first version I've ever had crash on me. Luckily, not ten minutes after it crashed, they released another update (1.7.4). BTW, Strigeus is still on board this project, even if he's not spending as much time with it as he did when he was the primary developer. Like the other guys said: don't listen to the conspiracy theories; they've been thoroughly debunked and have yet to provide a SINGLE shred of actual evidence showing this program does anything potentially malicious. If resource usage is a concern for you, then this is still the best BitTorrent client around. |

Ben said: " ...Very well programmed, fantastic app, even though i still use v1.6, because i have not enough trust in newer versions... " Then, why you give 5 out of 5 Ben? Many users here (and me among them) used this client. The last good, safe, trustful and bugs-free version was 1.6 Now the 2 words bigmama used: "utorrent sucks" I think that describe this client very well. utorrent v1.7.x: * Speed sucks * RIAA is behind * Many bugs * No support Bram Cohen/Bitorrent did it. They destroyed one of/ maybe the best torrent client. The only client that is still trustful is Azureus. I prompt users to change to Azureus (the best open source client) or another open source client (e.g. the small/lite Halite client search sourceforge to download it). |

Emergency, switch to Azureus / Vuze. Bit torrent recently went on a Jihad to close up the bittorrent source code and the protocol. They bought micro-u-torrent. Since Ashwin, Bram and the BitTorrent company are now closed source collaborators with the RIAA/MPAA, you are no longer safe using products coming from them. They also want to watch the media be distributed and the reason for closing the source was the ability for the client to talk back to Bittorrent, CALLING HOME. |

I don't know what the low ratings are about. In fact, it seems the reviewers don't know either since they seem unable to provide constructive feedback. I love uTorrent for its size, speed, features etc. When I saw that the original developer had sold it to the guys at BitTorrent.com (the guys that invented torrents), I was very nervous as these guys had sold out to the big studios/record labels about a year ago to stop being sued. I wondered if the client could be trusted. Well, today my fears were realised after receiving this: "It has been determined that utorrent 1.7 and upwards has a bug that reports your stats incorrectly. It has also been determined that it reports private info outside of the tracker. we advise anyone using these versions to downgrade back to utorrent 1.6.1. you can download it by clicking HERE . Anybody using 1.7 or above does so at their own risk and we will not be given any user support." I am going back to 1.6.1 and never upgrading. it pisses me off that this s*** can happen. I hope this causes a big backlash towards these guys. Bongo... ps, more info on uTorrent's OWN forums http://forum.utorrent.co....php?pid=262771#p262771 |

From the same page http://forum.utorrent.co....php?pid=262771#p262771 here is what i found out at one tracker thats banning it: Is it allowed here? NO Why? uTorrent 1.7, NO other torrents going other then 1 linux iso torrent, no other applications running (actually running in wine), separate dedicated IP = Mediasentry IP hits 36. Halite, same torrent, same system = 0 Media sentry IP hits. Every version > 1.6.1 is Bittorrent Inc., which is directly in partnership with the movie studios. Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures, News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, Palm Pictures and Kadokawa Pictures USA etc etc . In fact versions > 1.7 don't even have the same developer doing it. It's all handled now by Bittorrent Inc's development. The original author (up to 1.6.1) is no longer even part of the project. Right from uTorrent's FAQ "Who makes µTorrent? Ludvig Strigeus (ludde) is the original author and former maintainer of µTorrent. BitTorrent Inc's developers are the current maintainers of µTorrent. " Will it ever be allowed? NO If your in doubt trrace these IP's that were blocked from outgoing through my firewall with uTorrent 1.7 64.124.145.113 64.124.145.104 206.169.225.92 64.34.174.141 64.34.172.152 206.169.170.246 206.169.230.102 and here are the whois/trace: http://whois.domaintools.com/64.124.145.113 Abovenet Communications, Inc http://whois.domaintools.com/64.124.145.104 Abovenet Communications, Inc http://whois.domaintools.com/206.169.225.92 Time Warner Telecom, Inc. http://whois.domaintools.com/64.34.174.141 Peer 1 Network Inc. http://whois.domaintools.com/64.34.172.152 Peer 1 Network Inc. http://whois.domaintools.com/206.169.170.246 Time Warner Telecom, Inc. http://whois.domaintools.com/206.169.230.102 Time Warner Telecom, Inc. |

BitTorrent acquired uTorrent. 'Nuff said right there... It's still a solid program, but its been going downhill. Azureus does hog a tremendous amount of RAM, but in today's age, where you should have at least 1GB, it shouldn't be a problem. I have also noticed better performance with Azureus as well. I'll take the extra bloat for the added performance and confidence (even if its false) in the product. |

I had been using utorrent for long but stopped because of the speed problem (slow download). Since then I have switched to the newer Bitcomet 0.90 (which many users hated because it's bloated and banned on trackers?). Bitcomet clearly downloads faster with the same configuration.. When uTorrent 1.7 was released last week, I gave it a try again, and it was still slow. I quickly switched back to Bitcomet to do a comparison and Bitcomet is downloading at at least twice the speed. I really want to know if this is related to the ISP throttling, but the only think I want is faster download from my already crippled BT speed. |

To take valid results bigmama you should have same connection on different machines, with the same configuration downloading the same torrent the same time. However, I admit that speed issues is a big problem for utorrent 1.7.x uTorrent is worse than the previous stable 1.6 version and that is a retrogression not progress |

The program is for sure the best among its competitors and of its kind but is an average on the absolute scale. It needs a lot of features to improve or to introduce which have been suggested and posted several times by various users. Unfortunately, whenever somebody has suggested an improvement, some new feature or pointed some weakness of the package which the author should note, instead of the developer some other super-user jumped in the scene and start criticising the user as he is a newbie. Quite immature behaviour. As previously quoted by some user that if somebody has not faced a problem it does not mean that the problem does not exist. Also if it is not existing on your computer it does not mean that it will not happen on anyone else computer. When the software crashes on some computer it means it is not perfectly accomodating with other software and that's why beta software are introduced for users' reviews, so let them report the instance but with some other details like what hardware/software they are using. Most of the users set lesser uploading speed like 2k or 3k and expect the downloads to be 100k or more; which is against the ethics of Torrents. As a sincere and consistent user, I would like to suggest a few features to be added in a later release which I believe may make the difference, upon accomplishment: 1. Unlike other Torrent Clients it should have its own search engine like in other P2P file sharing softwares (like Ares, Bearshare etc). 2. It should have a built-in configuration utility which analyze and either do it automatically or suggest the optimal configuration to user as most of the users are non-technical. 3. To 80% users I belive speed is the main concern which is a primary issue since last stable release. 4. Mostly the speed problems are due to router firewall and not windows firewall. Those users who are connected to ISP via cables and not connected through routers are not facing speed problems due to easy port forwarding and hence do not have an idea of this problem. Also for non-dedicated/shared users there is no fix static IP which gives problem while configuring port forwarding. Hence if the software could pin-point the problem it would be easier for the user to correct it. 5. Such problems concerning port forwarding are not observed this much severe in other File sharing programs like Ares, iMesh, Bearshare etc. Whereas the same configuration in Torrents are pain in A??. The developers should consider this issue seriously. For users who are not very familiar with configuration of Torrents and are facing problems, I would like to suggest checking the following link for guidance in confoguration. Hope it may solve several issues: http://www.afterdawn.com...hive/utorrent_guide.cfm Lastly, I would like to request senior users to act positive by sending their suggestions or their configuration to share the knowledge. |

For me still the best torrent client. - No speed problem : tested Azureus and µTorrent, and both have the same speed. Azureus just start downloading faster, but I don't care. - Very light : I have 2Go RAM and don't really care about this point. But Azureus is runnin on Java Platform which is really annoying. - Not Open Source : Yes I prefer Open Source cause it's untouchable BUT I'm rating the quality of this software and its security. - Still many kids who rate this software 1 with arguments that don't affect the Software. Pathetic ! (A software is bought so it becomes crap? Funny guys) Note : For guys who have speeds down while browsing, just check the Automatic upload in the µTorrent Settings. |

To me, the huge improvement in RSS parsing is best thing that could happen BUT huge memory leak is another major problem. 500MB in just an hour is scary. It's not DHT that's causing this but probably incompatibility with some other softwares like firewall, antivirus etc which the developers fail to detect. http://forum.utorrent.co....php?pid=261083#p261083 I'm not sure if µTorrent is now bundled with malware but the link above is kinda suspicious. Without any prove and confirmation from my firewall logs, i wouldn't worry too much about it though. |

veeoh: yes the program is free. but why not bash on it? utorrent 1.6 is really good, i agree. but the 1.7 beta series has been a catastrope and still is. suddenly the program started leaking tons of RAM (run it for a few days and it has consumed 2GB of ram). Do you know why? Because uTorrent was sold to bittorrent.com people and the orginal developer Ludvig is no longer working on it. Instead they have other programmers and they are seriously damaging what was once a very very good program. I dont think they do it on purpose. I think they do it because they are s***ty programmers. But that is the current situation and it's the truth. I am happy for Ludvig cos he probably made some good money out of it, but dont expect uTorrent to continue to be such a good program as it used to be, because the skill obviously left the house. |

That is my point too that a person using it since years should have felt the speed difference. The software rocks among other worst software but as comapred to the previous stable build it sucks. No major configuration nothing special but was working perfect. And now .... Providing it free doesn't chopped your right to comment on the errors. And off-course by these comments the author may improve his software, if he really wants. By the way, for basic configuration / tutorial for most of the new users, please find a nice article following the link below: http://www.afterdawn.com...hive/utorrent_guide.cfm |

I don't believe that a 2 years utorrent user cannot see the difference of the speed. For me, I don't care if the code is open or closed. No1 issue is speed and utorrent 1.7xxxxxx version builds speed-suck. |

I've been using uTorrent for 2 years and it's been rock solid for at least a year with many hundreds of Gigabytes. I can't find any issues with this new version over the last 48 hours with multiple downloads and multiple programs and games. I even tried rebooting, Standby and Hibernation to try to generate an error. The error might not exist in uTorrent but I can't speak for anyone but myself. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I can download and upload with a 425kB/s (my max bandwidth) with 8 different files downloading and only use 1-4% of my CPU and do this for months straight. I've used every version in the last year and never had a single problem. I have made several Settings changes. I use Demonoid.com, Isohunt.com and TorrentHarvester to find files. I have my Torrent open in STOPPED mode, I have my downloads go to my non-Windows drive (avoid Windows and gaming slow-downs). I also recommend having a separate directory in the same partition to move your completed files to (easier to keep track). Note: if you have a LOT of download/upload activity you can still experience reduced activity even if your CPU usage is negligible and you use a non-Windows drive. Why? You are still using the System bus. If you are curious, try running a Futuremark benchmark while downloading to see how many files you can download before the impact on your gaming experience is noticeable. (This is common to all Torrent programs, not just uTorrent) uTorrent works great for me and there's nothing I would change. I mean that. Nothing. |

Referring to the post of ITMaster, I also agree that they are cheating to some how. As I have noticed that if the system left idle, the download speed changed to fractions and the upload starts in full speed. I was thinking that it is normal but as you have mentioned it seems an intention. This simply means that I cannot now trust on the software like previous. The only good thing left in this software is that you can select easily what you want to download from a list of sub-torrents enclosed in the main torrent. |

I applause on the post of ITMaster. I was intending to add my comments earlier but I think there is not much to add as I have seen almost all my points have been added by ITMaster. I agree to all his suggestions. I am sure that after sometime some other user will comment you don't know how to configure it etc. Dude, it is not NASA program. Just a simple progie we were using since years without much configuration and it worked. I suggest the developer should use Ares, Bearshare etc. for some time just to see how enriched they are and then try to add such features in his program. It will not be leeching it will be learning which requires an open mind. |
| ITMaster | Jul 7, 2007 | 1.7 Build 3170 RC4 | ![]() 2 out of 5 |
Thanks God ... I have some users thinking the same way I do. Yes, uTorrent was the best client some time earlier. Till the last stable release 1.6 it works fine. But later almost all releases have created some problems. Speed mostly. In some earlier posts, it was observed that whenever some such problems have been posted by any user some junky users have criticised them and commented that they don't know how to configure. These users are most probably the agents from the developer justifying and hiding the facts. This is a most stupid excuse as a developer should develop a program for an average user in mind and not for a master as standard. The program should have tested the environment and auto-adjust the settings after the user's consent or at least have suggested the findings with an easy solution. By the way the same problems never came across in earlier releases. The developer has started the project unnecessarily huge. Forget Multi-Platforming concentrate on the daily issues reported by the users at a single platform. Also, I have noticed that they are cheating with you. As when you set the system the Download speed is more and upload is less which is intended. Just leave the system working and go for a coffee break. When you come back the download speeds is much lesser than the upload as the upload is in full swing. Just shake the mouse and the download again boost-up. Man, I cannot shake the mouse all night. That's was the policy of the BT earlier and was not the policy of the original uTorrent. May I suggest some key features though new to the Torrents, the developer should focus: 1. Built-in Search Capabilities like in Ares etc. 2. Auto-configuration of the software. 3. Making the project Open Source for clearing out the doubts. 4. Forget about Light Weight and Memory Hog type issues and make the program feature rich to be an all-in-one solution. I believe everybody nowadays have better computers, memory and connection. 5. Try to solve the Speed Issues which is a global demand to focus. Well, I sincerely wish that we could see uTorrent in the same old pace someday. Meanwhile you may give a try to HALITE also light weight. |

I would have once given µTorrent a 5, but after the BitTorrent buyout, I no longer trust the application. It is very sad to say, because µTorrent was once the ultimate client. I recommend using Azureus 2.5, as 3/Vuze is nothing but an Azureus skin that adds significant bloat to the application. Azureus is Open Source, so you can be sure that Big Brother isn't spying on you. While many of you may still trust this client, I think it is time to say goodbye to the old king and move on. Taken from the sticky FAQ on the µTorrent forums, this is why I will no longer use the client: Q: What are the terms of the acquisition? A: We are not disclosing details of the transaction. Q: How will uTorrent’s technology be integrated with the current BitTorrent client? A: Although uTorrent is lightweight, it is missing the patented innovations BitTorrent has made at the protocol level. It is also lacking an implementation for Mac and Linux. We will improve uTorrent in these arenas. Q: What will happen to uTorrent’s employees? Will Ludwig Strigeus become a part of the BitTorrent team? A: Ludvig Strigeus will serve as a technical consultant. Q: Will the uTorrent code base be released into the open source? A: The uTorrent code base will remain closed source. |

I don't know if azureus is the best program. Maybe it is. Or maybe not. Whatever... What i see now, is that more and more features of azureus (dht, autospeed etc.) appear to utorrent. We loved utorrent for its simplicity. Sth that is missing now. Also i agree with a previous user. Version cycling is stupid. 2 releases every day :-p OK, publish an alpha release, 2 or 3 betas and 1 or 2 release canditates. We have a release for every build >:-( |

utorrent autospeed feature is silly. If you want autospeed switch 2 azureus. Also manual speed adjusting doesn't give the same up/down speed we had with the 1.6 version. Speed sucks because program sucks. Thats why! You don't need to be an expert to understand it. Nor to configure this stupid program. Many here stuck to this program... OK all of us loved this program for years. But we are very DISAPPOINTED now. Nothing else... After BitComet another bt client is getting worse and worse. This program has nothing to do with the old amd good utorrent. Switch 2 azureus. OpenSource, safe and the best speeds. thnx |

I too agree with zafarwaheed that we should follow the ethics and should not discuss and degrade the reviews of others. If the problem is not faced by us then it does not mean that it does not exist. Be open mind and respect others reviews. If you have some other views then post it individually. Regarding the prog, I am using it since the beginning and consider it to be the best among what is available. It doesn't mean that the program is flawless and needs no improvement. There are lots of suggestions posted by several users in past. Some of them, if I remember I have seen posted by zafarwaheed sometime earlier. If the author seriously concerntrate on them, no doubt it will be the BEST program in the genre. Currently, I am using Halite in parallel to uTorrent which is a light weight program like uTorrent and working also nice. |

Thanks JohnyBoy for supporting my views. I mean it's nothing personal to fight-on. I regret to find always that whenever someone try to post his review or experience with a one, two or three marking, some one jumps in the picture and start criticising him like he is an idiot and they are the masters. Folks, don't be harsh. If you are a guru and not facing any problem, it is good. But this gives you no authority to dis-respect others review though he might be an idiot. You expose your experience and let him post his. We are just 20 to 30 guys posting our reviews and off-course cannot reflect the reviews of 3 miilion or more users. |

And now my review for the software and suggestions as well. The software is very good much better than many others out there but not 100% perfect. Memory hog, light weight and least resource hungry ... these are all non-sense issues. If you are working on a 386 or 486 machine, it seems OK. Nowadays I believe everyone is having a Pentium at least (if not then it is not the fault of the rest of the world). Software developers should develop for advancements not for the left-behinds. I have seen earlier a post of zafarwaheed and I agree to him 100%. Summarizing, if this software is not of size 240K and of the size 10 times more i.e. 2.4MB what does it make the difference. When you are downloading a Movie of 1 GB so you could download a program of 2.4 or even 4 MB, which should be more attractive, more feature rich. Similarly, these sort of programs are not intended to work with in your office. I set it to start downloading, before going to bed and when I wake up all downloads are finished by that time. So if it uses my 1% RAM or 50% RAM it does not make any difference to me. Well, I am sure as soon as I post my open review some Jerk jumps in with his 5 points giving a big lecture on technology taking the side of the author (most probably the author with a different login name). |

NaytmaN, you're an idiot, those were false positives that appear for any app that requires registry access or has to unpack itself. Also, the peerguardian stuff is junk, any client that reveals your ip adress is a potential security risk, but µTorrent has no true backdoors, trojans, or DRM of any kind. Also, Azureus fanboys, you'll be forced to use the new Vuze version because 2.5 is no longer developed and will grow even more troublesome as new JavaVMs are released. Now that they've fixed the memory leaks, it's about time they clean the code up, I can see them reducing the clients size by 20k easily. In a few years, this will be as big as any other client, so in the meantime I use Halite. |

NaytmaN: The results of the virus scan are because the EXE was packed... some virus scanners automatically flag packed executables as suspicious because it is easier for them to hold viruses which a virus scanner cannot find. It does NOT automatically mean they contain viruses. For a full virus report you would have to find the tool used to pack the EXE (in this case it's not UPX, dunno what was used) and unpack it and scan it again. I bet if you take a random EXE... explorer.exe for example... and scan it, and then pack it with UPX or something and scan it again, you'll get more warnings. Also I would be interested to read this post you mention, but I can't seem to find it. [Edit: If you do mean the check for updates, I did find an interview with the former dev where he describes that the only information sent is a random number which can't be used to do any more than figure out how many people use µTorrent... IE statistics.] I suppose I should put a real review in here somewhere: µTorrent is an excellent client. It supports multiple torrents, has a plethora of options, supports assigning priorities to torrents or individual files (although I wish you had more than three levels to work with, a numerical ranking system would be nice, then I just number the files in the order I'd want them to download in and go to bed). It is portable (make an empty "settings.dat" and place it in the same folder as µTorrent) and very small, making it a good client to carry on my thumb drive. The only thing that annoys me is that if you have multiple torrents with multiple files each (enough to make a scrollbar in the "Files" tab listview) then when you switch torrents the files listview always shows the top files... it would be nice if it remembered where in the listview I was looking at files last. Still, that's nitpicking. 5/5 |

I've tried all the torrent clients out there, and while sometimes there is not much difference in speed between them, µTorrent combines the best of all of them. One has to commend the author that he didn't use one of the widely available graphic programming language which end up making the program bloated, but to combine speed, feature richness and leanness into an agreable package. |

I don't know what is up with the bad reviews.. But this is the best Torrent client I have used (and I have used a lot). The program it self is VERY light weight in size and uses very little ram in comparison to other programs. Azureus is a great client and everything but it runs on Java so it uses far more CPU and ram. Utorrent is one of the fastest loading, least resource using client I have ever used. As far as download speed, there is no real way of benchmarking torrent speeds, most of the people who see a speed difference are having issues with Firewall settings or it is just coincidence. |

"Yessssssssss. 3 releases in 2 days. 999999 releases the last month." Seems you don't understand how beta testing works. When bugs have been fixed, there's a new release and for µtorrent being a small and not too complex program (ala photoshop or similar apps) it is easier to have more releases. "Panathinaikos best team in Europe. Best fans everywhere.." ...and this is exactly related how to µtorrent? Seriously somewhere there's a discussion board for your chit-chat, but not here. On to µtorrent, I like the low memory usage, atm having 38 torrents in queue it's around 70 MB and yes I've 2 gig ram, but even these fill up quite fast when I'm running some games togehter with boinc, winamp, ts², etc. |

Nice, now it works properly with Wine under Linux as well as on Vista, two things that can't be said for the pre-1.7 versions. I wonder if that'll finally satisfy the knee-jerk naysayers (I'm not criticizing those experiencing legitimate problems). Probably not. Still the leanest, meanest client out there when resource usage is a concern. It's as fast as ever for me, and I haven't had a single problem with the new versions on the four machines I regularly run it on. |
| arbitrarynick | Jun 29, 2007 | 1.7 Build 2999 RC2 | ![]() 5 out of 5 |
It's not that no one understands your stance. It's that almost no one else is experiencing what you are experiencing, myself included. The other updates weren't just fancy features, and you need to realize that people were having actual problems _using_ the application, not just having simple speed problems. What good is speed if the thing crashes or doesn't work for some users? Many memory leaks have been plugged, stability has been improved. Almost everything has been given spit-shine ten times over, and it works near perfectly on Vista now (something you can't say about versions 1.6.1 and below). You're right, dedication isn't about ignoring facts. The BitTorrent team did not ignore the users who were reporting problems with old versions, and long-time bugs were corrected by their hands. They did not ignore Vista users. Speed: yes, it _is_ one of the most important metrics in determining what client is good, and I can't ignore the fact that the speed is as awesome now as it always has been; I still see µTorrent reaching my connection's maximum download rates regularly. Like I said earlier, testing is not as simple as measuring the speed of a torrent in one version, stopping it, and starting it in another version. BitTorrent isn't a protocol that is static enough for such a simple "test" to be valid. RC2: great as usual. |

I agree partly with the review of darkripper. I understand that from the 1.6 stable version till the beta versions of this software there is a major increase in size which means they have updated alot of features in the coming releases. But what features? I consider speed as the first and primary feature rather than some other fancy updates. I do not understand why many fellows do not understand our stand. If you are so practical then test a torrent on both new and old versions and you will get answer yourself. We all are dedicated users and spending time to share our opinions and experiences, but dedication doesn't mean ignoring facts. I will keep trying the betas but till now the old stable version is the best, I found. |
| ModderXManiac | Jun 29, 2007 | 1.7 Build 2991 RC | ![]() 4 out of 5 |
darkripper, I laugh at your inability to leave a good review. Everyone knows that speed varies pending on # of peers and their bandwidth, and the fact that Azureus has a proprietary DHT protocol makes that an unfair comparison. Not only that, the client has sold out to movie studios and now has a crappy interface, you'd soon be forced to upgrade from 2.5 as more bugs are squashed and 3.x will be the only one developed to work with new JAVA api's. And last but not least, for all we know, the lousy speed figures you are getting could be the result of you not knowing how to configure anything for your life. New revisions probably have rewritten network code, take that in mind. I feel that µTorrent is getting bloated in memory usage and needs considerably more work before an official release, so RC is an acceptable stage for it since it has enough major features to change from 1.6 to 1.7, now for them to squash bugs. I am still a dedicated user, and the fact that Ludvig is head of the development team, watching over it all, I trust that he will maintain µTorrent's good name. |

All this big changelog means that the program has been changed a lot. Better or Worse? We will find it in the next episode of the series :-p . For now i use 1.6.1 for quick and everyday use. | arbitrarynick | Jun 28, 2007 | 1.7 Build 2951 Beta | ![]() 5 out of 5 |
2951 is back to its usual stable self, so it's back to 5/5. zafarwaheed, I'd agree with you, if only those FUD-packers had actually written their own experiences. Opinions on the software? That should fall under experiences. Opinions without experience should _not_ be considered as part of a valid review. It _really is_ that simple. The full beta changelog contains a large amount of remarkable changes, but I guess the word "remarkable" itself is purely subjective. As for the speed difference, making comparisons just based on stopping one version, starting another, and checking the speeds is not a proper way to measure the speeds. There are too many factors to consider when you want to compare speeds, and the only way to even come close to making a valid comparison would be to test over _many_ torrents. Anyhow, I respect your opinion, at least you've tried. |
| zafarwaheed | Jun 27, 2007 | 1.7 Build 2951 Beta | ![]() 3 out of 5 |
Guys, Most of us start pointing each other by direct naming like its a personal tussle instead of writing our experiences or opinions about the software. This develops an unhealthy criticism. Moreover, everyone who start using this progy for a couple of months thinks himself to be authority on this software without actually comparing it with competitor softwares or even with its old releases. It is not necessary that what your opinion is, should be the opinion of others. They have a right to comment freely too. By the way, I love this software, very nice and light-weight but still I must say that since the time it is sold out, no remarkable feature has been added in that. Rather, I would prefer to load the old stable version as I have noticed that the same torrent in both the versions shows remarkable download speed difference. |

Especially with that whole "innovation" thing; uTorrent has never been about innovation. It's always been about efficiency. |

i think after utorrent was sell, the program was increase the data amount and no many features are aplied to justify this. The spirit off creator was lost. We can say is a good program with 250KB, but when we look back, this is almost double from beginning and we don't see so many innovation as in the past. |

Ludvig is head of the new dev team and is over watching every bit of development, and for the time being, there is no known DRM to this client, so I will continue to mark it as the best client that it is. You can't say Azureus is better since they've sold out to some rediculous Vuze thing. |

@arbitrarynick; finally someone who says the words that have been lying on my tongue for so long. I no longer look at the reviews on FileForum, because too many of them contain no usable information whatsoever. Most are just screaming things without any arguments to back it up. Then about the program; in BitTorrent, features are more important than speed. Why? Because you need to keep up a high up/down ratio, that's what bt is all about. Up is almost always just a fraction of down, so if you complain about speeds that probably means you are not sharing in the way bt is meant. That's just sad. uTorrent is by far the best program I have used; small, efficient, fast and stable. That goes for 1.7 as well. I've been using 1.7 version for weeks non stop, and the only reason for my bt client not responding (I have a separate PC for that) was Peerguardian blocking my VNC... |
| zafarwaheed | Jun 16, 2007 | 1.7 Build 2585 Beta | ![]() 2 out of 5 |
It was my favourite client till not sold out the current developers (rather purchasers). I too agree with other dudes that the software is getting worst in speeds as compared to the original 1.6 version. Adding features should not be the prime consideration. To maintain the previous features should also be done. Not to be negative it sucks. The download speed for several software is worst. The same software is running OK on BitCommet and also on old stable release. I don't understand on what ground people they are giving it a 5 now. SPEEEEEEED should be the main concern I believe. |

@DudeBoyz: You amuse me. Sounds to me like you're just another a fudpacking tard who's lying about having problems, and haven't even bothered using the latest versions. Do tell, for someone who has bugs and doesn't bother to report them to devs that are actively listening to feedback, should anyone *really* take your "review" seriously? Don't want to help fix any supposed bugs? Then don't b**** about them here; TBH, you come off looking pretty stupid instead. If you haven't used a software, DON'T write a review about it. Simple. FileForum isn't your personal soapbox for venting your paranoia. |

Not as stable or reliable as the last actual version coded by the original author - 1.6 Build 474. They should have required after the buyout that the original author be the one still coding the app. Whomever has taken over the coding seems to be doing a terrible job by comparison. |

@animalleecher Well, how about this... They closed the forum because the involved have already explained over and over again what the buy was all about - and how this will affect µTorrent. But, there are still people who try to make a point that the buy will make µTorrent include DRM (which whould be done exactly how???), or worse - µTorrent would start sending data about what you download to MPAA... Come on, be serious. This has been, is, and will continue to be a great torrent client. If you're afraid of something that might happen (even though, only God knows why anyone would do what you and others are suggesting is happening with the source-code to µTorrent) - stop using µTorrent. And, STOP spreading false information, to which you have absolutely no foundation. If you have ANY real documents or information which can substantiate your claims - please give the rest of us the possibility to read this. If you don't have any real facts och documents - but rather just a feeling that this is no good... Well, state that's the case - instead of trying to tell the rest of the world that they are wrong. If you don't like that people want to make money from their work - kudos Ludde - well, you'd better try to find some other planet to live on. And STOP rating the application based on you opinion of the company behind it! The ratings are for the APPLICATION! Myself - I prefer Azureus to µTorrent, but that's because I like the modularity. µTorrent is a great application, which uses few resources and has all the features a standard user needs. That's it, and that's that. |

Agreed. 1.6 version 474 was the last version coded by the original author. Thankfully, that version can still be downloaded from FILE HIPPO. The link is on the right side of this page: http://www.filehippo.com/download_utorrent/ Direct Link (it should point right to it, I hope): http://www.filehippo.com/download_utorrent/?1258 Versions done after 474 are coded by the original bit-torrent guys, the ones that are working with the MPAA, etc. Besides, this version is buggy as heck. The original programmer was much more efficient and capble, it would seem. As this thing develops - in the wrong direction - we who have used and rated it over time should be allowed to criticize the newer versions, which are far inferior to the original. You say people should not complain without the facts - but why not say that people should not trust this new programming team until they come out and explain exactly what they are doing and why the program is so much less stable than before? Why don't they come out and assure people that these changes won't violate privacy rights? If Utorrent went Open Source, perhaps that would allow all of these issues to be resolved? |

| DudeBoyz | Jun 7, 2007 | 1.7 Build 2465 Beta | ![]() 1 out of 5 |
Actually, I think Release 1.6 Build 474 was the last true copy of Utorrent before it was bought out. I have read that the original creator of the program is no longer the one actually developing and programming the product. Given who bought the software and what they stand for and how they work so closely with the entertainment industry, I think I would stick with 1.6 Build 474 and not go any higher. Especially if the original programmer is in fact NOT the one doing the coding. Utorrent 1.6 Build 474 still works very well and should do the trick very nicely. No need to take the chance that the code may be compromised. |

uTorrent 1.6 ** DRM-Free ** Hollywood bought up the official BitTorrent client and destroyed it. Later, BitTorrent bought up uTorrent. They're planning to implement DRM and all sorts of crap in all of the major torrent clients, including uTorrent and Azureus... The last good (and safe) client to use is uTorrent 1600 (1.600) which was released before they sold out to hollywood and BitTorrent... but it's getting harder and harder to find it, so here's the file containing the 1600 setup. |

Azureus is a retarded student at a very prosperous school, and µTorrent is the popular kid who will be successful who also picks on the 'tard, and you're being the counselor demanding that you respect the retarded and inferior Azureus...Correct? It's not gonna happen :D Since they have such a large dev team now I wish they'd start developing on .MAC and Linux api's, then azureus wouldn't have any advantages AT ALL. If you are looking for a good torrent client with light resources then utorrent is definitely the way to go. I still think Azureus is better, but some people are bothered by the large amount of memory usage. So basically if you want a torrent client with all the bells and whistles go with Azureus. Great program. Probably the best since Bitcomet has went downhill. The only thing I can find to pick on this program is there still is no ipblocker. So if any devs are reading this we want an ipblocker!!! |

Bigmama has written 5 reviews of uTorrent, so it's pretty obvious it's the developer of that other "professional" client. Most of his posts are just copies of his previous posts, with the addition of more rambling. Azureus is a 10mb download, and even bigger after the install. Plus, you would have to have a 25+mb Java platform installed, which is 45mb once installed. I am a huge fan of any software that is tiny, simple, and gets the job done. The latest version of uTorrent will always be on my flash drive, and Azureus will always be a piece of crap. |

i say it again and again and again utorrent is not bad it does the job very well it's small and portable but has less features than azureus has and using both clients i think azureus speed average is better -------------------------------- THIS IS MY OPINION WRITE YOUR COMMENT WITHOUT CRITICISING OTHER COMMENTS PLZ... --------------------------------- p.s. i think that some comments are from new utorrent developers. maybe betanews admins should delete comments answering to other guys. this is only to give a review and your opinion. not a chat forum :-p __________________________________ |

bigmama, nothing you say can be taken seriously since you insult all users here by referring to "Azureus being for professionals and utorrent for noobs". I am sorry, I didnt realize there were "professional" torrent downloaders. Is this some new profession I missed? Azureus has a lot of extra features that over half of the torrent population will never use and its ram usage, and yes it has its own memory leaks as verified by several third parties on their forums, isnt justifiable. I have 2GB of ram, but just because I have 2GB of ram doesnt mean I want an application, a torrent client none-the-less, using it all. utorrent allows me to download torrents, plain and simple. It has all of the options most users will ever need and it works. Its small, efficient and fast. |
| WillaimButlerYeats | May 24, 2007 | 1.7.0 Beta Build 1952 | ![]() 4 out of 5 |
I have used Azureus for a few years now and I continued to use it gritting my teeth over its ram usage and ui responsiveness while keeping my eye out for something a bit lighter. I tried uTorrent in its early days, but it just wasn't up to snuff. Recently though uTorrent has become the frog stomper; it doesn't hog system resources while sitting in the background doing its job, starts quickly, and doesn't require that I install Java. Not that a Java installation is a show-stopper, but if I can do a job quicker with less, there is my tool. Its ui is fine; not as skinnable as Azureus, but I don't spend much time in any torrent client interface for glitz to matter. Note that the 4 I gave the the app isn't that I believe uTorrent has serious shortcomings, only that I'd like to reserve 5 for something new and amazing and ground-breaking. |

not bad for its size (small and portable). take it with your flash memory stick everywhere. but azureus is better (more tools, more diagrams, better speed, plugins, safety, torrent publishing and much much more i cannot remember now) ------------ p.s. it's a blank ipfilter.dat su***rs and i didn't say that utorrent hasn't ipfilter. supports ip filtering but with an empty ip list it cannot block them. you must find a valid ipfilter.dat (like the one ed2k network clients use, in a valid format -for example peerguardian format, install it yourself, update it yourself) I said that azureus includes an ipfilter with the MEANING of an ipfilter that is updated automatically, informs you about banned clients, clients have been filtered out etc... ------------ stop spreading FUD memory leaks is not the same with memory usage utorrent has many memory leaks because it's a beta version. you can report errors, developers will fix bugs and when a stable version comes out will be ready for everyday usage. these versions are for betatesting. offcourse azureus has bigger memory usage but as another guy said, i don't care if µTorrent uses 12mb and azureus 40mb. if you have 1 gb ram and more thats not a problem. otherwise it's not azureus problem, but your computer sucks. the same amount of memory is using firefox with a couple of extensions. why you don't complain about firefox? well stop spreading FUD. you can play games, edit images and processing videos while azureus is running. azureus is just an application. it's not a "memory-eater" like pc games or photoshop for example.... ------------ and stop criticize my opinion. if you like it, write a comment why, give 5 stars and thats it. µTorrent is good but not the best client out there. in my opinion azureus is the best._ |

"azureus is a professional tool, utorrent is just for n00bies." Is that supposed to be some kind of joke? Because it's not funny. You can't even compare uTorrent to Azureus, it's just not fair. uTorrent is in a whole other class. Azureus a professional tool? Quite the opposite. It's a bloated piece of sh*t with lots of useless eye candy that gets old real fast. Last time I tried Azureus, it was using ~40MB of RAM just sitting idle, without any torrents loaded. Java sucks, get over it. Any program that relies on Java is crap. I don't need a bunch of pretty graphs and fancy user interface. I need something that works, and works well. That's why I use uTorrent over all other torrent clients. Like I said, nothing even comes close. |
| photonboy | May 8, 2007 | 1.7.0 Beta Build 1703 | ![]() 5 out of 5 |
uTorrent rocks. I've EXTENSIVELY compared uTorrent to Azureus over a period of 2 years. I have several times used the SAME downloads and monitored the results in Azureus, then REASSIGNED the SAME torrents to uTorrent etc. I monitored: 1) CPU usage 2) Memory 3) Download Speeds I also compared usability. uTorrent has been beating Azureus solidly for a year. Even at 350kB/s upload and 70kB/s download with a total of 10 files uTorrent only averaged 1-2% and sometimes it registered 0% as it must have been less than 0.5%. It does NOT have a memory leak. It uses some RAM to optimize read/writes to the hard drive. If you are low on RAM you can make some changes. **I haven't had a single issue in a year with over 500GB of transfers. Settings. (I'd copy these if I were you): 1) Start in "stopped mode" 2) Make a directory called "Torrent Downloads" or similar, then make subfolders like "Downloading" and "Completed", then make your links in Preferences so your completed files move to your Completed folder. Much easier to keep track of. 3) **Use a second hard drive for your downloads. The hard drive usage will severely impact your PC experience. An absolute MUST. 4) 5 downloads is sometimes optimal. It varies slightly so experiment but my experience is that 6 or more will actually become slower. (May depend on Modem etc.) 5) Not a SETTING, but many ROUTER's will limit your download speed if you have multiple downloads. One download might be fine but four might drop your speed in half. Solution is to buy a FASTER router, use a SWITCH instead (slightly less secure but what I use now) or hook straight to the modem (no one else hooked to the system can use it.) 7) "Pre-allocate all files" 8) DO NOT check "use *.ut!" extension. You can often preview samples enough to see quality once they reach 60% and you should have your files set to MOVE to the "Completed" folder so there's no confusion. (Not a big deal if you do select this) Windows stuff: 1) make sure to use "Cool 'n Quiet" (AMD) or Intel equivalent. Double-check using appropriate tool to see the CPU freq and power drop when not needed. (need drivers from site, set power to "Minimal power Management, may need AMD dual-core optimizer and a monitoring tool) 2) Turn the hard drives OFF after 30 minutes or so (if 2 drives then non-uTorrent drive will shut off when not needed.) 3) Play around with on-board fan control settings through BIOS and settings. It makes a HUGE difference. *Note: AMD "screwed-up?" and released many new Fan/Heatsink combos with dual-core CPU's that have a fan with its own speed control. This conflicts with on-board controls. You can turn OFF your onboard controls but the minimum FAN is set way too high. The only solution is to switch fans with a compatible earlier model that doesn't have speed control built in or buy a solution like the "Sonic Tower" instead. 4) Always double-check to ensure you have the latest drivers. Especially check the Motherboard manufacturer to see if your System drivers are up to date. If you know your manufacturer (like nVidia) you are sometimes better to go to the nVidia site instead. Many people have degraded performance by simply installing Windows which may or may not install the optimal drivers. Motherboard CD's are frequently out of date by the time you open the box so I always go to the website and download them. (be VERY careful to ensure you don't try to install the wrong drivers) And "Bigmama", I'm sorry to be blunt but you are just wrong. uTorrent should run very well even on low-end systems. |

The best! Low CPU usage (typically 1-4% only). My Athlon 64 X2 4800+ CPU is currently downloading 10 files at a bandwidth of 420kB/s and registers ONLY 1%. Wow! I've downloaded far too much stuff with no problems. I replaced Azureus and will never look back. uTorrent used to have some issues but I've been using it constantly for over 18 months with no issues. Memory leak? I don't think so. The program typically uses up to 50MB of RAM to optimize your experience. You can change some settings to reduce RAM if absolutely necessary. For example, RAM is used to reduce hard drive tasks. This program is pretty close to perfect. **I recommend people use their 2nd hard drive as the download location otherwise many tasks will be slowed due to hard drive access. Since there is very little CPU usage you can have high download speeds with basically NO impact on your gaming or other tasks. |

This build will occasionally crash if you have NOD32 installed. Had some "memory could not be read" errors which the developers failed to identify. Then there is the memory leak issue. Leave it running for just few hours and it will use up to ~50MB physical memory and even more virtual memory. Despite all that, i'm still pleased that BitTorrent developers are doing their best in getting things right. Hopefully the next build will be better. |

I'd rate 5 for 1.6.x bur 1.7 BETAS still have a few glitches (they are usable, and I'm using it right now, but there's still room for improving)!! And stop the FUD about BitTorrent Inc. they are not the bad guys!! They are just making an effort to not be sued because of their creation (The BitTorrent protocol) ;) There's no prove of spying at all!! And yeah the development scheme has changed a bit since Ludde left the building, but the guys at BitTorrent Inc. have been trying really har to please us. They are porbably still reading and understanding all the 50.000 to 60.000 lines that compose uTorrent code base left by Ludde (and remember they built the official client in python not in C++) so give them some time!! |

@bigmama - uTorrent does not contain Spyware and SafePeer is only a false security blanket, you can get caught doing "illegal" downloading just as easy using it or not. It is just a matter of what your getting and whos tagging people. Besides, if you are that worried, you can always use Protowall/PeerGuardian, afterall SafePeer just uses the same database anyhow. uTorrent can work just as well speed wise, but you need to know how to setup the connection according to your up/down speed. (no "autospeed like AZ). I get great speeds on uTorrent, actually, since I tweaked my up limit a bit after testing my line a few times, I have been getting better speeds on uTorrent that I had on AZ even with or without the autospeed plug. uTorrent also uses significantly less resources and so you will have better results if running other programs while uTorrent is running. In most cases Azureus is ideal for an extra PC in which you don't plan on using much while downloading. |

To those saying mem usage is higher - remember, most beta versions include debugging code so when bugs happen and the program crashes, it generates better output for debugging the issue. Just a bit of forewarning. Azureus sucks...it's mem consumption is asinine. |

BTW. Azureus fans; any program that displays your IP address to random people on a vast network isn't safe, so saying that Azureus is safer is assanine, every BT client is "unsafe" in that manner. I am getting skeptical of this program like most others are, but what's even worse is that Azureus is practically going commercial with the Vuze project. On top of that, Bitcomet is adware, and the official BT client sucks...and there goes all the good clients, unless Bitlord and Bittornado start moving faster in development.. Until there's proof of DRM/malware/privacy/etc, I still give this at least 4. P.S. OSX doesn't have much in the way of API's to develop an app like this, Windows and Linux are much more mature in this respect, so I wouldn't expect the OSX release for QUIIIITE awhile, and it won't have nearly as many features as this. |

uTorrent is still going strong. Dudeboyz, tsk tsk tsk. First of all, who cares if it isn't owned or developed by the original author anymore? Google Earth isn't and you seem to LOVE that program. It isn't even open source! What if they send out the places you visit and stuff you look at without you knowing? All of this is FUD and you know it. Just try and prove it. No one has come up with a shred of evidence uTorrent is doing anything wrong. Put your mind to something more creative instead of creating conspiracy stories. |

It was one of the best, but it's not any more. Bit Spirit is a great alternative, and Azureus, being Open Source, is as well. There is no reason to stick with a client that is no longer owned or developed by the originator of the program. It is not as fast or efficient as it used to be and since it is not open source, you just can't be sure of how secure it is. UPnP problems abound in this release, and Auto Uplink Throttling? Ain't a good thing. Not worth taking a chance on. There are plenty of other worthwhile options out there. |

I finally tried the newest 1.7beta. I cant explain why, but speeds are faster than the old 1.6 version. So I agree with "ZenoLabs", just because there is lots of spyware out there doesn't make every program spyware. Especially when uTorrent is "hands-down" the best torrent client and updates usually improve software. |

Spyware? Can you prove what you say, bigmama? Or are ya just a paranoic? The FACTS at the moment are this is simply the best torrent client on the road. |

It's been totally rock solid. But I'd wait for the new version to come out of beta. I can't really see what's to improve. I might just stay put with the current nonbeta release, at least until the dust settles. Love it! |

@photonboy: I can only say that i agree with you, after a few years of using torrent clients i have to say that you point out the differences here, ok there may be more differences but these are the highlights atleast if you compare the clients perfomancewise. I personally favour µTorrent since it's lower demands on my system which isn't the most powerful out there i can say but Azuerus runs nicely on it too but i guess it's just a preference issue. Both clients are great use which one you like. |

I've done extensive comparisons between uTorrent and Azureus. uTorrent used to have issues and so did Azureus though both work fairly well now. However, for my test I collected 25 different torrents from a variety of sites (Demonoid, Piratebay and 4 more) and started to download. Long story short is uTorrent came out on top by a narrow margin and I could see no advantage to Azureus except for the version which uses the program Zudeo if you like that sort of thing. I'm baffled with negative comments regarding uTorrent. I've downloaded over 100GB with Azureus and probably at least 50GB now with uTorrent. I've used both on and off over two years. Example comparison of data collected over several days by periodic STOPPING and SWAPPING of torrents from Azureus to uTorrent and vice versa: Azureus: 145MB RAM 6% CPU 200kB/s average download uTorrent 42MB RAM 1% CPU 200kB/s average download *Your experience may differ due to your computer hardware or Torrent site so try both and try to find your own method of comparing. My specs are: Athlon 64 X2 4800+ 2GB RAM |

Actually in any fair benchmark taken between the two, uTorrent always comes out ahead. Just google it - Azureus vs uTorrent. Still, I'll be switching to Azureus when it improves some more; skeptical about the new owners here. |

the best just gets better! unless of course you are one of those paranoid freaks. then of course you need to use azureus.. the big fat system hog! |

I have to agree with ModderXManiac for the most part, the program seems to be exactly doing what it is supposed to. I have used utorrent for a year now, and this beta seems to be just as good as any previous beta. The only thing worth noting is, there is phone home on startup.... but utorrent has always done that, even on the previous good builds. To verify this if you like, install Peer Guardian, and relaunch the program and you will see a blocked address pop up each time even if check for updates is disabled. Reality is it aint a big deal if your actually legitament in the first place. Secondarily, there is no proof that I have seen as yet to conclude that they are spying, so therefore I remain with a rating of 4. |

I am getting skeptical of this program like most others are, but what's even worse is that Azureus is practically going commercial with the Vuze project. On top of that, Bitcomet is adware, and the official BT client sucks. There goes all the good clients, unless Bitlord and Bittornado start moving faster in development.. Until there's proof of DRM/malware/privacy/etc, I still give this at least 4. |

I agree with DudeBoyz. Just stay away from it,go for open source programs. Open source programs are your best option for security.Humans are like sheeps,if alot of people are using or doing it,for them it means that it is good and they will do the same. Its like believing that if millions and millions of people are eating McDonalds means that it is good food, nooo its still junk food. Dont be followers, think for your self and innovate. Best regards, have a nice day. :-) |

The paranoid among us should consider that: 1) This beta is only 27k larger than was version 1.6, which is not enough of a size increase to suggest the addition of any malware. 2) Even though it's closed-source, it's going to be watched under a microscope from now on. The first time Cohen & Company sneak anything into it, we'll all hear about it within a couple days. 3) If the above came to pass, the client would likely be banned from most major torrent sites. |

The fact that the code has been compromised aside, 1.6 build 474 is still the most stable release of the product. None of these new releases are as well coded and bug-free as the previous final release. That alone should be reason to avoid using them. This project really needs to go Open Source if it is to have any use. Without the original creator doing exclusive coding like back in the day, it's just not going to be the same app. Not as fast or efficient. |

It's a great client. I mean, I'm a bit of worried about the whole buy-out thing, but I mean cmon SHOW ME/US some proof, then I'll switch. |
| ModderXManiac | Apr 6, 2007 | 1.7 Build 1092 Beta | ![]() 5 out of 5 |
All the claims below are false, there is no new programmer, Ludvig Strigeus is still developing µTorrent, he is NOT on payroll from the RIAA, merely made a millionaire by the Bittorent company buying his project. µTorrent is safe as always and is DRM free, no worries. It's been awhile since the last release and the number of changes definitely makes the wait worth it. |
| BruddaMan | Apr 6, 2007 | 1.7 Build 1092 Beta | ![]() 3 out of 5 |
If utorrent were open source, at least people could check the code for themselves. But it is closed source and now in the hands of a group that lots of people have suspicions about. At least Azureus is open source. It may not be as fast or efficient, but it is a known quantity. I think I will err on the side of caution and stop using any utorrent after 474 build of 1.6. |

Lets see, 1.6 worked fine before it was purchased, this works fine after it was purchased, no unnecessary connections being made, no monitoring type activity. Sounds to me like some pirates who are afraid they might get caught. Utorrent continues to be the best, and most lightweight client available. It works well, has all the features I need without the bloat of either java or some huge unneeded codebase. Try it and ignore the FUD. |

How about we stick with reviewing the actual program for now. No need to spread bulls*** around about what you think you know... Anyone here actually see anything wrong with this program? Neither do i. |

I agree with dudeboyz. Stay away from Utorrent,Lude has fallen to the dark side long time ago.Lude is sleeping with the enemy.By the way,if you are using utorrent,in my book you are helping the SUE'EM ALL campaign from the big mafia's AA'SS.For those who are saying that it is so small and not heating up all your ressources, well buy a new PC if your not 13 years old.Their is a lot of other verygood program that you can use like HALITE for exemple. For security purpose i sugest you to go for open sources programs. If you are a linux user like me, their is enough open source programs that will suits your needs.I have seen people using utorrent with WINE on linux distro,i think they dont get it.I am a very happy UBUNTU user for 3 months and i love it. Bye bye windows. Best regards, have a nice day. :-) |

DudeBoyz, of course you have absolutely no evidence that anything of the kind is in these newer builds. It sounds like a slam dunk to you. Me, I wait for proof, which would take about 5 seconds to be splashed across news sites like Betanews should it ever come to pass. And that would be the end of UTorrent. Somehow I doubt the developers are stupid. In the meantime, it's still as good as it ever was, accounting for beta bugs. |
| DudeBoyz | Apr 6, 2007 | 1.7 Build 1092 Beta | ![]() 1 out of 5 |
The original programmer isn't even developing it any more. It's all dictated by Bit Torrent and their RIAA/MPAA buddies. Go back to Azureus, even if it is bloated junk, or stick with the last true Utorrent build. Anything after that has customer tracking all over it. |

Yes, there are people from BT helping with uTorrent. Go to their forums and see... or ask them and they will admit it. It's still a great client. It's small and it continues to get better. Is it safe? Maybe, maybe not. Stop pirating if you are too |
