I have a hd2400pro card which k-lite is basically no longer supporting & I get dx errors & no subs at all. This is working well, has a GREAT browse feature and plays the subs perf. PLUS it's a 6mb download as opposed to k-lite's 20+ |

I've tried quite a few media players and Gom Player is my favorite. Why? Because it has a keen setup wizard (great for newbies) and at the same time allows enhanced settings, because it handles all my videos and runs them smoothly, because updates remember my settings (whilst some other players don't), because it is also aesthetic (look on the website for more skins), because I've never had any problem with it :) |

GOM Player is such a failure. Months passed on and the dev team didn't fix any of the major bugs. HD playback is terrible, they kept this annoin' adware in default skin and they didn't add proper support for external splitters / codecs. KMPlayer might not be the easiest to use, or might not have that fancy look like some other players, but when it comes to video playback then it is the king in this category. GOM Players goes to my ignore list. I'm sick and tired of trying this cr@p, since the never versions are even worse than a previous ones. |

Simple, highly versatile and effective, keyboard enhanced, play anything and everything media player. My exclusive vid player for more than a year - this simply does everything - nice control panel with brightness, contrast, saturation controls, terrific screen capture, equalizer, time jump settings. Preferences are very thorough if you want or need to fiddle. Really none of the usual suspects come close. |

I agree with TGB72 regarding the toolbar, but I immediately changed the skin and replaced the orange foot on the screen and hadn't actually seen the toolbar. Aside from that issue it is a versatile player with a lot of features and could easily serve as one's only media player if it were not for the better featured KM Player. I saw no point in having both players on my system. Had I personally seen any spyware activity both the player and it's publisher would be rated 0 stars, but fortunately that wasn't the case during my test. ADDENDUM: I reinstalled Gom Player to look into the toolbar issues. There was no option to install the Google toolbar so that option was apparently removed. With regard to the default skin and Gom toolbar, I couldn't find the Gom toolbar anywhere or any way to activate it. So, I either totally missed it or it was also removed from this release. Gom Player does use the internet legitimately to download skins, logos and codecs when needed. |

Since you can decide to not install the google toolbar during the installation this does not seems to be a big threat but what I see incredible intrusive is the gom toolbar that comes with the default skin, this toolbar tries to call home no matter if you have disabled the "check for updates" option, this should be considered spyware for sure. I know that changing the skin will solve the problem but that's not the point, their move enabling that ugly toolbar in the dafault skin was very low. Regarding to features KMPlayer beats Gom baddly. |

1. It's bundled with google toolbar. 2. The update system became incredible invasive, any build after v2.1.6.3449 will try to connect to Gom's site no matter if the update options is disabled in preferences. For these to reasons I move to KMplayer. BTW, not only some users but sites like softpedia consider since a couple of builts ago this player as adware. It was a very good player in the past, really a pity. |

Works great for me, haven't had any problems. As for the nonsense adware claim, the installer does include Google Toolbar, which you CAN uncheck. Big freakin' deal. Once the player is installed it most certainly is not adware. I've had no trouble with HD content, played mkv without any issues. I am using ffdshow for everything. Just because a new version hasn't come out in a few months doesn't mean development is stopped. It works fine anyway so who cares? I still believe this is the best player I've tried to date. |

I wish people would be realistic with their reviews. media player classic can't compare to this because first off mpc is useless without installing codecs. Gom just like KM and VLC DO NOT require you to have to do that just to have video playback. All those players are nowhere near as buggy either. This is good. It has some issues with DVD playback for me but its a good second best behind KMPlayer |

FYI: KMPlayer is as good as dead. The korean developer sold the application to a well known spyware company (Pandora-TV). They will soon build an own flavour of KMplayer to support the streaming media which is the business model of this company. So Gom player is at this time the best choice. Maybe not technically but for security reasons. |

I'm quite a videophile (sounds dirty) and pretty knowledgeable about codecs, containers etc. I have EXTENSIVELY compared all the main video players. Here's what I have to say: Install some players with their own, internal decoders as well as some which require external decoders. For external decoders, the newbie should start with FFDShow. If you have issues with say WMP11, try a program like KMPlayer which has great internal decoders. If it works in KMPlayer it's NOT the video, it's your decoders or your settings. Rather than get technical, I recommend installing ALL of what I list and compare them over a long time. -KMPlayer (I install the EXE from the homepage, then Copy the latest Beta over the installation folder in Program Files.)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_KMPlayer -Zoom Player -GOM Player -Windows Media Player 11 -VLC -FFDShow (audio and video) -for DVD-Video: NVidia PureVideo, ATI equivalent, Nero Showtime or other purchased MPEG2 decoder -BluRay/HD-DVD (not aware of any free ones; Nero 8's Showtime plugin worked perfectly with my 6600GT 128MB/2GB3200/X2 4800+ system) Link: www.free-codecs.com http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codecs (start educating yourself) www.google.com (indispensible tool) Basically, video has 3 main components: 1) the Video, requiring a video decoder (WMV, DivX, AVC.. ) 2) the Audio, requiring an audio decoder (MP3, AC3, Vorbis, FLAC.. ) 3) the Container, the "glue" which joins the audio and video (AVI, MKV.. ) If the video is poor, the problem is either that the actual video quality is poor or that the video decoder isn't good enough. The same goes for audio. Audio Synch issues MIGHT be the Container, whereas not playing at all could be a missing decoder or Container. Understanding the technical details can help you troubleshoot AND enable you to watch or encode at the optimal quality. Recommended hardware: If you are in the market for a new desktop and plan to use any demanding software and/or game I highly recommend you read up on the new AMD Spider system. In particular, the new ATI HD 3870 is an incredible graphics card. If you want ONLY raw gaming performance the NVidia 8800GT is currently the best deal. The incredible power management, superior video hardware decoding and 300 stream processors and reasonable price pull this card to the front of the pack in my mind. The only thing missing for some people is video input will come in 2008 on this or another card. I mention this card, because not all software uses (or uses optimally) hardware decoders, especially new ones. If you buy a new card with hardware decoders you'll need to do some more research to find the best media player; you might use 2 or more (that's why Associating is great). Summary: GOM Player is an excellent media player; there are others and it's also worth your time to learn more. |

Great player, just not a fan of this: 4. DIGITAL RIGHTS MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS ("DRMs"). This software includes a DRM("Digital Rights Management") technology. DRMs are designed to manage and enforce intellectual property rights in digital content purchased over the Internet. Gomplayer digital rights management is a proven platform to protect and securely deliver content for playback on a computer, portable device, or network device. You may not take any action to circumvent or defeat the security or content usage rules provided or enforced by either the DRM or the Software. DRMs may be able to revoke your ability to use applicable content. Gomplayer is not responsible for the operation of third party DRM in any way, including revocation of your content. Gomplayer is not responsible for any communications to or from any third party DRM provider, or for the collection or use of information by third party DRMs. You consent to the communications enabled and/or performed by the DRM, including automatic updating of the DRM without further notice. You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Gomplayer for any claim relating to your use of a third party DRM. |

Gom is hands down the best media player and even beats players like Vlc. It should be obvious then that it easily wipes the floor with bloated garbage like RealPlayer or Windows Media Player. The download link still has an old version as Cnet hasn't updated yet. You can get the new version from Softpedia here: http://www.softpedia.com...layers/Gom-Player.shtml (use the RO mirror, the US mirror is *slow*) |

Testing between this and vlc, I prefer vlc because it has a portable edition. Problem is that vlc on my old athlon xp 2000+ with just 500mb dual channel ram, vlc locks the entire pc up. VLC plays fine, but locks up the pc almost on cue. This has very nice skins and even if I copy install it runs as a portable ap and doesn't lock the pc up. MPC is nice but requires codecs installed. |

@yokozuna: You are able to do that to customise decoder priority, however you aren't able to do the same with regard to splitters. In the current version Gom has a bad framerate when playing back MKV files due to the poor-quality internal MKV splitter, which cannot be disabled/overridden even through filter customisation. Hopefully they'll fix it up in future, but right now I can't recommend Gom at all for MKV playback due to this problem. Ideally they'd let you customise your splitters just in case, but if not then at least I'm hoping the internal MKV splitter will be improved. That said, this is otherwise a great player that in my mind is a sort of blend between the power of Zoom and the ease-of-use of MPC. It's a simple design but pretty powerful and with a lot of convenient features. I'll probably stick with Zoom for most of my playback but I'll be recommending this to my semi-power-user friends who may have outgrown MPC but would be intimidated by Zoom. I may very well use it myself too on occasion. |

matt2971, do not take it personally but I cannot understand that open source fanboys do not use Google. GOM Player [en] as downloadable from BetaNews is a trimmed version of Korean GOM Player (GOM = Gretech Online Media Player, Gretech is a company). Why I am writing about it? Because GOM Player, which is the most popular player in South Korea is able to play online TV, both play on demand or regular transmissions (GOM TV - several dozens of channels). And some of them are DRM protected. GOM TV is the most popular streaming service in South Korea, and as the most attractive feature in GOM Player, it is chiefly responsible for GOM Player's overwhelming popularity in South Korea. The GOM TV service offers users various video contents ranging from National Geographic documentaries and television dramas, to major motion pictures and adult videos (DRM protected). You do not need any TV set anymore, just a computer (the larger monitor the better) with ADSL, and you can watch TV. More how it works here: http://www.gretech.com/eng/index.html The service mixes both ad supported and pay-per-view content. Prices range from 500 won and up, with most movies available for 2,000 won. (1,000 won is very roughly about 1 US dollar.) I do hope that I will not have to explain again and again the same things! |

Great player. It replaced MPC on my computer. This is all I could find on the changes in this version. Version 2.1.2.3407 fixes the sorting feature for the playlist. |

For anyone complaining that you can't adjust gamma: Have you ever pressed F7 and clicked on video? This should give you separate sliders for brightness, contrast and saturation - very useful! And the skin is just great... The only criticism I have is that GomPlayer lacks the support for some less common codecs and writes settings into the registry. |

I really like gom player. Its much like VLC with its built in codecs that pretty much eliminate the need for bloated codec packs. It's very light on resources too. The only thing that I didn't like and its not a bug or anything is that it doesn't play nsv files. All the big fights I download are in the nsv format so this is a problem for me. KM Player however addresses this issue for me and is the ONLY reason I don't use Gom anymore. If Gom added nsv support I just might use it again. Like someone else said, this blows away MPC with FFDshow http://www.kmplayer.com/forums/index.php |

Excellent player! Works very much like MPC, with a pleasant skin. Tends to crash Vista with nVidia's crappy beta drivers, but works perfectly and with less CPU usage in XP than ffdshow+MPC. That is good in my book. |

good player. no fake. no nag screens. no hidden "get the better for money" attitude, at least I haven't found one (yet?). free player, indeed. lacks a possibility to adjust the "gamma" overlay (brightness and contrast only) - which is possible in "vlc", also a free video player. sometimes this is a vital option to get a better video output. has the ability to "sharpen", though, and different other video enhancements. has also an audio equalizer onboard for those who use high quality audio cards, though the "vlc" equalizer to my ears is somewhat and somehow a bit better . . . So - for the lack of "gamma" correction, only four stars. A real good player with loads of preferences and adjustment possibilities which you will not find in some of the costly players - for free. You gotta try it at least! |

Changelog for 3407? It's not even on the homepage yet... Anyways great player, although still needs work with subtitles (especially for softsubs) |

Well... its good for .avi files, but not for DVD movies, its nothing like WinDVD for example. But maybe in the future it will get better. |

I'm almost at a loss for words about Gom Player, but not quite. :P After installing it, flawless and easy install, by the way, I was finally able to watch "To Serve All My Days", a "Star Trek" movie from Star Trek New Voyages. It simply wouldn't play properly with my other players and now it does, in glorious full screen! So simple to use even I can use it!:P A more than well deserved FIVE. |

The only thing in my world that can compete with GOM is ZoomPlayer. GOM is seriously some of the best I have ever seen when it comes to media players. I use it for all video playback. |

I was a big fan of BsPlayer. Not anymore. I love this one now and everything i do works like a charm. Great job to creator for a free player like this! |

@CodecPack F5--->Filter--->Advanced Settings--->Add Filter ...and set filter priority... @CodecPack #2 Condition: Highest It works as I described, at least with CoreAVC (included in QT Lite). My laptop is too weak for H.264 and internal codecs, but it works flawlessly with CoreAVC. |

I would like to see a version of this player that allows usage of external DirectShow source filters and thus the ability to disable the internal source filters. @yokozuna: It indeed is possible to use external decoding filters. But I haven't succeeded to override the source filters (splitters) yet. GOM seems to use filters based on code from Gabest (guliverkli project). I prefer using Haali Media Splitter. |

I give it 3 because it has so many useful options and its very small, but it has along way to go before I switch from WinDvd, I know that WinDvd is BIG but it was made by professionals and its bugs free, GOM player has few bugs, specially with subtitles, running DVD from mounted images and picture damage when viewing moving camera vertical scene. |

Pretty sweet so far. Am using it in place of VLC currently as a trial, and am not having any playback issues thus far |

Don't forget that this player use its own internal like VLC so your system is always "clean", no need to instal codec packs that make you system unstable. |

This player without a doubt has great potential but 48 Meg RAM w/ 50% system useage (dual-core) really brings it down in my books. I also tested with WMP11 37 Meg w/ 7-8% system useage (same file). I do like the fact there are many options to play with. It does have a polished look to it. |

GOM is the best freeware player around and it is also better than many commercial ones. The better overall player is Zoom Player Pro or WMV Pro. |

It could get a little more customizable, but it IS the best one out there (KMPlayer comes close though) |

As much as I love VLC (and I do), for what I want a player for on my pc, I have yet to find a fault with Gom - and it does look good too. What more can you want than a player that does what VLC does but looks a helluva lot better. |

Top-notch media player! Has built-in codecs much like VLC with support for .3GP video files. Frame capture works better than VLC also although it lacks the streaming features. I switched from PowerDVD to GOMPlayer for watching DVDs on my laptop! |

VictorAnderson, you really made me laugh, so please, write something more! GOM Player is the most popular player in S.Korea as well as some other Asian countries and it has been known for years: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gom_player Is Google switched off in your area? |

Just tried this myself for the first time, and it feels very nice and well worked through. Nice design, nice wizards and everything. I just tried out the mp3 player part of it and it was also quite nice. I have one complaint though, the mp3 player skin isn't translated completely into english when holding your mousepointer over buttons such as the "play" button. @VictorAnderson Tell you what? I've been on this site for quite some time now and i can tell you for sure im not the author of this, since you seem to be such a great and smart detective coming to these great conclusions you should apply for a investigative job. |

if you look for a simple and efficient video player, gomplayer is for you : -no need to codecs -volume and movie position can be changed with the direction buttons on the keyboard. -it handles the most popular formats even .mov and .ram -it's totally free |

For nearly a year, I've used K-Lite Codec packs, but have been frustrated with the frequent updates, confusing installation, and difficult setup. GOM Player just works, without the need of a doctorate degree to work correctly. |

Great Player, with few interface misses, but it deserves 5 nevertheless. |
