[EDIT]
You can remove the annoying AD in the left pane.
Launch Orbit - View>>Category View,... & uncheck it.
Otherwise..........
You will need to edit the .XML files in a hidden folder "AdConfig"
@C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\Orbit\[AdConfig}
Open the XML files in notepad and remove relevant data from between
the tags and then (File>Save). Do ALL xml files you find in AdConfig &
Subfolders.
You will need to make the files "read only", BUT, not by the Rclick
option. You will have to Use CMD:cacls. And deny "everyone:w" (write).
If you don't use cacls, the files will be Re-generated.

Orbit still doesn't integrate, nor work properly, in Firefox v12. Firefox disables the add-on, stating that it is not compatible. Also the software updater is a pain in the @ss! Even though you tell Orbit to never remind you about software updates for your PC, it still annoys you about updates for your software programs.

This type of program MAY have been desirable 12 years ago but now you don't need it in your life ~ A simple & effective way to infest your PC with ad-ware & associated garbage.

Contains 'Open Candy' Ad-Ware & will attempt to hijack your homepage, why 'BetaNews' even offers this junk eludes me. ~ All user recommendations on the home page are from 2007 ~

I have been a fan of orbit but suddenly they put many uselesss add-ons
orbit has became so stupid,it even chose to download .htm file of the .zip i wanted to download, hell, can't it read that the address bar itself states "http://blahblahblah/ZIP"???
and the uninstallation process is also a retarded.
you have to go to a app data folder then delete than fcking folder even you have ran the uninstallation through the "unins000.exe"

you know? I EVEN WENT TO THE FKING ORBIT WEBPAGE JUST TO KNOW HOW TO STOP ORBIT FROM BUGGING ME(later is that app data folder which is bugging)

i read the uninstallation guide and YOU KNOW WHAT???
THE GUIDE ONLY SEEMS APPLIES TO WINDOWS XP AND IT DOESN'T EVEN STATE THAT IT'S FOR XP,THE GUIDE CALLS ITSELF A "GUIDE".NOTHING ELSE.IM USING 7 AND I CAN'T GET RID OF ORBIT UNTIL I FOUND THE ****ING FOLDER BY CHECKING EACH OF EVERY FOLDER.

ORBIT IS TOO PRIMITIVE,ORBIT HAS TO KNOW THAT 7 AND VISTA HAS BEEN RELEASED...YEARS AGO(everyone knows it,damn orbit)AND FILE DIRECTORIES FOR XP,VISTA,7 ARE ALL DIFFERENT

I WAS GONNA CHOOSE -1000 RATING BUT TOO BAD I COULD'NT

After version 3.0.0.5, this program is terrible. It crashes constantly in Windows 7, during downloading files. I walk away from the PC, and come back to find out the files never downloaded because the program had crashed! I have tried this an a few Win 7 & Vista machines, and the problem happens on each one. Every time they come out with a new version, I get excited that they finally fixed the crashing, but it's the same. This used to be one of the best, but I'm still using v3.0.0.5 for now. You can still get the older v3.0.0.5, at: http://www.oldapps.com/o...old_orbit_downloader=41

Orbit Downloader died after version 3.0.0.5 and has become complete Ad-ware. Use Free Download Manager instead.

This used to be one of the best download managers there was, until version 4 when they secretly started adding unrelated annoying ad-ware programs and the author totally lost his soul. GrabIt, GetIt Recorder, Bing Toolbar and the Webpage Redirector I can deal with, but the "Software Updater" is ad-ware of the worst kind. It pops up messages up to every hour on the hour telling you that "Updates for software you have installed are available" even when it's Turned Off. The worst part is that the updates they're referring to are for "Paid Versions" and "Beta Versions" of Free Products.

The author probably made a lot of money adding that crap, but he destroyed the program in the process. Complete Sell Out.

A long time ago, I was a big fan of Orbit, but over time, Orbit kept adding horrible features and refusing to fix long-standing bugs. The "Software Updates" feature was the last straw. It CANNOT be disabled but it consumes huge amounts of CPU on a computer with many applications installed. Don't inventory my entire computer and search the Internet for updates every time I just want to download a single little file!! Stay away from this bloated pile of junk!

This is the best Downloader I have used, but that new 'Software Updater' is a load of rubbish. Runs when it wants to, uses 100% of CPU, and when you want to update something - it dumps you on somebody's home page. Fortunately you can turn it off!.

I was a fan of Orbit Downloader prior to version 3, but ever since then they have been aggressively advertising products that have nothing to do with their own (Bing Tool-bar, Grab Pro, Software Updater), not to mention (Offering to Change your Home Page to Orbit and Orbit Suggestions on Browser Navigation Error) . Their new Software Updater is Worthless, it detects beta versions of products that are still been tested and Pro versions of functioning Freeware. Their extremely aggressive marketing is starting to kill their product. Maybe if Free Download Manager wasn't so ugly I would switch.

Refer here: http://progsense.recipester.org .

Here's a more descriptive changelog:

Add Soft Updater called ProgSense. It can
· 1) New version check and notification
· Progsense scan your installations and notify you while new versions are released. It helps you manage your vast installations centralized, keep your software up-to- date easily, conveniently and immediately. Make your pc run at full performance, functions and free from software flaws.

· 2) social software updater
· ProgSense is a social software updater. It means you use it in a social community, recipester.org. With it you can meet people with similar interests, share information, opinions, and knowledge with users like you about the software you like the most, ask questions and get answers from experienced users and our real experts, learn & co-create software related knowledge, discover great software you need indeed.

I'm not a fan of this changelog and it appears the product is just headed downhill.

There are some sites that Orbit handles better than GetRight but I still stick with GetRight the majority of the time.

Pre-v3 versions were great, but every new one (3.0.0 to 3.0.2) still have LOTS of bugs!

* The queue is completely messed up, files are downloaded in random order (at least I don't see any logic behind it).
* The progress display mostly lags (does the whole download?).
* When deleting entries from the list the "delete file as well" checkbox ist ALWAYS checked (at least it doesn't do anything to the files, no matter what state the checkbox is)
* The scheduler is still awful (why set the date in the general preferences, not for each file? why does it remain in the past after downloading?)
* Changing order in the queue (if it would work) is a pain, I second the "add buttons"-wish!
* ...and many more...

To bad a once absolutely great downloader got so badly messed up, seems like completely rewritten from scratch :-(

EDIT: just checked out FDM mentioned below, works great, but I REALLY miss Orbit's feature to enter a custom local filename (i.e. how many downloads still are called "setup.exe"??). So for the momemt: back to Orbit 2.8.20 (still available via http://www.filehippo.com/download_orbit_downloader/)

Tags! I love tag! But this release is still buggy. :(
crash if I download file without tagging it while downloading a tagged file and seems like the download speed doesn't change on realtime now

Some things I'd like to be added:
- "Up" and "Down" button for queue
- Automatic pre-specified directory for specific tag
- More advanced scheduler

3 stars until they fixed the bug, back to older version for now...

Good program for downloading (with pause/resume capabilities). You can specify bandwidth allocation to alleviate slowness (during browsing while downloading). There is a feature in this program that redirects dns IF the option is enabled (on by default), easy to turn off.

NOTES:

- During "custom" install, uncheck "run at startup", "grabber for IE" and uncheck "xobni".

- Open program, preferences>general tab, verify "start on startup" is disabled

- Go to preferences>accelerate, uncheck "obrbitnet"

- Go to preferences>monitoring>"let orbit suggestions on browser navigation options" and uncheck

- For some sites that disallow multiple connections for free downloads (rapidshare/megaupload.etc), under preferences>"connections", set connections to original url/max connections per job to "1".

optional: you can also remove the "one click" youtube downloader add-on for firefox: firefox>addons>uninstall oneclick youtube downloader

Needs a little manual tweaking after install but otherwise works well.
You will only get the "downland with orbitdownload" context menu if orbitnet is running.

other alternative is Free Download Manager:

Orbit Downloader is the only software with the use of Grab++ to save protected .asf streams where other software apps like WMRecorder fail to connect. Period.
Allthough I do not trust this software fully I cannot complain how it works so far..

Where the complains come from has to do with : Grab Pro GlobalNet Limited. Disable this in Internet Explorer and everything works fine again. So go to Extra / Insert applications manager...and disable Grab Pro GlobalNet Limited

Tried the software, downloaded youtube video as an FLV - no way to change it to an actual usable format through this program - not a big deal.

Big deal however...

This thing threw in it's own DNS server - which is terrible btw - I don't care if there is a fix, it didn't alert me at all, didn't ask, didn't notify - before I know it I go to my bank with one page, fine, I try to go to my credit card company - www.creditone.com and I get "404" error - check on another PC - no 404 - remove obrit completely, go to the same site, redirects me to the PROPER WEBSITE.

I do not care if there is a fix. I had to change my banking password because I do not want them accessing the information

DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS SOFTWARE IT CHANGES YOUR DNS

4 stars for the program. Does what it needs to do. Wish there was a way to clear all the history at once or disable it entirely.

Minus 3 star for installing the Orbit search engine into Firefox & IE7 without asking or informing and setting it as the default engine. Don't other apps get labeled as spyware for such behavior?

Orbit is a better-than-average download manager, but the installer has become increasingly more annoying. Every time you update Orbit, it will set itself to autostart with Windows. Sure, it only takes 2 clicks to turn it off, but it will turn itself back on (without asking) on the next update. With this version, it gets worse for IE7 users: Orbit's web search (powered by Google) is automatically added to your list of search providers, which is fine except that it is also set as your default (again, without asking).

I can understand that Orbit's developers need the Google revenue to support this free program, but they should ask during Setup. I don't even mind if the default answer is Yes; I just want the courtesy of being asked.

I'm also still waiting patiently for the ridiculous bug to be fixed with UNC (network) paths. You can browse to them, but it won't let you add a download with a UNC path, regardless of whether you browse to it or type it in. You can even move a completed download to a UNC path just fine. The validation logic on the Create New Download dialog is simply sloppy programming and could be fixed very quickly and easily, but the developer continues to ignore all the complaints on his forum.

@ the above poster: it isn't anything to do with IE, its the toolbar that Orbit intergrates into IE causing the problem.

2.7.8 is a bad version, all previous versions i liked, a lot.
You cant uninstall the Toolbar it installs with 2.7.8, and it causes Internet Explorer to crash which basicly means you either uninstall Orbit or don't use Internet Explorer, i decided to uninstall this version as it is useless until these major bugs are fixed. God knows how it managed to get released with this major bugs.

After trying out quite a few other downloaders, I've finally settled with orbit. It's the best I've come across till now.
I'm just looking forward to the developers making few minor modifications to the software like putting a multiple selection option in the Grab++ window just like the one you have in the "Choose the URL you want to download" window. I'm talking about the "switch choosing state" check box u see when u r importing a list of download.
I can't help wishing this software had a webcrawler also. Please look into that also.

Overall, my favorite downloader but many little annoying bugs are long ignored by the developer. For example, you cannot specify a UNC path to save a file, despite being able to browse to it. You can use a mapped drive, and you can move the file to a UNC path from within Orbit after downloading, but the stupid Add dialog just won't accept a UNC path. Reported and confirmed multiple times in the forums but never fixed, just one of many UI limitations like the missing up/down toolbar buttons which wouldn't be so bad if you could use the up/down options on the right-click context menu when selecting multiple files. Alas, those options are only available when 1 file is selected. Supports grouping download history by category but forget about specifying the category when you add the download (the ideal time); you have to wait until the download finishes (which might be hours or days later; after all, that's why you're using a download manager to begin with) so I hope you remembered to enter a comment to remind yourself what category "setup.exe" belongs in! Of course, you'd override a filename like setup.exe, right? Better do it before you add it to the queue because you can't change it while queued (even if paused); again, gotta wait until after download. Orbit supports a pipe-delimited text file import format which optionally allows specifying the http referer, cookies, and comment. Unfortunately, the corresponding export only gives you the URL.

Data layout is still very poor, hard to tell anything useful about your download other than the amount completed and current speed. And recently the Grab++ has gotten buggy, it won't sniff anything unless I start it before I start my browser. Both very annoying issues, but good aside from that. If VisualWget gets a sniffer, I may stop using this all together.

im still really annoyed that you cant paste multiple urls to it.. but.. ah well..

between this and flashget and the non-free net transport.. net transport is an absolute crystal clear winner!!.. ... but between flashget and orbit as the FREE ones.. hard choice.. they both have some great features..

Very Good....
..But it does Not work on Rapidshare (Free)...
Whereas Free Download Manager works for Rapidhare (Free)....
But Orbit gives far more useful info for completed downloads....
So have to use both....

Excellent program. I replace Free Download Manager with this and continue to be impressed. Don't get me wrong, FDM is pretty kickbutt as well but it can't beat grabbing flash, etc. files.

Getright is repugnant at this point. How dare you charge for a girl saying "File's done!"?...because that's about the only thing that piece of software has over FDM and Orbit....and I use the word 'over' very cautiously.

It's all right.

Although the speed is faster than Opera's manager, It's not as fast as Free Download Manager's speed. I only downloaded this for testing purposes.

Features are fine.

I disagree with adrian_stoermer below. Even if one has broadband, there is the fact that some sites limit download speed and that's when a download manager is very handy. In such cases, download speed can be greatly increased.

As mentioned by someone below, most of the time there's no need for a download manager, but in the rare cases when I do need one, this has everything I need, and the price is right.

GetRight? Cause it's $20 a year cheaper than GetRight, and provides 99% of the features, and that extra 1% are useless to 99.9% of people.

GREAT program.
To adrian_stoermer:
Not everyone has broadband, and here (Australia) even the ones that do, usually get "shaped" to 64k when they reach their broadband download quota, and sometimes (especially with our largest ISP, Telstra) that 64k makes it almost IMPOSSIBLE to download any file over a MB or so, because of constant timeouts.

I don't find use for it myself, but I have used it before when I used to get shaped, and it worked excellent. I also provide it to clients on dial-up.

In these modern times of broadband, there really is relatively little use for download managers any more. We don't need to schedule downloads for the night anymore, so that they will be cheaper, because we're always on.
I've gone thru a number of download managers in my internet years, starting with such garbage as Go!Zilla and DAP and working my way up to a bunch more until I settled for FlashGet. When broadband came around (I wasn't exactly an early adopter), I quit using download managers, or only occasionally went for the DownThemAll extension for Firefox.
I think the people behind Orbit realized this change and came up with a bunch of truely unique features that makes this download manager one of the best ones out there. One of these features is the ability to download from a number of One-Click-Hosts such as Rapidshare (works for me). Another great feature is the ability to download content from tons of community-driven sites, such as MySpace or YouTube. Yes, there are programs that can already do it, and yes, there are countless extensions for Firefox which do the same. But as far as I know, none of these features were ever unified in a download manager before.
What really makes Orbit stand out from the crowd is its 'Grab++' component. It's a little program you can launch separately that monitors all traffic and allows you to download content from yet unsupported websites. Ever encountered the annoying Anti-Leech plugin? Well, with Orbit's Grab++ the URL becomes visible and you can download the files much faster.
In terms of the interface, Orbit really offers nothing new. It looks the same as NetAnts and FlashGet and uses a Win98-esque defrag window to show the progress of individual parts.
What this download manager is missing is a good web-based tool for finding alternative download sources (a la GetRight's findfiles.com) and what I would really wish for is an option to retreive files via CoralCDN or CoBlitz automatically.
What I'm sceptic of is Orbit's 'OrbitNet' P2P download service. Aparently it increases your download speed by anonymously downloading from other sources. Orbitnet.exe opens countless UDP connections and even with OrbitNet disabled, a few strange UDP connections show up in my cFosSpeed.
This software, like FlashGet, is Made in China. Therefore, I can't rule out that this software monitors and reports your internet activity. If it wasn't for that - 5/5

Best download manager I've ever used, and continues to get better. Unfortunately they haven't changed the two things I dislike most.

1. The progress view with the thousands, or even millions of little boxes, needs to be replaced with something thats actually viewable. It's kind of like the defrag utility display in 98, they should make it like the defrag display in XP.

2. Adding mirrors could be easier.

Before I will use it over GetRight, there needs to be another check box in the Download config screen - Remember last download location. I have said this before and will say it again (same goes for FDM!) - I WANT TO PLACE MY DOWNLOADED FILES WHERE I WANT THEM!!! Not some artifical intellegence putting them where it thinks I want them. The Remember last download location is for when downloading many files to the same location.

This is a very good release. Orbit is on the cusp of becoming as good or better than FDM. I think Orbit is 1 or 2 releases away from being "the best"!

The silent mode was a great addition, but is too silent. It badly needs an optional sound to tell you the D/L started successfully. Otherwise, you have no confidence that the D/L started unless you locate the icon in the tray, and hover the mouse cursor over it.

Orbit could also use an optional, small popup graph that shows D/L speed and progress. 4.4/5!

Better, but BADLY NEEDS 1-Click download. This would make Orbit a better program than FDM and FlashGet!

Of course 1-Click D/L would need WAV sounds to notify you when the file D/L started successfully and completed successfully. If you don't like sounds, you can turn them off in the options, just as you can now.

Ever since flashget turned into a piece of crap(last couple of versions keep crashing like no tomorrow) I've switched to orbit for good. Does exactly what i want to do & good Firefox integration. This is probably the best free download manager I have tried. I have to disagree with the review below also, I don't really see start and stop sounds being that important. Personally I hate them, I don't need a program to beep at me to know it's working. Sure it would be ok as an option but I don't think that brings it's rating down.

Nice, but not usable in its current form.

Orbit badly needs an automatic mode where it downloads with no user input. Just click on the link and walk away. If you have to verify the download, and click repeatedly, you may as well use the default Windows download.

It also badly needs a sound that verifies the download has started successfully, and a sound to notify you of an error.

FDM and Flashget are the premiere DL managers because they have the aforementioned features.

I like this program but I have one problem. When I play mmo's it freezes them, at first I thought it was my NVfirewall, so I disabled it but it still happened. I turned off Orbit and they work fine. I've tried it with several mmo's from RFonline to Space Cowboy and Rapples.

Other than that I've tried this and FDM and they're both very good programs. This one does one thing I don't think FDM does and thats if you want to download media from a website it'll let you do it just by right clicking on one file and you can then get download all through Orbit. I love that feature.

I prefer Freedownloadmanager. It has an easy to use bandwidth throttle, selectable by buttons. It also searches www.filemirror.com for alternative sources (this can be set automatically) It can also integrate with IE and Firefox to be the default DLoad manager and of course it is also free.

Sorry...no cigar for you.

Good, but not the best one;

Personally I need a feature that does not exist in Orbit. I need to transfer the download list from a machine that has a slow Internet connection to another with a faster Internet connection each day. This can only be achieved by a proper Export/Import feature and Orbit lacks it (this is why I'm still using the buggy FlashGet).
The problem with Orbit is; it does not let me export the download list properly, only downloaded items list can be exported, and this list does only contain the links, there are no details.

It's not possible to rename a download item (incomplete) in the list. (the "Rename File" option in the Edit menu is grayed out and there is no rename option in the "Edit Property" dialog)

In summary, it's a good application, but there are many miles to go...

In my opinion, Leechget is 100x better. I had probs connecting with servers and I dislike the memory usage (and the tray icon). Resume is the only reason I use a download mgr as FF does not have this capability implemented properly yet. P2P technology? (who? me and a server-we are peers-NOT) I'll be honest. Whenever I have a choice between a torrent and either ftp or http, I'll take the ftp/http every time. Much faster

Nice download accelerator, but I've got to tell you, that popup dialog will drive you nuts. There should be a way to turn it off and always download to your default download folder. FlashGet and FDM have this feature, and they are currently the cream of the crop.

Very good download program. Most other download manager's are extremely bloated, and cost money (WTF, for free I'll just stick with the browser). They're especially not worth paying for in my case, the only time I use a program like this is for downloading large files, like BSD/Linux ISO's. This one is very small, clean, and easy to use.

The only gripe I have with this app is that the Firefox add-on for integration totally trashes the context menu in Minefield (Firefox 3.0a2). Although for all I know it works fine in Ff1 and 2, but I think I heard somewhere than Ff3 is coming out later this year, so hopefully they'll fix the problem really soon. However, using the DownloadWith add-on provides suitable integration for my purposes.

I really like this program. I love the way it works with Maxthon. I wouldn't change anything major about it. A couple of minor changes would make it much more useful, and as good as FDM and FlashGet:

*Needs an option to turn off the confirmation button to download a file. It's annoying, and unnecessary.

*Need 1 more sound to go along with the "complete" and "error". That would be a sound for "Download Started". That way, you don't have to wonder if the file has started downloading in the "no confirmaiton" mode.

1 more Wish: Make it portable. It could read an INI file for the settings. It could copy itself to the HDD and register itself by clicking a "register" button.

What is it with these DL managers that REFUSE to let me pick a download location for EVERY file I want to download? I drop files all over the place, depending on what it is. A single download location means the DL program is sent to the bitbucket!

Developer, I hope you are listening - just add a feature like GetRight to let me pick the folder I want to download to at download time!

It's a very nice alternative for FlashGet already, regarding performance and resource usage. Especially the comfortable hover icon for Youtube and its metalink integration are very attractive components.

Imho it's too fresh to already rate it a 5, but it's on a very good way if development continues that strong.

Softpedia has proven to be a trustworthy site for a very long time and after inspecting the archive, no evidence of whatever-ware can be found. The problem with apps like "Spy Sweeper" is that the users generally are not able to differ between real and false alarms, just like when using AV apps. It's a real mess with all those hoaxes...
